The ratification of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, or ECOA, 50 years ago marked the end of illegal lending practices that discriminated against borrowers based on their race, sex, age, religion, national origin, marital status, and source of income. Financial inequality, however, is still a persistent issue in the United States. One solution to this ongoing issue is closing the education gap when it comes to topics surrounding financial literacy. In this special episode, we sit down with Courtney Pettway, CEO and Co-Founder of KidVestors, and Ashley Leftwich, CEO of Rock the Street, Wall Street. These organizations are two of the 50 projects supporting women's financial independence that were awarded funds as part of the SoFi Give Her Credit Program. Both organizations seek to empower young people by teaching them the fundamentals of saving and budgeting, the benefits of growing their wealth through investing, and exposing them to female role models in math and finance. Kidvestors is an award-winning educational platform that teaches kids about money and finance tops in fun, accessible ways. Rock the Street, Wall Street is a non-profit organization that teaches the fundamentals of investing and finance to high school girls and undergraduate women. Send us a Text Message. In this episode launching on Juneteenth, come on a trip down the road from Selma, Alabama - home of the 1960s Selma Voting Rights Movement and the Selma to Montgomery marches - to the tiny little enclave of Gee's Bend, situated in a bend of the Alabama river. This is the home of the famous Gees Bend quilters. The community of Gee's Bend, Alabama, traces its roots back to the enslaved individuals who toiled on Joseph Gee's cotton plantation established in 1816. After the Civil War, ancestors continued to live and work on the plantation as sharecroppers. The economic downturn of the 1930s, marked by plummeting cotton prices, threatened the community's survival. In response, the Federal Government intervened during the Depression, purchasing ten thousand acres of the former plantation. They offered loans to the residents, enabling them to own and cultivate the land their forebears once worked unpaid. The people of Gee's Bend managed to keep their land and homes, preserving and cultivating cultural practices… Such as quilt-making.In the 1960s, inspired by a visit from Martin Luther King Jr., the Gees Bend community became active in the Civil Rights Movement, traveling by ferry to Camden to register to vote. In retaliation, authorities discontinued the ferry service, isolating Gee's Bend from essential services. During this challenging time, local women established the Freedom Quilting Bee, a cooperative that provided vital economic opportunities and political empowerment.Despite this past filled with hardship, the quilting tradition of Gee's Bend, which began in the 19th century, has survived and flourished. The New York Times has praised Gee's Bend quilts as “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.” These quilts represent a significant chapter in American art history and are now part of the permanent collections of over 30 major art museums.Set against this historical backdrop is the conversation I had with Loretta Pettway Bennett. Loretta is a celebrated member of the Gee's Bend quilters, a group of (mostly) women whose incredible works not only bring their beauty to museum walls but have also weave important stories of Black American history, culture, and vision. Listen to hear about Loretta's stories and experiences growing up in this incredible arts community.Connect:- About Loretta Pettway Bennett- Gee's Bend Quilters Instagram- Rebeka instagram- The Heart Gallery Instagram- Episode blog post - coming shortly!Credits:- Samuel Cunningham: podcast editing- Cosmo Sheldrake: music from his song Pelicans We.

Raina Lampkins-Felder, Curator at the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, weaves together the histories of Black artists who stayed in Southern America during the Great Migration, like the Quiltmakers of Gee's Bend. Black artists based in the American South have always forged unique artistic practices - as multigenerational as multimedia in form. Using found and ‘reclaimed' materials, their sculptures, paintings, drawings, and quilts speak to these artists' individual ingenuity, and the enslavement, Jim Crow-era segregation, and institutionalised racism which continues to colour America's past and present. Geographically isolated, but well-connected within communities, artists like Thornton Dial, Estelle Witherspoon, and the Gee's Bend Quiltmakers have challenged conventions about the education and display of art - perhaps why they've been overlooked in the canon of art history. As a landmark exhibition opens in London, ‘activist curator' Raina Lampkins-Felder shares why so many artists stayed on their lands, and why last names like Lockett, Bendolph, and Pettway crop up time and again. We travel from plantations and kitchen tables, to yard shows, typically Southern sculpture parks, where artists self-represent and directly communicate with their publics. We hear about the women at the fore of the first Black-owned businesses in the US, what the Freedom Quilting Bee and local churches had to do the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and how contemporary housetop textiles continue to ‘bend and break' traditions today. Souls Grown Deep like the Rivers: Black Artists from the American South runs at the Royal Academy in London until 18 June 2023. In episode 255, Kestrel welcomes Mary Margaret Pettway, a fourth generation Gee's Bend Quilter, and designer Greg Lauren, to the show. Mary Margaret and Greg have recently been part of a collaboration titled MOSAIC: Gee's Bend & Greg Lauren. “Quilting and sewing gives you a freedom that is totally different. You got a sense of pride in what you wear, what you like — and if you make it, it's all the better.” -Mary Margaret Gee's Bend, Alabama is a rural community with deep historical roots connected to quilting. Emanating textile wisdom, the women of Gee's Bend have created hundreds of masterpieces. This week's conversation is the fruit of a unique partnership between Gee's Bend's quilters and designer Greg Lauren. Before we get into more of what this entails, I want to share some words by Jonathan Michael Square, the curatorial partner for this collaboration, from a piece called “Beloved Patches of Orange”. “The use of old clothing is a reminder of the resourcefulness and creativity of African Americans resulting from slavery. The genius of the Gee's Bend quilters has had a transformative impact on how scholars and curators understand the diversity and complexity of African American creative expression and Black abstract expressionism borne out of the crucible of slavery. Within the fields of fiber and textile studies, the work of the Gee's Bend quilters has been consistently