Hey family, every now and again, when churches work together, they have an opportunity to be able to influence each other and help each other grow in the kingdom of God. That's been happening with our church, and tomorrow morning it's happening in an interesting way. We're having a pulpit swap. Pulpit swap is when a pastor comes from another church and I go to their church and they preach in our church and I preach in their church, and we hope that all the people are blessed as a result. So this Sunday we want to welcome David Lee, pastor of First Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. We're excited to have him at our church, and I'm excited to go preach at his church. Please come! Bring and friend and hear the gospel! We meet at 10 a.m. at 360 Schermerhorn in downtown Brooklyn. Kids' church starts at 10 a.m. as well for children ages 4-12. --Edwin

Dr. J Calvin Schermerhorn is a professor of history in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His books include The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860, and Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery. He lives in Tempe, AZ. The long history of the racial wealth gap in America told through the stories of seven Black families who struggled to build wealth over multiple generationsWealth is central to the American pursuit of happiness and is an overriding measure of well-being. Yet wealth is conspicuously absent from African American households. Why do some 3.5 million Black American families have zero or negative wealth? In The Plunder of Black America: How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made (Yale UP, 2025) historian Calvin Schermerhorn traces four hundred years of Black dispossession and decapitalization—what Frederick Douglass called plunder—through the stories of families who have strived to earn and keep the fruits of their toils. Their struggles reveal that the ever-evolving strategies to strip Black income and wealth have been critical to sustaining a structure of racialized disadvantage. These accounts also tell of the quiet heroism of those who worked to overcome obstacles and defy the plunder. From the story of Anthony and Mary Johnson, abducted from Angola and brought to Virginia in 1619, to the enslaved Black workers dispossessed by the Custis-Washington family, to Venture Smith (born Broteer Furro), who purchased his freedom, to three generations of a family enslaved in the South who moved north after Emancipation, to the Tulsa massacre and the subprime lending crisis, Schermerhorn shows that we cannot reckon with today's racial wealth inequality without understanding its unrelenting role in American history. Despite the propaganda that Black people have less wealth due to poor choices, laziness, and missed opportunities, Dr. Schermerhorn points us to the historical data that clearly demonstrating that Black Americans have been continuously and systematically exploited and de-capitalized through racist laws, racial violence, and outright theft. We also examine Malcolm X's vision for economically independent and vibrant Black communities and the extent to which integration distracted us from building and maintaining wealth within our own communities. At the heart of New York's Gilded Age — the late 19th-century era of unprecedented American wealth and excess — were families with the names Astor, Waldorf, Schermerhorn, and Vanderbilt, alongside power players like A.T. Stewart, Jay Gould and William “Boss” Tweed. They would all make their homes — and in the case of the Vanderbilts, their great many homes — on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. The image of Fifth Avenue as a luxury retail destination today grew from the street's aristocratic reputation in the 1800s. The rich were inextricably drawn to the avenue as early as the 1830s when rich merchants, anxious to be near the exquisite row houses of Washington Square Park, began turning it into an artery of expensive abodes. In this podcast, Tom and Greg present a world that's somewhat hard to imagine — free-standing mansions in an exclusive corridor running right through the center of Manhattan. Why was Fifth Avenue fated to become the domain of the so-called “Upper Ten”? And what changed about the city in the 20th century to ensure the eventual destruction of most of them? The following is a re-edited, remastered version of two past Bowery Boys shows — the Rise and Fall of the Fifth Avenue Mansion. Combined, this tells the whole story of Fifth Avenue, from the initial development of streets in the 1820s to its Midtown transformation into a mecca of high-end shopping in the 1930s. This could also serve as a primer to the HBO series The Gilded Age, the official podcast co-hosted by Tom Meyers! You can listen to the Official Gilded Age Podcast on all audio podcast players as well as YouTube. For even more Gilded Age tales, check out The Gilded Gentleman Podcast.

This Sunday, we’re asking a question most of us never stop to consider: Who’s really leading your life? Whether it’s culture, comfort, a relationship, or even your own voice, something is shaping your direction. But what happens when life gets hard, we make some bad choices or maybe have to start over again? Jesus makes a stunning claim in John 10. Not just that He’s a guide—but that He’s the Shepherd who stays, sacrifices, and knows you completely. Join us as we look at a love that doesn’t run, and a voice that can be trusted. We meet at 10 a.m. on Sundays, 360 Schermerhorn. Kids' Church starts at 10 a.m. as well for ages 5-12. --Edwin

family, I hope you'll invite a friend this Sunday when we continue our brand-new series, The Jesus I Never Knew. All of us have seen those game shows where the contestant has to pick either door #1, door #2, or door #3. Usually there's a wonderful prize behind one door and something not so wonderful behind the other two. Since we're all familiar with doors being a way to either great treasure or terrible disappointment, it's interesting when Jesus says about himself, "I am the door." He's speaking to the desperate needs we all have in our lives--for security, salvation, satisfaction, and more. He's a door that we all need to walk through and trust. I look forward to seeing all of you at 360 Schermerhorn. Church for adults and for kids ages 5-12 starts at 10 a.m. --Edwin

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Calvin Schermerhorn. Classified as a White Man and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and the University of Virginia, Schermerhorn is a historian of slavery, capitalism, and African American inequality. Weeks ago, he penned a piece deconstructing the local System of White Supremacy that's responsible for hundreds of black homeowners having their housing jeopardized or destroyed by the 2025 California Wildfires. One of the locations with a high population of non-white residents is the “unincorporated” region of Altadena, an area prone to fires yet reserved for non-white people. All of this fits neatly into the massive economic patterns Schermerhorn inspects in his 2025 publication: The Plunder of Black America How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made. This text examines how generations of Whites have codified the looting of black people. A major component of this Racist codification is keeping black people ignorant and illiterate. Professor Schermerhorn documents how White people across the continent create laws, burn black school houses, and/or loot educational funds designated for black children all with the desired aim of maintaining a mindless, vulnerable population of black people who will be dominated in perpetuity. #MoneyDontMatterTonight #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
