The controversy surrounding the Great American State Fair is heating up as more artists distance themselves from the event, including legendary performers who say they no longer want to be associated with the celebration. Is this a principled stand against politics, or another example of America's growing cultural divide?Tonight on The Arrington Gavin Show, we examine why artists like Martina McBride, Morris Day, Bret Michaels, and others have found themselves at the center of a national debate. Should entertainers use their platforms to make political statements, or should music remain separate from politics? And what does this latest controversy say about the state of free expression, patriotism, and public discourse in America? As an Independent, Arrington breaks down both sides of the argument and asks the tough questions: Are these artists standing on principle, bowing to pressure, or simply exercising their right to choose where they perform? And can Americans still come together for a celebration without politics getting in the way?
Welcome to "Travel to Listen," a new Unpacked series hosted by veteran music journalist Tim Chester. Over four episodes rolling out every other week, Tim takes us into the cities where music is more than entertainment—it's the shortcut to a place's soul. This week, he heads to Minneapolis to hear how a community center, a cold climate, and a once-in-a-generation genius combined to create one of the most distinctive sounds in American music, plus how the city is celebrating a decade since Prince's passing. In this episode How the Minneapolis sound emerged from the Great Migration, housing segregation, rock radio, and a community center called The Way, where a teenage Prince jammed alongside Morris Day and Terry Lewis Why Paul Peterson (dubbed St. Paul by Prince himself) believes the Minneapolis sound is joyous, funky, and built to last, and how his supergroup, the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, is carrying it forward The story of historian Kristen Zschomler: how grief over Prince's death led her to track 50+ locations across Minneapolis where he lived, worked, and recorded, and her ongoing mission to get them on the National Register of Historic Places What Prince mastered at his childhood home in North Minneapolis. Plus, why Sound 80, the studio where he cut his first demo tapes at 19, was the launchpad for everything that followed How to experience Minneapolis in 2026: from Paisley Park to First Avenue, Bunkers Music Bar to the Dakota, and the five-day Prince Celebration festival in June marking the 10th anniversary of Prince's death Meet this week's guests Paul Peterson is a musician, songwriter, and former Prince collaborator, dubbed "St. Paul" by the Purple One himself. He was a member of The Time and The Family, appeared in Purple Rain, and is now the leader of the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, an all-star alumni supergroup dedicated to keeping the Minneapolis sound alive. Kristen Zschomler is a historian and co-founder of the International Center 4 Prince Studies. She gives guided tours of Prince's Minneapolis and created Sound Around Tours, a self-guided audio tour app. She has researched and documented over 50 locations tied to Prince's life and work, and has successfully advocated for two of them to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Guest host Tim Chester is a freelance travel and culture writer who has spent the past 20 years exploring the world through the lens of music. His reporting has appeared in NME, Spin, and Afar, and his travels have taken him from Manhattan to Malawi and Beijing to Berlin in search of the festivals, scenes, and stories that reveal a city's soul. First Avenue—the venue Prince made famous in Purple Rain (he also recorded the song there, performing it live for the first time on that stage). Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, Morris Day, Young MC, and other artists have pulled out of the Freedom 250 concert series after saying they believed it was supposed to be a nonpartisan celebration of America's 250th birthday, not a Trump-linked political event. Who's left to play the party now, and what does it say when even nostalgia acts don't want to get dragged into the politics of 2026?
On today's show, Scoot talks about Vanilla Ice saying he'd perform for the Freedom 250 concert and shares stories about his encounters with David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs. Also, The White House's pressure campaign against critics keeps raising serious questions about free speech in America. In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, Martina McBride is one of many artists who have now canceled for President Trump's ‘Freedom 250' concert this summer. In part of an initiative planned by the Trump administration, fans took to social media to criticize the artists on the roster for performing. Morris Day, leader of the Time, announced that a performance by his funk ensemble was “a no for me,” and others soon followed suit, including William King of the Commodores and Young MC. Also Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Joan Baez, and more artists and activist are among the star-studded lineup for Tom Morello's Power to the People Festival this October Former first lady Jill Biden is now the target of ire among former Biden administration officials for her recent comments expressing the shock she said she had while watching her husband's now-infamous debate performance.
