We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. ABOUT JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWISWith 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits and 16 Billboard #1 pop hits to their credit, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are perhaps the most influential and successful songwriting and production duo in modern music history. With a total of 41 Top 10 hits in the US, Jimmy and Terry were named ASCAP Songwriters of the Year a record-breaking nine times. They are perhaps best known for their work with Janet Jackson, beginning with the Control album, which earned the duo a Grammy for Producer of the Year. Between 1986 and 1994 they scored thirteen #1 songs with Janet on either the R&B or pop chart, including “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control,” “Let's Wait Awhile,” “Miss You Much,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Escapade” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Any Time, Any Place,” and “Again,” which earned Jimmy, Terry, and Janet an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Jimmy and Terry got their start as musicians with Morris Day and the Time, the Prince-produced band whose biggest hit was the Jam and Lewis-penned “Jerk Out.” They made the transition to a successful songwriting and production team working with the S.O.S. band, which landed a #2 R&B hit with “Just Be Good to Me.” From there, they made their mark on pop and R&B hits for decades to come. In addition to their work with Jackson, the duo wrote and produced the #1 pop singles “Human” by Human League, “Romantic” by Karyn White, “Thank God I Found You” by Mariah Carey, and the Boyz II Men singles “On Bended Knee” and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.” Additional R&B chart toppers include “Encore” by Cheryl Lynn, “Fake” by Alexander O'Neal, “Everything I Miss at Home” by Cherelle, “Sensitivity” by Ralph Tresvant, and the Johnny Gill singles “Rub You the Right Way” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” Other highlights from their catalog include New Edition's “If It Isn't Love” and “I'm Still in Love With You,” “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige, Robert Palmer's hit pop cover of their Cherelle single “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” and recordings by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Usher, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Sting, Elton John, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, and many others.Always versatile, the duo has earned Grammy awards for Best R&B Album for Chaka Kahn's Funk This, Best Gospel Song for Yolanda Adams' “Be Blessed,” and Best Dance Recording for Janet Jackson's #1 pop and R&B hit “All For You.” Additional Jackson hits that were written and produced with Jam and Lewis include the Janet and Michael Jackson hit “Scream” and the #1 singles “Together Again,” “I Get Lonely,” “Doesn't Really Matter,” and the Nelly duet “Call On Me.”In total the team has earned over 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond album certifications from the RIAA, have received more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, earned the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Dan Woike joins us from Minneapolis as the Lakers get set to face the T-Wolves in Game 3 tonight. Somehow a conversation about Morris Day and The Time turns into a discussion about corporal punishment. The Dodgers think they're closing to finding out why so many of their pitchers have had arm injuries in recent years.

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.
The Black History Month Marathon ain't over! Thanks to Markellus from So Wizard Podcast, the three of us finally get to check off a big one. Yes folks, none of us had ever watched Purple Rain before this but we were all familiar with that album. Chris has been dreading this day, but Anita and I were looking forward to it. We review each song as it comes up, Anita gets mad at some hand gestures I made during a certain scene, Chris surprises us both, Anita has thoughts about Prince's kissing style, and I do my best rendition of "Gigolo's get Lonely Too" by Morris Day and The Time. We hope you enjoy the show, we enjoyed recording it! Arnetia Walker has lit up stages and screens for decades and she joins us this week to review her stunning show biz resume, including her latest entry, Bookie, the Chuck Lorre Max comedy on which she is currently slaying as Grandma. We are also joined by artist and Holocaust Survivor Erika Kahn, a first-hand witness to the consequences of authoritarian rule, scapegoating, and nationally sanctioned brutality. Erika offers vital insight for us in our fight against a dangerous wave of fascism.Orphaned as a child, Arnetia Walker's showbiz career began at New York City's High School for the Performing Arts where her talent and dreams were nurtured