In this episode of Brown Girl Green, we are joined with Brittney Enin, Founder and Executive Self-Care Consultant & Radiator of Black Sunshine as we talk about the importance of “self-care.” It is expected that the climate crisis has and will continue to have a detrimental impact on public health, particularly on society’s mental health. As the news likes to convince us that the world is falling apart (and in some ways it is), how are we going to take care of ourselves and each other? Self-care is a form of deep activism, as we are radically defining what it means to adapt and care for ourselves and others in challenging environmental conditions. We cover: Why self-care is a necessity, not just a luxury (and it doesn’t have to be expensive, i.e. setting boundaries is FREE!) Methods to embracing a self-care journey and to unlearn that your self-care doesn’t matter How to practice reciprocity: learning how to give and take when you are naming your needs Why people of color, in particular, should not feel guilty for reclaiming self-care as an act of survival Highlights: “You need to start naming and legitimizing the forces that make you feel so tired” “The world needs to see women of color in their full range of emotions” “Depending on your place on society you internalize certain things as normal../ things that I used to think were ways of communicating [about these things] were actually really oppressive” “We can hold our oppression and our privilege at the same time, it’s when people don’t do that, that we are in trouble” You can connect with Brittney at selfcareconsult.com, @slfcareconsult Or follow her as @nerdqween on Instagram This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

In Episode 63, I speak with Black Sunshine about his 1994 thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. This is the second release in a flashback series where we speak with 11 prospective thru-hikers about their attempt to complete the A.T. in a single year. It was recorded in Charlotte, N.C. on March 5th, 1995, and is part of a series to honor the 25th anniversary of our '94 thru-hike on the A.T. In the episode, Black Sunshine tells us about his winter start in Georgia, the Virginia blues, and his eventual jump North to escape the brutal Southern heat and humidity. He also shares some personal tips for enjoying a long distance hike on the A.T. For a change of format, you will not hear me in this podcast. Black Sunshine speaks solo and candidly on the highs and lows of the journey - with some sound effects bridging the gaps. You can click to Episode 41 for a compilation of this series, or check out the Trail Days 2019 podcast to learn more about the annual event. In Episode 41, we revisit Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia on March 13, 1995. The town has hosted the biggest event on the Appalachian Trail for over 30 years and most of these interviews were recorded live at the annual festival. If you have ever wondered what it was like to thru-hike the A.T. in the early 90's - now is your chance. The podcast is a remix of interviews that I did with ten hikers that were on the Trail in 1994. Yes there were far fewer backpackers on the Appalachian Trail back then, and yes we hiked without mobile phones, GPS, and a lot of the Internet knowledge that is available today. But I think you'll find that the basic spirit and experience of the Trail remains the same. So listen in as we talk about the A.T. - the hostels, hitch-hiking, the trail towns, wildlife, and that final climb up Katahdin. You will also hear our crew tell us what it takes to finish a thru-hike, what they miss most about long distance hiking, and how the A.T. changed their life for the better.
