Topics we discussed included: The advantages of keeping open dialogue with our kids Creating a safe environment for our kids to talk with us The downside of coming to our kids with an agenda Talking at, to, or with kids Making sure children are engaged when we're speaking with them Capitalizing on moments when our kids are available to talk with us How early to start thinking about open dialogue with children Many children's preference to go to Mom to talk rather than Dad How to deal respond when our kids do something wrong Shifting from content to process with our kids Remembering our goals in our interactions with our children Our expectations for how children “should” respond to our critiques and corrections Letting kids know we're there while also respecting their privacy and space The downsides of jumping in to fix or resolve things for our kids The book Paul referenced, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee (affiliate link) Paul Kesselman, PsyD, completed his doctoral degree in psychology at Yeshiva University. He has taught college level courses in child psychology. He has been working in private practice seeing individuals, families, and running groups since 2003. This week it's my pleasure to welcome Carlos Alvarenga for a chat about his new book, The Rules of Persuasion: How the World's Greatest Communicators Convince, Inspire, Lead--and, Sometimes, Deceive. Carlos is an independent researcher and author. Before writing full-time, he worked as a management consultant and adjunct professor at the Robert H.Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Carlos holds a B.A. in Humanities and Classical Greek from Hampden-Sydney College and completed the Post-Baccalaureate Program in Classics at the University of Pennsylvania. In this conversation we delve into the compelling world of persuasion as the art and science that influences every aspect of our lives. Carlos explains how he drew inspiration from Aristotle's foundational work on rhetoric to craft his book. We will unravel the subtleties of persuasion—as the act of shaping beliefs within a community—and how it distinguishes itself from manipulation and coercion. Carlos guides us through his periodic table of persuasion and the vital role language plays in shaping our reality. In addition, we discuss the shifts in teaching persuasion and the emergence of augmented intelligence, and how technology like deep-fakes are testing the limits of authenticity. Carlos also shares personal anecdotes, emphasizing the potency of storytelling, and offers insights into creating messages that resonate deeply with audiences regardless of their background or educational level. ______________________________________ Related Episodes and Links to Content Mentioned In This Episode: Kevin Costner's Eulogy For Whitney Houston What's Going On Tops Rolling Stone's 500 Best Albums of All Time Terri Sjodin on Improving Your Presentation Skills and Public Speaking Kasia Wezowski on Open Body Language & Compassionate Communication Charles Duhigg on the Super Power of Clear Communication at Home and Work ______________________________________ Connect with Carlos: Website ______________________________________ Connect with Erik: LinkedIn Facebook Instagram ______________________________________ This Podcast is Powered By: Descript Descript 101 Castmagic Ecamm Podpage Rodecaster Pro Top Productivity Books List Make sure to support the show by checking out the sponsors! My philosophy as a doctor has always been connect first, educate second. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. And this goes for all relationships, not just doctor-patient.Good communication is something we'd all like to master. And today's guest, Charles Duhigg, author of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection, is here to help us do it. A graduate of Harvard Business School and Yale College, Charles has won a prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his investigative reporting and he is also the author of international bestselling book, The Power of Habit, which has sold over 10 million copies to date.We start off our conversation, talking about habits, and why it is that so many of us struggle to make our new desired behaviours stick. The brain wants rewards and it needs cues. The trouble is we tend to let both of those things go, once we think a behaviour is becoming routine. But Charles shares that that's exactly when we need to double down and take steps to make our new behaviours feel more enjoyable. We also discuss the science of small wins, momentum and the importance of keystone habits. We then move on to talking about the importance of good communication. Good communication is inherently rewarding. It's how humans connect, form families, villages, and share information. Charles believes all of us are capable of being supercommunicators and having more meaningful conversations. And during this episode, he explains some of the skills involved, such as mirroring others and asking deeper questions – those that probe feelings not facts. Finally, we talk about how fear of saying the wrong thing can often stop us from being vulnerable and connecting, why supercommunicators ask 10 to 20 times more questions than the average person and how they often shine in group situations, not by being the ‘ideas person', but by giving the right people a spotlight. This was a truly wonderful conversation - full of practical insights to help you build better habits and become a better communicator in all aspects of your life.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Empathy for the generation divide and user behaviour patterns may need to be studied more as Singapore digitalises itself rapidly. Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at social issues of the day with guests. The hard deadline for full transition from an older card-based ticketing system to the account-based SimplyGo public transport payment system by June 1, 2024 eventually went away. This is after public outcry over SimplyGo's inability to display fares and card balances at fare gates and bus card readers. Such negative reactions have raised questions how impactful nationwide policies, like the adoption of SimplyGo, can be better communicated to the public. And is a one-size-fit-all approach even possible for Singapore's rapidly ageing population that must constantly overcome the first hurdle in adapting to technology? ST podcast editor Ernest Luis and assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong host two guest speakers in this episode: Associate Professor Helen Ko from the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) for her insights on ageing issues Ms Neeta Lachmandas, founder of ConsciousService, a training and consulting company, and also a former executive director of the Institute of Service Excellence at SMU and assistant chief executive of STB. Highlights (click/tap above): 2:33 Technology and convenience versus customer experience and communication 4:55 Selling people the upside on digital policies as well as how to handle major changes; was this just an issue for the 'older' generation? 8:05 Tailoring "instructional design" - the art and science of teaching seniors 11:25 Understanding the need for bite-sized info in small steps across older generations, "empathy" in designing public policy for an increasingly ageing population 18:08 Contradictory "digital transformation" messaging not an issue exclusive to only Singapore 20:45 Why it's good to aim for "universal design"; why seniors are a highly diverse group Produced by: Ernest Luis (ernest@sph.com.sg), Lynda Hong (lyndahong@sph.com.sg) and Hadyu Rahim Edited by: Hadyu Rahim Follow In Your Opinion Podcast here and rate us: Channel: https://str.sg/w7Qt Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wukb Spotify: https://str.sg/w7sV SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Read ST's Opinion section: https://str.sg/w7sH --- Discover more ST podcast channels: COE Watch: https://str.sg/iTtE In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad Music Lab: https://str.sg/w9TX Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts --- Special edition series: True Crimes Of Asia (6 eps): https://str.sg/i44T The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuZ2 Invisible Asia (9 eps): https://str.sg/wuZn Stop Scams (10 eps): https://str.sg/wuZB Singapore's War On Covid (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuJa --- Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #inyouropinionSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Get your EVOLVE merch today at https://evolve-cast.myshopify.com “Relationships, long term relationships are hard. They take work. You've heard it over and over again…communication is the key to a relationship. But what does that mean? You see, a few years ago my wife and I were talking and, despite all of the good things about our relationship we simply were dysfunctional when it came to solving certain problems together…until we learned and started practicing almost daily, the system we are going to talk about today.” A few years ago something changed. Danielle and I had been going through the motions and found that we simply weren't getting anywhere when it came to conflict resolution in any meaningful way. While much of our relationship was good and we were growing together this lack in skill kept us from working together to solve problems and come together on solutions. After picking up and reading Marshal Rosenberg's “Non-Violent Communication” we decided it would be worth the time to practice daily and develop our ability to openly communicate what it alive in us. Fast forward to today and we are still in the habit of almost daily practice. We've added and subtracted a few things to make the practice work for us. It's simple, elegant and beautiful and it has helped us come together in a way we weren't confident was possible. The practice we share in episode 70 is one we hope can be beneficial for others. In sharing we are opening up one aspect of our relationship not to showcase or say that we are experts, but to simply share something that may be beneficial for others. We are human. We still make mistakes, bad decisions and act in ways that require apologies after the fact. “The practice” as we call it has created a system, a framework and a foundation for communication that, over time has become deeply rewarding for both of us. We hope this episode will help give you some framework to build off as well! Follow Us! On this episode of the Raving Patients Podcast, Len sits down with Robert Maguire to discuss the importance of focusing on "people" as the primary way to build your dental practice. It's the "heart" of "the hands, the head, and the heart" philosophy. They discuss the importance of great communication with yourself, your team, and your patients. I'll talk about the initial steps dentists can take to make this happen. The benefits will be more joy, more happiness, and more fulfillment, as well as greater retention of team members and increased income for everyone. Takeaways from this episode includes: How "Dentistry's Fulfillment Coach" came about. Get off the "hamster wheel?" The Hands, The Head, and The Heart? What are some specific steps dentists can take to implement this philosophy? The big idea is that "focus on the geese that kay the golden eggs and the golden eggs will come. So many people think that they have to join in the conversation and even one-up what's just been said that they miss the opportunity to truly connect. “I can't wait to get to Hawaii” “Oh, me either! This pandemic is something! I just love the sand on Waikiki and the sun. Oh, and you can't beat the food.” And on and on and on, leaving the other person out of the conversation. Beware of hijacking the conversation in an effort to join in. When you make it about yourself, you've missed a HUGE opportunity to actually connect. Take a listen and let me know what you think!
