Send us Fan MailWhy is it that one piece of criticism can stay with us for years, yet we quickly forget the things that are going well? The answer lies in our psychology. Human beings are wired to spot threats and problems. It's how we survived. But in today's world, that negativity bias can leave us stressed, anxious and focused on what's wrong. In this episode, James is flying solo exploring the science of gratitude. Not as a fluffy self-help idea, but as a practical tool for improving wellbeing, resilience and perspective.James looks at what psychology tells us, why gratitude works, and how you can train your brain to notice more of what's good in your life. Send us Fan MailThis week, I, Claire - go solo for a beautiful conversation with executive coach Hazel Martin and, honestly, this episode went somewhere completely different from where I expected. We started out talking about career change for midlife women and how our purpose shifts as we enter our menopause years, but what unfolded was a much deeper conversation about the stories we tell ourselves, the dreams we've quietly put on hold, and why so many women reach midlife feeling disconnected from the parts of themselves that once felt most alive. If you've ever wondered, "Is this really it?" or felt there's something more for you, I truly believe you'll love this conversation. Hazel shares powerful insights about self-talk, courage, joy, and the tiny steps that can completely change the direction of your life. More than anything, this episode is an invitation to remember who you were before the world told you who you should be.Connect with Hazel on Linkedin:https://www.linkedin.com/in/hazelmartincoach/Via email: hazelnorval@gmail.comOr by phone: +44 7796 176928 Support the showBook your Follow The Camino break at the below link:https://followthecamino.com/en/Or email: info@followthecamino.com Use Code: MIDLIFE10 for your exclusive 10% offer - for all trips booked in 2026 (departure date can be in 2027). Exclusions: This offer is not applicable to Budget or Guided Tours.Applicable Routes: The discount is exclusively available for pilgrims choosing the French, English, Portuguese (inland routes), and Original ways.Blackout Dates: To maintain the sanctity and manage the flux of pilgrims during peak events, the discount will not apply if you are reaching Santiago de Compostela from the 24th to the 28th of July 2025, aligning with the city's famous festivities. You feel restless, disconnected, flat... or perhaps you're questioning things that once seemed certain. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. In today's episode, we're talking about one of the most common but least discussed experiences of midlife: the shift in identity that happens as our roles change, our priorities evolve, our bodies and hormones change, and we begin asking deeper questions about who we are and what truly matters. We'll explore why so many men and women feel lost during this stage of life, how it shows up in everyday behaviours, and most importantly, how to navigate it with greater clarity, self-compassion and hope.Because this isn't about having a midlife crisis. It's about discovering who you are becoming.Book your Follow The Camino break at the below link:https://followthecamino.com/en/Or email: info@followthecamino.com Use Code: MIDLIFE10 for your exclusive 10% offer - for all trips booked in 2026 (departure date can be in 2027). When Fatherhood Doesn't Happen: A Conversation About Male Childlessness With Dr. Robin Hadley

The Midlife Mentors

Send us Fan MailToday's episode is a really important conversation and honestly, one we don't hear enough about.Because Claire has spoken about female childlessness on this podcast a few times, but we've not discussed male childlessness… particularly the emotional impact of it, the silence around it, and why so many men feel they have to carry that experience alone.Whether it's through circumstance, infertility, relationships not working out, or simply life not unfolding the way someone expected, involuntary male childlessness can have a profound effect on identity, mental health, relationships, and how men see themselves in the world. Yet unlike the conversations we often have around women and fertility, men's experiences in this area are rarely talked about openly. So today, we're joined by someone who has dedicated years of research to understanding exactly that. Dr. Robin Hadley is an author, researcher and leading voice on male childlessness and male fertility narratives. His work explores the psychological, emotional and social impact of childlessness in men, and why so many feel invisible in conversations around fertility, masculinity and family life. This is a really honest, thoughtful and emotional conversation about identity, grief, masculinity, relationships, ageing, and the expectations society places on men.So whether this topic affects you personally, someone you love, or you're simply curious to better