Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2 In our last episode we explored how leadership might show up in the coaching room, even if we're not formally engaged in leadership coaching and why, as Transformational Coaches, we might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions. In this episode we're putting an element of theory behind the concept of leadership and in doing so, explore a number of different leadership styles; ten in fact. We discuss the pros and cons of each leadership style and when it might be useful to engage in each. We also offer examples of coaching situations where we have each discussed leadership styles with our coachees. Join us in this episode of the podcast, where we complete our conversation on leadership in the coaching room. Each of us is wired with a specific hierarchy of three core instinctual drives, shaping how we move through the world. The Instincts (sometimes referred to as Instinctual Variants) is part of the Enneagram framework and plays a powerful role in how our personalities form. One Instinct tends to dominate and demands most of our attention, a second supports it, while a third gets neglected and becomes a blind spot. In this episode, Michael, Hari, and Rasanath unpack the three Instincts—Sexual, Social, and Self-Preservation—and how they show up in our daily lives. They explore the energy behind each, how these Instincts function at their healthiest, and how they can create suffering. By understanding your “Instinctual Stack,” you can begin to shift from automatic patterns to conscious integration, creating space for real growth and movement toward the best version of yourself.Links Enneagram Certification Program (starts May 17th) Upbuild Coaching Certification Training (starts in October) Upbuild Website Instagram: @upbuildnycFacebook: UpbuildLinkedIn: Upbuild
In this episode, I share a powerful self-awareness moment that unfolded during my son's first high school football camp. What began as empathy quickly revealed itself as something else—projected anxiety, assumptions, and imposter syndrome I was unknowingly carrying on his behalf. I explore the difference between empathy, being an empath, and projected empathy—and how this subtle but impactful emotional projection shows up in leadership. You'll hear real-life leadership examples, what to do when you recognize this in yourself, and why showing up with trust instead of assumption changes everything. Enjoy! If you've coached an individual within the NHS there is a good chance that you have been called upon to have a conversation around leadership. Not necessarily about the mechanics of the leadership role but perhaps around how the coachee shows up and how they interact with other people. Leadership presents itself throughout organisations and often those without a defined leadership role are taking responsibility for heading up certain initiatives or leading on certain aspects of the culture. Tom has been coaching leaders for 15 years and has found that the main topic of conversation in the coaching room for leaders is other people and the relationship dynamics that the coachee is experiencing and perhaps struggling with. Beyond their people issues, leaders often use coaching as a safe space to explore their concerns, their worries and their insecurities. Being in a leadership role is often a lonely place and being able to have confidential conversations with someone you trust is invaluable. Join us in this episode of the podcast, the first of two leadership episodes, where we explore why we, as Transformational Coaches, might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions. Hey there! Send us a message. Who else should we be talking to? What topics are important? Use FanMail to connect! Let us know! The CopDoc Podcast - Season 8 - Episode 153What happens when a basketball coach becomes a police chief? Chief John Fisher of the Bedford, Massachusetts, Police Department brings a refreshingly human perspective to law enforcement leadership, replacing command-and-control with connection and coaching.Fisher's journey from U.S. Coast Guard service through the ranks of Nashua, NH Police Department to his current role reveals a leadership style fundamentally shaped by his parallel career coaching high school basketball for over 30 seasons. "Coaching happens in split seconds," he explains, "but you still have to fall back on a coaching mentality. Same way we do in law enforcement."At the heart of Fisher's approach is what he calls "the coaching sandwich" – opening with value recognition, suggesting improvement, and closing with encouragement. This technique acknowledges the reality that most police interactions involve people experiencing "their worst possible moment," requiring officers skilled in human connection more than tactical proficiency. When taking command of new departments, Fisher began by listening rather than dictating, meeting individually with officers to understand their perspectives before implementing change.Fisher challenges traditional notions of police authority, recognizing that today's departments include officers spanning from their 20s to 60s, each generation requiring different leadership approaches. His philosophy emphasizes critical thinking through questions rather than commands, preparing teams for crisis through "what if" scenarios, and building community connections that transcend enforcement.Whether you're in law enforcement, leadership, or simply