and encouraged. Arnetia was embraced by a similar culture of community and support when she won her first Broadway role with Hal Linden in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and then A Raisin in the Sun. Both Lorraine Hansberry's plays. With a favorable alignment of the stars and talent recognition from Michael Bennet, Arnetia went from understudying Stephanie Mills in The Wiz to co-starring in Dreamgirls… a show within which she ultimately played every starring character. (But not on the same night.) As gifted an actor as she is a singer, Arnetia talks about her slew of TV appearances, including her lead role in the Witt Thomas Harris sitcom, Nurses and the circumstances under which that part prevented her from being cast in E.R.Currently, she is stealing every scene as the ruthlessly direct Grandma in Bookie. Arnetia shares what it's like to work with Chuck Lorre and Sebastian Maniscalco. She tells us about her cabaret era and her passion for cooking and she boldly takes on a round of IMDB Roulette that jars some treasured TV memories! Then, Centenarian Erika Kahn recalls her childhood in Nazi Germany, and she contrasts and compares the climate which led to the Nazi atrocities with that of our current perilous pivot point in America. Erika is a tenacious activist whose words of hope and optimism are essential for those of us taking on the rise of American fascism. In recommendations --Fritz: Netflix Series 'American Manhunt: OJ Simpson'Weezy: The Movie 'Studio One Forever' (2023), streaming on several platforms Path Points of Interest:Arnetia WalkerArnetia Walker on IMDBArnetia Walker on WikipediaArnetia Walker on TiktokBookieErika KahnWe Played Marbles: Remembering A Stolen ChildhoodA documentary featuring Erika KahnAmerican Manhunt: O.J. Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
In today's episode of the podcast I talk with the very talented (and highly accomplished), multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter -St. Paul Petterson. Among the huge list of St. Paul's credits you will see some massive 'superstar' type names like - Morris Day, Darryl Hall, George Benson, The Corrs and Peter Frampton, but the thing that needs to be brought to your attention (at least in my opinion), is the fact that at only 17 years old, Paul was hand picked by the (now late, but always great) Prince to join 'The Time' for the Purple Rain movie. This of course led to many work related affiliations with Prince before St. Paul eventually became a successful singer and songwriter in his own right with labels like MCA and Atlantic. Paul also has his own podcast (with a similar theme to this one) entitled 'Music On The Run, which I strongly encourage you to check out. They'll marvel over the Nietszchean force of will Prince manifested to force this thing off the ground, dive into the depressing original draft of the movie once titled 'Dreams,' spotlight the man at the front of the Time, Mr. Morris Day, and drill down into the precise manufacturing specs of Prince's iconic guitar and motorcycle. FLW Special - Purple Rain at 40 In this very special episode, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the film “Purple Rain”. The overwhelming success of the movie made Prince the first artist in history to have the same project simultaneously #1 on the singles, albums, and movie charts in the United States. We speak to one of the foremost Prince experts; author and podcaster Alan Light. Alan talks about the creation of Purple Rain the song, the album and the movie. He also reveals… How the version of the title track that we're all familiar with was recorded in one take at a fundraiser. It was also the first time that 19-year-old Wendy Melvoin had played with the band. Movie executives didn't want to cast Prince in the lead role, and suggested much more famous star (who would have been badly miscast!) How Prince tried to recruit Stevie Nicks to help with the lyrics for “Purple Rain” - and why she said no. How the movie has held up well (for its live performances) and been held up to ridicule (for its acting performances and misogyny). Prince's tenuous relationship with Morris Day & The Time – and his greatest musical regret. Alan Light is the prolific author of many music biographies, including his books about Tupac Shakur, Nina Simone and The Beastie Boys. He also collaborated on “My Cross To Bear”, the Gregg Allman autobiography and Peter Frampton's “Do You Feel Like I Do”. Other books include “The Holy Or The Broken” – a great history of the Leonard Cohen masterpiece “Hallelujah”; and of course, “Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the making of Purple Rain”. Alan is also the co-host of the “Sound Up” podcast with his good friend Marc Goodman.
We sit down with the legendary guitarist Jesse Johnsons to discuss his time with Prince, Morris Day and The Time, D'Angelo, and new music. Tons of stories and guitar riffs.