understand the male experience - this is an episode well worth listening to.Rob's has offered listeners 35% off the hardbaack edition of his book - using the code: HAD35 and 25% off the ebook using the code: HAD25.Click HERE to purchase and redeem your money off.https://www.berghahnbooks.com/title/HadleyHowRob's website: https://www.robinhadley.co.uk/  Support the showBook your Follow The Camino break at the below link:https://followthecamino.com/en/Or email: info@followthecamino.com Use Code: MIDLIFE10 for your exclusive 10% offer - for all trips booked in 2026 (departure date can be in 2027). Hola Chicos, welcome back to Spanish Loops. This week, we're stepping inside one of the most structured, fascinating systems in the world: the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. You've seen the titles: Pope, bishop, priest, but what do they actually mean? And more importantly… Why is it all organized this way?Let's break it down, simple and clear. At the very top, you have the Pope. Think of him as the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide. But this isn't just about authority, it's about unity. The role exists to keep the Church connected, consistent, and guided under one vision. Then comes the bishops. These are the ones in charge of entire regions, called dioceses. They're like the bridge between the global Church and local communities. Their job? Oversight, teaching...Below them, priests. These are the people you actually see every week celebrating Mass, guiding communities, being present in everyday life. They're the closest link between the Church and the people. And yes, there are more layers... Archbishops, Cardinals..., but here's the key idea: this structure isn't random. It's been shaped over centuries to maintain order, preserve tradition, and allow the Church to function on a global scale without losing its local connection. So why this hierarchy? Because when an institution spans continents, cultures, and centuries, structure becomes essential. It's not just about power: it's about responsibility, continuity, and identity.By the end of this episode, you won't just know who's who. You'll understand why it all works the way it does.Let's Loop in.For Jorge: Small Group Tours in Spain & PortugalWebsite: https://travelingwithjorge.wordpress.com/Small group tours Spain, cultural tours Spain and Portugal, authentic travel experiences, guided tours for mature travelers, food and wine tours Iberian Peninsula. If you're dreaming about discovering Spain and Portugal beyond the typical tourist routes, Jorge designs small group cultural tours that combine history, local gastronomy, wine experiences, and meaningful human connections. GoNOMAD Travel Podcast: Pamplona's Running of the BullsThis week, host Max Hartshorne takes you inside one of Europe's most intense and iconic travel experiences: the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. With insight from Pamplona resident Losu Values, we explore what it really takes to watch the event—not just survive it—and how first-time visitors can actually understand what they're seeing. Most travelers arrive with a cinematic image in mind: bulls charging, runners sprinting, adrenaline everywhere. But the reality is more layered. The route changes character from section to section, and your experience depends entirely on where you stand and how early you prepare. We break down the difference between street-level and balcony viewing, explain why timing and geography matter more than chaos, and explore how the rhythm of the morning builds long before the bulls are released. Losu explains how locals read the route, anticipate the movement, and choose their vantage points with precision. We also quote a friend of Max's who has been to the San Fermin festival 48 times, every year since 1976, he explains what he loves so much. You'll learn why the run lasts only a few minutes but requires hours of preparation, how the old town's compact layout can confuse even seasoned travelers, and why clarity—not proximity—is the key to a memorable experience.Whether you're planning your first trip to San Fermín or just curious about what it's really like to be there, this episode gives you the insider's view of Pamplona's most famous morning.Listen now on the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast, hosted by Max Hartshorne. The weather administration is expected to lift the remaining land warnings by noon at the earliest, while the sea warning is expected to remain in place until this evening. Most of those effected households are in the Tainan area. Israel Houthis Trade Fire Israel's military launched airstrikes early today targeting ports and facilities held by Yemen's Houthi rebels, with the rebels responding with missile fire targeting Israel. The attacks came after a suspected Houthi attack targeting a ship in the Red Sea that caught fire and took on water, later forcing its crew to abandon the vessel. The Israeli military said it struck Houthi-held ports at Hodeida, Ras Isa and Salif. The Houthis then responded with an apparent missile attack on Israel. The Israeli military said it attempted to intercept (攔截) the missile, but it appeared to make impact, though there were no immediate reports of injuries from the attack. Pressure from Trump for trade deals before Wednesday deadline, but hints of more time for talks The U.S. is putting the pressure (壓力) on trading partners to make a new deal before a Wednesday deadline. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports. Spain begins BullRunning Festival Tens of thousands of revelers have packed Pamplona's town hall square in northern Spain to celebrate the traditional firework blast that marks the start of the San Fermin bull-running festival. The highlight of the nine-day festival, which started on Sunday, is the early morning bull runs, when thousands of runners sprint to avoid six bulls charging along a winding cobblestoned route to the city's bullring. The festival is not without controversy, with gorings and injuries among runners, as well as bull fights where animals that run int he morning are slain by professional matadors (鬥牛士) each afternoon. Following the festival successes but domestic box office failures of Salvatore Giuliano (1962) and Hands over the City (1963), Francesco Rosi decided an international picture would fix his money problem, and decided to make a documentary on the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. He didn't end up making exactly that, as The Moment of Truth (1965) is a narrative film with a neo-realist bent, and if you can get over all the ritualistic animal abuse it's probably the best bull fighting movie there is.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway audiobook. The Sun Also Rises (1926) was Hemingway's first novel to be published, though there is his novella The Torrents of Spring which was published earlier in the same year. The novel describes, expressed through the voice of Jake Barnes, a short period of social life that ranges from Paris to locations in Spain. One might say that the action occurs in Pamplona, Spain with the annual festival of San Fermin and its running of bulls and subsequent days of bullfights, but one can easily argue that the real interest of the novel is in its portrayal of the group to which Barnes is a part and how he details their anxieties, frailties, hopes, and frustrations. Friends of the Rosary: God always answers our prayers as long as they are intended to bring good things for us. However, our prayers may not be heard due to our personal disposition, our lack of faith, love, and humility. Whenever Christ performed a miracle, He demanded faith as a prerequisite. On one occasion the apostles could not heal a possessed body; to their queries, Jesus said, "Because of your little faith; for amen I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain: Remove from here, and it will remove. And nothing will be impossible to you" (Mt 17:19). Our lack of faith and love are certainly huge obstacles. If we ourselves neither give nor forgive, we can expect no favors from God.We continue praying the Rosary from the city of Pamplona, in Spain, in the midst of the San Fermin festival. It's the third time it's happened but it has to be said: it is wild that we're at the point where we have return guests to the pod. Honestly, what a privilege to welcome back Charlene Kaye (aka KAYE), a friend I deeply admire and an artist I'm a proper fan of. We first met when she was part of the Brooklyn-based outfit, San Fermin, and since leaving the band she's evolved into one of NYC's most daring artists. Part of achieving that has come from her ability, no, actually, more her desire for metamorphosis. A true testament to Charlene's character is how when many of us are running away from change, she's able to run toward it with open arms. Her latest release, Neon God, is a body of work that feels wholly reflective of its creator. Across the 5 tracks, Charlene projects a stylish ambition and a level of honesty that feels both vulnerable and defiant in equal measure. To get to the bottom of this, we decided to have this episode be a track-by-track, meaning we go into the stories of each song. The end result is a talk that's become the most personal episode of season 5, in a way that leaves me with so much gratitude and privilege. In addition to a stellar music career, Charlene also created/hosts one of my favourite podcasts; The Golden Hour. It's a truly beautiful podcast where Charlene interviews creatives of Asian and Pacific Island backgrounds about the intersection between artistry and identity. Season 2 just started, so be sure to catch the podcast over on Apple, Spotify, and where ever you listen to podcasts (also support the podcast through Anchor). Be sure to join Charlene and company at the second-ever Golden Hour Fest, which will be happening at Farm To People in Brooklyn. Tickets can be found here.