interested in organizational culture, Fisher's insights offer valuable lessons on mentoring the next generation, navigating institutional change, and maintaining optimism while facing challenging realities. Ready to rethink what effective leadership looks like? Confidence is one of the most essential - and misunderstood - keys to leadership magic. In this second episode of the Three Keys to Leadership Magic series, we explore what confidence truly is, what gets in the way of it, and how to build it from the inside out. You'll hear personal stories, practical strategies, and mindset shifts that help cultivate what I call grounded confidence - the kind that allows you to take risks, face feedback, and lead with authenticity even when you're unsure or uncomfortable. Whether you struggle with imposter syndrome, people-pleasing, or self-doubt, this episode will help you understand how to override limiting beliefs and start showing up with boldness and trust in yourself. Because when you lead from belief—not proof—you create real impact. Enjoy! Angie Robinson Links + Ways to Connect: Leading Through Uncertainty Mini-Coaching Package (limited time!) From nurturing talent across a Global Banking Giant to launching her own Leadership Coaching practice, Tace Heuston's journey epitomizes the courage to embrace change and follow your passion. After 33 remarkable years at JP Morgan Chase, where she rose to become Global Head of Talent Development impacting over 30,000 employees, Tace has stepped into entrepreneurship with Training and Coaching Enterprises (T.A.C.E - see what she's doing there?!)The essence of Tace's approach to Leadership Development is beautifully simple: "The only thing holding you back is you." Throughout her career, she's been driven by an authentic desire to help others succeed, particularly women navigating workplace challenges. As the architect of JP Morgan's Re-entry Program, she created pathways for women returning to careers after family breaks, addressing the often-overlooked talent pool of experienced professionals eager to contribute again. What makes Tace's coaching distinctive is her rare combination of corporate wisdom and genuine empathy. She recognizes that senior leaders often lack safe spaces to be vulnerable about their challenges – everyone expects them to have all the answers. Through executive coaching, team development, and her signature "Thrive" program for women leaders, she creates that crucial space where authentic growth happens.Tace's personal philosophy of "be brave, do the things that frighten you most" guided her own leap into entrepreneurship. Drawing from her father's example as a business owner and her lifelong passion for nurturing others (which began when teaching Sunday school in her twenties), she's created a coaching practice that embodies her values of kindness, courage, and saying "yes" to opportunity.Ready to discover your leadership advantage? Many of us pride ourselves on our ability to compartmentalize. We like to keep our personal and professional lives separate, push aside difficult emotions, and stay productive in the face of whatever comes our way. But what if this “skill” we value so highly is quietly cutting us off from our own hearts? In this episode, Hari Prasada, Rasanath, and Vipin examine why compartmentalization seems helpful but ultimately prevents us from being our best self. They distinguish between presence and suppression, explore how disconnection from the heart affects our relationships, and discuss what it takes to return to the emotions we've long set aside.Links Enneagram Certification Program (starts May 17th) Upbuild Coaching Certification Training (starts in October) Upbuild Website Instagram: @upbuildnycFacebook: UpbuildLinkedIn: Upbuild

How does someone rise from stacking pallets in a Pepsi warehouse to leading a billion-dollar brand? In this episode, I sit down with Scott Miller, former Essentia Water CEO and author of Summit Mindset, to unpack the philosophy that turns relentless ambition into meaningful success. Scott brings his book's principles to life as he shares the four pillars that ground him Faith, Family, Business, and Others, proving that sustainable achievement begins when people come before profit. He walks us through his Failure → Reflection → Persistence cycle, the daily rituals that fuel high performance, and the game-changing question he asks his team every week: "What did we suck at this time?" because real growth starts with honest reflection. The conversation turns deeply personal as Scott revisits a heart-to-heart with his father on his deathbed, a moment that still shapes his leadership today. At the core of it all? The idea of a North Star, a guiding light that cuts through the noise when data and pressure cloud judgment. Scott challenges us to define ours, lean on our own pillars, and keep climbing, especially when the summit feels out of reach. We wrap up with practical ways to build cultures where vulnerability fuels strength, ambition goes hand in hand with kindness, and true leadership starts within. If you're ready to rise without leaving your values behind press play and let Summit Mindset show you the way. Meet Our Guest: Scott Miller Scott Miller is a seasoned executive and author renowned for his transformative leadership in the global beverage industry. Now the Co-founder & CEO of YESLY Water, Scott began his career on the warehouse floor at Pepsi, gaining firsthand experience that propelled him through