Thirteen years ago we had a chat after a Vague Angels show, now we're back at it on the mics and Chris Leo talks about how he first sang in a band with the former drummer of Agnostic Front, before starting his bands Native Nod and later The Van Pelt. He also tells me he wants to cover a freestyle song (this slightly trashy underground early 80s electronic dance music), why The Van Pelt broke up in 1997 and why they got back together in 2014, how he got signed to and then dropped by Matador Records, the process of writing lyrics and literature, and we talk about one of the best songs of the 90s, The Speeding Train. There's lots more, like how during the last days of Dangerous New York too many espressos made him discover open tunings, being in band and being a dad and of course we talk about the upcoming new Van Pelt album. Normally I complain about guggenheim and his need to defy expectations of fans. I actually liked it here. To many people Kevin Conroy is the definitive version of batman. One who never kills. To take this version and have him be a broken version similar to Dark Knight Returns Batman was not what I expected. And seeing Conroy pull off broken Batman both physically and mentally was quite the show. Teased me with Batman Beyond when referencing a Gotham from the future Smallville Didn't expect to get it. Like the nod to Lex as president Wish there had been more Alternate earth Mick is still delightful as is his babysitting Michelle  Tom Welling!!!! I know Sara said the Waverider jumped dimensions, but she has to be wrong. In Legends of Tomorrow S1E6, Sara meets future Oliver and he says: "30 years ago, you and Ray hopped on a spaceship, and you never came back." In Crisis Part One, they meet alternate Oliver, and he says: "You're dead. You... you went down with the Gambit." So, Earth-16 is an alternate Earth that's very similar to Star City 2046, but Sara actually died on the Gambit. She never got on the Amazo, joined the League, or came back to Star City. Today we have Chris Leo. He was in Native Nod, a band referenced often as an originator of screamo. Then he went on to form The Van Pelt that is well loved and should be mentioned a lot more than they are when you talk about the history of emo. On today's episode I talk to musician Chris Leo. Originally from New Jersey, Chris started playing music in the early 1990s with his brother Danny in the groundbreaking hardcore band Native Nod. When they broke up, Chris formed the post-rock band The Van Pelt, whose two albums - Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves and Sultans Of Sentiment - were released by NJ indie record label Gern Blandsten. Chris then formed The Lapse with Van Pelt member Toko Yasuda (also of Enon and Blonde Redhead) and then the Vague Angels.