referenced since the community started getting the attention that it deserved in the mid-20th century. Ultimately, the collaboration between Gee's Bend and Greg Lauren is a creative ping-pong match between a community of master needle workers and a purveyor of reworked American sportswear. Lauren, who is an artist first, uses his brand as a canvas to work out the complexity of American identity in the most radical ways. The collaboration is a conduit for shedding more light on this under acknowledged group of artists whose work is often relegated pejoratively to the realm of craft, despite sustained interest from scholars, curators, and collectors.” On the show, we explore more on what an equitable collaboration means to Mary Margaret and Greg Lauren, and how they've intentionally built a model that can be replicated by / with others in the future. Quotes & links from the conversation: “Preloved is very much a word down here — we don't understand the term deadstock. There is no such thing. If it can hold together, it can be used in a quilt. If it doesn't shred in your hand, it can be used in a quilt, you know. It just depends on the person and their personal taste for doing things. Like I said, we grew up — if your zipper tore, we fixed it. If you had a hole in your pocket, we mended it. If your pants were too short, we lengthened it. If they were too long, we hemmed them. If you had a hole in your knee, we took our time, found a really old pair that were no good anywhere else, and we took time and we patched them. So, sustainability down here is just basically a way of life.” -Mary Margaret (27:46) “Recycling and repurposing to me actually started with this idea that I used to speak about called recycling image. I wanted to change the way we saw clothing and wanted to change the way we saw archetypes and what those pieces of clothing meant.” -Greg (40:35) “Around 2018, I started to look more specifically at this idea of Americana — and I say that because I was exposed to the word Americana and all the visual references of Americana really as this, almost a stylistic symbol of something that was completely vague and half-told. And I had this creative idea of — well, so we'll reinterpret quilts. I had never used quilts before, but quilts to me were something that were so symbolic of an idea of Americana, an idea of America. Usually, such a small part of the story was actually told. And that started to bother me, because I literally was guilty of exploring red and white quilts, blue and white quilts. I put that into Google and I just started seeing all these quilts that I had seen so often as representative of Americana … later in 2020, it was the first time there were some transformative conversations and deep dive into the history of some of our aesthetics, that I discovered Gee's Bend. And I literally saw a few quilts — specifically a couple by Mary Lee Bendolph and Annie Mae Young … and what started with seeing the work clothes quilts that so many people may not — I certainly didn't realize — were such a huge part of the history of Gee's Bend quilters … And I thought — well, thank you very much to the history and legacy of Gee's Bend, because without that, there's no way any of us working today work with scraps and remnants, and we're all so proud of our initiatives, but that doesn't exist without the work that came before us. And while it's great to now bring it now to the forefront of what we're doing as creatives, we've gotta credit the story and embrace the legacy and history of it.” -Greg (41:55) “Mary Margaret said something very profound when we were together in Los Angels. She said that, you know, people have been taking from Gee's Bend for a long, long time. That they come down, spend time together, buy a quilt, and then they're never heard from again. And then, they go and sell it for so much more money somewhere down the road. And, we wanted to just create a different model where the women whose artwork is being celebrated and that is what these garments are made of — that they would have an opportunity to participate in the financial success of the project as well." -Greg (1:02:15) Jonathan Michael Square, curatorial partner for MOSAIC & author of "Beloved Patches Of Orange" MOSAIC: Gee's Bend x Greg Lauren Nest x Gee's Bend Souls Grown Deep Follow Gee's Bend Quilters on Instagram > Follow Greg Lauren on Instagram >
Born and raised in Gee's Bend, Alabama, Mary Margaret is a third-generation quilter. She says that it didn't matter if you were a boy or a girl: If your mother was a quilter you were going to learn how to quilt. What they did was a way of life and a necessity. They didn't know what they were doing would be considered art. All that changed in the late 1990s and early 2000s when a man by the name of William Arnett came and bought quilts from everyone in town. It is because of Arnett and the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, which he founded, that the quilts of Gee's Bend are now in museums. (4:00 – 7:18) A trustee of Souls Grown Deep since 2017, Mary Margaret spearheaded efforts to locate living Gees Bend quilters with works in the collection or their heirs to help them get representation for the copyrights through a partnership with the Artists Rights Society. “I would rather sew than do anything,” says Mary Margaret, “and making quilts is my favorite thing to create.” One of her favorite Gee's Bend quilts is hanging in the High Museum of Art in Alabama and was the inspiration for the skirt worn by First Lady Michelle Obama in her official portrait. (14:47-16:40) Mary Margaret continues to advocate for the citizens of Gee's Bend. She was instrumental in establishing the Gee's Bend Resource Center and is dedicated to helping quilters get access to the marketplace. She tells them, “Show the world what you can do. It's one thing to say yes, I can quilt. Yes, I can sew. But it's another to show me.” (17:55-20:22) Quilting America, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal showcases the rich history of quilting and talks about a new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This exhibit features pieces from Gee's Bend quilters. A teacher at the Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center, Mary Margaret loves what she does. Whether she's teaching children how to sew an apron or a pillow, or teaching women how to sew or hand quilt, she takes them through the process, step by step. Her commitment to her craft and her community is inspiring. According to her, “Gee's Bend is a 17- or 19-mile ride from Alberta down a road that looks like it leads to nowhere, when actually it leads to paradise.” (23:39-24:20) After listening to our candid conversation about life, quilting, and the power of community, you'll likely want to connect with Mary Margaret to learn more. Sheriff Pettway speaks candidly about his life, faith, and hopes and dreams as Sheriff of Jefferson County, Alabama.
