What makes someone goth? Is it wearing lots of black eyeliner? Or is it spending a lot of time thinking about what a good ghost you'd be? Hopefully it's both, because we're recognizing World Goth Day by listening to two versions of eyeliner-loving Finnish band Hanoi Rocks's "Dead By X-Mas". First we tackle the 1980s original, and then hear the '00s update by Sohodolls. A content note: self-harm and abuse are talked about in this episode. It would be difficult to discuss this song without doing so! The ranking music in this episode is "Things Fall Apart" by Cristina. Thank you to CJ for requesting the Sohodolls cover of "Dead By X-Mas"!
On this episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with legendary glam metal frontman of Hanoi Rocks – Michael Monroe! The two start by getting into Michael's return to America after several years away, comparing the old to the new NYC, and Northeast music icons like Bruce Springsteen and Joey Ramone. They explore Michael and Hanoi Rocks' various musical influences, including Black Sabbath, Little Richard, Elvis, and Stiv Bators. Michael reflects on his upbringing in Sweden, from living on the streets and surviving to the early days of the band and their early glam looks and expression. He also spills the lowdown on pivotal interactions within his career, including asking Prince to produce the band, producing with Bob Ezrin, and making peace with Vince Neil. To close, Michael talks about the band's last gig and lists his top 5 records everyone should own. Tune into a music history-filled chat with legend Michael Monroe!CREDITS (Instagram handles)Host @scottlippsEdited by @toastycakesMusic by @robby_hoffProduced by @whitakermarisaRecorded at Melrose Podcasts LA Sonos makes it so easy to fill your home with incredible sound! By 1985, Motley Crue were in a tough place. Though they'd achieved success, wealth and worldwide fame thanks to their first 2 albums Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, the band were suffering from some setbacks. Vince Neil had driven his Ferrari while drinking and caused a crash that ended up killing his friend Razzle Dingley of Hanoi Rocks. As he worked to stay sober and navigate his legal issues, Nikki Sixx was deep into a heroin addiction that forced producer Tom Werman to get someone else in to rerecord his bass parts. But Shout At The Devil went 4x platinum and the record company needed a follow up to keep the band's momentum alive and in the public eye. The result was Theater of Pain, an album the band in later years has said was too polished and they blamed Tom Werman (not their own substance issues or limits as musicians) for the end product. However, it resonated with the public and sold another 4 million copies thanks to the big radio hits and MTV videos Smokin In The Boys Room (a Brownsville Station cover) and power ballad Home Sweet Home. Theater of Pain is less raunchy than Shout At The Devil, a byproduct of the slick production. We felt the riffs weren't as killer as they had been and outside of the big hits their aren't too many standouts. Louder Than Hell is a heavy song more akin to Black Sabbath than typical Motley but was from the Shout At The Devil sessions and doesn't sound like anything else on TOP. Use It Or Lose It might feature Mick Mars best solo shredding effort with typical cliche lyrics. But the songs had the Motley Crue attitude, had a couple of radio friendly hits and they toured for 8 months around the world to propel sales and keep themselves in the public eye. It may not be our favorite Crue record but it's the one that got our attention back in 1985 and we give it our track x track review at 40. Hyvää uutta vuotta Rock Around The Blogista! Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil totaled his Ford Pantera on a beer run, and in the process took the life of his friend Razzle Dingley, drummer for Hanoi Rocks. Bassist Nikki Sixx survived multiple heroin overdoses. Guitarist Mick Mars walked away from a blackout drunk drowning and drummer Tommy Lee lived through his own Caligula-like Sunset Strip sexcapades. Mötley Crüe, a degenerate band of death-cheating rock gods has us asking, “how are these dudes still alive?” Maybe they're the undead.
We are joined by Wyld Ryde bassist Mick Watkins (aka Dick Twatkins) to discuss Mötley Crüe's 1985 album. We make our obligatory "Vince Neil killed someone" jokes while also answering the big questions: Is Theatre of Pain better than most Crüe albums? Did Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee really write “Home Sweet Home”? Can Nikki really play bass? Is Nikki a racist? Did Vince end Hanoi Rocks or did they ruin their own careers with horrible music? And is Vince the true talent in Crüe? All this and more on this amazing episode…!!!
new Def Leppard, John Bush's Category 7 and Black Country Communion plus Warrant, Hanoi Rocks and more!
