The Future of Religion: Live From Theology Beer Camp

Homebrewed Christianity Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 74:33

In this thought-provoking episode, former neuroscientist-turned-Franciscan sister Ilia Delio offers a radical vision for the future of religion at Theology Beer Camp. Speaking to a community of spiritual seekers, Delio places humanity within our cosmic context—mere seconds in the universe's 13.8 billion-year story—while arguing that we are the universe becoming conscious of itself. She challenges institutional religion's static cosmologies, drawing on Teilhard de Chardin's integration of evolution and faith to advocate for a "religion of the Earth" that recognizes God as "in love with matter." With urgency, Delio warns that if religion doesn't evolve beyond dogma into creative participation with cosmic processes, technology will replace it as humanity's guiding force. The conversation, complemented by responses from biblical scholar Pete Enns, exemplifies the kind of boundary-pushing theological dialogue that makes Theology Beer Camp a unique gathering for those reimagining faith at the intersection of science, ecology, and spirituality. In this explosive live episode, Courtenay Turner will unravel the ideological undercurrents of Game~B-a movement positioning itself as a decentralized, pluralistic alternative to modern civilization's “rivalrous systems” while advancing a technocratic vision steeped in Hegelian dialectics and Leftist teleology. Framed as a “post-political” solution to societal collapse, Game~B's fusion of blockchain networks, AI-driven collective intelligence, and utopian rhetoric mirrors the Marxist critique of alienation-yet proposes a technological “Omega Point” eerily aligned with H.G. Wells' World Brain, Teilhard de Chardin's noosphere, and the Dark Enlightenment's war on “The Cathedral”.Key Themes:1: Game~B's Hegelian Roots:• How Game~B's critique of “Game~A” (neoliberal capitalism) recycles Marxist resentment of civilizational “rivalry” while rebranding collectivism as decentralized network states.• Its vision of “emergent coherence” through blockchain and AI mirrors Wells' call for a “permanent World Encyclopedia” and Teilhard's noospheric convergence, fulfilling Leftism's transcendent aspirations without overt coercion.2: The Phoenix Agenda:• Bret Weinstein's call to “Phoenix the Republic” and Jim Rutt's musings on “burning down” civilization's operating system evoke Operation Phoenix's CIA-orchestrated “creative destruction.” Is this a blueprint for controlled collapse?• Parallels to Hesse's Glass Bead Game: Will Game~B's “membranes” of self-organizing networks prioritize spiritual elitism over democratic accountability?3: Technocratic Singularity:• SingularityNET's decentralized AI market and optimal incentives for collective intelligence promise cooperation-but could entrench algorithmic governance.• Teilhard's Omega Point meets Silicon Valley: Is Game~B a secular rapture for the “Cognitariat,” leveraging blockchain to bypass nation-states?4: Leftism in Right-Wing Clothing:• James Lindsay's analysis of Leftist “Manichean telos” finds new expression in Game~B's romanticization of indigenous systems and Aquarian-age rhetoric.• Dark Enlightenment critiques of “The Cathedral” are co-opted to legitimize a post-democratic tech aristocracy. Join Courtenay as she dissects whether Game~B is humanity's salvation-or a Trojan Horse for a digitized Neo-Feudalism. Can decentralized networks transcend ideological capture, or will they amplify the very rivalries they claim to solve? Is the Phoenix a symbol of renewal-or a Tavistock-approved psyop? Tune in for a no-holds-barred exploration of civilization's next OS. __________________________________________________________________ ▶ GET On-Demand Access for Courtenay's Cognitive Liberty Conference Cognitive liberty Conference ----------------------------------------- ▶ Follow & Connect with Courtenay: CourtenayTurner.com Linktree ▶ Support my work & Affiliate links: Buy Me A Coffee GiveSendGo Venmo Cash APP RNC Store Vitamin B-17! Far Infrared Saunas...Promo: COURTZ Stem Cell Activation Gold Gate Capital Free Satellite Phone...Promo: COURTZ MagicDichol Goldbacks=Real Currency! This sermon delves into the themes of patience, growth, and the transformative power of trusting in the slow work of God. Through the writings of Teilhard de Chardin and insights from the book 'Slow Church,' the sermon challenges cultural obsessions with speed, prompting the pursuit of a deeper, more intentional Christian community. Exploring the concept of 'North Star' communities, the sermon highlights the significance of being a liberating church, drawing from historical examples like the desert monks of North Africa and the hush harbors of enslaved African Americans. In this episode, Ilia Delio returns to discuss Teilhard de Chardin's philosophy and its relevance to current technological advancements, specifically artificial intelligence. We explore Teilhard's integration of science, religion, and evolution, highlighting his concept of 'withinness' and 'withoutness' and his vision of a future marked by greater complexity and consciousness. The discussion delves into Teilhard's anticipation of technology's role in human evolution, the need for a cosmic perspective in understanding AI, and the potential for technology to enhance human love and compassion. The conversation also touches on Teilhard's notion of the 'noosphere,' the mystical elements of human existence, and the imperative to envision and co-create a future that fosters planetary unity and the greater good. Why So Many Scholars Love Bernard Lonergan, SJ with Jonathan Heaps

