On this weeks show I welcome Joseph Grillo (also known as Sid Jagger) of HER HEAD'S ON FIRE. Joe may be best know for his first band the fantastical post-hardcore outfit GARRISON. Since then Joe has kept busy, forming and playing in number of bands along the way, such as JUDAS KNIFE, I HATE OUR FREEDOM, and GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP to name a few. In Joe's newest band he is joined Jeff Dean (The Bomb, guitar), Rodrigo Palma (Saves The Day, bass), and Jeff Gensterblum (Small Brown Bike and Able Baker Fox, drums) — it's easy to see why Grillo is stoked on creating music again. This is a lineup loaded with deep experience in some of the most beloved emo and post–hardcore bands of the past three decades. “Supergroup” feels like a decidedly un–punk term, but it's a descriptor that fits the band's collective resume. Join Joe and as we discuss his wild journey through life and music. HER HEAD'S ON FIRE - "Strange Desires" Out July 19th 2024 Thanks for listening!!! The exclusion of women from modern medicine is a complex and pervasive issue that spans centuries of medical practice. Despite advancements in healthcare, women continue to face systemic barriers that hinder their access to accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and equitable care. Historical biases, gender stereotypes, and a lack of representation in medical research have contributed to this exclusion, perpetuating disparities in health outcomes and quality of care. From underrepresentation in clinical trials to the dismissal of women's symptoms and concerns, the consequences of this exclusion are far-reaching, impacting women's health across diverse populations. In this episode of FemInnovation, host Bethany Corbin talks with Dr. Elizabeth Comen, author of the USA Today bestselling book “All in Her Head”, about the exclusion of women from medicine and how women today can advocate for their health and wellbeing in a world designed for men. Specifically, Bethany and Dr. Comen dive into the shame and stigma women encounter when trying to discuss their health concerns, the equation of women's health with reproductive health, how bias in medicine affects both patients and providers, the societal need to control women, whether femtech is the answer to the exclusion of women in medicine, and how to change the ongoing narrative of women's health. Join us for this enlightening conversation to help shift the future trajectory of women's health worldwide.About Dr. Elizabeth Comen:Elizabeth Comen, MD, has dedicated her medical career to saving the lives of women. An award-winning, internationally sought-after clinician and physician-scientist, Dr. Comen works as a medical oncologist in New York City and is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. About All in Her Head, Dr. Elizabeth Comen's new book on The Fascinating History of Women's Health.
Throughout the world, across numerous cultures, elongated skulls have been revered. Whether it's a small isolated island in the middle of the Pacific or an ancient culture, the practice of elongating skulls is as mystifying as it is unexplained. The practice has led some to speculate that it was done to enhance consciousness and psychic abilities. For the very same reason, trepanning has been conducted from Neolithic times to the modern day. We explore this strange practice and hear reports of people who have attempted to alter their consciousness by drilling holes in their heads. Sometimes with incredible improvements, though usually the person ends up in a love affair with a pigeon. Listen to find out more. Then, for our Plus+ Members, we take a look at a new angle on Bigfoot encounters and consider how they are more similar to poltergeist encounters than you might think. Is it possible that Bigfoot is being mimicked by some other unknown force? Prepare to be educated and outraged in today's episode. This week, we feature a recent episode of the Feisty podcast Hit Play Not Pause, hosted by Selene Yeager, with guest Dr. Elizabeth Comen. From being burned as witches to being barred from attending medical school, from being dismissed as hysterical to well, just being dismissed, from being shamed to being sexualized, the medical system has a long, sordid history in how it treats women and women's health. And those toxic roots still poison the waters we have to navigate to this day. If you've ever wondered why we're so far off the back with regards to our understanding of women's health and wellness and treatment, this week's guest Dr. Elizabeth Comen, author of All in Her Head: The Truth and Lies Early Medicine Taught Us About Women's Bodies and Why It Matters Today has some answers. Elizabeth Comen, MD, has dedicated her medical career to saving the lives of women. We are thrilled to engage in a conversation with the remarkable breast oncologist, Dr Elizabeth Comen, hailing from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the US. Our focus is on unravelling the intricate history of women's hormones, as we embark on a journey to comprehend the missteps along the way.