Dr. Ewan Denny - The Importance of the Bible Some things we do might be spiritual but not biblical. Everything we do has a biblical foundation.
Do you ever wonder why God picks some of the people he picks to hold up as examples in the Bible- Some of the models we're told to emulate are people who have an awful lot of failure. We read about their lives, and you read ten terrible things they did for every one good thing they finally do. -There are other people in the Bible with no recorded failures. So why does God seem to pick such sketchy people for us to look to as examples to imitate-
Jesus Versus Scripture?Read John 5:45–47. What powerful message does Jesus give us hereabout His relationship to the Bible?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________Some people claim that when Jesus spoke He put His words instark contrast to the words of Scripture, as we find them in the OldTestament. They say that the words of Jesus are even elevated abovethe words of Scripture. In the New Testament, we read that Jesus said: “ ‘You have heard thatit was said . . . but I say to you . . .’ ” (Matt. 5:43, 44; compare withMatt. 5:21, 22, 27, 28, 33, 34, 38, 39). When Jesus said these famouswords in the Sermon on the Mount, He was not trying to abandon orabolish the Old Testament, as some interpreters claim. Instead, Heresponded to various interpretations of Scripture and to oral traditionsthat were used by some interpreters of His day to justify behaviortoward other people that God did not condone and never commanded, like hating your enemy (see Matt. 5:43).Jesus did not abolish the Old Testament in any way or in any degreelessen its authority. The opposite is true. It was the Old Testament that, indeed, proves who He is. Instead, He intensified the meaning of theOld Testament statements by pointing us to God’s original intentions. To use Jesus’ authority to disqualify Holy Scripture or to denigratesome parts of the Bible as uninspired is perhaps one of the subtlest, and yet most dangerous, criticisms of Scripture, because it is done inthe very name of Jesus. We have Jesus’ example of how much authorityHe gave to the Scriptures, which, in His day, consisted of the OldTestament only. What more evidence do we need about how we shouldview the Old Testament, as well?Far from weakening the authority of Scripture, Jesus consistently upheldScripture as a reliable and trustworthy guide. In fact, He unambiguouslystates in the very same Sermon on the Mount: “ ‘Do not think that I cameto abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill’ ”(Matt. 5:17, NASB). And He continues to say that whoever “ ‘annuls one ofthe least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shallbe called least in the kingdom of heaven’ ” (Matt. 5:19, NASB).What are some of the key doctrines that, to this day, find theirgrounding in the Old Testament? Think, for example, of Creation(Genesis 1, Genesis 2) and the Fall (Genesis 3). What other crucialChristian truths do we find in the Old Testament that are lateramplified in the New Testament?

Sometimes we get lulled into thinking God is only in control in certain situations, but not in others. This is a lie direct from the enemy's playbook. Tauren Wells' new song "Hills and Valleys" reminds us that God is the supreme authority over all terrain in our lives. There was a group of Arameans in 1 Kings 20 that learned this same lesson the hard way. I know that God is the God of the hills and the valleys and I long to trust him in both. Song of Solomon is one of the most controversial books in the Bible with a wide variety of different interpretations. Is this story an allegory that poetically describes God's love for his people or is this primarily a story of the passion between two lovers? "The literal interpretation of the Song of Solomon has been rejected many times by both Jewish and Christian interpreters. The reason given for not considering the book a love song is the feeling that a sacred book should not be about the passion and joys of love between a man and a women...because of its explicit language, ancient and modern Jewish sages forbade men to read the book before they were thirty (and presumably kept women from reading it at all)." - Nelson Study Bible Commentary Is "falling in love" and human sexuality a subject that is "beneath" the Bible? Some have had a very high opinion of this book, "The whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel for all the Scriptures are holy, but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies." - Rabbi Akiba Get the powerpoint slides here - http://www.godscharacter.com/files/ppt/Song_Solomon.ppt