There is a list of Jesuit giants through history you hear over and over. That list starts with Saint Ignatius and his companions, of course, then includes to other Jesuit saints and blesseds to more modern Jesuits who are often called by just one name: Rahner. Hopkins. De Lubac. Teilhard. Arrupe. Dulles. Ellacuria. Bergoglio. And today's episode is about one more on this list: Lonergan. Bernard Lonergan was a Canadian Jesuit philosopher and theologian who lived from 1904 to 1984. And to be honest, his work is intimidating. He was pretty clearly a genius and wrote volumes on volumes of work on topics like epistemology, the philosophy of science, economic and political theory, and so much more. His most significant work is a 1957 book called “Insight: A Study of Human Understanding.” Whatever Lonergan was up to during his life was so important that there are scores of scholars who devote their careers today to studying and responding to his work. Today's guest is one of these scholars: Jonathan Heaps is the director of the Bernard J. Lonergan Institute at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and the author of the recent book The Ambiguity of Being: Lonergan and the Problems of the Supernatural. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Jonathan to introduce Lonergan to us and explain why there is this whole cottage industry around Lonergan's thought and why he's still important today. Jon did a great job translating some of Lonergan's big ideas into language even Mike could understand. We think you'll enjoy the chance to get this accessible introduction to one of the most influential North American Jesuits ever. This is the first of a three-part series entitled: Made in the Image, Growing in the Likeness.  This first part's title is: Being is Becoming: Why the Trinity is the Template of All Reality.  Marie Woods: Host of the "Everything You Need to Know in a Relationship" podcast and president/ founder of Life Above Foundation. In this enlightening episode, Marie and Doug discuss how the Trinity is the pattern for everything. Doug Scott's Bio Doug Scott, LCSW, works as a mental health counselor in his private practice in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from college in 1997, he served as an international volunteer for two years in Bluefields, Nicaragua. This intense experience changed his life and he returned to the US to pursue graduate studies in clinical social work and pastoral ministry at Boston College. The nexus of spirituality and psychology have always intrigued Doug since childhood and he brings this sensibility to his counseling practice. Doug Scott, LCSW, MA, grew up Catholic and was always drawn to the mystical lineage within this belief system. He had experiences with Jesus, Mary, and angels at an early age. His mystical inclinations have led him to seek the depth of things and teachers who inspire him, including: Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault, Ilia Delio, Teilhard de Chardin, Alfred North Whitehead, Jim Finley, and the lives of the Saints such as St. Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Teresa of Avila, and Teresa of Lisieux. Doug sees the Trinity in everything and everywhere.  He sees how the living pattern of the Trinity provides the power for evolution in biology, psychology, and spirituality. For him, the Trinity is the codeword or abbreviated name of God. What is the long version? Something like this:  The Who-ing, the Why-ing, and the How-ing of Eternal Becoming. Finally, Doug felt called to develop an approach—a type of pedagogy—that attempts to identify the steps in transformation and how a counselor, spiritual director, or caregiver in any position can help someone else initiate and process through the path of wholeness-making.  This is the SH!PS Approach.    Presentation Outline: A. Law of Three B. Aware-Consciousness Principle C. Creative Principle D. Pan-Experientialism E. To Hold, To Heal, To Bless: Pan-Sacramentalism

