Bryce Edwards talks to Nicholas about the recent Labour Party conference over the weekend. Whakarongo mai nei.
Today marks a year since the coalition government of National, Act and New Zealand First took office. The coalition hit the ground running, by reversing the previous Labour Government's agenda in a ‘policy bonfire', slimming down the public service, and reverting many Crown organisations to their English names. This, and the scrapping of the Māori Health Authority, kickstarted tensions between this Government and Māoridom – with backlash on the Treaty Principles Bill only adding fuel to the flames earlier this month. But, with wins around tax cuts, benefits for families, more regional investment, and new laws to tackle crime --there's plenty for the Government to celebrate – with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon saying this week he is ‘aspirational' for New Zealanders' and ‘energized' for the next two years. To discuss how the coalition government has fared with all this in mind, today on The Front Page, we're joined by political commentator and researcher Bryce Edwards. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. A political analyst suggests the Greens are already confident of the outcome from tonight's meeting on Darleen Tana. More than 200 delegates will discuss whether to ask the Speaker to remove Tana from Parliament. The now-independent MP has lodged an appeal against a High Court decision supporting the party's disciplinary process against her. Victoria University's Bryce Edwards says this has dragged on and on for the Greens. "I think they should have stepped back from this months ago - it's already an embarrassment - but now they've gone down the path. I think Chlöe Swarbrick would really need to know she's got the backing." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So Luxon is back in the news. Bryce Edwards written a piece saying our members of parliament own 2.3 homes per MP - more than most of us. Jacinda made $330,000 on her property while Prime Minister. Luxon has made close to half a million dollars on his properties. Now let's really talk about a capital gains tax, because we essentially have one on investment property - the bright line test. You can argue over how long that should be, and governments have changed this from red to blue, from 10 to 2 years. But let's sideline property for a second and talk about business. Do you really think it's fair to tax capital gains on the sale of business? Business owners take huge risk, work incredibly hard and have to deal with stress, late nights, untold hours of lost sleep. They also employ people, pay them, pay tax on earnings, help support jobs, grow the economy, provide tax base of hospitals/education etc. Then when they finally are either burnt out or wanting to move on grow something else, bang! We hit them with a tax on their earnings. It doesn't seem fair to me. We need people to invest confidently into their businesses and grow them for the benefit of all of us. I don't think a capital gain tax on business will achieve that. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Disgraced ex-Green MP Darleen Tana says she doesn't accept the findings of the report that's prompted calls for her resignation. Following a months-long investigation into her knowledge of alleged migrant exploitation at her husband's business, Tana has resigned from the Greens. Political analyst Bryce Edwards says Tana's response today is the only one possible. He says if she wants to fight to stay in Parliament she has to contest what the Greens are saying. There's a view the investigation of allegations against Te Pāti Māori should be more co-ordinated. It's been alleged that information collected at Manurewa Marae was used to help the party's election campaign, which it denies. Stats NZ has appointed an investigator, a complaint's been laid with Police, and the Privacy Commissioner says he's talking to agencies on next moves. Commentator Bryce Edwards told Heather du Plessis-Allan that it should be approached in a more organised way. He says each agency shouldn't all do separate investigations.