Juan Francisco Manzano and Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés (Plácido) were perhaps the most important and innovative Cuban writers of African descent during the Spanish colonial era. Both nineteenth-century authors used Catholicism as a symbolic language for African-inspired spirituality. Likewise, Plácido and Manzano subverted the popular imagery of neoclassicism and Romanticism in order to envision black freedom in the tradition of the Haitian Revolution. Plácido and Manzano envisioned emancipation through the lens of African spirituality, a transformative moment in the history of Cuban letters. In Cuban Literature in the Age of Black Insurrection: Manzano, Plácido, and Afro-Latino Religion (University Press of Mississippi) Matthew J. Pettway examines how the portrayal of African ideas of spirit and cosmos in otherwise conventional texts recur throughout early Cuban literature and became the basis for Manzano and Plácido’s antislavery philosophy. The portrayal of African-Atlantic religious ideas spurned the elite rationale that literature ought to be a barometer of highbrow cultural progress. Cuban debates about freedom and selfhood were never the exclusive domain of the white Creole elite. Pettway’s emphasis on African-inspired spirituality as a source of knowledge and a means to sacred authority for black Cuban writers deepens our understanding of Manzano and Plácido not as mere imitators but as aesthetic and political pioneers. As Pettway suggests, black Latin American authors did not abandon their African religious heritage to assimilate wholesale to the Catholic Church. By recognizing the wisdom of African ancestors, they procured power in the struggle for black liberation. Matthew J. Pettway is assistant professor of Spanish at University of South Alabama. Adam McNeil is a PhD student in History, African American Public Humanities Initiative and Colored Conventions Project Scholar at the University of Delaware. John Walters introduces us to La'Michael Pettway who recently transferred to Iowa State after leading Arkansas in receiving yards last season.
First, Levi talked to grad transfer receiver La'Michael Pettway to hear why he chose to come to Iowa State, what relationships he's already developing, and who he's most looking forward to playing in the fall. Then, Jay Jordan (52 Trap) made a return to his old stomping grounds to do a deep analysis on the 2019 Cyclone Football roster. We broke up the players into different "tiers," starting with the guys that we haven't seen, but have the tools and foundation to be really successful, all the way to the guys that we think are already great players, and have a chance to cement their status as one of the best in school history.
Iowa State picked up two important new players in football and basketball this week in transfer receiver La'Michael Pettway and 2019 freshman guard Caleb Grill, respectively. We took a look each player's skill set, and how well they'll fit in with their respective schemes. If you'd like to hear more about Pettway, we have you covered, because he'll be joining us for next week's episode! Then, we dove into the NBA playoffs and took a look at each conference semifinal series, and made some predictions on who will be heading to their conference finals.
Jared Stansbury and Chris Williams dissect Caleb Grill’s commitment to Iowa State and what it means for the program plus La’Michel Pettway’s decision to attend Iowa State as a grad transfer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Auburn Podcast: Where does Kam Pettway end up? Here are some time stamps to follow along with on the podcast: Start of the show: Blackerby previews the show and gives listeners a heads up on what will be on the podcast today. Blackerby references an article from SEC Country that mentions an anonymous scout from an AFC team declaring that Kam Pettway is not draftable due to off the field concerns. Blackerby, Ferguson, and Gardner all discuss the claim. While Blackerby agrees that he may not be draftable, he makes the argument that it is not for that reason. 11-minute mark: The conversation shifts to Bryce Brown's availability. It certainly looks like he will be able to play against Kentucky Wednesday night. The guys discuss his ability and what he adds to this Auburn team and why specifically he will be needed for Auburn to be successful against the Wildcats. End of the show: The conversation drifts to Kentucky's success and failures this season. Though they are very talented as a individuals, they have not come together as a team. With no true jump shooters, Auburn has the advantage in SEC play. Blackerby wraps up the show urging listeners to leave a review to help the show if they are on iTunes. If they are listening on Sound Cloud, he asks listeners to link the track. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
