There's some turmoil at the state capitol over something called historical horse racing, also called instant racing, where betters pick a horse in a digital horse race that has been run in the past. The state's horse racing tracks, Canterbury Park in Shakopee and Running Aces in Columbus, say historical horse racing is a critical revenue source for them. Lawyers for tribal nations in Minnesota say historical horse racing is too similar to slot machines, which tribes have exclusive rights to host in their casinos. DFL Representative Zack Stephenson is an author of a bill banning historical horse racing that had another hearing Monday morning. “I just want to be very clear with folks, there is no universe in which any bill that leaves this committee is going to authorize historical horse racing at the tracks,” he said. “That's a total nonstarter will not happen will not be part of a sports betting deal. Bright red line in the sand.”Stephenson is also the author of the larger sports betting bill making headlines right now. The latter will legalize sports betting, but with the tribal nations running the sports books. The CFO of Running Aces, Tracie Wilson, joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about the state of Minnesota race tracks and the debate in the legislature.

Sally Mixon, the founder of Abijah's on the Backside, has a passion for horses, horse racing, and mental health. With her Masters in Professional Counseling and certification in the ARCH framework, Sally has founded an organization that uses retired race horses to serve and help military, first responders and stable workers with trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. As a young woman, Sally struggled with severe anorexia; she went into rehab, hating every second of it, and moved to East Texas to work at a semi-locked-down facility for youth to run their horse program. It was through her work there, that her idea for Abjiah's was born. Growing up in Wisconsin, in a military family, Sally knows firsthand what it's like to be a part of a veteran and first responder community. In this episode, you will learn more about the vision and execution of Abijah on the Backside, hear stories of the impact this organization has had for veterans and first responders, how to access and utilize this organization's services, and more about Sally as a woman in a predominantly male dominated industry. This organization started at Canterbury Park of Minnesota and also has a non-profit subset through Horses for Mental Health. We all have mental health needs and how we address those needs can come in so many different ways, treatments, therapies, and communities. If you know someone who would benefit from Abijah's on the Backside or would like to donate to their non-profit organization, go to abijahs.com __ Katie Harms @ katie@katieharms.com, www.katieharms.com or Lisa Rubin @ lisa@wardrobeconsulting.net, www.wardrobeconsulting.net . If you're ever been to Canterbury Park, you probably didn't realize that horses racing there only compete for three to four years. If the horse was successful, has good bloodlines and breedable, they'll go on to produce new generations. Some will go on to a second career as a riding or show horse. But many others will end up in auction rings and sold for slaughter. There are various programs around the country, including at Minnesota's Canterbury Park, that try to find homes and new roles for retired racehorses. There's a brand new non-profit in Minnesota that pairs former racehorses with the same people who have taken care of them. It's called Abijah's, off track thoroughbreds for mental health. The mission is to address what's long been an issue in the stable area at racetracks across the country: stable hands who are dealing with addiction, mental health challenges and trauma. Sally Mixon has exercised racehorses for years and founded Abijah's. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about her work.

With the Twins potentially facing the same scenario as a bankruptcy judge prepares to hear arguments about their TV deal on Wednesday, we now have a real example to track and follow. 10:00: The Star Tribune's Rachel Blount joins Rand to talk about horse safety, what Canterbury Park is doing well and her upcoming story about the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown. 25:00: The Lynx and Twins were plagued by familiar problems on Tuesday, while a familiar name could soon be making big decisions for the Knicks.
