In this episode, Kelsie interviews Davida Siwisa James about the overlooked contributions of women during the Harlem Renaissance. James' book, Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill, published by Fordham University Press, traces 400 years of West Harlem history, including its iconic architecture and luminaries. Highlights include Regina Anderson Andrews, a Schomburg librarian; Mary Lou Williams, a jazz pioneer who shaped Bebop; Lenon Holder Hoyte, a private doll museum curator; and the women who published Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. These fascinating stories bring Sugar Hill's rich cultural legacy to life. The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and the Reclamation of Their Groundbreaking History   By:  Karen ValbyThe forgotten story of a pioneering group of five Black ballerinas, the first principals in the Dance Theatre of Harlem, who traveled the world as highly celebrated stars in their field and whose legacy was erased from history until now.At the height of the Civil Rights movement, Lydia Abarça was a Black prima ballerina with a major international dance company—the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She was the first Black ballerina on the cover of Dance magazine, an Essence cover star, cast in The Wiz  and on Broadway with Bob Fosse. She performed in some of ballet's most iconic works with her closest friends—founding members of the company, the Swans of Harlem, Gayle McKinney, Sheila Rohan, Marcia Sells, and Karlya Shelton—for the Queen of England and Mick Jagger, with Josephine Baker, at the White House, and beyond. Some forty years later, when Lydia's granddaughter wanted to show her own ballet class evidence of her grandmother's success, she found almost none, but for some yellowing photographs and programs in the family basement. Lydia had struggled for years to reckon with the erasure of her success, as all the Swans had. Still united as sisters in the present, they decided it was time to share their story themselves.Captivating, rich in vivid detail and character, and steeped in the glamor and grit of professional ballet, The Swans of Harlem  is a riveting account of five extraordinarily accomplished women, a celebration of their historic careers, and a window into the robust history of Black ballet, hidden for too long. During Covid, five ballerinas met weekly on Zoom and formed the 152nd Street Black Ballet Legacy Council. Karen Valby joined them and wrote their story “Karen Valby's The Swans of Harlem brings to life the stories of Black dancers whose contributions to the world of ballet were silenced, marginalized, and otherwise erased. Karen introduces readers to important figures of our past, while inspiring us to courageously chase our dreams.”Misty Copeland“These five original Dance Theatre of Harlem ballerinas fell in love with an art form that most of America believed was white and should remain so. Upon Arthur Mitchell's founding of an all-Black company in 1969, they eagerly took their places at the barre and challenged themselves to the utmost. They triumphed. They showed that Blacks could not only excel at classical ballet but could also shape the art in their own vibrant image. Karen Valby weaves their stories together as a choreographer would: the women form an ensemble, yet each gets her own riveting solo. It's thrilling to watch as they join forces at last and claim their unique place in American ballet's past, present and future.”—Margo Jefferson152nd Street Black Ballet Legacy FoundationThe 152nd St. Black Ballet Legacy is an independent non-profit organization created by five trailblazing Black ballerinas.  Their professional careers began at the founding of Dance Theatre of Harlem, where their sisterhood was born.  They have enjoyed and nurtured their sisterhood for over 50 years and continue to thrive for the sake of preserving our their rich history.Lydia Abarca Mitchell is a founding member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem and their first prima ballerina. She danced leading roles in George Balanchine's Agon, Bugaku, Concerto Barocco, Allegro Brillante, Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, and Swan Lake, Jerome Robbins' Afternoon of a Faun, Ruth Page's Carmen and Jose, William Dollar's Le Combat, and Arthur Mitchell's Ode to Otis, Holberg Suite, and Biosfera. She was featured on the cover of DanceMagazine, in the movie The Wiz, and on Broadway in Bob Fosse's Dancin'.  It was a stunning career on the world stage.Karen Valby Author of Welcome to Utopia, and contributor to The New York Times; O, The Oprah Magazine; Glamour; Fast Company; and Entertainment WeeklyDance Theater of HarlemThe Dance Theater of Harlem was founded in 1969, during the Civil Rights movement by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook.Harlem School of the ArtsElizabeth Howard, Producer and Host of the Short Fuse Podcast Elizabeth Howard is the producer and host of the Short Fuse Podcast, conversations with artists, writers, musicians, and others whose art reveals our communities through their lens and stirs us to seek change. Kellee is overjoyed to introduce all of you to Jackie Schomburg, a workshop leader whose passion in life is helping others get unstuck from various aspects of their lives, create authentic art, and allow people to get out of their own ways. Jackie transitioned from the corporate world when she could feel herself falling victim to the hustle and stress of the corporate world until she was able to break free and pursue her passion of approaching a business that supports vulnerability and showing up as yourself. In online businesses today, social media plays a vital role in building our creative pursuits, which brought Jackie into the Build It Remarkable program