Two Hour Reqquest Hourposted by Fugman, narrated by GuyWelcome To Steamy Stories Podcastby Fugman's, Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. Many years ago I used to be a radio DJ, a job I truly loved for many different reasons. First, I worked overnights on the weekend, so other than the DJ that worked at the other station in the building, there was no one ever around. I would invite my girlfriend and she would hang out with me pretty much my whole shift.I had an airshift one year around my birthday, and I invited Stacy to hang with me during my shift.I worked from twelve am to 6am, and she came by about half an hour into my shift wearing my favorite little black dress that shoed my two favorite things, cleavage and her long legs. She usually stayed until I left for the night, so I figured she had something in mind.In the center of the room there is a big desk with an audio board and a microphone where I sit and do my show. On the other side a couple more microphones and chairs for the morning show. I sat behind this huge desk and Stacy sat behind me for the most part, she was my helper. She would help me get the music for my show.We would get to talking and then I would put my headphones on, flip the microphone on and talk to all the listeners. Stacy used to enjoy listening to the calls from all of the lonely people. Beginning at two o'clock, I did the “two hour request hour” an all request show, lots of callers, lots of requests. It's my busiest time of the Friday night show.I started taking calls around 1:30am, and by 2, I had enough requests and dedications to have most of the first hour planned out. It was a popular show, and it was nice to have Stacy's help.Right as the clock turned 2, I started my show, Stacy told me that she would be right back. I said ok, and started the “Two Hour Request Hour.” My phone's were hot and I was going good, answering phones and getting things ready. Other than answering the phones, I don't do a lot of live mic work during this time, it's all recorded phone calls. When Stacy came back in the room, I was recording a call, I caught her eye, and she winked at me. She disappeared and a second later, I felt her hands on my thighs. Her hands stroked me through my jeans, and my member came to attention under her fingertips. I looked at her under the desk, as she smiled her approval of my condition. Deftly, she undib my belt and unbuttoned my jeans, slowly lowering my zipper. Her hands pulled at my jeans until I lifted my butt of the chair so she could pull them down. She grabbed at my underwear in the process and suddenly, my hard tool was naked in front of her.She smiled at me, “don't forget you have a show to do, go ahead, answer your phones!”I tried to compose myself and answered a call, “Hi, this is John, can I send a song to Alice?'Just as I was about to reply, Stacy kissed my rod and slid me deep inside of her mouth. I tried to stay calm and responded, but I about stumbled over simple words, “sure, what do you want to say to her?”Stacy was slowly sliding me in and out of her lips, I looked at her, and she let me go only long enough to smile at me and softly say, “can't you talk?” She winked and I watched as her lips parted and she slowly took my length down her throat.John continued, “I want to tell her that she is my world, and can you play ‘The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You' by Bryan Adams?”I mustered my thoughts, “Sure, will do, thanks for calling.” I hung up the phone and looked at Stacy bobbing slowly up and down in my lap.“Un-uh mister, don't neglect those phones” as she dropped on me again and again. It was difficult to work like this, but I am a professional, trained to deal with distractions and stay on task. I answered the next call, “Can you play ‘Fishnet,' by Morris Day and send it out to Sam from Jessica?”I managed to get out, “Sure, I can…” as I continued, Stacy wrapped her hands around the base of my very happy erection and stroked me, “do that!” As I said that, my voice cracked like a twelve year old.I thanked my caller and hung up, Stacy removed my tool from her lips and stroked me, she flashed me a wicked grin “what's the matter?”I tried to reply, “nothing,” but as I started, she wrapped her lips around my head and forcefully sucked on me like she was trying to get my cream out through my fleshy straw. My voice cracked. And my words faded as my head fell backwards.I took a moment to enjoy the sensations that her tongue sliding around the head were giving me. Then I answered the next call…“can you play….” The caller faded out as my girlfriend upped her game, and was stroking me, sucking on my head until my body uncontrollably pushed forward and I grabbed her head.I was able to respond to my caller, “yeah, I can do that,” but I don't really remember, or truth be told, care what they wanted to hear.Stacy's hand was tickling my testicles as she slid my hardness deep into her throat. Up and down, her head bobbed, as she started to make noises, vibrations travelled down my erection and I was fighting the urge to fire my seed.I answered the next caller, “Hi, can you play….” Once again Stacy was trying to get me to go over the edge, “and send it out to…” Stacy grabbed me tightly as I fired deep into her throat.