“The history of women's healthcare is a story in which women themselves have too often been voiceless—a narrative instead written from the perspective of men who styled themselves as authorities on the female of the species, yet uninformed by women's own voices, thoughts, fears, pain and experiences. The result is a cultural and societal legacy that continues to shape the (mis)treatment and care of women”, writes Dr Comen.“All in Her Head” is Dr Comen's new book and wow - This book will upend everything you thought you knew about your body while empowering you to make better decisions moving forward. There is lots of information out there about the menopause but hardly any if you have had a cancer diagnosis as well. Many people say to me they have no idea what their options are, who to ask for help, and that they feel really isolated in their experiences. I started this podcast because there was nothing out there when I was thrown into surgical menopause at the age of 39, which followed on from my cancer diagnosis aged 33.Through the episodes, I want to create more awareness, share information from our fabulous guest experts, doctors and other specialists in the cancer and menopause field. And of course, I will share stories from the people in our community. So that together we can work towards a better menopause experience. For all of us.More educated, better informed and less alone.Connect with us:For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancerJoin our Facebook group:
Today I get to welcome back Dr. Amy Novatt a board certified ob-gyn who generously offered her time in the past for monthly conversations about women's reproductive healthcare. She is now the host of GynoCurious, a program that explores the experience of being an ob-gyn, the science that guides their practices and the stories women- cis, trans and nonbinary, have shared with her as they seek health and wellness. Investigating what it means to be a healer and to be healed. It's not a medical show that tells you how much estrogen you should take or the scientific method used to evaluate data but instead, a conversation about the larger canvas looking at what its like to be a medical professional working with women and how patients experience the world of ob-gyn. Conversations like, what is it like sitting in the exam room with a thin sheet of paper covering your naked body? What has been the impact of a cancer diagnosis? What it is like to go through the menopause? She hopes to talk about our fears, sexual explorations and aging adventures with respect, inquiry and science. For her, knowledge and awareness brings awe, authority and autonomy.Today we expand upon some of the topics that she's covered on the show like the biological design of women as caretaker, the impact of hormones on life and the lack of external understanding or support for how they impact women, the corporatization of medical care and the problems that ensue, how the medical profession has let down women since it's inception, how to advocate for yourself when it comes to healthcare, and how we need to break the system in order to rebuild it. Whew...If you have a topic that is a good fit for GynoCurious, be in touch with Dr. Novatt via Radio Free Rhinecliff.Following our conversation I shared from this article, "Sexism in Medicine: It's Not All in Her Head," and chatted about International Women's Day and the many Virtual Events that are taking place this year.Lastly, here's your New Moon Report. While almost all women experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, few are debilitated by severe symptoms: a condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). HG has been stigmatized and neglected by the biomedical community, with limited research funding for developing effective treatments. In this episode of Beyond the Abstract, Derek and Dan tell the remarkable story of one scientist who experienced HG herself, and her decades-long journey to find a cure. In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. Let's get to know a criminally underrated band, Since By Man. Their vocalist Sam Macon has been a long time friend of mine and we've played a lot of shows together. On this episode of #WeNeedToTalk, Malynda chats with New York Times Best Selling Author Eleanor Herman about her latest book Off with Her Head. They explore the history of misogyny, how it shows up is everyday society, the hypocrisy of reactions towards men, how participation in one "ism" usually means participation in other, and how we as a society can begin to break down misogyny. Eleanor Herman is the New York Times bestselling author of Sex with Presidents, Sex with Kings, Sex with the Queen, and several other works of popular history. She has hosted Lost Worlds for the History Channel, The Madness of Henry VIII for the National Geographic Channel, as well as a second season of America: Fact vs. Fiction for the American Heroes Channel. Her latest offering, OFF WITH HER HEAD uses Herman's signature wit and sharp eye to oust the unsettling pattern of misogyny impeding female leadership worldwide.