Faster Pussycat emerged from the wild Sunset Strip scene of the 80s, which gave birth to legendary bands such as Quiet Riot, Van Halen, and Ratt. The band introduced a more intense dose of glam and sleaze, which helped them secure a major label deal alongside their peers Guns N' Roses and L.A. Guns. Taime Downe, a Seattle native, fronted the band, and their debut album showcased a bluesy, pop-glam sound similar to The Rolling Stones and Hanoi Rocks. This post is public so feel free to share it.Downe teamed up with Brent Muscat (guitar), Greg Steele (guitar), Eric Stacy (bass), and Mark Michals (drums) to work with producer Ric Browde and craft a classic album that became a staple of the era. The album, released on Elektra Records, includes MTV favorites like “Bathroom Wall” and “Don't Change That Song,”. As Faster Pussycat embarked on the first tour, they supported a diverse range of artists, from Alice Cooper to David Lee Roth to Motorhead, honing their versatility and undeniable stage presence. Our deep dive into Faster Pussycat's self-titled debut on Dig Me Out reveals the highs and lows of an album that's as synonymous with the Sunset Strip's glam metal scene as teased hair and leather pants. We explore the tracks that define, delight, and sometimes divide, offering listeners a comprehensive look at an album that continues to resonate. In our exploration, we highlight the album's key tracks, noting "Bathroom Wall" and "Don't Change That Song" for their enduring appeal and MTV staple status, while "Babylon" stands out as an innovative yet ambivalent rap-rock hybrid. Despite its varied reception, the album embodies the rebellious spirit, chaotic nightlife, and unfiltered fun that marked rock 'n' roll's golden era on the Sunset Strip.Wrapping up the episode, special guest Sebastian Bach drops in to recommend an album for our review, adding another layer of rock authority to our discussion. Join us as we revisit this iconic slice of rock 'n' roll history, celebrating the sleaze, glam, and raw energy that defines an unforgettable decade in music. This isn't just a retrospective; it's a tribute to the timeless allure of rock music and the lasting legacy of Faster Pussycat and its Sunset Strip contemporaries.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Babylon * 10:22 - I Was Made for Loving You (KISS cover) * 27:50 - Bathroom Wall * 30:30 - Bottle in Front of Me * 35:25 - Ship Rolls In * 36:16 - Smash Alley * 40:55 - Shooting You Down * 41:09 - Look What The Cat Dragged In (Poison) * 43:34 - Cathouse * 46:00 - No Room for Emotion * 48:05 - Babylon * 1:04:20 - Special guest - Sebastian Bach * Outro - Bathroom WallMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. This isn't just another record; it's a wild ride through punk's grit and glam rock's glitter, all mashed up in a way only Hanoi Rocks could pull off. Imagine punk's raw energy slamming into glam's flamboyance—that's "Oriental Beat" for you, a genre-bending explosion that set the stage for hair metal to strut its stuff.Dig Me Out is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Diving into "Oriental Beat," you're tapping into the essence of Hanoi Rocks, featuring Michael Monroe's electrifying vocals, Andy McCoy's masterful guitar riffs, along with the rhythm foundation laid by Sami Yaffa on bass. It's worth noting that while Razzle is often remembered as the band's iconic drummer, it was actually Gyp Casino who pounded the drums on this particular album. His contribution set the beat for the groundbreaking sound that marked a turning point for the band and the broader rock world. This album is a deep cut spotlighting a band that, let's be honest, should be on every rock aficionado's radar. Hanoi Rocks wasn't playing games; they were laying down tracks that would inspire legends like Guns N' Roses and Motley Crue. And let's talk about the look—those teased hairs and that rock 'n roll swagger weren't just for show. They were pioneers, setting trends that would dominate the scene. But "Oriental Beat" isn't just about the tunes or the threads; it's the heart of Hanoi Rocks' story, marked by the tragedy of losing their drummer, Razzle. This event didn't just shake the band; it shook the whole rock world, adding a layer of depth and resilience to their legacy. It's this mix of innovation, influence, and sheer perseverance that makes diving into Hanoi Rocks such a compelling journey.Listening to "Oriental Beat," you're not just hitting play on a record; you're unlocking a piece of rock history that continues to resonate. This album invites us to explore its standout tracks that defy genre norms to the captivating narrative of a band that rocked the 80s scene, enduring as a touchstone for musicians and fans alike. So, here's to "Oriental Beat," an album that refuses to fade into the background, continuing to spark debates, inspire artists, and thrill new listeners. It's a testament to Hanoi Rocks' undeniable impact on the music world, a legacy built on innovation, style, and a spirit that's as infectious