In Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden From Us, best selling writer Anna Malaika Tubbs reveals the secret history of American patriarchal values. Tubbs argues this patriarchy is the central narrative thread of American history. She emphasizes that patriarchy affects everyone differently according to their race, class, and gender - thereby creating a "gendered hierarchy" that excludes many from traditional gender roles. Tubbs maintains that this patriarchy persists. Indeed, she presents the Trump administration's Project 2025 as a reactionary attempt to return to this central narrative of American history. Five Key Takeaways * American patriarchy was intentionally built into the nation's founding documents, with women deliberately excluded from the Constitution. This systemic design continues to influence modern American society and politics.* Patriarchy affects different groups in varying ways—white women experience oppression differently than women of color, who historically weren't even afforded the "protections" of traditional gender roles. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for building effective coalitions.* Agency is central to resistance against patriarchal systems. Throughout history, marginalized groups have consistently demonstrated alternative ways of living despite systemic constraints.* Current political movements like Project 2025 represent a conscious return to traditional patriarchal values, particularly in their emphasis on women's reproductive roles.* According to Tubbs, addressing patriarchy requires multi-level approaches: personal reflection, reimagining relationships, mindful parenting, and policy change. Understanding how patriarchy operates helps explain voting patterns and can inform strategies for social change.Anna Malaika Tubbs is a New York Times bestselling author and multidisciplinary expert on current and historical understandings of race, gender, and equity. With a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge in addition to a Bachelors in Medical Anthropology from Stanford University, Anna translates her academic knowledge into stories that are clear and engaging. Her articles have been published by TIME Magazine, New York Magazine, CNN, Motherly, the Huffington Post, For Harriet, The Guardian, Darling Magazine, and Blavity. Anna's storytelling also takes form in her talks, including her TED Talk that has been viewed 2 million times, as well as the scripted and unscripted screen projects she has in development. This series is produced by Veronica Charnell Media. Anisa is Trinidadian born, now New York based singer-songwriter who has stepped out of the box of traditional gospel music and creates music from life experiences that we all can relate to. Anisa's focus is the world at large - in the church and more importantly, out of the church. Having experienced failures on every scale, she can effectively relate to issues real people deal with and looks for every opportunity to encourage both the young and old to pick themselves back up and never give up or give in. Her message is "you are not your mistakes.” In December of 2020 Anisa joined forces with RNU Records, an independent gospel label founded by Joshua Arnoux in the same year. The two have been unstoppable ever since. Their first two singles together: “You Reign” and “Covered” are anthems of God's goodness that they've been traveling around the country ministering to and inspiring people to praise God through every situation. You Reign was nominated for the Maranatha Rhema Awards as ‘Best Gospel Praise Song of the Year' (2021). Along with that nomination, Anisa also received nominations for ‘Female Gospel Artist of the Year', ‘Outstanding Female Worship Leader', and ‘Outstanding Motivational Speaker'. Since its release, Covered has been rising on the Billboard Gospel charts and has maintained a steady spot in the top 20 category of Billboard's Gospel Indicator chart for over 30 weeks and held the #2 spot for four of those weeks before the chart closed in 2022. On July 15, 2022 Anisa's first EP with RNU Records entitled ‘Anisa – The Next Chapter' was released. This EP takes you on a journey of worship and praise and even a bit of biblical teaching that is sure to captivate the listener. Her story of resilience after church hurt and a broken marriage has birthed this new chapter that she's sharing with the world that God is a healer and a restorer. So even as we reimagine our younger selves now and engage with that essence and energy and help leverage it as best we can that she gets to grow and evolve and morph as we're growing, evolving, and morphing. It's not like this static thing. I think that that's really important because that speaks to the beauty and the messiness of it all.” - Monique R. Shields“Legacy is less about generational wealth and what's the hand down, and what are the things that we sort of get as part of being tied to someone else's legacy. Really, it's just like, are we leaving this place any better than we found it and can the