Katie and Bridget dismantle the He-Man-Women-Haters Club as they re-watch: The Little Rascals! It's a movie all about how you only meet your once in a lifetime friend - once in a lifetime (quote Stymie). Come along as we meet Spanky, the leader of the gang who is way too comfortable with execution, and his best friend Alfalfa, who is in love with the 6 year old feminist herself: Darla. When Alfalfa accidently burns down their clubhouse, the gang sets off to raise some money through hi-jinx and shenanigans. The gang learns some valuable lessons such as: "wood doesn't grow on trees", "nothing beats a duck with a buck!", and more importantly "can't we have a club because we like something!?" Will the Little Rascals earn enough money to rebuild their clubhouse ala go kart race? Does Whoopi Goldberg make the best cameo ever in this movie!? Released in 1994, it was directed by Penelope Spheeris and stars nearly an entire cast under the age of 9 alongside random, famous actor cameos!

It's my first show of 2024! For episode 75 I chatted with Jeff Kleinsmith, Adem Tepedelen, James Halada, and Shane Bastian – members of 90's Seattle band Stymie. Jeff is VP of Creative at Sub Pop Records and he was also my guest for episode 46. This time we talk Toil & Folly, Stymie's new release on their label New Rage Records. Hear about Jeff's design process for this record, their other bands, New Rage, epic shows, and days at the Rocket Magazine–four of the six members of Stymie worked at the Rocket at one point! From the band: We raided the New Rage Records vaults to bring you Stymie's first full-length effort, Toil & Folly. This is an unearthed Seattle gem from the early 90s, a perfect document of a band equally influenced by grunge, noisy indie rock and other heavy sounds of the era. Toil & Folly is a collection of (mostly) previously unreleased material recorded in Seattle between 1992-1995. The majority of the songs were recorded and mixed by noted indie rock producer/engineer Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Earth, Truly, Big Business) and all tracks were freshly remastered in 2021 by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering. Take a trip into Seattle's underground past and learn about how this record came to be. Design Freaks on Youtube and wherever you get podcasts. Thanks for tuning in! visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and moreWhen DAWN SILVA – (Brides of Funkenstein, P-Funk, GAP Band, All My funky Friends] – shopped her autobiography, The FUNK QUEEN to book publishers, they didn't exactly grasp the entire vision. “Everybody said the same thing,” she says. “‘You can't do it.'” This is because the OG funkateer had created something you don't see on shelves every day. “Mine is not only a table book with classic photos,” she explains. “It also has an autobiography, and there‘s about maybe five books within that one book.” Gathering the photos was a tale unto itself, starting with a man by the name of Steve Labelle, an ex-police officer turned photographer who traveled with Parliament Funkadelic from 1976 to 1981. “He was a fanatic,” she recalls. “So he went out on the road with us for all those years and he took all these photos… His health took a turn for the worse and he had been sitting on those photos for about 30 years… So he asked me to make him a promise that, if he sent those photos to me to me, I would put them in my book.” So she raised the capital and had it manufactured herself—a seven pound (!) hardcover masterpiece in the form of a beautifully printed, glossy package containing over 500 pages of rich funk history, way more than knee deep with amazing and tragic tales, as well as brushes with funk and soul greatness that will inspire ladies young and old while imbuing the fellas with a greater respective for Dawn's legacy. And just like everything else in her storied career, she had done exactly what the powers that be had said she couldn't do. “I took a chance because everyone said I couldn't do it and it wouldn't work,” she confirms. “And it's working.” Taking chances is what made Dawn a professional singer in the first place. As a young lady, her first major singing gig was as a member of a latterday version of Sly & the Family Stone. Then she jumped ship—mothership that is—and, along with other funk queens whom Dawn calls “thoroughbreds”—she appeared across all P-Funk platforms, from Parliament's Motor Booty Affair and Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome, to Funkadelic's One Nation Under Groove and Uncle Jam Wants You. Her voice can also be heard all over such essential, stanky classics as Eddie Hazel's beloved solo album Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs, and the Sweat