now as it was in the 80s. Hanoi Rocks might just be the best band you've never given a proper listen to, until now.Songs in the Episode* Intro - Oriental Beat* 18:39 - No Law and Order* 20:41 - Teenangels Outsiders* 22:21 - Sweet Home Suburbia* 25:17 - Visitor* 31:06 - Oriental Beat* 32:51 - Motorvatin'* 35:48 - Devil Woman* 46:10 - MC Baby* 47:45 - Fallen Star* Outro - Lightnin' Bar BluesMake Your Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 90s Rock, we rely on you, our listeners. On today's show, guitarist and singer/songwriter Steve Conte reminisces with Joseph over all the popular spots in New York City they've each played gigs and provides his assessment about just how much the NYC music scene has changed. Steve also plays a few licks on his guitar, including a full live version of his song (co-written with Andy Partridge) FOURTH OF JULY. GUEST OVERVIEW: Steve Conte is an American musician; guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer & music educator – both on tour and in studios around the world. His most recent album, Bronx Cheer was released on Little Steven Van Zandt's label, Wicked Cool Records in the fall of 2021 to great critical acclaim. The album spawned 5 singles, 3 of which were featured as “Coolest Songs In The World” on the Underground Garage Radio Program. Steve is currently working on a new release for Wicked Cool Records on which he has written 5 of the album's 10 songs with his songwriting hero – the incomparable Andy Partridge of XTC. Besides a rich solo-career, Conte has recently been instrumental in helping some legendary artists like the New York Dolls get their groove back. After 6 years, 4 albums and a never-ending World Tour with the Dolls, he joined up with former Hanoi Rocks front man Michael Monroe as guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist to release 5 albums of new original material. On the Horns And Halos album (2013 Spinefarm) Conte wrote the lion's share of the songs and it was nominated for “Album Of The Year” by the Finnish “Grammys” as well as The Nordic Music Prize. In addition to playing in the USA, Steve has toured extensively in UK, Holland, Belgium and France with his Netherlands-based band as well as playing solo shows in Spain, Italy, Finland & Sweden. https://stevecontemusic.com/

Ten years after she ceased publishing her 2000s rock'n'roll fanzine Bubblegum Slut due to the lifestyle it induced (i.e. drug addiction), Alison B. found herself producing a new zine about her old zine, the lifestyle it induced and the year she spent in limbo before getting clean. That zine is entitled Confessions of an Ex-Zine Editor and it is astonishingly original and entertaining. Partly a “trainwreck memoir” in zine format, it has the benefit of additionally being side-splittingly funny, what with its reviews of old clubs that are now train stations and of snail mail that no longer brings free CDs. With Confessions now up to Issue 3, Alison is also the first ongoing fanzine editor to be featured on this podcast.Alison is joined by Jane Appleby, who produced multiple different zines in the 1990s and early 2000s, including Jezebel, Bambi, This Is Our Truth, Pretty But Schizo, Pussy Rock, Jezebel, and Trophy F*ck. In conversation with Tony, Jane and Alison talk about their zines and the scenes from which they sprang, about sex and sexual stereotypes, about publishing and printing, about how the Manic Street Preachers inspired more zines than any other band of the era, about recovery Bingo and receiving explicit fetishist letters in the mail.Bands mentioned in this episode include Hanoi Rocks, Guns ‘n' Roses, the Manic Street Preachers, the Glitter Band, Sheila E, Shampoo, and We've Got A Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use it.Franchises mentioned in this issue include Taco Bell and Trust House Forte.Plus, Tony learns a new word: Edgelord.Alison's current Confessions of an Ex-Zine Editor and Bubblegum Slut can be found at https://www.instagram.com/bubblegumzinearchive/And copies can be ordered via:https://linktr.ee/bubblegumzinearchiveJane Appleby's fanzine archives can be found at: http://pussyrockfanzine.blogspot.com/She is active on http://tumblr.com/jaynedolluk The Best Of Jamming! can be found here and signed copies are available in the USA direct from https://tonyfletcherauthor.bandcamp.com/merch/ For Tony Fletcher's weekly newsletter, long weekend read, and for exclusive access to archived interviews, just visit tonyfletcher.substack.com. Hanoi Rocks Legendary Guitarist On Jukebox Junkie And 21st Century Rocks!