Cameron Talbott is getting his first pro skate this week. What's crazy is that Cam is 37 years old, and while he was a sponsored am for a long time, he didn't achieve pro status until he was 25. While that's impressive, what's even more impressive are the hammers and creativity that define his skating. Not too bad for a kid who came up with nothing in Missoula, Montana. On the podcast, we talk about growing up with less, his badass mom, finding community in skating, SF, Valo, and so much more. It's a good one, with a double dose of Inappropriate Questions featuring Erick Garcia and Tom Hyser. Janelle Yip's path to becoming a pro skier was more unexpected than unconventional. She grew up as a skier on the slopestyle path, and while she loved it, being a comp skier wasn't in the cards for Janelle. So, after a gap year led her to Revelstoke, Janelle never gave up on her pro skier dreams, giving herself a 5-year window to make it happen. In year one, Janelle met the crew that would become “The Blondes," altering the trajectory of her life. In what started as a play for free beer, “The Blondes” took the ski world by storm and, in turn, launched three ski careers. On the podcast, Janelle and I talk about the influence of Windell's, starting an all-girls ski crew, Intersection, MSP, and so much more. One of Janelle's partners in crime, Emily Childs, asks the Inappropriate Questions. Klaus Obermeyer has had a bigger impact on skiing than any man alive, and when he wasn't innovating the sport, he was in Aspen or traveling the world to ski. He was often found surrounded by a harem of beautiful women. Klaus's incredible story started 105 years ago in Hitler's Germany where he was shot by Nazis trying to escape on his skis. From there, he came to America with nothing and eventually became one of the biggest business moguls in skiing. In part 1 of the pod-cast, we talk about making his skis, life in Nazi Germany, moving to the US with $10, Sun Valley, Warren Miller, and much more. Garrett McNamara is a world record-breaking big wave surfer and one of the pioneers of sport. What's crazy about Garrett's story is that while he achieved pro surfer status early on, his career didn't take off until his mid to late 30's when he became infatuated with riding giant waves. And then it exploded to the point where now, at 55, he's launching his 3rd Season of his “100 Foot Wave” series with HBO. Charlie Hoch is a former pro snowboarder turned cannabis entrepreneur, which makes him the perfect guest for 420 week. When I say pro snowboarder, while Charlie competed amongst the likes of Travis Rice and was on the podium at some big events, his snowboard career won't be what defines his existence; his success in the cannabis world will be. Stuart Rempel has one of those resumes. If you look at it, you know that he has lived an incredible life, and it all started with a ski bum mentality. Stuart went from pounding nails and skiing winters to running Salomon NA, Olin, K2 Skis, and Whistler. Most people at that level have a few degrees and plenty of suits. That's not Stuart, though. Throughout his career, he made it a priority to be on snow as much as possible, and the beta he gathered from the hill was used to make skiing better. It's another great business episode with an important person in the hardgoods and resort world, and Stuart's legendary neighbor, Mike Douglas, asks the Inappropriate Questions. Outdoor Research So I have a funny theory… I think most of our modern day melodies arise from the fact that we're simply indoors too much. ## There's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing My friend Mattias L told me the infamous Swedish saying; “there's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing”. And this is when we are in Stockholm in the dead of winter, and I still remember us being on a train terminal, him just wearing a light track jacket and trainers, not even wearing a jacket or a hat, or even winter boots. Certainly human desire fairer weather. For example, when we think in consider… Why were the ancient Greek so productive? One of the theories is that the Mediterranean climate is actually very very conducive to leisure and thinking! It does get cold, but not that cold. Not like Detroit cold.As a consequence, I think this encourages more people to be outdoors more often, which might be better for thinking, philosophizing, even military exercises? ## The secret of NapoleonOne of the things that Nietzsche talked a lot about was his admiration for Napoleon, and on describing how Napoleon was able to remain so productive healthy and strong, continual marches through the winter all year long, a life outdoors. ## spend more money on your clothes So once again… Then seems that the optimal strategy is if you want to spend maximum time outdoors, and train your body (askesis, body strengthening in Ancient Greek)-- to become more spendthrift with your clothing seems like a good idea. Typically the best fabrics include down, Merino Wool, alpaca, leather, -- typically animal fabrics seem to work the best. Why? If you're going to be butt naked in the middle of the winter, at night, perhaps having a mink fur is a good idea.
