Marilyn Nissim-Sabat and Neil Roberts have edited a new collection of essays, Creolizing Hannah Arendt. This edited volume dives into Hannah Arendt's thinking while also pushing the understanding and ways that Arendt has influenced political theory, philosophy, and politics. The idea of “creolizing,” especially philosophic or theoretical work, is to explore a thinker's work from more pluralistic perspectives, often pushing the ideas and their analysis beyond the northern and western position in which that work was generally created. Arendt's work, which comes to us in a number of forms, was written in the context of the Holocaust and the world before and after that trauma. The contributing authors to Creolizing Hannah Arendt build on Arendt's considerations and analysis, taking and applying her work to other situations, to determine what we can learn in a distinct situation or in context of other theoretical frameworks. Creolizing is an engagement where two or more elements come into discourse with each other, rethinking the ways those in western political thought are positioned, or see the world. This process questions, on some level, the entire notion of the “canon” and the design of borders that hem in thinking, or disciplinary lines. Creolizing Hannah Arendt is a sophisticated collection of essays that brings forth Hannah Arendt's thinking about freedom and individuals while also integrating other theorists who have interpreted Arendt's work over the last century. Arendt focused some of her early work on the notion of being an outsider, of having a kind of double consciousness (for her, it was her Jewish identity in Europe during the Holocaust and afterwards in the United States.) But double consciousness was originally posited as an understanding and perspective by W.E.B. Dubois and Sylvia Wynter in their work, specifically the experience of African Americans, and that Paget Henry analyzes in the chapter “Sylvia Wynter, Political Philosophy, and the Creolization of Hannah Arendt.” Thus, putting these ideas in conversation with each other is an example of creolization, and an example of the kind of analysis in this edited volume. This is a fascinating book, opening up spheres of thinking not just about Arendt, but about so many other important theorists. And putting these ideas into conversation with each other. Creolizing Hannah Arendt does not intend to proselytize on behalf of Hannah Arendt, as Nissim-Sabat and Roberts note in our conversation, but to truly interact act with Arendt's thinking and her ideas about freedom and unfreedom, double consciousness, revolution, and the concept of humanity. In this episode, Paul sits down with Neil Roberts.Roberts started his career in 1994 when he played for Wrexham. After signing for the club as a trainee, he made his debut on 27 September 1997 during a 0–0 draw with Chesterfield before going on to score five goals in his next four games. He became an established first-team player at the Racecourse Ground, making 75 appearances and scoring 17 goals. He left Wrexham in 2000 to join Wigan Athletic, where he made 125 appearances and scoring 19 goals. He also spent time on loan at Hull City and Bradford City, scoring on his debut for the latter against Bristol City. He then made a permanent move to Doncaster Rovers in 2004.In 2006 Roberts came back to his hometown club Wrexham, where he became the team captain. He is a Welsh international with four caps. Roberts had a good start to the 2006–07 season by scoring two goals in the first two games. These goals were very important during this period as they were a penalty in a 2–1 away victory against local rivals Chester City on 20 August 2006 and the opening goal in Wrexham's 4–1 League Cup victory at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on 23 August 2006.However, in their 2–1 victory against Swindon Town on 9 September 2006, Roberts picked up an injury. He made his comeback in a 2–1 defeat against Milton Keynes Dons scoring the opening goal. However, Roberts suffered more injuries throughout the course of the season. On 21 April 2007 he came on as a second-half substitute in a game against Torquay United and scored his first goal since October 2006 and Wrexham's winning goal to ensure a vital 1–0 win in Wrexham's bid for survival in the Football League Two. He was released by Wrexham in May 2008 following the club's relegation to the Football Conference.[6]On 24 June 2008, Roberts signed for Welsh Premier League side Rhyl, where he combined playing with coaching opportunities and his business interests. After one season at Rhyl, Roberts left to take over as a project manager at Premier League side Manchester CityFollow us on Instagram, YouTube & Twitter - @UpTheTownShow

