Did you know that most of your New Testament scripture can be traced back to a church in a city called Antioch? Many people are only vaguely familiar with this prophetic community, which could arguably compare to Jerusalem in terms of its implications for New Testament Christianity and lasting impact on the global Church. Before there were churches covering Asia Minor, before there were epistles that would be read by countless people throughout history as inspired scripture, there was a spiritual family made up of people from many different backgrounds, ethnicities, and vocations living out a value system together. This place became the "sending center” of the New Testament. God is raising up "Antioch Sending Centers" across the earth in this generation for the finishing of the task of Great Commission. They will be Presence-Centered families, nurturing and sending laborers to neighborhoods and nations. The blueprints for these communities can be found in chapters 11 and 13 of the book of Acts concerning the church in Antioch.

We're beginning a new series! Over the next few episodes, we will be taking a look at Jesus. If we are called to follow Jesus and build our life after his example, it's pretty important to be well acquainted with the life he lived. In this episode, we take a look at Jesus' gentleness.

When the Messiah encounters broken people, how does He respond? What kind of people does He turn away? The answers to these questions may seem counterintuitive, but Matthew traces Jesus' words through these themes and helps us to see how He handles both blasphemous rulers and bruised reeds. -- New to Heritage? In this first message of 2022, Lewis Roderick takes us to words that have brought comfort to weary saints for centuries. Are you bruised? There's many reasons why you may be. But Jesus has made you a promise: he will not break you. More than that; if you come to him, he will heal you. During the message Lewis referenced Alan Noble's blog on Robin Williams' death. You can read the full article here https://christandpopculture.com/existence-becomes-seemingly-impossible/ And he closed by quoting Richard Sibbes' masterpiece, The Bruised Reed. Hope for Bruised Reeds and Smoldering Wicks - Jeff Strong - Sun Jun 27, 2021 by Nelson Covenant Church
In this life, there are so many ways to become bruised. What is God to do with wounded, bruised people like us? If you have a plastic grocery bag that gets a hole, you don't save it. You don't try to fix a disposable grocery bag. You throw it away and get a new one. Seven billion other, better grocery bags fill our world. Why duct tape a ripped and ruined one? Thankfully, that is not how God treats us. His ways are not our ways. In Isaiah 42 we read about the compassion of our Healer. “A bruised reed He will not break,” Isaiah writes, “And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish” (42:3). Advent: A Community of Bruised Reeds and Smouldering Wicks
Jesus doesn't trample on the smoldering wick, or discard the bruised reed. He will not put your last little bit of light out, but invites you to trade your sorrows for his joy- to trade the bondage of besetting sin for the sweet freedom of his grace. The Lord's chosen servant is gentle and compassionate. He aggravates the religious folk by calling tax collectors to be among his disciples, by eating and drinking with sinners, and by healing on the Sabbath day. In love he comes into the mess we've made of our lives and saves us, making us a testimony of his transforming grace.

Rev. Randy Martin • Isaiah 42:1-9 • Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. 9 Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

At some point in life, every believer will go through seasons when they feel bruised and beaten down by trials. During those times, discouragement can cause our spiritual fire to dwindle and almost burn out. How wonderful to know that Christ has promised He will never break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering […]

Sometimes we get in such a bad place, there are no words that adequately describe it. But Jesus knows - and He cares.
by Gil Kracke
Whether it’s online or in real life, we have our true self - the self with all its insecurities and struggles and joys and quirks. And then there’s our filtered self, the self we wish we were. The filtered self might look like our true self, but maybe isn’t totally what we’re actually like. Maybe we picked The Smart Filter, or the Put Together Filter, or the Hipster Filter. Some of us are wearing the Don’t-Hurt-Anybody’s-Feelings Filter, or the Perpetual Critic Filter, or the I’m in Control Filter. But whether or not we hang outside office buildings in creepy cloaks and masks, or filter or photoshop our lives, to an extent, we all do this kind of life editing in one way or another.
Isaiah 42:1-9

Bruised Reeds and the Branch
Ok, you know me by now. I often listen to the radio Sunday Mornings, and this time I was listening to Dr. (sic) David Jeremiah... Who sent out advice about what to say to God at Judgement seat... And the advice was so bad that I totally retasked the show to address this. See, it's one thing to get the Gospel wrong and leave your congregation to wonder to themselves about what to do, but it's another thing entirely to give them what to say to God... WHEN IT MOST COUNTS... and get that SO wrong that you're sure to hear the Claxons go off and the price is Right "awww" must play just before the Angels chuck you into the Lake of fire. "BZZZZZZZZZ"... Wrong guess there dude. No Consolation prize.
This message was based on Isaiah 42:1-6 and Matthew 12:15-21 and was originally preached on August 17, 2008 by guest preacher Tom Drayer, Pastor of Congregational Care at Third Christian Reformed Church in Denver, Colorado..