and she has come away with a new comprehension of how to market herself to her audience without feeling sleazy or salesy. She has been leaning into showing up more as herself, embracing building her list, and marketing herself knowing that she has a brilliant gift to offer to others.About Jackie Schomburg: Jackie Schomburg is a self-taught abstract mixed media artist, and teacher, living with her husband and three young children in the Chicago suburbs. Her current abstract paintings are focused on identity and the tension between freedom and the need to belong. In addition to exploring this in her own art, Jackie also teaches workshops blending art making and journaling.Jackie's Brave Art & Creative Wellness workshops focus on the process of making art, rather than the finished product itself. Participating artists learn to use mark-making, collage, or grid journals to slow down, de-stress, and stay present in the moment. This process is a highly effective self-care tool that can help calm anxiety, promote positive mental health, boost self-confidence, encourage self-expression, unblock creativity, and help process trauma in a safe space. On this day in 1871, Arthur A. Schomburg, a Puerto Rican historian, writer, and researcher, was born. Renowned for his activism and dedication to preserving African-American history, Schomburg's collection of literature formed the basis for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library. After arriving in America in 1891, he relocated to New York City a decade later, where he worked as a researcher at a law firm. In 1911, Schomburg co-founded the Negro Society for Historical Research, aiming to establish a scholarly institute. Actively engaged in the Harlem Renaissance, he served as the co-editor of the 1912 edition of the Encyclopedia of the Colored Race. In 1926, the New York City Public Library acquired his extensive collection of historical materials. Arthur Schomburg passed away in 1938 in Brooklyn. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome everyone. A little shopkeeping before we start. Dr. Simon Curtis is hosting his last webinar of the year on December 6th.  It's called the Hough Rehab Webinar with Marty Sala and Paige Posse.  For tickets to this event, go to  www.eventbrite.co.uk and look up the Hoof Rehab Webinar with Dr. Simon Curtis. And don't forget to enter Mullins as the discount code at checkout.  This episode is being released just after hosting my good friend Cody Gregory for a one-day forging clinic at Andrew DeVisser's shop in Paris, Ontario and then a two-day whole horse dissection at the McKee-Pownall Clinic in Schomburg, Ontario. As usual, Cody knocked it out of the park with both clinics. Cody is the king of full immersion, and Equine Anatomy has been one of his deep dives. About 40 whole horse dissections later, he has teaching it down to an art. If you're interested in setting up one for your own association or group, I would highly recommend reaching out to him. Go to  www.codygregoryllc.com and send him a message through his site. Today's interview comes from my time spent at Stoneleigh this year, and we've released it first in the queue of many interviews I did there because of its topical nature. You may recognize Tom Smith's voice from the episode I did with the Farriers Registration Council last year. As the chair of the council, Tom has a unique perspective on the controversy surrounding the diploma and higher-level exams in England through the Worshipful Company of Farriers.  I would highly recommend that you listen to both the FRC and the Worshipful Company episodes. If you're not familiar with the organizations and the jobs that they fulfill for farriery in England,  then to make you do even more homework, I would point you to the BFBA's website at www.forgeandfarrier.co.uk and search for the press releases on the farriery endpoint assessment updates under the latest news tab. I feel like with this little bit of leg work, you will have a much better understanding of the situation.   Ever since meeting Tom last year, I wanted to sit down with him and understand why he took the often thankless position he has with the FRC and what his journey to become an FWCF was like. After our relatively brief first encounter, my instincts told me that he was going to be an inspiring guest and as you will hear, he did not disappoint. Thoughtful, driven, and not afraid to tackle the hard things, Tom has accomplished many impressive goals.  You'll even hear us get a little choked up about our respective truck dogs who recently passed.  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Agriculture is unique in that it creates a passion and devotion in people unrivaled by any other careers that come to mind.  I often quip that only actors, artists and musicians will work a second job just so they can work the first, but farmers will do it too.  So many of them will work a full time job in the city just so they have the opportunity to farm.  That is what this show is all about.   John Schomburg has this same devotion to farming, but he demonstrates it a little bit differently.  John builds scale models of farm equipment and farming scenes, and he photographs farm equipment to capture its legacy before it is no longer seen on farms.  And, this is just the tip of the iceberg.   In today's interview John talks about how he got started building models of farming equipment, why he has file cabinets full of old farm equipment catalogs, why he takes photographs if farms and farm equipment all over Wisconsin and how this all came together for him to win the National Farm Toy Show in 2005, 2012 and 2015.  He even takes us on a tour of his studio and expresses his deepest feelings over the realization that his families farming legacy ends with him.

