In 2013, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey started a movement with Conscious Capitalism, a New York Times bestseller that taught the power of the heroic spirit of business. Since then, readers and fans have been asking Mackey for a follow-up on leadership. Now he's answered their call, to inspire entrepreneurs and trailblazers to take the next step: as leaders who see beyond the bottom line. Conscious Leadership: Elevating Humanity Through Business (Portfolio, 2020) by John Mackey, Steve McIntosh and Carter Phipps pulls back the veil on the strategies that have helped Mackey shepherd Whole Foods through four decades of incredible growth and innovation, including its recent sale to Amazon. Through time-tested virtues, from Passion for Purpose to Seek Win-Win-Win Solutions, each chapter will challenge you to rethink conventional business wisdom. The book weaves together anecdotes and case studies, profiles of other conscious leaders and innovative techniques for self-development -- culminating in an empowering call to action. In this episode host Mark McKergow talks to Carter Phipps about Conscious Leadership, how being 'conscious' (aware, learning, flexible, not asleep!) is ever more important for leaders in businesses and elsewhere. The book is a rich collection of ideas and examples - a few well-known, others less familiar - which take forward the ideas of purpose-driven businesses with wider ambitions than simply making money. Carter is also refreshingly up-front about the need for businesses to make money as well! In the conversation Carter explores how purpose and effectively co-exist for successful businesses, how leadership has become a crucial factor in talent engagement and retention, and how long-term thinking becomes ever more important as the range of stakeholders grows. He also mentions 'Cultural Intelligence', a way to look at different world views and seek to help people understand where others are coming from so they can work together and not simply slug it out. Mark McKergow is an author, speaker, facilitator and coach specialising in solution-focused and post-heroic leadership approaches in organisations. He is the author of six books including The Solution Focus (Nicholas Brealey Publishing, 2007) and Host: Six new roles of engagement (Solutions Books, 2014), and is currently building the Village In The City project. It takes a lot to be a leader. It takes more to be a great leader. And it takes an incredible commitment to be an outstanding leader. What is that thing that can make the difference? While there are many qualities that contribute to being a great leader, possibly the most salient is being incredibly aware or conscious. And that's where this episode's guest comes in. Carter Phipps wrote a book called Conscious Leadership with two other authors, one of whom was Steve McIntosh, and the other was John Mackey, the CEO and founder of Whole Foods. I loved the book and I'm not alone. Forbes said it is based on the leadership John Mackey “used to reach the top of the business world—and do plenty of good in the process.” Conscious Leadership serves as user-friendly text that is easy to implement to improve leadership from the top all the way down. It appears that the intention of this book is not merely to boost those who are at the top but to positively impact all stakeholders within an organization. Carter has written another book called Evolutionaries and hosts a podcast called “Thinking Ahead.” He has a deep understanding of conscious leadership and Following the ideas he shares may positively influence attrition, morale, external perception, and a host of other important factors of well-being of any organization.
This is a new podcast interview with author Carter Phipps about the book Conscious Leadership: Elevating Humanity Through Business, a roadmap for innovative, value-based leadership—in business and in society.

Along with Steve McIntosh and John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, he has just released a new book called Conscious Leadership: Elevating Humanity Through Business. I am so pleased to be joined by Carter Phipps in this episode of the Fully Integrated Leadership Podcast. Carter is an author, speaker, teacher, economist, tech guru, and political thinker who has dedicated his life and career to expanding consciousness...in himself, in others, and in cultural and organizational systems. Carter's new book, Conscious Leadership, which he co-authored with Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey and Carter's business partner Steve McIntosh, is a highly anticipated book in the leadership space. Carter and I dive into the concepts they lay out in the book, as well as some of the stories of the amazing people and organizations they encountered when researching and writing the book. The book lays out nine principles for becoming a more conscious leader, which Carter explains in the episode. We also dive into other interesting topics, including: How Carter's upbringing in Oklahoma shaped the decisions he made in young adulthood How he bypassed Stanford Law School and decided to pursue his spiritual development in India His path back to the corporate world, working in the tech industry in CA and MA A major decision he made to leave the corporate world to again pursue a more spiritual path, this time working for a magazine The founding of his think tank, The Institute for Cultural Evolution http://carterphipps.com/think-tank/ How cultures evolve over time and how he views our current place in the evolution of consciousness Please order a copy of Carter's book at https://www.amazon.com/Conscious-Leadership-Elevating-Humanity-Business/dp/0593083628 To learn more about Carter and his work, visit his website at http://carterphipps.com/about/
Insightful author, speaker, and consultant Carter Phipps joins Terry to explore our intensifying political, economic, and cultural crises in the U.S. Carter begins by reflecting on his previous home — the San Francisco Bay Area — and how, in many ways, today’s progressive cities do not resemble the healthy and sustainable future societies he envisions. He and Terry consider how progressives might more effectively care for and criticize their own tribe, while also integrating innovative conservative solutions. Here are some of the questions they discuss: How have some progressive attitudes formed in the ’70s and ’80s become suppressive and counterproductive in 2020? What can we learn from the socio-economic successes and failures of the San Francisco Bay Area? How can we operate outside our “official” cultural narratives and constructively criticize our own tribal habits? Can we reduce polarization within ourselves by embracing and integrating the partial truths of the “other” side? Can that make us more effective transpartisans? Carter is the co-author (with Whole Foods founder John Mackey and philosopher Steve McIntosh) of the upcoming book Conscious Leadership. He also authored the important bestseller, Evolutionaries — and he was previously the executive editor of What Is Enlightenment? magazine from 2005-2010. With McIntosh, he co-founded the social policy think tank, the Institute for Cultural Evolution. He has most recently been writing, speaking, and consulting at the intersection of business, politics, and culture. Most of all, Carter is an insightful observer of deep and mostly unnoticed cultural emergents, currents and dynamics, “Thinking Ahead” with clarity and balance. Why do we see the past through rose-coloured glasses, but not the future? Psychologists tell us that human beings have a tendency to be fearful and pessimistic about the future, while simultaneously romanticising the past. If the theory is true, it might help explain the difficulties we often have in making informed decisions and effectively planning for the future.

When we think of evolution, we may first envision fossils and fruit flies, Charles Darwin and perhaps Richard Dawkins. But what if our current scientific understanding of evolution was just the tip of the iceberg? What if there’s a way to see evolution that could transform not just your understanding of the physical world, but also your most fundamental sense of self-identity? That could give you a rational, intellectually informed sense of optimism for the future? That could even provide a new source of spiritual insight and inspiration? As we explore on ConsciousSHIFT - evolution is a master creative process in which we all participate, consciously or unconsciously ... ours is a World in Process. Today, a movement of visionary scientists, philosophers, and spiritual thinkers is forging a new understanding of evolution that honors science, reframes culture, and radically updates spirituality. Author Carter Phipps calls them Evolutionaries. And Julie Ann will be exploring this emerging worldview with Carter Phipps, former executive editor of EnlightenNext magazine and author of "EVOLUTIONARIES: Unlocking the Spiritual and Cultural Potential of Science’s Greatest Idea."Join us to discover how scientists are revealing that cooperation drives evolution — all the way from quarks to quadrupeds to us ... and the transformative truths at the heart of the new “evolutionary spirituality.” Guaranteed to challenge your thought - and spark your imagination.