“Oh yes, I can do that,” I said and hung up the phone as my hand grabbed Stacy's head and held her as my stuff flooded her mouth. “Oh my god yes,” I moaned as she gobbled up every last drop. She slowly loosened up her grip on my testicles and more semen shot into her mouth. She sucked on me until the last drop exited my body. She let me slip out from between my lips, smiling and wiping her lips for any lost drops of me.She came out from underneath the desk and smiled a wicked smile, “Happy Birthday baby!”I pulled my pants back up and put away my softening, recently spent tool, and fastened my pants. I had to go back and listen to the recorded phone calls, just so I could actually hear what song they wanted played. And the one call, the one where I exploded down Stacy's throat, you can hear me grunt at the exact second I shot.Stacy laughed at me, “you need to save that call, that's definitely a keeper.” I agreed.I finished the rest of my shift and we went home to get Stacy out of that little black dress that I like so much. Two Hour Reqquest Hourposted by Fugman, narrated by GuyWelcome To Steamy Stories Podcast by Fugman's, Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. Many years ago I used to be a radio DJ, a job I truly loved for many different reasons. First, I worked overnights on the weekend, so other than the DJ that worked at the other station in the building, there was no one ever around. I would invite my girlfriend and she would hang out with me pretty much my whole shift. I had an airshift one year around my birthday, and I invited Stacy to hang with me during my shift. [[MORE]] I worked from twelve am to 6am, and she came by about half an hour into my shift wearing my favorite little black dress that shoed my two favorite things, cleavage and her long legs. She usually stayed until I left for the night, so I figured she had something in mind. In the center of the room there is a big desk with an audio board and a microphone where I sit and do my show. On the other side a couple more microphones and chairs for the morning show. I sat behind this huge desk and Stacy sat behind me for the most part, she was my helper. She would help me get the music for my show. We would get to talking and then I would put my headphones on, flip the microphone on and talk to all the listeners. Stacy used to enjoy listening to the calls from all of the lonely people. Beginning at two o'clock, I did the “two hour request hour” an all request show, lots of callers, lots of requests. It's my busiest time of the Friday night show. I started taking calls around 1:30am, and by 2, I had enough requests and dedications to have most of the first hour planned out. It was a popular show, and it was nice to have Stacy's help. Right as the clock turned 2, I started my show, Stacy told me that she would be right back. She grabbed at my underwear in the process and suddenly, my hard tool was naked in front of her. She smiled at me, “don't forget you have a show to do, go ahead, answer your phones!” I tried to compose myself and answered a call, “Hi, this is John, can I send a song to Alice?' Just as I was about to reply, Stacy kissed my rod and slid me deep inside of her mouth. I tried to stay calm and responded, but I about stumbled over simple words, “sure, what do you want to say to her?” Stacy was slowly sliding me in and out of her lips, I looked at her, and she let me go only long enough to smile at me and softly say, “can't you talk?” She winked and I watched as her lips parted and she slowly took my length down her throat. John continued, “I want to tell her that she is my world, and can you play ‘The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You' by Bryan Adams?” I mustered my thoughts, “Sure, will do, thanks for calling.” I hung up the phone and looked at Stacy bobbing slowly up and down in my lap. “Un-uh mister, don't neglect those phones” as she dropped on me again and again. It was difficult to work like this, but I am a professional, trained to deal with distractions and stay on task. I answered the next call, “Can you play ‘Fishnet,' by Morris Day and send it out to Sam from Jessica?” I managed to get out, “Sure, I can…” as I continued, Stacy wrapped her hands around the base of my very happy erection and stroked me, “do that!” As I said that, my voice cracked like a twelve year old. I thanked my caller and hung up, Stacy removed my tool from her lips and stroked me, she flashed me a wicked grin “what's the matter?” I tried to reply, “nothing,” but as I started, she wrapped her lips around my head and forcefully sucked on me like she was trying to get my cream out through my fleshy straw. My voice cracked. And my words faded as my head fell backwards. I took a moment to enjoy the sensations that her tongue sliding around the head were giving me. Then I answered the next call…“can you play….” The caller faded out as my girlfriend upped her game, and was stroking me, sucking on my head until my body uncontrollably pushed forward and I grabbed her head. I was able to respond to my caller, “yeah, I can do that,” but I don't really remember, or truth be told, care what they wanted to hear. Stacy's hand was tickling my testicles as she slid my hardness deep into her throat. Up and down, her head bobbed, as she started to make noises, vibrations travelled down my erection and I was fighting the urge to fire my seed. I answered the next caller, “Hi, can you play….” Once again Stacy was trying to get me to go over the edge, “and send it out to…” Stacy grabbed me tightly as I fired deep into her throat. “Oh yes, I can do that,” I said and hung up the phone as my hand grabbed Stacy's head and held her as my stuff flooded her mouth. “Oh my god yes,” I moaned as she gobbled up every last drop. She slowly loosened up her grip on my testicles and more semen shot into her mouth. She sucked on me until the last drop exited my body. She let me slip out from between my lips, smiling and wiping her lips for any lost drops of me. She came out from underneath the desk and smiled a wicked smile, “Happy Birthday baby!” I pulled my pants back up and put away my softening, recently spent tool, and fastened my pants. I had to go back and listen to the recorded phone calls, just so I could actually hear what song they wanted played. And the one call, the one where I exploded down Stacy's throat, you can hear me grunt at the exact second I shot. We sit down with St. Paul Peterson and Jerry Hubbard to discuss the 40th anniversary of The Time's Ice Cream Castle and share TONS of stories. We discuss how they were brought in to replace Monte Moir, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who had just been fired from The Time by Prince. We reflect on the insanity of it all as Paul Peterson, Jerry Hubbard and Mark Cardenas were thrust into the spotlight to share the stage with Morris Day, Jesse Johnson, Jerome Benton, and Jellybean to complete the lineup. We'll discuss the shooting of Purple Rain, the album cover for Ice Cream Castle, and so many new purple stories as we look back at 40 years passed.
