As fathers, we are under more pressure than ever when it comes to raising our children and being the examples for them we should. The role of fatherhood is constantly changing, and what used to be the norm is no longer the case. How can we care for our mental health to ensure we can give the best care to our children? What resources are out there for the father that is struggling? In this episode, Matt, Steve, and Jessica will have a conversation with Jason Dunnigan, better known as The Modern Dad on Instagram. His Instagram handle, the_modern_dad, is an ode to his message and belief that dads need to be more involved in their children’s lives than they traditionally have been. While he’s an expert social media marketer and runs global social media accounts for a craft company, his true passion lies in being a husband and father. He is married with four children, and is known for his love of shopping, fashion, and all things family focused.Jason will hilariously share his great story about learning to love himself and being an awesome dad and husband. They will all start off by sharing what they’ve been going through with the effects that the Coronavirus related shutdowns have had on their personal lives. Jason’s journey started in Elementary school where he got teased a lot and the other kids thought he was gay because he liked jumping rope with the girls instead of playing with the boys. He wasn’t so much into most of the things that boys were into and that put a lot of social pressure on him because people kept saying mean things about him, and he just couldn’t understand what made people think of him that way when he was just being himself and enjoying it. That continued all through into his late teens until at one point when he got sick of it and decided to move to California where he experienced so much acceptance that he figured out all he needed to do is not care what anyone else thought of him, and just love and accept himself as he was. Now, Jason is the perfect example of what it means to live your best life by being true to who you are. Stay tuned as he shares how he got to the point of owning who he is and how that set him free, so you can apply the same to set yourself free from the confines of caring too much about what other people think of you.Highlights of the Discussion: Matt’s worst nightmare dressing rooms (02:19)Why Jason calls himself The Modern Dad (04:11)Knowing the comfort of leggings and doing the single ladies dance in a custom made leotard and heels (08:12)Having to still go to work despite being in a digital oriented position (12:57)How Jason learned to accept who he was and love himself (15:17)The biggest misconception that people had about him (22:30)Crazies of getting married at 30 and Jason’s opinion on online dating (26:15)The detriment of getting so caught up in who everybody else thinks we're supposed to be (34:16)Helping people accept and love themselves (43:24)Additional Resources:Jason “The Modern Dad” on Instagramwww.Linktr.ee/TheBoldLogic--Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook!--You can find the podcast on Apple, Google, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts. If you haven’t already, please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts!