people who are left to tell our story actually articulate that? Did we live a life that our values, that our beliefs, that our actions are aligned to all those things that we said that we cared about? Did people feel better after being in my presence and being around me than they did not being around? Did I honor people who would otherwise be forgotten and not let to work and other things sort of distract from those moments where you can pull in people into the fabric of how we live today. In my mind, that's the legacy. That's how I'm thinking about it today. I'm also open to the idea of what that looks like continuing to mature and evolve with me and how I sort of see the babies keeping and thinking about legacy, because that will also matter. But for right now, it's keeping things alive that I think matter at the end.” - Tamyra Gordon STAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so se

Once you hear the biblical text and understand that the Bible satirizes and dismantles the arrogance and foolishness of war, political schemes, government powers, and the absurdity of any ruling authority, you can't hear the Old Testament without bursting into laughter, the way that God laughs at us. The gift of biblical satire—with all its fury—is true freedom from the historical tyranny of the hell that surrounds us. Thank God that God judges and condemns us in the Bible. Only a monster would bless the monsters we are: men and women who do such monstrous things in his name, using his book, which lays out the epic parables of our monstrous forbears, whose legacy we are so desperate to manifest as our “new” destiny in West Asia. I challenge all of you to find one inch of Western society that hasn't been coopted, sold, or sold itself out to slogans or navel-gazing. “What does it really mean that anyone can buy and sell activist discourse? Besides the trivialization of real issues…it is unclear who has claim to and who is profiting from this commodification. Think about all of the BLM merch sold on the website Etsy.com. On this site, anyone who makes anything can sell it. That being said, it is hard to know exactly who you are buying from on this site and where the money is going. I clicked on one seller with the username thewomenstore and saw that next to a shirt that read “Black Lives Matter” was a shirt that read “Tequila is Gluten Free.” … Are these phrases, priced the same, equally as important? Did this seller simply add a Black Lives Matter shirt to her collection because she knew it would sell?” — jaenichelle, Blavity.comThere are signs of hope, always, but we can count on our Western institutions to fight against them in the name of the almighty dollar. After all, our institutions were established by David and administered by Absalom. Ah, yes, “A student is not above his teacher.”This week, I discuss Luke 6:39-40.Show Notesע-ו-ר (ʿayin-waw-resh) / ع-و-ر (ʿayn-waw-ra)In Arabic, the word أَعْوَر ( 'a‘war) means “one-eyed” or “having one eye.” עִוֵּר corresponds to τυφλός in Luke 6:39, which also appears in Romans 2:19. פ-ח-ת (pe-ḥet-taw)פַּ֫חַת—pit; ravineThe corresponding term βόθυνος (bothynos) does not appear in the New Testament, except in some Greek manuscripts where it onlyappears in Luke 6:39. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This week on The Journey, Morgan DeBaun welcomes Dr. Uché Blackstock, a Black female physician and author of her newly released book, Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine, for a conversation on health disparities in the Black community. The conversation kicks off with Dr. Uché sharing the inspiring story of her mother's journey to becoming a doctor and how the presence of other Black women doctors influenced Dr. Uché's own path in the medical field. She and Morgan delve into the themes of Dr. Uché's new book, exploring the challenges faced by Black physicians and the historical impacts on health outcomes for Black people. Morgan and Dr. Uché discuss various health disparities within the Black community, from the lack of standardized care for patients with sickle cell disease to alarming statistics on Black maternal mortality rates. Dr. Uché explains the role of chronic stress due to racism and issues within the medical community in perpetuating patterns of poor health outcomes amongst Black individuals. She also expresses concern over the trend of health outcomes for Black people worsening instead of improving over the last few years. While the conversation can feel frustrating and hopeless at times, Dr. Uché and Morgan provide insight into how focusing on local community health as well as better practices in health leadership and education can be the key to dismantling systemic barriers in healthcare. At the end of the episode, Morgan makes a commitment to reexamine Blavity's parental leave, and she encourages every listener to commit to being a part of the change as well. After you listen, make sure to reach out and share what action you are taking to make your community a healthier, safer place for people of color!