Ann Richardson is a writer who believes that life is full of serendipity, which makes it more fun. Ann Richardson's recent book, The Granny who Stands on Her Head, comprises a series of reflections on growing older but also includes some stories from her life. She has written numerous other books, including one about the people who provide hospice care and one about being a grandmother. Ann was born in Washington, D.C., USA, grew up in New York City and has lived with her husband in London, England since 1968. Ann and her husband have two grown-up children and two grandsons. When she needed to find part-time work when her first child was a baby, Ann discovered a love of qualitative social research. Although she has loved writing ever since childhood, she never thought of trying to become a writer when she was young, because she felt she did not have enough to say. She also needed to support her husband, while he was doing a PhD. Much later, she gained a PhD herself. Her career in research involved interviews and focus groups with a wide spectrum of situations and people, including people with learning difficulties and carers for the elderly but also many others. She wrote numerous books and articles from her research and was always recognized as a good writer. Since retiring, she has chosen to write books on new topics as set out below. This episode is definitely one for the books, especially for those people in the latter years of their lives, beginning to reflect both on their current lives and the coming of the end of life. Ann likes to think about the what-ifs in life. Ann shared these amazing points in this episode! The story behind the three books she created before The Granny who Stands on Her Head Wise Before Their Time: Ann became close friends with a man with AIDS who was organizing a conference of people with AIDS; she carried out interviews there and put these together into this book. Life in a Hospice: Ann worked in a hospice as a volunteer and realized how strange it was to look after people who were dying. She carried out a series of interviews with people working in hospice care about the nature of their work and its impact on their lives. Celebrating Grandmothers: After she became a grandmother herself, Ann thought it was so interesting that she decided to undertake a series of interviews with grandmothers about the positive and negative aspects of their lives. Ann was asked to write a series of blogs about grandmothers and other matters for an online women's magazine. While doing these, she started her journey in writing The Granny who Stands on Her Head. This is about the nature of being old: LINKS AND RESOURCES: Connect with Ann Richardson Buy Ann's The Granny who Stands on Her Head here Connect with Deborah Voll Take the Midlife Quiz Passion and Purpose Digital Workbook

Joseph Grillo from bands such as Garrison, Instruction, Gay For Johnny Depp, I Hate Our Freedom, Judas Knife and now, most recently, Her Head's On Fire joins me for a conversation about his path in music, the perspective he tends to write from with regard to his lyrics, and why all his bands seem to be groups indie emo rock all-stars. We had the pleasure of interviewing Her Head's On Fire over Zoom video.Indie rock, of all stripes, is far too long in the tooth —and the classic back catalogs far too crowded— fo half measures: If we are to have new "left of the dial" songs in an age where the wry cleverness and heart-on-sleeve (or heart-patch-on-messenger-bag?) vulnerability of yore have listed into a kind of sardonic nihilism, then those songs must be full of that strange alchemic mix of chords and melodies that make hearts flutter and souls soar—they must be incandescent; bright flares that light us up and burn away the pretenses and bullshit the world circa 2022 seems determined to encase us in.Enter Her Head's On Fire — a fiery, enlivening quartet with an unfuckwithable pedigree (Saves the Day, Garrison, Small Brown Bike, The Bomb, Gay for Johnny Depp) that serves as the DNA for a 10-track genetic splicing debut full-length, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes, that is not only simultaneously familiar and transcendent but also very, very good. If you ever thrilled to the anthems of Samiam, pounded the steering wheel to Superchunk, reveled in the waves of Dinosaur Jr's melodic fuzz, gladly went over to the Farside, got down to some Elvis Costello, or can remember where you were the first time you heard Sense Field…well, then Her Head's On Fire's heart-seeking post-post-hardcore, "emo"tive rock stemwinders will be the best thing to happen to you in a very long time.Building on the promise of an auspicious bow via last year's well-received split with living legend J. Robbins, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes is a beguiling and powerful statement: Her Head's On Fire has your number and a container of clean sonic kerosine. All you have to do is follow the light, open up to the real, and find your way back to the messy, anthem-inspiring glory of love once again. We want to hear from you! Being a mother who works from home and wears claw clips. The challenge of transitions. Solo parenting. A local government chestnut follow-up. The healing powers of nature and loved ones. Intimate partner violence. Probative value. People who don't read anymore and how reading fosters empathy. Meghan's search for the right synthesizer. Layered trauma. Obsessive thinking. TW // eating disordersI'm biased but oh my goodness, I love this guest and this episode SO much. Ahead of Refugee Week, which runs 20-26th June, it is my honour to welcome the poet Warsan Shire to the podcast. Warsan was born in Kenya to Somali parents. She migrated with her family to the UK at the age of one and her powerful poem Home - which opens with the line ‘no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark - has become the unofficial anthem to raise awareness of the refugee crisis. She's also a frequent collaborator with Beyonce - her poems are featured in the singer's seminal visual album, Lemonade. Now, at the age of 33, Warsan's first full length collection, Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head, has just been published to critical acclaim.Warsan joins me to talk about her failures in everything from breastfeeding to maths. We also talk about her eating disorder and her 'failure to control it'. We discuss what 'home' really means and what it is to be a refugee. And yes, we OBVIOUSLY talk about Beyonce.Warsan is a beautiful, powerful communicator and this interview made me think and understand better. I hope you like it as much as I do.--Warsan's poetry collection, Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head, is available to order here: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/111/1119216/bless-the-daughter-raised-by-a-voice-in-her-head/9781784743703.html--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. ALSO, our friend and Rev Alum Jeff Caudill designed the album and it looks stunning. Preoder: https://orcd.co/herheadsonfire
Director Shasha Nakhai talks about her feature film debut, Scarborough, and what a story set in one of Toronto's most undervalued communities can tell us about race, class and community. Writer Warsan Shire discusses her first full collection of poetry, Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head, about migration, womanhood, trauma and resilience. Model and singer Irina Lazareanu talks about her new book, Runway Bird: A Rock 'n' Roll Style Guide, and reflects on the style icons who inspired her.
Irish writer Colin Barrett discusses his much anticipated second collection of short stories, Homesickeness, the follow up to his hugely successful 2014 Young Skins. Long before he became the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky played the President of Ukraine. In Servant of the People he was an everyman swept into office to fight corruption. Now, as he fights the Russian advance Zelensky's comedy is being shown on Channel 4 and All 4. The Sunday Times Europe Editor Peter Conradi joins academic and writer Rommi Smith and Sameer Rahim the Arts and Books Editor at Prospect Magazine. Sameer and Rommi stay with presenter Tom Sutcliffe to discuss the first full-length book of poems from Beyonce favourite, Warsan Shire. In Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head, the Somali-born British poet explores themes of themes of migration, womanhood, Black identity and resilience. Also up for review is Run Rose Run, Dolly Parton's foray into fiction. Co-written with best-selling author James Patterson, the novel is a thriller about a singer-songwriter on the rise and on the run. The songs written about in the book correspond to an accompanying music album. We know the country music star can write stories in songs but can she write stories in books?

Huntress is an American heavy metal band. It was founded in the underground music scene of Highland Park, California when lead vocalist Jill Janus moved to Los Angeles where she met an underground metal band called 'Professor' in 2009. Huntress was signed by Napalm Records in November 2011. A debut EP Off with Her Head was released in 2010. On December 27, 2011, they released their first single, "Eight of Swords", to promote their debut album, Spell Eater. In October 2015, Janus posted a now-deleted note on Facebook announcing the band would finish its activities, but that she would continue to make music. Lead guitarist Blake Meahl, however, dismissed her statement as a consequence of her health and mental issues, and said the band would continue to perform. On August 14, 2018, Jill Janus died by suicide.