Let's be honest, when it comes down to out-dated preconceived ideas of how useless and hands off dad's are, it's time for a much needed update. I get it though, according to my mum, my dad changed a whopping three nappies in his life. And as a kid, I don't remember him being around that much because he either was at the office or in his music room rehearsing with his jazz band. It doesn't mean he wasn't a loving father though. It just means he was living in a different era. And let's face it, got away with murder… But when I look at my older brother and I, along with all of my other male friends who happen to be dads, it's a completely different story. That's right, Millennial dads are a different breed. We are more involved, we cook a lot more for our families and we change a truck load of nappies. It's a generalisation, sure, but as you'll hear in today's episode, there's actually a study to back this statement up. That's right, say hello to Dad Index 2018: “The Dad Index is the first piece of research exclusively focussed on millennial dads across the whole of Great Britain; their involvement in parenting activities, and their role as consumers.” Turns out, according to this latest study, 87% of Millennial Dads are heavily involved in day to day parenting, more than 2/3 of dads are involved in cooking for their children during the week, and almost 40% are taking charge of the grocery shop. That's why I was so pumped to sit down this week with Han-Son Lee, founder of Daddilife, a website for modern dads counting 100k+ followers online who also happens to be the man behind the Dad Index 2018 study. We talked about what it means to be a modern dad, why men are going through a bit of an identity crisis right now (and what to do about it), why we need to be more progressive at work with parent leave and why we should be excited or terrified of the world our children will grow up in. Being unconventional means having the courage to do things differently. And I truly believe that we are changing the course of history by being more involved as dads, at home. If you enjoyed our powerful conversation, or would like to add to the conversation, please make sure to tag me (@markleruste) and Han-Son (@daddilife) over on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. Fatherhood is one of life’s greatest responsibilities, and yet so many of us feel completely unequipped for the role. Many first time and long time dads find it difficult to engage with their children, or otherwise feel overwhelmed with the pressures of work. How can we begin to redefine Fatherhood, and start building up intentional relationships with our kids? Luckily, we have places like Daddy Saturday to turn to. I’m talking to Justin Batt, Chief Daddy at Daddy Saturday, about how he has transformed his relationship with his kids, even as a working parent.    Daddy Saturday is a website dedicated to building resources and communities for fathers. It started when Justin’s oldest daughter was born, and he found himself being the sole caregiver on Saturdays while Mom was at work. These Saturdays with his kids became precious as he intentionally planned ways to have quality time, rather than simply checking out on his phone or becoming preoccupied with work. Now, he and his children are having grand adventures and encouraging people from across the world to do the same.    Justin is going to share all of his tips for Dads who want to transform their relationships with their kids. While it does require a mindset shift and a commitment to put the phone down, building intentional relationships with kids is incredibly easy. Fatherlessness is currently in a state of crisis, but Dads like Justin are trying to take back Saturday and encourage Dads to engage and take ownership of their responsibility. Yes, life and technology have their pressures and influences, but Justin is going to show us how easily we can build habits that will impact our children for a lifetime.   More in this episode:  •    Being intentional and engaging with his kids on a Saturday became a community phenomenon.  •    How Justin is encouraging other dads to change how they approach their weekends with kids.  •    Fatherhood is a huge responsibility, but it’s also an opportunity.  •    Be there for your kids during breakfast, or any other rallying point.  •    Questions you can use to engage your kids.  •    Why experiencing failure as kids can make strong adults.  •    Justin tells the story of how he and his wife became business partners and life partners.  •    Advice for Dads who want to start being more intentional.  •    What is launching next for Justin and Daddy Saturday?  •    A little bit of planning makes a world of difference.  •    How to engage your kids as they get older.  •    Focus on peak performance in our parenting, not just our career or our health.  •    Learn all the nuts and bolts of how Justin runs Daddy Saturday.  •    Sometimes, low-tech is best.   Links  Daddy Saturday   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSppCEe24NP3sJEVqaQq_DA   The Modern Dad’s Dilemma

You believe in your vocation or career that your time and energy is important, but you also believe in your responsibilities as a parent. How can you find a balance between the two? Can you follow your career or civic passions while still showing up as a parent? There are also more expectations put on parents than ever before. Between career and that social pressure, it can feel like you are burning the candle at both ends.  This is exactly why I am so excited to have my friend Will Mount on the show today. He gets the pressure. He feels the burden of wanting to care for his son well, while also pursuing a job as an attorney for Juvenile Defense. Social justice is important to both Will and his wife, but they also feel the weight of these unmet expectations. In this episode, Will will share what has worked for his family, how he has created his priorities to serve his family, and which challenges were particularly difficult for him.    You are not alone! Let Will’s story be an example of how to make it work as a working parent.    More in this episode:  Why would someone want to work with Will or his law partner Judith?  What it is like to be a parent with a high-stress job.  Will and his wife both have work they believe in, but balancing that with parental responsibility is important.  Battling expectations of our society and the impact on our parenting.  Each age has their own challenges.  Take time out to take care of yourself and your spouse/significant other.  How having Liam has affected Will’s work life.  Find opportunities to bond with your child.  The surprising benefits of raising a child.  Why having good people around you makes all the difference.      Links:  http://dzmlegal.com/ The Modern Dad’s Dilemma

More than ever, fathers are caring for their children, tending to domestic chores, and providing for their family financially. In this episode of The Modern Dads Podcast, we feature a recent webinar City Dads Group organized with our friends at A Better Balance, a work and family advocacy center. Experts talk about how employer policies and legal rules interact to offer support to men as they consider starting a family, taking paternity leave, asking for a flexible schedule, and caring for sick kids.   The Working Dad's Survival Guide author Scott Behson discusses the stigma of  prioritizing family, and what resources are available to assist dads in becoming our own best advocates in the workplace.   Special thanks to our friends at The Handsome Father, Dad 2.0 Summit, and Life of Dad for co-sponsoring the webinar.
