Today we're joined by Jeff Cloud of Velvet Blue Music, known for his work with Pony Express, Joy Electric, and California dream pop band Starflyer 59. Cloud founded Velvet Blue in 1996, and the label has been home to pivotal releases by people like Richard Swift, with whom Cloud played in Pony Express and Starflyer 59, the Broadway Hush, an early project headed by Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw of Cotton Jones, Fine China, and many more. Totally blue collar in spirit and independent, the label continues to release new music from groups like the synth pop outfit Golf Slang, as well as Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric and Jason Martin's Starflyer 59 gem, Vanity. Aziz in the snow, in Switzerland — Photo: Michael Green 'Hard to imagine. Start your life again. Have your own house, your own family.' – Abdul Aziz Muhamat Incredibly, Aziz is in Switzerland. And he's just won a major international award for human rights defenders. He's swamped with attention and adoration, briefings and business cards. But he is only allowed to be in Geneva for three short weeks. Then he has to return to Manus Island – back to the dangerous situation he's being celebrated for campaigning against. In this episode, we follow Aziz as he negotiates meetings with diplomats and speeches to the UN. He struggles with an unexpected, oppressive dilemma – should he board a plane back to his brothers on Manus, or seek yet another uncertain path to safety and freedom? Like a warm cup of coffee, Maryland folk musician Michael Nau’s music will simultaneously relax you with cozy folk vibes and invigorate you with vibrant, expressive lyrics. Formerly the frontman of Page France and Cotton Jones, Nau sounds like your really talented friend playing for you in the living room. In fact, Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread was recorded with friends in a one-bedroom apartment. That LP won’t be released until August 3rd of this year, but the first single, “Less Than Positive” is available now on iTunes. It’s a blissfully sweet love song that will have you toe-tapping along, even on a first listen. Much like other Nau songs, cheerful keys carry the tune and complement Nau’s soulful, uncomplicated vocals for a fully approachable, feel-good sound. Set list: Shadow On Diamond Row - interview - Wonder Light That Ever Hosted by Emmalee Smith. Mixed by Brian Niesz.

This wasn't particularly supposed to be all fuzzy and noisy, and in actual fact is probably isn't, except for in bits. I have been listening to the Male Bonding album a lot this week, and then the split single from Thee Ludds and The No-Brainers dropped into my inbox, and then I became fascinated by the splendid mess that is I'llfinishyrfinish and suddenly I realised I had a podcast which was pretty much all over the place. So I decided to embrace it, go for it and just appreciate the noise. There is some acoustic fuzz too, and a song by Grandaddy who can be fuzzy but often aren't, but in general if you like your music to be played on a tape recorder down the back of the sofa in the next room, you should like this. Oh, and we have the new Walkmen track and the new Cotton Jones one and all sorts. Aren't we clever. Actually, who the fuck am I calling 'we', anyway? 01. The Walkmen - Stranded (02.20)02. Grandaddy - Fuck the Valley Fudge (09.02)03. Male Bonding - Your Contact (16.19)04. Navigator - Headless Horseman (The Microphones cover) (19.44)05. Grizzly Prospector - Oh! Grizzly Me (Slow) (Live) (21.06)06. Cotton Jones - Glorylight and Christie (24.09)07. The Sound of the Ladies - The 40s Never Died (27.35)08. Thee Ludds - I'm a Moron (34.42)09. The Walkmen - Thinking of a Dream I Had (42.06)10. Ace Bushy Striptease - I'llfinishyrfinish (I'll Finish You) (49.32)
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