#hanoirocks #andymccoy #guitar #jukeboxjunkie #21stcenturyrocks #newalbum Famed Finnish glam rock heroes Hanoi Rocks were never shy about wearing their collective influences on their fishnet sleeves. Starting with their acclaimed debut album, the group frequently included surprising cover versions among their killer original songs – from the Carol King penned “Walking With My Angel” to the bluesy folk of Hoyt Axton's “Lighting Bar Blues” to the smoking hot take on CCR's “Up Around The Bend,” which currently rides the top of the band's most played songs on the Spotify platform. Now, HR guitarist Andy McCoy taps into the rich musical history that inspired him on his own full-length album of highly addictive covers entitled Jukebox Junkie!Pre-order the CD/vinyl: https://cleorecs.com/store/?s=andy+mccoy+jukebox+junkie&post_type=productPre-order/pre-save the digital: https://orcd.co/andy_mccoy_jukebox_junkieWhen the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the Earth from spinning for a few years, several musical projects unfortunately ended up lost in the shuffle. One of those projects was a killer studio album from Finnish superstar Andy McCoy called 21st Century Rocks. As McCoy explains, “the album came out shortly before they closed the borders due to the COVID situation. So we couldn't support the record with a tour, but we're happy to see it being re-released!” This month, in fact, the album is being reissued on all formats to give fans who missed it the first time around their shot at experiencing this magical release.Order the CD/Vinyl: https://cleorecs.com/store/?s=andy+mccoy+21st+century&post_type=productStream/download the digital: https://orcd.co/andymccoy_21stcenturyrocksWebsite: https://www.andymccoy.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andy_mccoy_official/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/andymccoyofficial/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVGdOAX-6Jx36FDBMayuy3QThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

Sami YaffaHe called it the “worst-sounding album” of Hanoi Rocks' career, but after four decades, bassist Sami Yaffa and his legendary band have proudly righted the wrongs. He joins us to discuss the remixing and rerelease of 1982's “Oriental Beat,” his solo album and autobiography, plus his time in Jetboy and whether or not any Hanoi gigs could be up around the bend. I didn't discover Hanoi Rocks until around 1986-87 or so but once I did, they became a huge favorite of mine. It's hard to believe that it has already been 40 years since the release of Hanoi Rocks' sophomore album, Oriental Beat. 2023 doesn't just see Oriental Beat turning 40, we will see a much anticipated re-mix (or re(al)-mix as the band calls it) and for the first time nearly 30 years will see a vinyl release via Finnish label Svart Records. I had the honor of talking to legendary Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe about the re(al)-mix release of Oriental Beat as well as his 60th birthday concert that featured a reunion with the original Hanoi Rocks featuring original drummer Gyp Casino. We also talked about what it is that keeps him going and other cool stuff. Enjoy, y'all!
It's all about musings and music this week as host Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music Entertainment Editor) welcomes IT girl, icon, model and musician, special guest Bebe Buell. The author of a recently released 2nd memoir "Rebel Soul," Bebe has enough fascinating tales about 80's Rock & Roll for a whole episode on her own. Join us as she discusses dinner etiquette with Bryan Ferry, being produced by Ric Ocasek (The Cars), Stiv Bators (Dead Boys, Lord of the New Church), Elvis Costello, John Taylor (Duran Duran) & being the catalyst of Power Station plus more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

487 - Hanoi Rocks - Malibu Beach Nightmare: Chris, Nick, and Andy break down "Malibu Beach Nightmare" from the 1983 Hanoi Rocks album Back to Mystery City.
In the latest of Vintage Rock Pod's BIG name interviews (which include 17 Rock & Roll Hall of Famers) Paul speaks with the fascinating former lead singer of Hanoi Rocks, MICHAEL MONROE! "I Live Too Fast To Die Young" may be the name of his new album but it's also a line that could sum up Monroe! The charismatic lead singer is an icon in Finland, he and his band have been credited as being pioneers of the hair metal movement, have been lauded by legendary rock acts such as Guns n Roses and the Foo Fighters and in 1985 Sounds magazine even ranked them the second best band in the world! But despite the adulation, they never achieved the commercial success they deserved. In this interview Michael discusses his time in Hanoi, the death of drummer Razzle which tore their bright future apart, and about how old wounds are heeling with his former bandmate. He also talks about the brilliant new documentary being made about his life, his new aforementioned solo album, this summer touring with Guns n Roses and Alice Cooper, his friendship with 'Little' Steven van Zandt and Stiv Bators, finally getting to remaster an old Hanoi album and the re-release of Demolition 23. It's an extensive interview with Michael both bright, engaging and incredibly open and honest about what he's been through. Check out more of Vintage Rock Pod's brilliant interviews by following/subscribing to the Vintage Rock Pod feed on your favourite podcast app - a new interview is released every day and you can only get these on the VRP feed!