Dearly Beloved, We Are Gathered Here to Talk About Purple Rain Welcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast. Hosts Krissy Lenz (comedian and director at Neighborhood Comedy Theatre) and Nathan Blackwell (independent filmmaker at Squishy Studios) are joined this week by not one but two returning special guests—podcaster and writer Kyle Olson and podcast producer and improv impresario Pete Wright—to dig into one of the most electric, beguiling, and undeniably Prince films ever committed to celluloid: Purple Rain (1984).Neither Krissy nor Nathan had ever seen the movie before this episode—a confession that earns them some gentle ribbing from the two superfans across the table. What unfolds is a warm, funny, and genuinely insightful conversation about Prince as performer, The Kid as character, and what it means to watch a film that is less a story and more a time capsule from another world.

REMEMBERING JELLYBEAN JOHNSON (Morris Day and The Time drummer)1956 - 2025with Prologue by Zapp Band drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. and RICK FLYNNThis is a very special edition of the podcast RICK FLYNN PRESENTS as we celebrate the homegoing of one of the "Good Guys in Show Business," to say the very least,JELLYBEAN JOHNSON.As the drummer for THE TIME, Johnson worked alongside famed producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and recorded with and/or produced many notable artists including Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, New Edition, and Janet Jackson, with whom he had the 1990 No. 1 single, "Black Cat".Jellybean appeared in the PRINCE movies “Purple Rain” and Graffiti Bridge"Quote From Cincinnati DJ/Emcee RICK FLYNN on 11/25/2025:“I first met Jellybean Johnson in Cincinnati, Ohio during the PRINCE “Controversy Tour” in which I was an emcee. This tour featured the headliner PRINCE and, in the middle slot, was a Greater Cincinnati area band called “ZAPP FEATURING ROGER” and the then, largely unknown local Minneapolis band, known as MORRIS DAY and THE TIME which featured Jellybean Johnson on the drums. I was instantly impressed by the raw talent and showmanship of, not only Jellybean, but of the whole organization. This man was someone I was fortunate to have met and I have never forgotten the experience ever! The resulting popularity and huge success of THE TIME band to follow did not surprise me at all. They deserved it and I will forever miss “Bean” but I will never, ever forget the times I spent with him.” Thank-you MARTY for all you have done and my God bless you both!Thank-you to my brother and ZAPP BAND drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. for your gracious contribution to this memorial show. i hope you all enjoy it as we proudly remember and pay tribute to what I call "One of the Good Guys in Show Business"JELLYBEAN JOHNSON!
Episode 180: Jeffrey Paul and Sean Morton welcome back musician Andre Holmes of Morris Day & The Time for a fast-moving conversation about touring life, playing with legends, how he got into the band, the pressure of performing live every night, hilarious road stories, Prince's influence, and why Morris Day remains one of the greatest frontmen of all time.A tight, fun, insightful episode packed with music talk, laughs, and behind-the-scenes stories.
