This week Drew talks to Amar Lohana, who founded the Toronto City Dads Group in 2017 when he became a stay-at-home dad. Amar's journey to fatherhood gave him a few surprises, while prompting him to explore how he wanted to define his fatherhood experience. Prior to becoming a stay-at-home dad Amar worked in New York at Goldman Sachs - one of the world's most prestigious investment banks. The transitions he's experieinced in going from a career in finance and technology to being a stay at home dad, growing his family, and now, being the founder of a media company haven't been easy, but he's learned a few lessons along the way that have helped him. Highlights from this conversation include: How Amar fathers very differently than his father parented him Why communication with his wife was so critical to working through the transitions they faced as parents The most important step he took to support himself through his various transitions About Amar Lohana Amar Lohana founded the Toronto Dads Group in 2017 when he became a stay-at-home dad. From one stay-at-home dad looking to connect to other dads, it has grown to a community of over 500 fathers who network, socialize, have fun, learn, and support each other as they navigate parenthood. The group is part of the larger City Dads Group network, which has chapters in most major metropolitan areas in the United States and eastern Canada. In addition to his work with the Toronto Dads Group, Amar founded Akelo Media, a documentary film production company, in 2020. Through Akelo Media, he creates thought-provoking films that explore important social and cultural issues. Prior to moving to Toronto, Amar worked for 15 years in technology and finance in New York City. He is a father of two. Craft Beer is its own festival In this episode of Dadhouse, the dads welcome 4 Hands Brewery Beer Ambassador Jeremy Danner to the show. It should be no surprise that five dads love talking about beer, and some of us have the bellies to prove it. What's the current craft beer scene look like and what kind of beer should you try to get into it? With a thousand different mixtures and flavors, there's something for everyone. Dadhouse tries to get into it, so join us as we talk about beer, beer, beer! Stay at home dad round up 3:12--Who knew that Mick has experience growing hops? Also, it surprises none of us. Jump in here to hear our Iowan farm boy talk about what makes beer, well, beer. Take a deep dive on the link and learn even more about the iconic plant. 3:44—It wouldn't be a Dadhouse episode without one of us picking a fight. In this case, Shannon and Larry have a few words for Mike. 5:00—The Dadhouse crew and their families went to the Kansas City Improv. They had a blast and Shannon took the stage to participate on a skit. And although he was nervous, what he was mostly worried about was if his pants were unzipped. We also want to give a shout out to Fat Sully's for seriously one of the biggest pizzas we have ever seen. 2 feet across and goes well with craft beer, just saying. 11:15—Take a minute to like, subscribe, and follow Dadhouse on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. 11:50—Before jumping into the topic, let's set the record straight. Every dad deserves support and the question we get asked the most is where to find friendships. City Dads Group and the National At-Home Dad organization are your first steps. We get this asked this so much, Shannon wrote an in depth article about the best places and ways to find your dad community. 14:54—We were lucky enough to go to HomeDadCon the last year and get advice from a great community. Here is this week's contribution from Alex. Craft beer talk with Jeremy Danner 17:42—Welcome to the show 4 Hands Brewery Beer Ambassador Jeremy Danner. Jeremy has worked in the beer world for years and no one knows the scene quite like him. Join us as he answers all the questions the dads have for him. As a father of 1, he loves to share what he knows with everyone. And take a minute to listen to his podcast I Love This Town, which is about Kansas City! 19:42—The craft beer environment can be intimidating as hell to get into. There is a fear that gatekeepers are ready to drop your man buns right on top of you. Turns out this isnt' the case at all as Jeremy answers the first question: Where do you even start? And what better place than trying some brews from 4 Hands. 23:29—How does it work when a specialty beer is made? Is there a starting barrel count or do you just brew away? 24:47—And speaking of how we make beer, how do you market it? Is there any market research conducted? This is the ins and outs of the process that fascinate Shannon 30:02—Are you looking for an introductory beer? Jeremy Danner has you covered here. 31:00—One of the great moments of HomeDadCon was the beer exchange where dads from all over the country brought their best local beers to share. 36:07—Does Jeremy share his hobbies and passion with his kids? There is a science behind the crafting and it's enough to get any inquisitive kid intrigued. 38:58—What's the difference between a pale ale, and IPA and all the other types of beers? This is one of those beginner questions that need an answer. 42:14—4 Hands Brewery does some fantastic charity work and their City Wide Mission initiative has rasied hundreds of thousands of dollars for non-profits in the St. Louis area. These are the kind of companies we can all get behind. Time for the Dadhouse 5 47:41—It's time for the Dadhouse 5! The questions we ask to check your dadness! Plus, Mick comes up with an extra one. A special thank you to Jeremy Danner and 4 Hand Brewery company for having a laugh wi...
