Dan's first of two stories today is not sexy, despite being about a succubus. It's strange and upsetting. His second story was once featured on the original Unsolved Mysteries. It's the tale of a young woman, Grace Brown, putting her trust in the wrong man over a century ago. And it seems, in death, she still hasn't been able to move past how her life so tragically and abruptly ended. Then, Lynze takes us to Australia! It's real, we promise. What kind of horrors and creatures are hiding in the bush? Then we finish with an unsettling entity+dream warning combo. Pregnant Church Worker Found Dead In Harvey's LakeAd Free Safe House Late EditionIf the tropes in Episode 275 sound a bit like Episode 96, “The Body In Big Moose Lake,” the familiarity was not lost on the people of the day, either. The 1906 murder of Grace Brown in Big Moose Lake inspired novelist Theodore Dreiser to write “An American Tragedy,” which became an instant classic when it was published in 1925. The story you are about to hear struck such a familiar chord that the press made many comparisons and headlines described the murder of Freda McKechnie and the trial of Bobby Edwards in the same terms. 'Billy' Brown's Tragic Affair Episode 96 is a tragic story of young love gone bad. Real bad. So bad, in fact, that it ended with the body of a young girl floating in an up-state New York lake one summer day in 1906. The man she came there went missing, but not for long. Was it a simple accident as Chester Gillette would claim, or a brutal, cold-blooded murder on a honeymoon trip? The answer may be in the tear-stained letters she wrote to him.Theme music by Dave Sams. Happy Spooky Wednesday! We've got a very special guest this week: Left of Skeptic Super Fan Gina! We start the episode with the third annual Kala's seeeester birthday request: haunted campsites. Kala talks about Lake Morena in San Diego, Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks, Crystal Lake Campground in Los Angeles County, and Cameron Park in Waco. Each recreation area is haunted in different ways, but they all have tragic occurrences in their history that may be the cause of the hauntings. Pick your poison. Do you want the creepy, levitating figure of a man whose disembodied footsteps have been heard all around the property? Or do you want to experience phantom hands tugging at your clothes and hair? Or do you want to witness the misty figure of a devastated woman who was betrayed by an ex-lover? Your choice could determine the direction of your next road trip! And Brittany tells us all about Kasha House of Kaimuki, our first ever Hawaii location! Considered one of the most well known urban legends on the island, the house looks relatively normal, but looks can be deceiving. A Kasha, a man-eating ghost from Japanese folklore, is said to reside inside the home. Other theories behind the haunting include a ghoul who feeds on the dead, and a cat-like demon. All three versions have one thing in common: insatiable hunger for blood and corpses. So, that's pleasant. With such dark subject matter, do you think we've scared Gina away for good? Of course not! She's giving skeptic scale ratings right along with us! Thank you so much for joining us, Gina! Make sure to check out her recommendation for another great podcast to check out: The Night Owl Podcast out of Austin, TX! And Happy Birthday Seeeeeeeeeeester Sara! Have the best time camping! Let us know if you see any ghosts! And thanks to all of you listeners! We love and appreciate you very much! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leftofskeptic/support

This week, Amber is joined by guest co-host, Allison Buist! Allison covers the murder of Grace Brown. On July 11, 1906, 19-year old Grace Brown and Chester Gillette were out rowing on Big Moose Lake in upstate New York. Grace was pregnant and she knew that she would be forever shamed if she were to be an unwed mother. This had caused tension between the pair. Chester thought of himself as a ladies man who could not be tied down. But when Grace's body is found in Big Moose Lake, Chester can't seem to keep his story straight. Amber and Allison shared a bottle of Atico Tempranillo Monastrel 2019. The Fyre Festival was advertised as a luxury music festival founded by Billy McFarland. It was created with the intent to promote a music talent booking app for his company Fyre Media, that McFarland had just launched. However, after burning through investment money, taking out short-term loans, losing the lease on the intended location and several other poor choices made along the way, what was supposed to be a luxury festival turned into a complete disaster. When Grace Brown found out she was pregnant with boyfriend Chester Gillette, she begged him to marry her. This was in 1906, when becoming pregnant out of wedlock would drive some women to suicide instead of facing the shame. After multiple refusals to marry Grace, Chester took her on a weekend getaway to Big Moose Lake. Only Chester would return. Did Chester murder her to rid himself of having to marry Grace and raise their child, or did Grace, unable to deal with the rejection and shame, take her own life instead?
Grace Brown, a simple farm girl, and Chester Gillette. Their relationship comes to an end on Big Moose Lake.