Band and Horny Horns albums. Even more importantly, she took center stage to co-lead the BRIDES OF FUNKENSTEIN, whose funktastic albums Funk or Walk and Never Buy Texas from a Cowboy are still much admired today. Dawn did eventually break away, however, recording and touring with artists such as Ice Cube, Roy Ayers, the GAP Band, and even the Platters. But her best work was not behind her. She decided to put the album out herself on her own independent label. She also expanded her reach by being an early adopter of online forums—where a million plus fans could follow her directly—and entered into indie licensing deals in places like Holland, Germany, France, Japan, China, Thailand, and Sierra Leone. “I ended up selling over a quarter of a million CDs out of my kitchen,” she says, “from a ‘dead' market, supposedly.” If all that weren't impressive enough for a woman in funk, her promotional activity overseas led to a headlining gig (!) at the mammoth North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands alongside Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, and the Yellowjackets. And by the way: Funky Friends is still selling today. “I proved to the naysayers, to corporate record companies in the states that here was a very viable market for the funk,” Dawn surmises proudly. “Actually, it's even bigger today than it was then. That's why I continue on.” In this thoughtful, revealing, and illuminating interview, Dawn promotes the legacy of other fem funk legends, from Malia Franklin to Gail Muldrow, and how they were instrumental in pushing P-Funk to the top of the heap despite not getting the recognition they are still due. She also reveals how the Sly Stone Fam paid more and was better organized than the Clinton camp, and recalls how the late, great Glenn Goins taught her to sing funky lyrics with character. On top of all that, Dawn discusses why her friend James Baker's New Birth was one of the most influential self-contained Black bands in funk history, exciting news about her plans to finally put out certain unreleased material, and the importance of her African-Indigenous-European lineage.Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanExecutive Producer Scott Sheppardw/ Content Produced by Dawn SilvaWebsite & Graphics by 3chards Recorded & Filmed @Different Fur Studios, San FranciscoEngineered by Grace Coleman Video shot by Cedric Letsch w/ Jarrett Rogers Video & Sound Editing + Graphics by Nick “WAES” Carden for Off Hand Records, OaklandIntro song “Inertia” by Ace Alan (feat. At the same time, the commission's Republican regulators take in millions of dollars from the fossil fuel industry. POLITICO's Ben Lefebvre breaks down how the regulatory agency's actions are at odds with one of President Joe Biden's key climate policies. Alex recaps the game and why quarterback Ben Bryant deserves credit for his bounce back performance. Could this be the start of a November surge for Bryant? Once again, the Cincinnati Bearcats BlackCat defense showed up to stop Navy's triple option offense. Alex explains why fans shouldn't take their success for granted against triple option offenses and hypes up the incredible performances of Dontay Corleone and Ivan Pace Jr. on Saturday. Then, in a shocking comment made after the game, Alex sets the record straight who thinks Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell should be fired (yes, it really happened!) Mike Riste serves as the historian for the BC Golf Museum, and is the official historian for the PNGA. He assembled the initial research for “Washington Golf: 100 Years of Growing the Game,” the centennial history book of Washington Golf, published in 2022.Mike may claim he is not a writer, but his body of work is substantial. He co-authored the monumental “Championships & Friendships,” the centennial history book of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA); and wrote “Just Call Me Mac,” the biography of noted Northwest course architect, A. Vernon Macan. He first became involved in golf in the spring of 1960 when Capilano Golf and Country Club (in West Vancouver, B.C.) advertised for caddies for their opening day tournament. Mike would later become the very first Evans Caddie Scholarship recipient from the Northwest. In 1986, when the University Golf Course clubhouse (in Vancouver, B.C.) came vacant, MIke assembled a group of volunteers to renovate the structure into a golf museum. Today, BC Golf House is in a building that is the oldest structure still used for golf in B.C., and the BC Golf Museum is the only provincial or state standalone golf museum in North America. In 2013, Mike received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northwest Golf Media Association.