the ranks to executive leadership roles. Miller's people-first approach to business has been a hallmark of his career, emphasizing innovation, corporate social responsibility, and community involvement. Notably, he led the growth and acquisition of Essentia, a national bottled water brand, culminating in its sale to global food and beverage leader Nestlé. In his debut book, The Summit Mindset: Winning the Battle of You Versus You, co-authored with James C. Moore, Miller shares insights drawn from his personal and professional journey. The book serves as a guide for individuals seeking to overcome internal obstacles and achieve personal and professional growth. Miller introduces concepts like identifying one's "North Star" and emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, consistency, and embracing change to reach one's full potential. Miller's philosophy centers on the belief that by confronting our internal challenges and maintaining a commitment to continuous improvement, we can attain both personal fulfillment and professional success. What You'll Learn in this Episode: The story behind The Summit Mindset and the four pillars that guide Scott's life Why adversity is the greatest teacher—and how to build consistency through it The power of asking, “What did we suck at?” in high-performance cultures How vulnerability and humility foster stronger, more accountable teams Why protecting your “sense of self” is the most important leadership asset The difference between success that lasts and success that fades How habits create confidence, and confidence creates transformation What it means to serve others while fiercely competing at the highest level How Scott's health challenges and personal losses shaped his leadership style Resources & Links Scott Miller Book: The Summit Mindset on Amazon Instagram: @ScottMillerYouVsYou LinkedIn: Scott Miller Ed Molitor LinkedIn: Ed Molitor Website: www.themolitorgroup.com YouTube Channel: The Athletics of Business Join us at the 2025 Coaching Effect Summit in Kansas City, June 11–12. Mike and Stephen dive deeper into what makes a team consistently excel. They explore why humility is such a powerful trait in a leader and how staying curious can unlock new ideas from your team. Stephen shares how genuine listening – not just hearing words – builds trust and uncovers issues leaders might otherwise miss. The discussion shifts to the art of asking great questions. Stephen explains that sometimes posing the right question can lead your team to find the answer themselves, which empowers everyone. They also talk about getting your whole team involved in problem-solving, instead of the leader tackling every challenge alone. Throughout the conversation, Stephen highlights the often underestimated impact of appreciation. He reveals how something as simple as a heartfelt “thank you” can energize your team and motivate people to go the extra mile. It's a down-to-earth, insight-packed conversation that leaves you with practical ideas you can start using with your own team right away. Highlights The surprising way humility makes a team perform better How a leader's genuine curiosity can spark creativity in their team What “listening like a leader” really means in practice Why asking questions often works better than giving your team answers Engaging your team in problem-solving instead of tackling every issue alone A fresh take on showing appreciation – how a sincere thank-you boosts morale Key Takeaways Embrace humility: Admit you don't have all the answers and ask your team for input. Stay curious: Keep asking “why?” and learning from your team members every day. Listen actively: Give your full attention, and ask follow-up questions to truly understand your people. Ask rather than tell: Guide your team with thoughtful questions instead of just issuing orders. Solve problems together: Involve your team in brainstorming solutions to build buy-in and confidence. Show genuine appreciation: Let people know you value their work – small thank-yous go a long way. Connect with Steven on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevengaffneycompany/

In Part 1 of Mike Lejeune's interview with Stephen Gaffney on Strategies for Tomorrow's Leaders, they delve into what it takes to build a consistently high-achieving team. Stephen emphasizes that trust and honest communication are essential for great teamwork. He and Mike discuss how leaders can create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing concerns and real feedback—without fear. Stephen explains that when people feel emotionally safe, they're more likely to speak up about problems and contribute ideas, which ultimately drives better results. In fact, he shares a story of a struggling team that turned their performance around once they made open, honest conversations a daily habit. Another key theme of this episode is the importance of focusing on outcomes instead of just effort. Stephen challenges leaders to rethink how they define success: it's not about how hard people try, but what they actually accomplish. He offers practical tips for shifting a team's mindset toward results, like setting clear goals and rewarding achievements. Throughout the conversation, you'll hear real-world examples and simple strategies that any leader can use to boost trust, encourage open dialogue, and keep their team focused on what really matters. Highlights Why people don't tell the truth at work: Stephen shares the top reason