Mr. Christopher sits down with Mark Cardenas from the Ice Cream Castle era of Morris Day and The Time. Mark was brought in with Paul Peterson, and Rocky Harris (who would be replaced by Jerry Hubbard) to take the place of Monte Moir, and also Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who got trapped in an Atlanta snow storm and missed a show. The new members found themselves at the center of the Purple Rain movie and The Time's biggest album Ice Cream Castle and here's Mark's story of how it all went down.

Nashville's pre-eminent film critic, connoisseur & Prince devotee Jason Shawhan returns to Movie Club as we talk Prince's 2nd film UNDER THE CHERRY MOON. We get into Prince's ever-practical wardrobe choices, Jerome Benton's woefully short film career, the rather progressive queerness of the film, “Martin Scorsese's Pee Wee's Big Adventure”, Wendy & Lisa, The Linn LM-1 drum machine, Prince's proteges, Michael Ballhaus, smuggling pimento cheese across state lines, why this is Prince's finest film, Morris Day & The Time, the sheer awfulness of Graffiti Bridge, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Siskel & Ebert missing the point and our own mistakes of believing the received wisdom on this film - thus avoiding it - in younger days. Forty years ago this summer, we saw the release of this seminal biopic/concert movie from first-time director Albert Magnoli. It was the feature film debut of Prince who was a rising rock and pop phenomenon at the time and it featured wall-to-wall new songs from Prince and his band at the time, The Revolution. Both the film and its soundtrack became instant phenomenons launching the late, great Prince Rogers Nelson into the stratosphere of all-time musical legends! The story is only loosely based on his life and it focuses on the The Kid (Prince) who leads an aspiring rock band in Minneapolis and is struggling with both a brutal homelife (he lives with his abusive father played by Clarence Williams III) and just finding his voice as an artist. Also co-starring are Apollonia Kotero as the woman he falls for and Morris Day as his chief musical rival. Is it possible - merely possible - that Ringo Starr's 1973 album, “Ringo” is the best solo Beatles album of that incredible year of classic solo Beatles albums? And while we're at it, does Ringo's 1978 entry “Bad Boy” still run circles - from a sheer rock & roll perspective - around the flaccid, weak-ass “Some Girls”? To be discussed on our final episode, stay tuned! Because, today's episode is dedicated to 50 years of the closest thing to a Beatles reunion album this side of the Threetles, and maybe even The Ladders. Tony and T.J., with a little help from our friends, Producer Casey and P3Z-Nutz, deep dish Side 1 of the greatest album (sorry, Liverpool 8) from the greatest drummer (sorry, Andy White) of the greatest band (sorry, Korn) of all time. And they also find (Morris Day and the) time to ask:

“Her voice is the voice of the fountain of youth and her musical spirit lets you drink -- from her voice, from her dance, from her spirit. And Jenny Burton becomes Isis incarnate.” ~Laurence Holder, Routes Magazine Jenny Burton had a long and varied career as a superb vocalist working successfully in Dance Music, R&B, Gospel and Inspirational Music. In the late 80s and early 90s Burton had four national number one R&B/Dance hits -- "One More Shot," rose to Billboard's number five slot and led to Burton's first major-label solo deal. Atlantic Records released her first LP, "In Black & White," which included the hit single, “I Remember What You Like". “Bad Habits,” off her second album was a #1 dance hit in America and rose to #12 on the R&B charts. She has to her credits as well two gold records from films -- Harry Belafonte's Beat Street and White Nights starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Moving more into an Inspirational direction, she created with producer/composer Peter Link, The Jenny Burton Experience, an award winning Inspirational group ran for seven years to sold out standing room only audiences at New York City's "Don't Tell Mama". The Jenny Burton Experience also opened at Trump Marina for Al Green, performed with The Gap Band and Morris Day and The Times at The Indianapolis Black Expo for 80,000 people, opened for Stevie Wonder at Lincoln Center in NYC, and completed a one month run headlining at Resorts International in Atlantic City, the first Gospel group to ever headline in Atlantic City. Then she went away for 17 years and worked on Wall Street.
