In honor of Memorial Day, Robert Ross re-examines the origins of Jeep--a vehicle that ultimately turned the tides of WW2 for America. By delving back into interviews with author Paul Bruno and Director Head of Design for Jeep, along with a new interview with Randall Withrow of the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum (which houses an impressive collection of Jeeps used in the U.S. military, including the oldest surviving Jeep, the Ford Pygmy), Robert unpacks the underdog story of where Jeep came from and where it's going. Episode Timestamps: Prologue (0:00) - Robert introduces this very special episode examining the origins of Jeep and its pivotal role in WWII by considering where the name 'Jeep' actually came from. Past (3:39) - Paul Bruno, author of ‘Project Management in History: The First Jeep’ and ‘The Original Jeeps,’ explains the unlikely origins of the first models of Jeep--made with minimal time in a period of national crisis. Present (16:17) - Randall Withrow of the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum explains what has been done to honor and preserve Jeeps since WWII and explains how the museum came to have its collection--including the original Ford Pygmy, which is a part of the National Register of Historic Vehicles. Future (29:06)- Mark Allen, Director Head of Design at Jeep explains how the past designs inform the present and what the company has in mind for the future, as the brand growing into a worldwide name. Epilogue (36:28) - Robert muses on how such a small and simply made car could have impacted the world so greatly. Special thanks to Casey Maxon and the Historic Vehicle Association. She is officially the most patient guest we have ever had. Although her website is written in bullet points, there is so much that fits in between the lines. From accidents and injuries, she has worked her way up the triathlon ranks despite all odds. She has overcome abusive coach relationships, eating disorders, and injury cycles that lasted for years to become stronger than she ever has. It’s so refreshing to talk to someone who doesn’t sugarcoat hardships, but openly and honestly works through them in order to grow. We chat about new beginnings with the Real Triathlon Squad and a new coach. Triathlon is better for having Kelsey Withrow, and we’re better from our conversation. Trucking Stuff. This week on the show we talked about a cat that traveled in a Peterbilt from Canada to North Dakota. The cat was a stowaway on board a truckers semi. When the truck driver conducted a daily inspection of his rig, he found the black cat named "spooky". Jack Shao an active trucker called the phone number on the kitties collar and the rest was history. The phone call went to a veterinarian which in turn went right to the cats owner. A happy ending for the felines family. We also highlighted some issues for truck drivers drug screening. According to authorities, an increase in drug screen refusals is on the rise. Most truck drivers don't realize it but a refusal of a random or a pre-employment drug screen is equivalent to an actual drug screen failure. When going through the hiring process, a trucking company views a refusal and a failure equal and therefore in most cases a truck driver is turned down for employment. If you are in a state where "pot" is legal, you might consider avoiding these drugs all together. A CDL can be ruined by doing what a driver might think is his rights, being it is allowed by the state law. Unfortunately it is not allowed on a federal level and therefore dangerous to a truckers career. The refusals of rig screens on the rise could cause the FMCSA to mandate new testing. Truck driver kills 4 children while intoxicated Meet the hosts of TalkCDL Trucking Podcast Trucking Stuff. A truck driver from Ohio recently rear-ended a car and another semi truck on I70 in Indiana. Corey Withrow, 31, of Camden, Ohio, was arrested and charged with four counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death, and four counts of causing catastrophic injury while operating intoxicated. State police determined Withrow was doing 72mph when he struck the vehicles that had slowed down to merge in a construction zone. The vehicle ignited and resulted in the death of four children trapped in the car. Anesa Noel Acosta, 15; Quintin Michael McGowan, 13; Brekkin Riley Bruce, 8; and Trentin Beau Bruce, 6 were sadly the victims of this alleged drunk driver.