and how to fix it A team transformed: How a struggling team turned around once honest feedback became the norm Results vs. effort: The culture shift that happens when you reward outcomes instead of hours worked Inviting tough feedback: Stephen's tips for making it safe for your team to speak up (even with bad news) No more “shooting the messenger”: What to do as a leader when you hear uncomfortable truths Consistency in performance: Why high-achieving teams focus on repeated wins, not one-off successes Key Takeaways Create psychological safety for honesty. Teams perform best when people feel safe to speak up with the truth. Measure success by results, not effort. Emphasize outcomes achieved instead of hours spent or “trying hard.” Invite candid feedback often. Regularly ask your team for honest input and listen without getting defensive. Lead by example. Admit your own mistakes and share your honest thoughts respectfully – it sets the tone for everyone else. Make accountability a team effort. Encourage team members to hold each other responsible for results, not just rely on the boss. Focus on solutions, not blame. When things go wrong, discuss how to improve and reach the goal next time rather than pointing fingers. When life feels uncertain—whether it's due to organizational change, societal shifts, or personal transitions—it can be hard to feel like we're “thriving.” In this episode, I explore a question a client recently asked: “Is there a module on thriving through uncertainty?” We unpack that word thriving, examine why uncertainty is so unsettling for our brains, and walk through practical ways to manage ourselves and support others during those uncertain in-between moments. I also revisit key concepts from Episodes 113 and 114 about navigating change and transition, including the Bridges Transition Model and the role of personality preferences. You'll learn how uncertainty affects our emotions, bodies, and behaviors—and how to regain a sense of agency with exercises like identifying fears, controlling the controllables, and leaning into connection. On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, we delve into leadership with Jim Carlough, an accomplished business strategist and author of "The Six Pillars of Effective Leadership: A Roadmap to Success." Drawing upon over thirty years of professional experience, Mr. Carlough asserts that effective leaders are cultivated through deliberate practice and mentorship. He recounts his early leadership journey, which commenced with his election to public office following his collegiate education, emphasizing how a pivotal question from a city manager regarding integrity profoundly influenced his ethical framework for leadership. Mr. Carlough underscores the critical role of mentorship, observing emerging leaders thrive with appropriate guidance, whereas those lacking such support will likely encounter challenges. In his book, he delineates the "Six Pillars of Effective Leadership," with integrity as the fundamental element. He further elaborates on the importance of compassion and empathy, highlighting leaders' need to support their team members actively. Additional traits such as focus, stability, and humour are also discussed, illustrating how these characteristics enhance team dynamics. The episode culminates with reflections on assessing leadership effectiveness through indicators such as low employee turnover rates and high levels of commitment. Mr. Carlough advocates for ongoing engagement and mentorship, encouraging current and prospective leaders to invest in their personal development and that of their teams, thereby fostering an environment conducive to growth and success within their organizations. We explore how our sense of identity is often deeply connected to how we contribute, and what happens when that "how" changes. Jonathan shares insights on the emotional and practical challenges of identity shifts in leadership, why self-awareness is crucial, and how organizations and individuals can better prepare for these changes. Whether you're stepping into leadership for the first time or guiding others through it, this conversation offers valuable perspectives on navigating growth, vulnerability, and purpose. Enjoy! Christina pulls back the curtain on a week inside her coaching practice. From money mindset meltdowns to multimillion-dollar business strategy sessions, she shares client stories (anonymously, of course) that will make you feel seen, validated, and so not alone. Whether you're a CEO drowning in payroll panic, a high achiever seeking clarity, or a woman juggling business, family, and the overwhelm that comes with growth—this episode is your mirror. Christina talks through the power of mindset and strategy, what investing in herself taught her about alignment, and why she's shifting her focus to work deeper with those who are ready to rise. She gets vulnerable, shares her own behind-the-scenes chaos (hello, 75 Hard), and offers a powerful reminder: you don't need to be in crisis to want more—you just need to be brave enough to say yes to it.
In this episode, I'm talking about why now—more than ever—is a time to lead with heart. I share what I'm hearing from clients, what I'm noticing in organizations, and why staying grounded in human-centered leadership is essential. From self-awareness and communication to empathy and change management, this episode is a reminder that your leadership matters—especially in challenging times. Enjoy!