Stereogum's Tom Breihan returns to Pop Pantheon to dissect the career of pop history's greatest mimic, Bruno Mars. Louie and Tom dive into how Bruno spent his childhood impersonating greats like Elvis and Michael Jackson, his failed start on Motown and early work for other artists, including via his production group The Smeezingtons. Then they discuss his tightly-stitched 2010 debut, Doo-Wops and Hooligans, 2012's pop history grab-bag, Unorthodox Jukebox, and the cultural sensation of his 2014 Mark Ronson-collab, the Morris Day-tributing “Uptown Funk.” Next, they explore Bruno's tour through Black pop and soul history on 2016's 24K Magic and his Philly Soul and Parliament-Funkadelic-homaging super-duo with Anderson .Paak., Silk Sonic, as they parse whether Bruno is central to his music at all or simply a nostalgia curator. In today's deep dive, we’ll hear a conversation with Morris Day about his career, his legacy and his upcoming performance at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
Les, Kurt, and Jason have decided to stop promoting Hallmark and Lifetime movies when there's a strike, and instead focus on pop culture's unusual past, and this week it comes in the form of a 1988 pilot starring Morris Day! But first, Jason strongly objects to Les' “funny idea” that someone be murdered at/near one of his parties. Plus, Kurt's Blac Chyna news lets us all know that tattoo removal hurts, and we learn the Celebrity net Worth of Robin Givens and Pauly Shore! Then, it's talk to talk about Heart and Soul starring Morris Day, Tisha Campbell, and James Avery, but NOT Will Smith. But at least there's Barry Sobel and his very popular act (yet wildly offensive). What COULD have been a great fish out of water story instead turns out to be the leading to a movie about Ted Bundy not starring Redd Foxx. What does this week's episode have in common with Cher, Cyndi Lauper, the Reverend Al Green, French novelist Marcel Proust, and the ever-amazing Sir Huey Lewis? Well, other than all them having a Bacon Number of 2 (the number of steps that it takes to connect all of them to actor Kevin Bacon, per the website the Oracle of Bacon … yeah, real thing that exists) … they all know a quintessential truth about life, the universe and everything - time, and how we use it, is vitally important. In this week's Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith take a deep dive into a topic even the great Morris Day could never master - Time Management (save Jerome, of course - Morris and Jerome - BFF OGs). More than any other resource that you and your business have to have, time is finite and has to be treated like the rare and precious commodity it is because none of us have the ability to get it back once it is gone (barring someone owning a DeLorean with a functioning flux capacitor, the Doctor's Tardis, a time turner, a rundown Colorado ski chalet hot tub short-circuited by a bootleg Soviet Bloc energy drink or some other sort of time travel device). Our boys will take you through the tips, tricks and teachings they've taken in throughout their tour of life - predetermining priorities, getting real with realistic goals, defusing distractions… just to name a few, with their own astute anecdotes and intelligent insights. (Yes, even Keith … we're just as shocked as you are, dear listeners.) So, after this week's episode, you may not be able to turn back time, but you'll be a damn sight better at making sure that time … is on your side, yes, it is…
On this very special edition of Not A Bomb, the guys celebrate 150 episodes of the podcast with a double feature starring the one, the only - Andrew Dice Clay. First up is the 1990's action comedy mystery film, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Here, we find the Diceman starring as the ”The Rock N' Roll Detective” who gets into all the hottest clubs and dates all the hottest women while solving cases within the music industry. Critically panned and a financial flop, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane failed to capitalize on the success of Andrew Dice Clay who had just broken attendance records that same year at Madison Square Garden. If that wasn't enough, the guys tackle 1993's romantic comedy (?), Brainsmasher…A Love Story. Let's see, this one has Teri Hatcher, goofy ninjas who aren't really ninjas, and a lot of similar plot points found in Ford Fairlane.
