For our final episode of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are joined by Laurel Donley, Vice Provost of Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Ms. Donley brings a unique perspective, blending her background in social work with her experience in higher education by sharing how she and her team are building a true culture of care on campus - for both students and staff. Ms. Donley is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Organizational Learning and Leadership at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was named Vice Provost and Dean for Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in July 2023, following ten years of service in Student Affairs at UNCSA and more than two decades of experience in both academic and student affairs roles. Prior to her current role, she served as Assistant Dean of Student Development and Director of High School Life, overseeing areas including high school life, residence life, new student orientation, student engagement, student assistance and support (case management), and the Fitness Center. As a recognized leader in student mental health, Ms. Donley has served on the UNC System Mental Health Task Force and was a panelist for the UNC Board of Governors' initiative on Collegiate Mental Health: Current Trends and Challenges. She is a founding member of the Higher Education Case Managers Association (HECMA) in 2011, and served as its president from 2018 to 2020. In honor of Mental Health and Stroke Awareness Month, we welcome Dr. Christine Cosby-Gaither, Visionary Founder and Executive Director of A Stroke of Grace, to discuss how her nonprofit supports Black stroke survivors and their families. Find out how to spot stroke symptoms early using the B.E. F.A.S.T. Method and learn practical steps to ‘build a new normal' after a stroke. Protect yourself and your loved ones. Dr. Cosby-Gaither completed both her Doctorate of Education and MS in Business Communication at Spaulding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Northern Kentucky University. After surviving a life-changing stroke in 2019, she turned her pain into purpose — creating trauma-informed courses, healing workbooks, and the KNOW THE SIGNS Stroke Prevention Pocket Guide to empower and educate communities. She also serves as Director of Black Health Equity at Simmons College of Kentucky (the nation's 107th Historically Black College and University), where she leads efforts to address systemic health disparities. With a background in pastoral care and counseling, Joshua shares practical insights on supporting student wellness and overcoming imposter syndrome.     At a time when our students need to be affirmed now more than ever, we continue our love series titled, “Relationships That Matter” with Dr. Jonli Tunstall, Director of Pre-College and Summer Programs at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After serving in this department for the past 20 years, Dr. Tunstall joins us to share how her department serves as a safe space for students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles. In this holistic environment of diverse learners, find out how students are affirmed through various panels and mentoring experiences that help students bond with one another and empower them to pay it forward by serving their own communities. ⁠ Dr. Tunstall received both her Ph.D. in Education with an Urban Schooling concentration and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at UCLA. In her current role as a member of the senior leadership team in the Academic Advancement Program (AAP), Dr. Tunstall oversees several programs and initiatives that work with first-generation, low income, and historically underrepresented students. She directs two programs as part of the AAP team: VIP Scholars, a social justice college access program, and the Freshman and Transfer Summer Program. Dr. Tunstall is also an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the African American Studies and Education Department. In addition to these roles, she is the co-founder of Sister to Sister, which addresses the specific needs around the retention and socialization of Black women at Historically White Institutions. Carpenter, who practices Osteopathic Medicine. After nearly 20 years of marriage, this college couple shares why they value the importance of faith, self-love and the honesty of a supportive village before the pursuit of dating and/or marriage. ⁠ André is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at University of Holy Cross in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, André is a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor in Ohio, Florida and Louisiana. He is a Xi Tau Chapter Initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and as the founder of Fokus4Ward LLC, he offers counseling and consulting services. In an effort to be closer to her family during COVID, she left the initial college she committed to, so she could complete a dual enrollment program at the University of Southern California (USC). In addition to completing both her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and her Master's degree in Studies in Law, she discovered she had another interest in becoming a Chief Pilot. As a result, she recently completed her pilot training at the U.S. Aviation Academy in Denton, Texas. Find out how she used her college experience to explore all of her interests and how her Greek organization has helped her stay emotionally grounded during this election season. ⁠ Kennedy completed both her Master of Studies in Law with an emphasis in Business, and her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science/Engineering at USC. He did not know what to expect, but he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is now in pursuit of a Theatre Arts degree at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Find out how he maintains his desire for a career in Acting while he waits for his dream job to come along, and why he believes Generation Z will be the most important voice in this year's upcoming election. ⁠ Caleb is currently completing his major in Theatre Performance and his minor in Leadership Studies at Hampton University.