How something is communicated to us can have a major impact on the reception of that idea. For instance, Joel's wife has been known to offer great advice to him over the years- but he often only comes around when a friend makes a similar remark! He suddenly sees the light because even though the advice is the same, the context is different. It's only then that he takes action. And similar patterns emerge when it comes to our susceptibility to advertising and marketing. Our subconscious often coalesces to marketing tactics that we tend to think we're impervious to. We're not quite as rational as we think we are, and those marketing tricks often nudge us towards buying things we don't need and spending money we hadn't planned on parting with. So listen as we identify some of these marketing maneuvers and the steps you can take to avoid becoming a mindless consumer. Want more How To Money in your life? Boy did we ever praise Bayern to the skies last week after they put the hurt on a Bundesliga opponent for the second time in three games! But this past weekend, on the fourth match day, Borussia Mönchengladbach came to the Allianz - and if you know your recent history, that means trouble for the Rekordmeister. This time, the trouble was named Yann Sommer, who stonewalled Bayern into a 1-1 draw. Matt invites the excellent Derek Rae (ESPN, EA Sports FIFA series) on to talk the result over, to get his thoughts on the draws of all eight BuLi sides in UEFA competition, and much more. In parts of the Midwest where lead mining and smelting lasted for over a century, communities are still dealing with toxic waste left behind by the industry.Lead, a dangerous neurotoxin, persists in the environment, including in water and soil, where it can pose a threat to the health of people living nearby. The risk is especially acute for children, who can unintentionally ingest lead by putting their hands in their mouths and whose brains and bodies are still developing. It can be spread to other areas, like yards and schools, by rainfall, and can also taint aquifers or vegetables in gardens, making them harmful to consume. Now researchers are working to limit the impact of lead in the environment on people, and they believe they've found a promising solution: Plant life.

On March 25, 2022, the Connecticut Government Administration and Elections Committee heard public testimony regarding SJ 30 RESOLUTION PROPOSING A STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO RECOGNIZE A RIGHT OF PERSONAL REPRODUCTIVE AUTONOMY AND FREEDOM. Rabbi Leiter was given the opportunity to share a three minute testimonial opposing the resolution. Rabbi Leiter is the Executive Director of Help Rescue our Children. His prepared remarks: (25 March,'22) BS"D Thank you for this opportunity. My name is Rabbi Noson Shmuel Leiter, Executive Director of Help Rescue Our Children, which opposes child molestation and human trafficking, among other things. I respectfully urge the legislators to oppose SJR30, which would ensconce what's described as "personal reproductive freedom and autonomy" into the Connecticut constitution. In addition to other crucial concerns aforementioned, legislators ought consider how this proposed constitutional amendment could eventually be employed by judges to STYMIE laws that help reduce teen pregnancy, and even child exploitation, & human trafficking. For instance, a Judge could rule that Age-Of-Consent or anti-trafficking laws unduly limit "reproductive freedom or autonomy." The same could be said about parental consent laws. Such a provision could even potentially result in closing Crisis Pregnancy Centers, thereby disproportionately punishing the poor and disadvantaged. Furthermore, to the extent that this amendment would facilitate recreational abortion, it would imbed state-mandated mass-killing of babies into the constitution. As such, it would (1) constitute the ultimate betrayal of the most innocent and defenseless citizens; (2) it would contravene the most foundational mandate of government, namely safeguarding innocent life; and (3) it would constitute rebellion against G-d and His Law, as it applies to all Mankind. Abortion-on-demand is unquestionably, absolutely prohibited, EVEN according to THE most lenient or permissive views within the corpus of authentic Judaism. Today we tell the story of one of the great lost elements of match-play golf: the stymie. A stymie occurred when one player's ball on the green ended up between the hole and the opponent's ball. Unless the balls were within six inches of one another, the ball closer to the hole could not be lifted. The player who was away simply had to figure out what to do next. When the governing bodies eliminated the stymie in 1952, more than a curious little quirk of match play was lost, according to our guest Stephen Proctor. In a conversation with Garrett Morrison, Stephen argues that the stymie embodied a larger attitude toward the game—an attitude that fell out of favor in the mid-20th century, but one that is worth remembering, and perhaps reviving, today. Stephen's book The Long Golden Afternoon is available for pre-order now.

Great guy and friend of the show David Aragona stops in and joins me and Andrew Grismore to talk NYRA and preview some races including the Stymie.
Stymie is, in my humble opinion, a musical genius and represents the spirit of San Francisco more than any landmark when I think about the city. His ability to hear a sound, or mentally visualize an idea for a song is incredible. I first met Stymie when I joined Stymie and The Pimp Jones Orchestra on bass, and he also is part of the band Soul Ska. In this episode we talk about his upbringing in Hollywood, his artistic ventures, and his past and current songwriting projects. - Live At Five is an Anchor Eighty Four Media original.