Gary Bigham is the most eccentric filmmaker this side of Greg Stump. You haven't heard about him because when he turned 18, he moved to Europe and became part of the fabric of European Freestyle culture, then he started making films with Europe and the world's best. When the risk of filmmaking became worth more than the reward, Gary did what he does best, entertain. And, between his Vitamin Ski Chalet and playing music in the bars of Chamonix, Gary will always be the center of attention somewhere and the world is better for it. Inappropriate Questions is how I close out every podcast and it has become a fan favorite. I get someone my guest knows well to ask their friend 3 questions and they can be anything, the more inappropriate the better. This week I went back into the archive from episodes 294 to episode 356 and pulled the best IQ questions and answers. Think names like Tanner Hall, AJ Kitt, Peter Line, Rachael Burks, JT Holmes, Colby Stevensen and many others. Rick Thorne is a BMX legend and the grind that he put in to achieve legendary status is why I do these podcasts. Rick wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth in a nice ski town. He grew up with a single mom, a sister, and the support of the infamous Kansas City bike crew, The BMX Brigade, led by Dennis McCoy. Through DMC, Rick saw a pathway to success, and, while it took a decade of grinding to make it happen for himself, Rick made it on his bike and headed west to the land of opportunity. The rest of the story is a total rollercoaster. On the podcast, we talk about the University of Olive Garden, the Hoffman influence, TV work, his band, and so much more. It's a do not miss episode, and the Inappropriate Questions come from none other than Mike “Rooftop” Escamilla Rick Thorne Show Notes: 4:00: Poop story, being an artist, Tattoos, his dad leaving young, growing up in Kansan City and getting into BMX 19:00: Liquid Force: Since 95, Liquid Force has outperformed the competition and turned a sport into a lifestyle. Guenther Oka was looked at as the best all-around wakeboarder in the world…and then he had a devastating knee injury. While there was uncertainty, Guenther worked his ass off during physio, put out a Red Bull project and this year, he's back to the competition scene. With podiums in his first 3 events back, not only has Guenther not lost a step, but he's stepped forward with a brand-new mindset, which could be scary for his competition. Luke Edgar knows how to tell a story; he has one about everything, and it's awesome. The dude always maximizes the gun meter. If you listened to Part 1, you know what I'm talking about. Part 2 with Luke talking more about Festical, one of events that fills the pages of his proven brand building-sell through strategy playbook and then we move on to discussing his moves to Atomic, Rossignol, Ogio, Skullcandy and Traeger. Luke Edgar has had a legendary career in building lifestyle brands and keeping them not only relevant but in demand. What makes Luke's story so wild is that while his history goes back to the early days of snowboarding, the reason he pursued a career in “action sports” is because he learned to surf while he was in the army. And when he got out, his life revolved around snowboarding when the sport was in its infancy in the PNW. On the podcast we talk about the early PNW snowboard scene, modeling, Craig Kelly, trade shows, getting sponsored, K2 and so much more. John O'Connor asks the Inappropriate Questions. Tommy Czeschin was born into a life of mountains and lakes, so it's no surprise that he loves snowboarding and water sports-but what's shocking is that he was able to go pro in both. Not too bad for the quiet kid with talent who started ski racing and was the forerunner for the Jr Olympics before seeing snowboarding and making the switch. Within 5 years, he was traveling the world with the US Snowboard Team, standing on the top of World Cup podiums, winning X Games medals, and eventually making the 2002 Olympic Team. After his snowboarding, he was an early adopter of wake surfing and these days, he gets paid to ride behind a boat among other things. It's kind of like Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, or a Shaun White-type story, only different. Don Wallace asks the “Inappropriate Questions” Tommy Czeschin Show Notes: 4:00: Wake Surf trips, growing up near Mammoth, ski racing, and snowboarding 12:00: Early contests, Mammoth snowboard team, making the US Snowboard Team and the traveling family 19:00: Liquid Force: Since 95, Liquid Force has outperformed the competition and turned a sport into a lifestyle. Red Gerard has won every slopestyle event out there: The Olympics, X Games, Dew Tour, World Cups, Grand Prix, you get the idea and Red is only 23 years old. While his life will be defined by his Olympic Gold, Red's snowboarding career isn't all about contests. He's just as comfortable taking his trick vocabulary to the backcountry and laying it down for his film segments. The beauty of Red is that while he's young, he's also kind of throwback. A kid who takes pride in competing, filming, and having a good time off the hill…On the podcast we talk about coming up in a big family, snowboarding, getting screwed by judges, sponsorship, contests and so much more. Ace Kvale has lived the ultimate ski bum life but he's no bum, Ace is a legend. A Midwest kid who hitchhiked his way west at 18 for bigger mountains and a better lifestyle. After a few years of resort hopping, Ace made his way to Europe, connected with Marko Shapiro, and became part of the original Clambin Crew. He started out living in a chalet in Verbier, traveling the world skiing for the camera, and he climbed in the summertime. Eventually, Ace's life transitioned to working behind the lens and is an award-winning photographer who focuses his talents on shooting adventure. Bobby Brown was a dominant force at contests starting in 2010, and by 2017, it looked like he was on his way to his second Olympic Games, until that dream was taken away by injury. Knowing that traditional contests weren't in his future, Bobby pivoted and took his tricks to the backcountry. While Lucas Foster is not a one-trick pony, when he landed his Alley Oop Double McTwist in the pipe, his career and his life totally changed forever. What's crazy is that Lucas grew up in Telluride, a place without a halfpipe, meaning Lucas came up learning his tricks at contests with barely any practice. Nowadays, Lucas has all the resources available to up the ante even more as he's a member of the US Snowboard Team, and at just 24, who knows what he'll add to his bag of tricks. Jeff Thomas is an award-winning filmmaker, a once-sponsored skier, and a guy who was born to be a baseball player. While he can still throw the ball at 85 mph, the day Jeffy's dad showed him the brochure to high North Ski Camp in the late '90s, Jeff's life went from boring baseball to the epicenter of the new school of skiing. At camp, he met his heroes, athletes, and his biggest inspiration, filmmaker Johnny Decesare —all of whom would become the forefathers of the sport and the lifestyle the twin tip movement bred.
