Carol White, Doctor of Nursing Practice and abuse survivor, shares her mother's legacy of surviving her own abuse through publishing her mother's poetry.'My mother was a survivor of domestic violence who, after 23 years of marriage, was able to escape her husband. She filed charges against him and carried those through to trial. But writing poetry was her lifeline. While she was alive, my mother did not have the confidence or money to bring her work to publication outside of entering poetry contests, where she won nearly 200 awards in 15 states. Though my mother passed away in 2005, three years ago I started the process of bringing her work to publication. There are a total of 10 books set for release over the next couple years, starting with Stoic Resilience: Poems of Suffering and Freeing Oneself from Abuse.'Find more information on Carol's website White Publishing.———————————If you need resources or help in any way, call our 24 hour hotline at 800-828-2023 or visit www.DASASMI.org.Subscribe for a new episode each week. Cinema60 continues its series of Kiss, Marry, Kill, this time with a focus on the year 1967. As previously explained, it's a variation on the ol' FMK game, played year by year as we go through the decade. Bart and Jenna challenge each other to choose one film they love (“Marry”), one film they want to see (“Kiss”), and one film they hate (“Kill”) that was released in the year 1967.In this episode, Bart and Jenna stumble upon an intriguing pattern in their otherwise random choices. From anti establishment thinking, anxiety over consumerism, a stance on personal fascism, and deeply cynical sense of humor, 1967 turned out to be one the best Kiss, Marry, Kill years we've done yet.The following films are discussed:• Peppermint Frappé (1967) Directed by Carlos Saura Starring Geraldine Chaplin, José Luis López Vázquez, Alfredo Mayo• Herostratus (1967) Directed by Don Levy Starring Michael Gothard, Gabriella Licudi, Peter Stephens• PlayTime (1967) Directed by Jacques Tati Starring Jacques Tati, Barbara Dennek, Rita Maiden• The Sorcerers (1967) Directed by Michael Reeves Starring Boris Karloff, Catherine Lacey, Ian Ogilvy• How I Won The War (1967) Directed by Richard Lester Starring Michael Crawford, John Lennon, Roy Kinnear• I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967) Directed by Michael Winner Starring Oliver Reed, Orson Welles, Carol White

Actors in Conversation: Slice of Life with Margie Haber

British theatre, film and TV actress, Gina Bramhill, who trained at RADA, talks about her childhood dream of becoming Ally McBeal.  Though she was terribly shy as a child, she loved living in her imagination and found so much of herself in the world of acting.  Margie and Gina talk about her wonderful series, Us, starring Tom Hollander and Saskia Reeves, whose character Gina played as her younger self. They discuss shooting the show and how Tom Hollander once rescued them from their nervousness by running to get a bottle of Champagne!  Gina shares her transformation since she began Margie's master class this past year in both creating a life and using the paper as part of her auditions, even on self tapes.  They chat on the zoom world and the power of bringing creativity to your self tapes.  Gina can currently be seen in Silent Witness, Avenue 5 and is living the life of 60's icon, Carol White, in Chelsea Cowboy.

In the early 2000s, Carol White was married and with two sons. At that time, commercial and residential development was booming. She discovered a major gap in the market that needed to be filled quickly. Calgary had a shortage of concrete pumps causing delays for concrete delivery companies and contractors. She researched and wrote a business plan, leased the pump and equipment and began cold calling all contracting companies in the city. Her husband would do all of the physical labour. They were booked solid from the first week of business. It went on like that for the entire year. By that time, her marriage had deteriorated and she left it and the business and moved on. Carol has always dreamed of being a full-time artist. She created Carol White Fine Art & Stationery and developed a few lines of product. After some time, it became clear that the company didn't have potential for growth without a large infusion of capital. Since there wasn't enough evidence that it would grow as she would like, she chose to focus all of her efforts on the restaurant that she and her partner opened in Kensington after selling Coyote T-Shirts. The restaurant is called PB and J YYC and, just as the name suggests, it's a peanut butter and jam sandwich restaurant with a focus on freshly ground nut butters. It was a concept that Carol and her partner mulled over and researched during their time at Coyote T-Shirts. It's growing beautifully and they have worked tirelessly toward improving it. It's not likely this will be her last business, so keep your eyes peeled for her future adventures.

Right Side of the Brain

Nell Dunn came to notice with the publication of Up the Junction (1963), a series of short stories set in South London, some of which had already appeared in the New Statesman. The book, awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, was a controversial success at the time for its vibrant, realistic and non-judgmental portrait of its working-class protagonists. It was adapted for television by Dunn, with Ken Loach, for The Wednesday Play series, which was directed by Loach and broadcast in November 1965. A cinema film version was released in 1968.Talking to Women (1965) was a collection of interviews with nine friends, "from society heiresses to factory workers (Dunn herself was both)". The interviewees included Edna O'Brien, Pauline Boty, Ann Quin and Paddy Kitchen.[5] Dunn's first novel, Poor Cow (1967) was a bestseller, achieving a succès de scandale. Poor Cow was made into a film starring Carol White and Terence Stamp, under Loach's direction. Her later books are Grandmothers (1991) and My Silver Shoes (1996). Dunn's play Steaming was produced in 1981 and a television film Every Breath You Take, was transmitted in 1987. She has also written Sisters, a film script commissioned by the BBC.She won the 1982 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.  Her latest novel is the Muse.Support the show (https://www.interactstrokesupport.org)

In this episode, I talk about Todd Haynes's 1995 film, "Safe." It stars Julianne Moore in her first collaboration with Haynes. Moore plays Carol White, a California housewife who comes down with a mysterious illness that could be a result of the chemicals and toxins in the environment. When her doctor and mainstream medicine offer her no help, she seeks relief and answers at a New Age treatment center called Wrenwood that espouses individualist self-help ideas. I talk about my own struggle with chronic health issues, how women are often not believed by doctors, why the film remains so relevant to the modern world we live in, and I also critique self-help messages. Pornography is defined as printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity that is intended to stimulate erotic rather than emotional feelings. When pornography is introduced into an intimate relationship without mutual consent, it can actually become very emotional in a deeply damaging way. Carol White understands the negative impacts of pornography addiction firsthand.