His Hawaiian mother was a notable Hula Dancer, and his Arkansas born father was a multi-instrumentalist that loved Country Music. It was a foregone conclusion that Kimo would someday be in the music industry. He started playing in bands with his dad at the age of 12, shortly after learning the guitar. It was this early exposure to making music that lit his fire.Kimo met band mates Monty DeVita in elementary school, and James Blaylock in High School, and with some member changes over the years, they became one of the top country bands on the West Coast in the early 90's.Kimo moved to Nashville, TN in 1994, and quickly found himself immersed in the scene. He ran a successful demo recording studio out of his home and began touring with many great artists, including David Lee Murphy, John Michael Montgomery and Country Music Hall of Fame Members, Alabama, whom he still tours with today. However, he knew his bond with his musical brothers, Monty and James, would always be his focus and passion. Kimo feels Cash Creek has just begun to communicate their message, and they have so much more to say..
Neil Roberts is Professor of Africana Studies and Faculty Affiliate in Political Science and Religion at Williams College. He's working on a new book titled How To Live Free in an Age of Pessimism. We discuss the legacy of Charles Mills' scholarship on the racial contract, freedom, and transforming society from the bottom up. Racial Contract White supremacy has shaped modern society in ways that may not be immediately obvious. Charles Mills proposes in the Racial Contract that we've operated under the assumption that rights belong to whites and are theirs to give away. By changing our conceptions about the racial contract and, in turn, racism, we can work towards constructing a new approach towards living free in our democracy. Living Free Living free isn't simply the lack of enslavement. In our world, social and political orders are constantly changing, creating new dynamics of subjugation. If we choose to think of freedom outside of the context of enslavement, then living free requires the individual to grow a sense of awareness of their surroundings and the political system they exist in. For example, suffrage is a hallmark of a democratic and free society. Positive and Negative FreedomsPositive notions of freedom are about the visions of freedom that are desired in a body politic, such as autonomy or plurality. In the first of a daily series of London International Shipping Week Podcasts, Lloyd’s List Editor Richard Meade dissects the current sanctions risk facing shipping with the help of Lloyd’s list’s tanker tracker in chief Michelle Wiese Bockmann and input from the panel of experts pulled together to talk at Lloyd’s List’s Transparency in Shipping Forum xxxxxx Shipping is still an opaque business, but the forensic attention of state actors seeking to sanction the activities of Iran, Syria and North Korea to name but a few of the current crop of targets, means that is changing, whether we like it or not. The premise of the Lloyd’s List Transparency forum was that shipping’s corporate veil is being pierced by ever more stringent financial and regulatory compliance requirements. Today’s podcast – the first of a daily series of specials from London International Shipping Week – examines the implications for shipping when it comes to sanctions, featuring the expert analysis of our speakers, particularly from the insurance perspective. According to Neil Roberts, head of marine underwriting at Lloyd’s Market Association, marine insurers are doing everything they can to adhere to sanctions and follow the law, however ambiguity around which entities are engaged in sanctions is a serious problem. Whilst it is an issue that is being foisted on industry, no amount of compliance expense is going to stop criminal behaviour, he argues, pointing out that insurance has no constabulary powers. More data is all very well but only a fraction of the data tide is useful or used. The US regulators are deliberately vague and this sets up a tension with insurers who are based on law which is binary. It is unrealistic to expect a supporting industry to solve an issue that a state wants to solve but lacks one or more of the means, will, or confidence to do militarily. Joining Lloyd’s List Editor to dissect the day’s debate and offer her own forthright views on the matter before she jets off to Toronto next week to address the annual IUMI conference is Michelle Wiese Bockmann. The global fight against infectious diseases has a new tactic called “genetic surveillance.” Dr. Bronwyn MacInnis leads a team of researchers that uses genetic surveillance to halt the spread of deadly microbes. Villa Milagro is a vineyard and winery in western New Jersey. There are green fields with trees along the edges, rolling hills on the horizon, and grape vines in nice neat rows. Chief winemaker Audrey Gambino takes us behind the "dream life" of running the vineyard. Romanticized visions of that job are what led Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games to create Viticulture, the strategic game of winemaking. It turns out that the thing that makes the game different from running a real business is the same thing that makes it pleasant to play. A good board game design can use the world around us to give players experiences that they might never get a chance to have in real life. But are these games actually true to life, or are they glossing over some things? And how do game designers walk that line? In Immersed, we’ll talk to the people who know what it’s really like. Along the way, we’ll find out what it takes to make a game, from the moment of inspiration all the way to how the finished product is received. Join us in January 2019 as we take you deep inside the world of a game. #ativismonaweb Arte: capa do livro "Battletech: A Time Of War" por Neil Roberts.

The year 2018 marks the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’ birth. It can hardly be said that scholars have neglected Douglass; indeed, he is one of the most written-about figures in American history. But not all aspects of Douglass’ thought have received their due. One such blank spot in what might be called “Douglass Studies” concerns his political philosophy. Williams College scholar Dr. Neil Roberts’ new edited volume, A Political Companion to Frederick Douglass (University Press of Kentucky, 2018), helps to fill this lacuna in Douglass scholarship. Adam McNeil is a PhD student in History, African American Public Humanities Initiative and Colored Conventions Project Scholar at the University of Delaware. In 2012, the journal Theory and Event published a symposium of essays on the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin earlier this year. The symposium brought together an array of contemporary theorists - Anna Marie Smith, Anne Norton, Michael Hanchard, Stephen H. Marshall, Ange-Marie Hancock, Mark Reinhardt, Christopher J. Lebron, and George Ciccariello-Maher - to demonstrate ongoingness of theorizing, the ways we are always to an extent in the middle of the events we endeavor to understand. Guest editor Neil Roberts joined us to talk about the symposium.

What does it mean to be free? How can paying attention to the relationship between freedom and slavery help construct a concept and practice of freedom that is “perpetual, unfinished, and rooted in acts of flight” (181)? In his book Freedom as Marronage University of Chicago Press, 2015), Neil Roberts (Africana Studies, Religion, and Political Science, Williams College) explores this and many other questions. Proceeding from and working with the concept and practice of marronage – modes of escape from slavery emerging from the Caribbean – Roberts articulates a theory of freedom that is historically specific while having trans-historical reverberations, and that is attentive to lived experiences of freedom and slavery. In doing so, he engages histories of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, diaspora, the Haitian Revolution, and American slavery. Arguing for the need to creolize political theory and philosophy, Roberts also takes up the thought and practice of W.E.B. DuBois, Hannah Arendt, Philip Petit, Frederick Douglass, Angela Davis, Toussaint L’Ouverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Edouard Glissant, Rastafari, and much more. Learn more about your ad choices.
