Christina Dorett joins Connecting Communities to discuss the work of the service group KUDOS. They are seeking volunteers to join them to bridge the gap between neighborhoods that have been impacted by systemic racism. Their group seeks to connect communities in a literal sense, by bringing people together who might never meet otherwise. Christina is very frank about the goal of finding a way to do anti-racism work (as opposed to only reading or discussing it), as well as the challenges and benefits of coordinating a volunteer day of service. Today's episode draws on the work of an extraordinary American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who sacrificed so much on behalf of so many. Our hosts discuss Baker Donelson's first annual firmwide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service as well as the impact of serving others.Baker Donelson's Day of Service, which was on January 15, 2024, was a day-on rather than simply a day-off. Various individuals across the firm planned opportunities for everyone in the firm and their families to give back to their communities through service projects. We encouraged everyone to participate in the in-person activities or to reflect on Dr. King's legacy and create their own unique ways to learn and serve. After listening to some personal stories, we hope you feel inspired to get creative in how you choose to serve and also reflect on Dr. King's legacy of service and how this legacy can be advanced daily to create more inclusive climates. We each have a role to play in uplifting our communities and those in need! Our Hosts this Week:Clint Crosby, Shareholder, Baker DonelsonNakimuli Davis-Primer, Shareholder, Baker DonelsonAaliyah Locke, Associate, Baker DonelsonDo you have a topic or idea that you would like to hear more about? In August of 1956, during the Montgomery bus boycott, Dr. King addressed a gathering celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity in Buffalo, NY. His speech came to be known as his “Birth of a New Age” address. In it, he said, “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” Today, on this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Tom interviews people for whom every day is a day of service. Their deep seeded passions are centered, as Dr. King said, in the broader concerns of humanity. Guests profiled today include: Matt Hanna, Executive Director of Next One Up Drs. Barbara Cook and Shakera Rahimi who assist Afghan refugee families Rev. Opening of New Performing Arts Center Coincides With Commemoration of The Events of September 11th Every year, the week of September 11th is a week of commemoration. New York is filled with stories of this day — stories of loss, of bravery, of sacrifice, of reunion. But perhaps most visible, the physical World Trade Center, yes a place of reflection and commemoration, is also piece by piece becoming a place that has been rebuilt in the spirit of American persistence. The WTC, operated by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, has announced the opening of its new performing arts center, as reported by AP. “The memorial is here for people to come and grieve and pay their respects. The museum is for people to learn, be aware and never forget,” says Khady Kamara, PAC NYC's executive director. “And the Performing Arts Center is here for people to celebrate life and really celebrate the resilience of New Yorkers and of the country.” The opening comes at a time when arts have struggled in the City, and could provide a meaningful jolt to the creative ingenuity that in many ways defines what makes New York great. Other efforts to turn tragedy into action and resilience are highlighted by the work of nonprofits like 9/11 Day, which encourages folks do good deeds each year. It has become the largest day of service in the United States. WWII Marine Veteran and Navajo Code Talker Peter MacDonald reflects on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, and at the same time points out that Dr. King would not simply want a day of service, but a way of service. As one of the only three living Code Talkers of more than 400 from WWII, Mr. MacDonald embodies grace and gratitude, and teaches us that although these codes may have been used as weapons, war is never the goal. His ongoing wish is for peace, balance and being one together with the world among all cultures – With one Navajo word that sums this up, and what Dr. King was all about: Hozho. Thank you for joining this conversation with Marine Veteran and Navajo Code Talker Peter MacDonald, and wishing you all to be in Hozho not only on this day of service, but everyday.Special thanks to Charity MacDonald for making this conversation with your Dad possible. All Local Morning for 09/12/22
Welcome to September 11th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we remember the events from two decades ago and hold to the ties that bind us. Anyone who remembers 911 can recall the intense emotions of an event that united us in tragedy. As we reflect on that day from the distance of more than two decades, we pay our respects to the fallen, along with the families who were forever changed. We also remember the heroism of the first responders and countless volunteers who helped us all overcome the fear of that day. While 911 is referred to as Patriot Day, it is also known as National Day of Service and Remembrance. May we strive to find hope in our common ground and promote acts of unity no matter how small. When we think of our great Nation, the threads that tie us all together could be called Americana. Since the word was coined in 1841 it's been used to describe anything in our culture, from folk music to food and events that strikes a chord in the hearts of people coast to coast. This word means home and that place might look different for everyone who embraces the word. What matters most is the history that keeps our roots connected. This pride of ownership in our country can hopefully soothe the gaps between us, while letting us celebrate the things that make us beautiful. September is National Americana Month and while we rediscover our own meaningful songs, stories and food, may we find respect among our nation's most cherished traditions. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
