The sailors, their captains, abolitionists, and British diplomatic agents protested this treatment. Today we have a certain idea of “race”; it’s socially constructed, conventional, and not really biological-grounded in any sense. Yet we commonly use the idea of “race” in our everyday lives to identify ourselves and others. We even have a typology of “races” that we use in official contexts. According to most experts, boys have more trouble in schools than girls. Further, African-American boys have even more trouble than, say, white boys. What to do? In Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (SUNY Press, 2018), Vanessa Valdés recovers the important legacy of the man whose name, collection, and activism are now attached forever to the legacies of the African Diaspora.