It's traditionally been mothers who have had to take time off work to look after children. But in the past two years, the pandemic has accelerated a huge shift towards many more fathers wanting to play an active role in family life. In this episode of Working It, we look at the fast-moving changes in workplace parental leave trends - and what that means for mothers, fathers - and the co-workers who pick up the slack.Isabel talks to Matt Schneider, co-founder of the US-based City Dads Group, about why paternity leave matters - and the barriers that still stand in men's way. Are we really still hard-wired to think about men as breadwinners and women as caregivers? Then she discusses why paternity leave matters more than ever in the current hot labour market, with FT management editor and Working It regular Andrew Hill. If the older, male, leaders in organisations take a dim view of younger colleagues taking paternity leave, do they risk losing them to other companies with a more forward-thinking culture? And we find out that equality for men in this area might just be the key to women's advancement - and even help to close the gender pay gap.Want to read more?Join a City Dads Group in the US https://citydadsgroup.com/The FT's Emma Jacobs on family leave policies as the key to staff retention https://www.ft.com/content/b14b4e7a-e87d-4aee-a267-8100661e4b57France doubles paternity leave https://www.ft.com/content/36efc7ea-9deb-489a-ac82-97138b7b34f5McKinsey survey on paternity leave and why it matters https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/a-fresh-look-at-paternity-leave-why-the-benefits-extend-beyond-the-personalWe love to hear from you. Before co-founding City Dads Group, Matt Schneider and Lance Somerfeld were enrolled in extreme parenthood training as elementary school teachers in the South Bronx. Since 2008, they've built their two-person weekly meetups into a network of 20,000 dads in 41 North American cities, creating opportunities for fathers of every type to gather and share experiences. We talk about the strategies behind their brand relationships, the challenges they've faced as "flex-caregivers" during lockdown, and the weird feeling of visiting museums with your kids and feeling like an exhibit.

Matt Schneider is a stay-at-home dad and Wharton alumnus who founded the City Dads Group, a diverse community of more than 8,000 fathers in 26 cities across the United States who are supporting each other and redefining what it means to be a dad in the 21st century. It’s the largest organized community of fathers in the United States. Matt works with reporters, commercial brands, and entertainment companies to encourage more accurate and positive portrayals of fathers and fatherhood in media and advertising. He also hosts the Modern Dads Podcast. In this episode, Matt shares his experience as a stay-at-home dad and tells the story of founding the City Dads Group. Even though male caregivers are becoming increasingly common and accepted throughout America, Matt found it difficult to find a male peer group to talk about parenting, and that’s what led to his creating the City Dads Group. Matt and Stew explore important topics related to successful male caregiving, including how to clarify expectations with your spouse about domestic responsibilities. In the second half of the conversation, listeners share their inspiring experiences as stay-at-home dads. Show Notes (times when new topics start) 3:43: Founding the City Dads Group. Matt founded the City Dads Group nine years ago with the help of Lance Somerfield. He is a stay-at-home father who has two kids. 30:24: Edgar’s story. A radio show listener describes what it’s been like for him as an African American stay-at-home dad. 37:57: Negotiating parental responsibilities. Stew and Matt discuss how couples have to continually talk about how they’re allocating parental responsibilities. Matt emphasizes the importance of agreeing on performance standards, such as the operational definition of a “clean” room. 42:31: Kelly’s story. Another listener shares compelling advice to fathers based on his experience as a stay-at-home dad. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building
Today's guest is first and foremost a dad. What began as a small playgroup in 2008 became the NYC Dads Group and in 2013 expanded into the City Dads Group network with 26 groups across the country. This diverse community supports dads of all stripes, providing opportunities to socialize as they navigate parenthood together. In addition to co-founding these groups, he co-hosts The Modern Dads Podcast, a monthly show highlighting stories of 21st-century dads and families. He regularly contributes to and is quoted by media outlets interested in telling the stories of involved dads. As an at-home dad myself, I was grateful to discover this network of involved fathers existed and have become actively involved with the Boston Dads Group. I had an opportunity to meet my guest in person at HomeDadCon, hosted by the National At-Home Dad Network. Please join me in welcoming Matt Schneider. In this episode we explore: how he defines leadership, “Seeing an opportunity to make change and taking it. Having the wherewithal to step in.” what is holding dads back from being full parents the effort to change the media's portrayal of dads how he scaled his hyper-local playgroup to a national movement ways he found to monetize as the group has grown balancing being an at-home dad and entrepreneur Listen, subscribe, and read show notes at www.OntheSchmooze.com - episode 41.
