From the 2025 Asian American Mental Health Conference "Navigating Transitions with Faith and Resilience: Asian American Mental Health Across Life Stages." This workshop presentation is by Dr. Julia Lee, titled "How Not to Die: All the Way to the Bitter/Better End," recorded January 18, 2025. Find out more about the conference here: https://ptsem.edu/academics/centers/center-for-asian-american-christianity/2025-mental-health-conference/. Abstract: In general, North American society has difficulty in contending with the issue of death and how it “works,” and this manifests in multiple different ways. Throw in some Asian culture into the mix, and the avoidance of the topic of death is magnified. In relating stories of the ways people die, we hope to gain some insights as to how we can die “to the Lord,” and how we might be able to start creating ways that, even in our deaths, we can testify to the world of the goodness of God, not only in our own lives, but in all of God's people. Rosie and James are back with another exciting episode! This time, they catch up with Great Britain Lioness Jane Banks and ex-rugby league referee Julia Lee to discuss the Pioneering Women in Rugby League project. This initiative aims to uncover, document, and celebrate the history of the sportswomen who paved the way for thousands of girls and young women to play the game today. They're inviting everyone to rummage through their memory boxes and see if you can dig out any souvenirs and mementos, no matter how big or small, and share them with the project to help piece together the history of women in rugby league. Later, Rosie chats with Mike Sharkey and Dave Lyon to talk about their incredible year of fundraising. Their teams have been working hard to raise money for three local charities: The Brick, Daffodil Dreams, and Wigan and Leigh Hospice. What does it mean to be Asian in a country where everything seems Black and white? Growing up, author and scholar Julia Lee says she spent much of her formative years angry about never being seen, ashamed that she felt powerless as a Korean woman, and suffering from generational trauma passed down from her immigrant parents. On Under the Radar with Callie Crossley, Lee said understanding her place in a racial hierarchy constructed around Black and white has been a complicated journey. "It's just that in our society and in our culture, being white means you get to be treated as human, and that is all I and so many people of color want," she said. "Unfortunately, when we look around, the only people who get to be treated as full human beings are white. And so it's not whiteness we want, we just want to be treated with humanity and humaneness." Lee explores this journey in her new memoir, "Biting the Hand: Growing Up Asian in Black and White America."

Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others.  Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Through her own story and those of asylum-seekers, wrongfully convicted inmates, and others, Dina Nayeri, author of The Ungrateful Refugee and her latest, Who Gets Believed?: When the Truth Isn't Enough (Catapult, 2023), examines whose stories are accepted and whose are rejected when the story you tell can determine your fate. Ilan Stavans, publisher of Restless Books and the editor of the anthology The People's Tongue: Americans and the English Language (Restless Books, 2023), talks about the many sources of American English, from Sojourner Truth to Bob Dylan and more.   These interviews have been edited slightly for rebroadcast; the original versions are available here: Having Fun US History (April 12, 2023) Why Whales Are Dying in NY and NJ (May 23, 2023) Julia Lee's Memoir/Manifesto of Being Asian in Black & White America (April 25, 2023) 'Who Gets Believed': Stories of Asylum-Seekers and Others (March 7, 2023) The Many Creators of American English (Feb 17, 2023)

Julia Lee performs her new essay collection that explores the complex lived reality of being the child of working class Korean immigrants in California. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss Lee's emotional performance of the audiobook. During the 1992 riots in her hometown of Los Angeles, Lee had a front-row seat to the horrors of white supremacy. As she attends college and moves on to grad school, she has her own racial reckoning as she examines her complicity in America's racial hierarchy. Lee communicates all of her anger and frustrations at the racism she experiences and sees around her. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Macmillan Audio. Many Ukrainian transgender people fleeing the war face discrimination and humiliation at border checkpoints. In this episode we discuss the personal stories of several trans people in Eastern Europe, two who struggled to get out of Ukraine after Putin's invasion due to discrimination by border guards who refuse to let them leave the war zone, and one teen in Moldova who tragically took her own life after years of harassment by kids at school and the parents of those kids, school administrators, and teachers. If you like our content please become a patron to get our premium episodes, and our public episodes ad-free! We discuss the stories of Edward Reese, Zi Faámelu, and trans woman named Judis. Edward was able to flee his home city of Kyiv to Denmark, but Zi, Judis, and Judis' friend Alice were not so lucky. They were all stopped at the Ukrainian border by border guards who attempted to forcibly enlist them into the army after the border guards declared them to be men. Ukraine is currently under martial law, and restricts all men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country. Zi managed to swim a narrow part of the Danube river... in February, and make it to Romania and then on to Germany. Judis and Alice didn't get out of the country, as far as we know they're still in Ukraine. 1, 2 Rainbow Europe lists Ukraine as the 39th of 49 countries in Europe in terms of the favorability of LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) rights. Prior to 2017, people were forced to self-commit to a mental institution for a month, sterilize themselves, divorce if they were married, and undergo gender affirmation surgery to appease the state rules in getting their gender changed on official documents. Since then the WHO has removed the "disorder" classification from transgender medical diagnoses and required all member nations to follow suit, the deadline is this year. In fairness, not all western European countries are much better off. The case that got the EU human rights court to outlaw forced sterilization was a ruling on homophobia. It was originally aimed at three gay men in France. 3 We next discuss the tragic story of Felis Joy, a trans teenager from Chișinău, Moldova who took her own life after harassment by teachers, school administrators, classmates, and the parents of those classmates. One of the teachers who failed to protect her from physical abuse even spoke in favor of transphobia and belittled Felis at her own funeral. Most of the primarily Catholic or Orthodox European countries are heavily biased against LGBTQIA people in their laws. Poland has even declared "LGBT free zones" which is funny considering how many priests there are in that country... 5 1. Julia Lee.