In luminous paintings and arresting poems, two of children's literature's top African-American scholars track Arturo Schomburg's quest to correct history.Where is our historian to give us our side? Arturo asked.Amid the scholars, poets, authors, and artists of the Harlem Renaissance stood an Afro–Puerto Rican named Arturo Schomburg. This law clerk's life's passion was to collect books, letters, music, and art from Africa and the African diaspora and bring to light the achievements of people of African descent through the ages. When Schomburg's collection became so big it began to overflow his house (and his wife threatened to mutiny), he turned to the New York Public Library, where he created and curated a collection that was the cornerstone of a new Negro Division. A century later, his groundbreaking collection, known as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, has become a beacon to scholars all over the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/support

Our next guest is Meredith Schomburg, a Brooklyn-based illustrator originally from North Carolina. Today, we'll be hearing about the interesting twists and turns of Meredith's career thus far. Like many of us, she was told as a child that art wouldn't make a living, so she went down the more "constructive" graphic design route. After graduating in the field from North Carolina State University in 2015, she secured an internship at IDEO in Boston, which led to her first full-time job at a small creative shop before landing the role of Experience Designer at Airbnb in San Francisco a year later. In 2019, she joined Koto in LA as a senior designer. It was during her time at that studio when the pandemic hit, which proved to be especially difficult for Meredith but also valuable. She realised she really did want to pursue a career in art, turning to illustration as her full-time gig. Well, it's been almost a year since she went freelance, all is going well, and she's just been signed by the agency, Jelly. In this episode, we talk about Meredith beginning her journey as a fully-fledged illustrator, having previously worked in-house at some of the world's leading brands and design studios. We hear more of how she found herself in a bit of a bad patch during lockdown and why she decided to move away from a full-time design role. And then we get to grips with how she made that happen, how she found her optimistic and colourful style, and how she kept going. And how her voice has finally taken shape. We even talk about all that practical but necessary business stuff. Because, as a freelancer, no one really tells you what it takes to work for yourself, so she was keen to share what she's learnt on that and much more.

Today's episode features guests Frances Rust, PhD and Roberta Schomburg, PhD.  In the late 1970s, the Carnegie Foundation began to explore the differences between a PhD and an EdD. All too often it seemed that teachers and administrators found the PhD to have little relevance to their world of practice. At the same time, those in the university were concerned that the results of research were not being integrated into practice.  These concerns gave rise to a question, “What can be done to make the EdD both scholarly and practically relevant?”  No one wants the EdD to be a PhD lite. At the same time, there doesn't seem to be a consensus on what substantive practitioner scholarship should look like. Dr. Rust and Dr. Schomburg bring their wealth of experience in working with students at the doctoral level to this conversation about the nature of doctoral study and the dissertation as part of doctoral work.

Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, and Dr. Bernice King, the daughter of MLK, share a birthright of inherited activism that few others can understand. The series begins when Trymaine Lee acquires a signed print by Jacob Lawrence titled “Schomburg Library.”The Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture is based in Harlem, but its roots are on the island of Puerto Rico with a little Afro Puerto Rican boy named Arturo Schomburg. Determined to collect a record of Black history that could tell us who we are and where we've been, Arturo Schomburg amassed a personal collection of 10,000 Black books, artwork and documents. That collection eventually became the Schomburg Center we know today, which is part of the New York Public Library system. Trymaine Lee speaks with Vanessa Valdés, author of Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, Shola Lynch, curator of the Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division of the Schomburg Center, and Arturo Schomburg's grandson, Dean Schomburg to better understand who Arturo was and the impact of his legacy on Black identity and Black culture. For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Thoughts?