City Dads Group co-founder Matt Schneider is the featured podcast guest this week. In our conversation, Matt and I talk about how he and Lance Somerfeld started City Dads Group in New York City after finding a lack of opportunities for dads to hang out together and learn from each other. We also talk about how quickly City Dads Group has grown across the country and how to be a part of the group. Because City Dads Group was started by two stay-at-home dads, I also ask Matt about being a stay-at-home dad, about how dads can maintain their identity if they choose to stay at home and how they can continue to be encouraging to their spouses.
Dads from our City Dads Group community share their stories of raising tweens and teens. Author Whit Honea talks through the struggles he had with his 11-year old son and the teacher that gave too much homework. Teacher and writer Seth Taylor worries about his daughter's classmates' reaction to her very public support of the gay community At-home dad and writer Vincent O'Keefe recalls his reaction to the moment his tween became a teen. Leadership coach and speaker Devon Bandison remembers a moment that he knew his 15-year old son was watching his every move. Blogger and photographer Jeff Bogle encourages dads to embrace being fathers of daughters.
It's Movember, and City Dads Group has once again joined forces with Life of Dad, Dad 2.0, and the National At-Home Dad Network to grow mustaches and raise money and awareness for men's health. Movember Foundation Director of Development JJ Owens joins to talk about why this annual campaign is so important. We also talk about the research and development that is saving lives, and how your donations are used. Whit Honea joins to talk about his own health scare and his newfound perspective. If you are moved to support our #MovemberDads team, consider donating to our team.
To celebrate our 50th episode, we asked New York Family Magazine Editor Eric Messinger to turn the tables by interviewing us about the future of fatherhood and the future of City Dads Group. We talk about the changing expectations of dads, the growth of our community, and what's next in the world of fathers. The Parents Phrase Book author Whit Honea joins in at the end to talk about what having a community of dads has meant to him.
More than ever, fathers are caring for their children, tending to domestic chores, and providing for their family financially. In this episode of The Modern Dads Podcast, we feature a recent webinar City Dads Group organized with our friends at A Better Balance, a work and family advocacy center. Experts talk about how employer policies and legal rules interact to offer support to men as they consider starting a family, taking paternity leave, asking for a flexible schedule, and caring for sick kids. The Working Dad's Survival Guide author Scott Behson discusses the stigma of prioritizing family, and what resources are available to assist dads in becoming our own best advocates in the workplace. Special thanks to our friends at The Handsome Father, Dad 2.0 Summit, and Life of Dad for co-sponsoring the webinar.
Lance Somerfeld, Co-Founder of the City Dads Group joins the podcast to talk about modern fatherhood, stay at home dads, and the changing image of what it means to be a dad, and the Dad 2.0 Summit (and how brands are trying to reach the new dad market.) Plus we talk about how to unplug and be more present for your kids and our bytes of the week!
