Atreyu are an American Metalcore band from Yorba Linda, California. They formed in 1998 and released their debut record Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses in 2002, before their sophomore effort The Curse left an indelible mark on the scene in 2004. In reference to Atreyu's sound Adrien Begrand of PopMatters said "Atreyu is too goth to be emo, too metal to be punk, and too brazenly emotional to be metal". He also noted the way the band fused elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, gothic rock, hardcore punk, thrash metal, blues rock, emo, hard rock, screamo and melodic death metal. From First to Last are not your typical scene band, they are the typical scene band. Their rise to emo superstardom leaned heavily on popularity they developed on then-blossoming social media website Myspace which played a significant role in the promotion of music in the mid-2000s and the band thrived there. From First to Last's significant history is well documented as one of the scene's most promising young bands, burdened at the peak of their success by their singers' ailing vocal chords and his later solo musical success, ultimately leading the band to struggle to meet their potential. Releasing their debut self-titled album in 2002, The Used, a 4-piece rock band from Orem, Utah were a part of the proliferation of emo music in the mainstream. With impressive instrumentation, emotive vocals and dark lyrical themes their debut full length has been described as the type of first record every band would want to make and one that can't be placed in a specific genre. In different quantities it contains punk, pop-punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, and some bits of screamo. Fellas, we’ve hit a milestone today. Episode #50! I can’t believe that we’re already 50 episodes into the podcast. It’s been an amazing ride so far. I know I’ve personally benefited a TON from the different interviews and guests we’ve had on the show. And based on the feedback I’ve received from you all I know you have been gaining a lot from it as well. Men, one of the regions we tend to struggle in is with developing meaningful relationships with our brothers in Christ. God put in us this need for other men to be in our lives to help sharpen us, keep us accountable, and to lock shields with as we go to battle against Satan. The problem is that with our busy lives, seemingly endless commitments, and responsibilities as husbands and fathers it’s extremely difficult to find or make the time to develop these kinds of relationships. Plus sometimes we feel guilty if we take time away from our families to hang with other guys. Additionally, issues such as trust, pride, and fear of being known hold us back from really pursuing meaningful relationships, biblical relationships with other men. And in some cases there just might not be other guys near you who are available or willing to be that “iron that sharpens iron” in your life. Today I’m joined by Tom Schwab. Over the years Tom has been involved in several different groups of men and has gained a lot of experience in how to develop meaningful relationships with other men. We talk about some of the issues men face as they try to develop these relationships and some possible solutions that we now have available now that the internet and social media make possible. Shownotes are at dadhackers.us/050
Before Jammcard, a job platform for musicians didn’t really exist. So after working as a drummer for years and recognizing the need for it, Elmo decided to build it himself, and he told us all about it. Build-A-Band is back! In our first new episode since launch, we remember how to make a podcast with a little help from our friends
There’s something paranormal afoot in this episode of Build-A-Band! An unquiet ghoul lurks in Chris’ iTunes library (and they love American Authors). A witch wields a cursed conductors baton that makes an orchestra’s instruments disappear (but the show must go on!). Sufjan Stevens releases a line of custom bath products (so it’s not all bad […]
Quomodo potuit? According to google translate, that’s Latin for “how hard could it be?” which is one of our many mottoes here at Build-A-Band! In this episode, we talk about how hard it would be to manage a girl group made up of cats, the angst of being a dog person with no dogs, and […]

This week’s guest is one of those people insecure guys like me can’t stand. Not only is Judah Akers building an incredible music career in his band, Judah & The Lion, but before that, he was a star collegiate ATHLETE, playing baseball for the Belmont Bruins. If that weren’t enough to make you hate the guy, he’s really handsome AND genuinely kind too. I sat down with Judah in front of a small audience in Nashville at the sneaker and streetwear shop, ROOTED to talk about his journey and how he’s coping with the growing pains of being in a burgeoning folk hop & roll band. I hope you enjoy this week’s conversation with Judah & The Lion’s Judah Akers.
We hold the Choo-In Hall of Fame inductions every year around the time of the actual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions. The Choo-In Hall of Fame is intended to recognize artists that are unlikely to ever be enshrined into the actual Rock Hall, but we feel are equally deserving of the recognition. This year, Levi inducts guitar god Roy Buchanan, Jonathan inducts Seattle mainstay Mudhoney and Gabe welcomes Tesla. We then conduct our first ever Build-A-Band by holding a fantasy draft which includes all of the 2017 Rock Hall inductees. Jonathan also shares a story of an unlikely encounter with a Royals player outside Kauffman Stadium earlier in the week.
