Dan's first of two stories today is not sexy, despite being about a succubus. It's strange and upsetting.  His second story was once featured on  the original Unsolved Mysteries. It's the tale of a young woman, Grace Brown, putting her trust in the wrong man over a century ago.  And it seems, in death, she still hasn't been able to move past how her life so tragically and abruptly ended. Then, Lynze takes us to Australia! It's real, we promise. What kind of horrors and creatures are hiding in the bush? Then we finish with an unsettling entity+dream warning combo. Thank you for continuing to send in your stories, Creeps and Peepers! Please keep doing so!!Send them to mystory@scaredtodeathpodcast.comSend everything else to info@scaredtodeathpodcast.comWant to be a Patron? Jodie and Andrea are using the off-season break to share the movies that made them the kind of people who were destined to be obsessed with a show like Yellowjackets. This week, Andrea tasked Jodie and our listeners with watching the 1996 horror movie, Scream. Directed by horror icon Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, Scream is a movie we're sure most of you have already seen, but it's also one that is part of Andrea's DNA. We talk about what the movie did for the horror genre, what it says about the high school experience, the inherent (confirmed) queerness of two of the characters in the movie, Rose McGowan's tiny eyebrows and Matthew Lillard's giant shirts.Referenced in the episode:The cast of Yellowjackets at Paleyfest"‘Scream' Screenwriter Kevin Williamson Confirms Billy and Stu's Queer-Coded Relationship Was Based on Real Gay Killers"“How ‘Scream' Explored the Exploitative Nature of the Nightly News”Recommended in this episode:Josh Ruben, in general. The Mother Shelley of all questions: who is the monster - the creature or the man who made them? Or, in this episode, who is the barbarian and who is the muse??  Looking back at two top films from the past year, the Cadaver Dogs examine how the post #metoo era is presented in horror… through a male perspective. Travis Stevens' artistic film A WOUNDED FAWN (starring Josh Ruben of Werewolves Within and Scare Me) sends us to a time when the Furies were feared by all and muses used their sexuality to inspire artists. We analyze the presence of ancient myths today, focusing in on the #MeToo movement with men's abuse of female artists, how the women reclaimed their power, and how the men are adjusting. Then, join us down in the tunnels for BARBARIAN (starring scream kings Bill Skarsgaard and Justin Long). Down here, we have cancel culture, Frankenstein's monster, male fragility, and false redemption. All-in-all, what we really ask is: do male filmmakers have a right to tell these stories now? And, what do they mean? At Cadaver Dogs, we ask the hard questions and have the hard conversations, but it's all fun down here - we have cookies! And t-shirts! 07:06 - A Wounded Fawn 24:43: - Barbarian 48:48 - Comparisons 1:19:42 - Bone Reviews . Up Next: GODZILLA (1954) / THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957) . Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. For this––our last episode of 2022––we bring on the extremely talented filmmaker Josh Ruben to discuss the legendary Sam Raimi. We primarily focus on some of Raimi's earlier B-Sides: namely Crimewave (currently streaming on Tubi), The Quick and the Dead, and For Love of the Game. Ruben himself stars in the new film A Wounded Fawn, now streaming on Shudder. This is a brutal, gnarly, allegorical piece of horror that earns a solid recommendation from The B-Side. Seek it out and enjoy! Ruben has also directed two top-notch features: Scare Me and Werewolves Within. We discuss plenty with Ruben, from his own College Humor beginnings (this video in particular, I still cry every time I watch) to Raimi's own The Evil Dead beginnings. From the troubled production of Crimewave to the initial negative reaction to The Quick and the Dead. There's some discussion on Raimi's masterful A Simple Plan, his underseen Southern Gothic The Gift, and Ruben's experiences in the industry and future endeavors. For more from The B-Side, you can check out highlights of actors/directors and the films discussed in one place here. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook. Comedy as a genre relies very heavily on timing to deliver jokes at a full impact. Horror also relies very heavily on timing as well to deliver jump scares or truly unsettling scenes. So it makes sense a lot of great comedy writers and actors can make the leap from one genre to the other or straddle the line. That is exactly what College Humor heavy hitter Josh Ruben has done. He has moved over from being Precious Plum's Mama to being the king of Shudder. On today's show, Josh Ruben chats with Dan about just that. Horror and Comedy are two huge tentpoles of this conversation. They talk about Josh's super power of timing in his acting and directing films like Scare Me and Werewolves Within. Josh Ruben talks about a few horror scenes that have stuck with him since they first buried themselves into his mind. The range of the scenes is very interesting that leads to a brief side bar about Joe Dante and spitting puppets. The two get the chance to talk about some of the techniques and shots from Scare Me. The use of lightning is a hot topic in the interview. Josh also talks about how he is his hardest critic. It's an interesting look at how someone who is directing themselves views their performance. They also got to chat about his most recent performance in A Wounded Fawn. Josh talks about how his background in comedy helped him push himself into a much harder performance as the audience will see in the film now available on Shudder. The film is a deeply unsettling but incredible next step for Josh as an actor. Josh also talks about his upcoming graphic novel DARLA coming next year with Invader Comics. The premise sounds incredible so keep your eyes open for that one coming early 2023!

We could not let Halloween season pass us by without chatting about a scary movie and wouldn't you know it: we picked a divisive film amongst the 1001 by 1 team. This week we are discussing the surprise hit and (temporary?) cultural phenomenon: “The Blair Witch Project”. Adam and Ian are joined this week by lifelong horror fan Chas Messmer to discuss the themes of the film, the legacy (both good and bad), and first viewings of the film. The conversation also broadens into the top 10 most profitable indie films of all time and the idea of “toxic fandom”. Also, this week Chas recommends “Scare Me” (available on Shudder), Ian recommends “Willow Creek” (available on Prime or Kanopy), and Adam recommends “Under the Skin” (available on Kanopy).

SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENINGThis week both of Dan's tales are demon related. At least according to those involved. The first story comes from the Warren files. A lesser known tale of demonic infestation from Ed and Lorraine's seminal book “The Demonologist”. We head to Vermont in 1974 to hear the disturbing tale of the Donovan family haunting. One woman's Ouija board use seems to have led to contact with something that was NOT what it said it was - something that would terrorize the entire Donovan family for months. His next tale is known as the Exorcism of Gina. In 1991, ABC News' iconic exposé news program 20/20 would air coverage of the exorcism of a teenage girl identified only as “Gina.” She'd be cured -  BUT - did broadcasting what was supposedly her demonic possession lead to the demonic possessions of others? Lynze has a possible hat man sighting. A young mother notices the familiar feeling of her home feeling "off". The feeling escalates to an interaction with something. What does it want- her or her baby? Wrapping up the stories for this week is a tale about a family curse and possibly a warning about the family curse from a long dead family member. It all builds to a super spoopy ending!  New Merch: Black cats can be bad omens - but what about 3 eyed black cats?  What if there was a shirt with a black cat on it? What if you're the one wearing the shirt? Are you now a bad omen? If any of you get this shirt, let us know if wearing it makes anything weird happen.Head on over to badmagicmerch.com and check it out!Standup: Also - if you want to see a very different side of Dan than you see here, his Symphony of Insanity standup tour is back and running.