I remember the now late Jellybean Johnson who past away Nov 21st at the age of 69 years old. We know Jelly as the drummer of Morris Day & The Time and being an intrical part of that Minneapolis Funk Sound and an amazing human being.I yap for about 8 minutes then replay the interview from 2021 after the 10 bell salute. What a whirlwind of a week it's been! Eric G dives into the chaos after finally selling his house, and let me tell you, moving is about as fun as watching paint dry on a humid day. But hey, he managed to squeeze in a weekend joyride after all that madness, and spoiler alert: he got his hands on a 2014 Ford Raptor. Nothing says 'I just sold my house' like a truck that could probably tow a small mountain. Eric shares his excitement for revving up a new YouTube channel, where he plans to show off his lumber-hauling capabilities. After all, who doesn't want to see a guy in a badass truck trying to remember how to use a hammer? But it's not all trucks and good tunes from Morris Day and the Time—he's also got a keen eye on the shifting marketplace for home services! With HVAC companies buying up plumbers and electricians like they're Pokémon cards, Eric gives us the lowdown on how this could affect our future home improvement projects. Are you ready for the day when you might have to call an HVAC guy to fix your sink? Yeah, me neither. Prices are fluctuating like a rollercoaster, and Eric warns us to keep our eyes peeled for changes because your trusty plumber might just become your not-so-trusty HVAC technician. Let's not forget about the gas prices and how they're impacting the entire home improvement industry. Eric lays it down that as gas prices dip, the cost of materials might just follow suit. So, if you're looking to tackle that home project you've pushed to the back burner, good news might be on the horizon. But, as always, he emphasizes the importance of staying informed. With a new tax looming and government shutdown affecting rebates, Eric reminds us that the world of home improvement is anything but dull. So, buckle up—this episode is a wild ride through personal anecdotes and market insights, and trust me, you don't want to miss it!Takeaways: Eric G just closed a major chapter in life by selling his house, and wow, what a relief! The marketplace is getting spicy, especially with HVAC companies gobbling up plumbers and electricians like they're on a shopping spree. Gas prices are doing a little cha-cha, and while some areas see drops, others are still feeling the pinch. If you think your favorite plumbing company vanished, it might just be the HVAC takeover - stay alert! Panasonic is venturing into the Bluetooth game with bathroom fans, because regular ventilation was so last season. This week's DMV story? We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. ABOUT JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWISWith 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits and 16 Billboard #1 pop hits to their credit, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are perhaps the most influential and successful songwriting and production duo in modern music history. With a total of 41 Top 10 hits in the US, Jimmy and Terry were named ASCAP Songwriters of the Year a record-breaking nine times. They are perhaps best known for their work with Janet Jackson, beginning with the Control album, which earned the duo a Grammy for Producer of the Year. Between 1986 and 1994 they scored thirteen #1 songs with Janet on either the R&B or pop chart, including “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control,” “Let's Wait Awhile,” “Miss You Much,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Escapade” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Any Time, Any Place,” and “Again,” which earned Jimmy, Terry, and Janet an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Jimmy and Terry got their start as musicians with Morris Day and the Time, the Prince-produced band whose biggest hit was the Jam and Lewis-penned “Jerk Out.” They made the transition to a successful songwriting and production team working with the S.O.S. band, which landed a #2 R&B hit with “Just Be Good to Me.” From there, they made their mark on pop and R&B hits for decades to come. In addition to their work with Jackson, the duo wrote and produced the #1 pop singles “Human” by Human League, “Romantic” by Karyn White, “Thank God I Found You” by Mariah Carey, and the Boyz II Men singles “On Bended Knee” and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.” Additional R&B chart toppers include “Encore” by Cheryl Lynn, “Fake” by Alexander O'Neal, “Everything I Miss at Home” by Cherelle, “Sensitivity” by Ralph Tresvant, and the Johnny Gill singles “Rub You the Right Way” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” Other highlights from their catalog include New Edition's “If It Isn't Love” and “I'm Still in Love With You,” “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige, Robert Palmer's hit pop cover of their Cherelle single “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” and recordings by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Usher, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Sting, Elton John, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, and many others.Always versatile, the duo has earned Grammy awards for Best R&B Album for Chaka Kahn's Funk This, Best Gospel Song for Yolanda Adams' “Be Blessed,” and Best Dance Recording for Janet Jackson's #1 pop and R&B hit “All For You.” Additional Jackson hits that were written and produced with Jam and Lewis include the Janet and Michael Jackson hit “Scream” and the #1 singles “Together Again,” “I Get Lonely,” “Doesn't Really Matter,” and the Nelly duet “Call On Me.”In total the team has earned over 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond album certifications from the RIAA, have received more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, earned the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Dan Woike joins us from Minneapolis as the Lakers get set to face the T-Wolves in Game 3 tonight. Somehow a conversation about Morris Day and The Time turns into a discussion about corporal punishment. The Dodgers think they're closing to finding out why so many of their pitchers have had arm injuries in recent years.
Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.
The Black History Month Marathon ain't over! Thanks to Markellus from So Wizard Podcast, the three of us finally get to check off a big one. Yes folks, none of us had ever watched Purple Rain before this but we were all familiar with that album. Chris has been dreading this day, but Anita and I were looking forward to it. We review each song as it comes up, Anita gets mad at some hand gestures I made during a certain scene, Chris surprises us both, Anita has thoughts about Prince's kissing style, and I do my best rendition of "Gigolo's get Lonely Too" by Morris Day and The Time. We hope you enjoy the show, we enjoyed recording it! Arnetia Walker has lit up stages and screens for decades and she joins us this week to review her stunning show biz resume, including her latest entry, Bookie, the Chuck Lorre Max comedy on which she is currently slaying as Grandma. We are also joined by artist and Holocaust Survivor Erika Kahn, a first-hand witness to the consequences of authoritarian rule, scapegoating, and nationally sanctioned brutality. Erika offers vital insight for us in our fight against a dangerous wave of fascism.Orphaned as a child, Arnetia Walker's showbiz career began at New York City's High School for the Performing Arts where her talent and dreams were nurtured and encouraged. Arnetia was embraced by a similar culture of community and support when she won her first Broadway role with Hal Linden in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and then A Raisin in the Sun. Both Lorraine Hansberry's plays. With a favorable alignment of the stars and talent recognition from Michael Bennet, Arnetia went from understudying Stephanie Mills in The Wiz to co-starring in Dreamgirls… a show within which she ultimately played every starring character. (But not on the same night.) As gifted an actor as she is a singer, Arnetia talks about her slew of TV appearances, including her lead role in the Witt Thomas Harris sitcom, Nurses and the circumstances under which that part prevented her from being cast in E.R.Currently, she is stealing every scene as the ruthlessly direct Grandma in Bookie. Arnetia shares what it's like to work with Chuck Lorre and Sebastian Maniscalco. She tells us about her cabaret era and her passion for cooking and she boldly takes on a round of IMDB Roulette that jars some treasured TV memories! Then, Centenarian Erika Kahn recalls her childhood in Nazi Germany, and she contrasts and compares the climate which led to the Nazi atrocities with that of our current perilous pivot point in America. Erika is a tenacious activist whose words of hope and optimism are essential for those of us taking on the rise of American fascism. In recommendations --Fritz: Netflix Series 'American Manhunt: OJ Simpson'Weezy: The Movie 'Studio One Forever' (2023), streaming on several platforms Path Points of Interest:Arnetia WalkerArnetia Walker on IMDBArnetia Walker on WikipediaArnetia Walker on TiktokBookieErika KahnWe Played Marbles: Remembering A Stolen ChildhoodA documentary featuring Erika KahnAmerican Manhunt: O.J. Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
In today's episode of the podcast I talk with the very talented (and highly accomplished), multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter -St. Paul Petterson. Among the huge list of St. Paul's credits you will see some massive 'superstar' type names like - Morris Day, Darryl Hall, George Benson, The Corrs and Peter Frampton, but the thing that needs to be brought to your attention (at least in my opinion), is the fact that at only 17 years old, Paul was hand picked by the (now late, but always great) Prince to join 'The Time' for the Purple Rain movie. This of course led to many work related affiliations with Prince before St. Paul eventually became a successful singer and songwriter in his own right with labels like MCA and Atlantic. Paul also has his own podcast (with a similar theme to this one) entitled 'Music On The Run, which I strongly encourage you to check out. For further information on Paul, The Mpls Funk All Stars or any of his related projects, please visit www.paulpeterson.com or www.mplsfunkallstars.com For all things Travis Marc or Musicians-Mentor related please visit - www.musicians-mentor.com Also, don't forget to check out our affiliate partnership with the lovely folks over at Soundbrenner by visiting - https://www.soundbrenner.com/pages/affiliate-travis-marc