Over time, we start to filter life through these labels, obscuring our view of the beauty and sacredness that are alive and present in every moment.  We can begin to lose our sense of optimism. Expectancy gets replaced with anxiety and we trade our wonder for worry. Even though the French paleontologist and theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin died in 1955, it feels like his work is still being discussed and debated in theological circles all the time. There are numerous associations and publications dedicated solely to exploring Teilhard's huge body of work. He made it back into the news this past fall when Pope Francis described him as “often misunderstood” during a Mass in Mongolia. Host Mike Jordan Laskey reached out to one of the foremost Teilhard experts in the United States, Sister Kathy Duffy, SSJ, to learn more about this fascinating Jesuits. Sr. Kathy is a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia and the president of the of the American Teilhard Association. She's also Professor Emerita of Physics at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, where she directs the Institute for Religion and Science. She has written two books on Teilhard, including, most recently, “Teilhard's Struggle: Embracing the Work of Evolution” (Orbis). Sr. Kathy also guides retreats on topics related to Teilhard's life and work. Mike asked Sr. Kathy to introduce him to Teilhard's life and thought. Why does he continue to be so interesting to so many people today? And why is he controversial? Sr. Kathy talked about the relationship between faith and science, some key biographical moments in Teilhard's life that shaped his theology, and where readers new to his work might want to start. This week Ilia Delio joins me to discuss her new book "The Not-Yet God: Carl Jung, Teilhard de Chardin, and the Relational Whole". Delio proposes the new myth of relational holism; that is, the search for a new connection to divinity in an age of quantum physics, evolution, and pluralism. The idea of relational holism is one that is rooted in the God-world relationship, beginning with the Book of Genesis, but finds its real meaning in quantum physics and the renewed relationship between mind and matter. Our story, therefore, will traverse across the fields of science, scripture, theology, history, culture and psychology. Enjoy! Thomas Merton's epiphany on the corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets was a significant breakthrough into Christ consciousness and the opening up of what Raimon Panikkar calls, “Christophany.”  This new consciousness propelled an inversion of Merton's monastic life toward ever deepening relationships with a world of complexity. Relying on insights from Carl Jung, Raimon Panikkar and Teilhard de Chardin, I will explore Merton's Christophany as a radical theology, a mutational disruption of the Neoplatonic quest, and the ushering in of a new monastic consciousness reflective of the second axial age, marked by the hyperpersonal monk of planetary consciousness. Ilia Delio, OSF, PhD is a Franciscan Sister of Washington, DC and American theologian specializing in the area of science and religion, with interests in evolution, physics and neuroscience and the import of these for theology. In today's very special podcast we will re-air a discussion that was originally recorded and produced by our good friends at the East-West Psychology Department of the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) for their own program, the East-West Psychology Podcast (https://east-westpsychologypodcast.com/). The discussion itself is an introduction to a set of two conferences to be held at the California Institute of Integral Studies in celebration of “150 Years of Sri Aurobindo, the Pioneer of Integral Consciousness.” The conferences will take place over the course of a week, starting on September 23, 2023 and concluding on September 30. This discussion is hosted by the East-West Psychology Podcast producers, Stephen Julich and Jonathan Kay. In this conversation, Circle for Original Thinking host and current Jean Gebser Society president, Glenn Aparicio Parry is a guest, along with Debashish Banerji, Chairman of the East-West Psychology Department. We hope this program will provide our listeners with some background on these very important conferences, and the life and work of Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) who was the key figure in the development of a form of spiritual practice he called  “integral yoga,” as well as the life and work of the Swiss philosopher and visionary, Jean Gebser, author of the magnum opus, The Everpresent Origin. THE CONFERENCES: The first conference, “Sustainability and Contemplative Civilization: The Integral Vision of Sri Aurobindo,” organized by the East-West Psychology Department (EWP) and the Asian Contemplative and Transcultural Studies concentration (ACTS), will engage with the possibilities, problems and potential of a sustainable civilization based on a contemplative praxis of deep relationality and extended identity as implicit in the vision and teaching of Sri Aurobindo and as explicit in the experimental community of Auroville.   The second conference, “The Emergence of Integral Consciousness: Jean Gebser, Sri Aurobindo, Carl Jung, Teilhard De Chardin,” organized by the Jean Gebser Society, will address the coming integral age as foreseen by Gebser, Aurobindo, Jung, and Teilhard de Chardin. Each of these visionary thinkers in their own way foresaw the emergence of a new structure of consciousness beyond the limits of rational thought. Debashish Banerji is a Bengali scholar and Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and the Doshi Professor of Asian Art at CIIS. He is also the Program Chair for the East-West Psychology department. Prior to CIIS, he served as Professor of Indian Studies and Dean of Academics at the University of Philosophical Research in Los Angeles, CA.Stephen Julich is currently core faculty in the East-West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies where he teaches classes Jungian Depth Psychology and Western Mysticism, Magic and Esotericism.Jonathan Kay is a transcultural musician, and is currently a PhD student in the department of East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco under the mentorship of Dr. Debashish Banerji. We wish to again state our very deep gratitude to the people at the East-West Psychology Department and the California Institute of Integral Studies for the critical work that they do every day, and their generosity in sharing the content of this episode with Circle for Original Thinking. For more information about the conferences:https://www.ciis.edu/events/150-years-of-sri-aurobindo-pioneer-of-integral-consciousnessAlso please visit:https://www.ciis.edu/https://www.ciis.edu/academics/department-east-west-psychologyhttps://east-westpsychologypodcast.com/https://gebser.org/www.jonathankay.ca

Are you prepared to explore the insane heresies and dive into the controversial theories of Teilhard de Chardin and his recent rehabilitation by Pope Francis? Embark on this enlightening journey with our guest, Michael Hichborn, as we explore the profound impact of de Chardin's theories on the evolution of the universe and evolution of God, his contentious beliefs around Original Sin, and his encounter with the "spirit of the world" in the Ordos desert in Mongolia. We don't shy away from the big questions - was this encounter with the spirit demonic?Intrigued by the mythology of Pachamama, and its association with human sacrifice? We dig into the ancient practices and beliefs surrounding this deity, and the current perspectives of various individuals, including Pope Francis. Hichborn offers insights into a prayer to Pachamama, penned by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Italy, and we delve into the complex history of a former Catholic tribal leader who reintroduced banned tribal practices. We also illuminate the ties between these practices and the concepts of liberation theology and communism. The dialogue takes an unexpected turn as we connect the dots between modernist belief in the 'evolution of doctrine' and the transgender movement. We bring light to the symbolism of Lucifer as the first 'trans being' and its association with Pachamama. Examining the role of women in religion, we dive into the implications of the male-only priesthood, the influence of women in the Anglican Church, and the newest pastoral letter of Bishop Strickland. This conversation promises to be thought-provoking and engaging – you won't want to miss it.********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community:  https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comStore:  https://avoiding-babylon.sellfy.store/RSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV:  https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee:  https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!
