TEACHING SERIES: Fridge Magnet Christianity TITLE: Genesis BY: Nathanael Ballew DATE: Sunday 12 October 2025 Bible Passage: Genesis 38:1-30 “Come now, let me sleep with you.” A disturbing and often-overlooked story. We'll face its difficult themes head-on, asking what it reveals about the human heart, God's purposes, and the need for redemption in even the darkest places. Big deals and big meals. "Recovering" former San Leandro Councilmember Pete Ballew joins the season finale of The Marinade for a hearty conversation over lamb chops, 10-hour smoked beef ribs, and longanisa sausage. Ballew reflects on his eight years of public service, sharing candid thoughts on ethics at City Hall, the challenge of generating new revenue, and his outlook on the city's future. “The 89-9 has a built-in distrust of government,” Ballew says, using his trademark nickname for San Leandro and its residents. A former San Leandro police officer, Ballew also weighs in on law enforcement and the current direction of the city council. “There's two types of councilpeople,” he says. “People that get into it for the community, and people that get into it for themselves.” This episode of The Marinade with Lee Thomas is sponsored by Borja Plus Media photography and videography. Ever wonder what it's like to build a coworking space outside the U.S. from scratch, in another language, with a whole new playbook? Joel Ballew is the Chief People Officer at Coventus Space in Barranquilla, Colombia, and he's not your average operator. He moved his family from Georgia to Colombia, sold his dream business, learned Spanish from the ground up, and launched what is now the largest privately held coworking space in a city of nearly 2 million people. In this episode, Joel shares the highs, the lows, and the “wait, you did what?” moments of creating a thriving, purpose-driven business in an emerging market. We talk about: The cultural and operational curveballs of launching a coworking space in Colombia—including why recurring payments aren't really a thing. How Joel built lead volume through WhatsApp, Instagram, and literal flyers on car windshields (and why it's working). What it takes to educate a market on coworking while creating a strong local brand. How his space combines private offices, day passes, event rentals, and even a coffee shop run by a third party. Why doing good while doing well isn't just a tagline—it's a business model that fuels impact and sustainability. Whether you're a seasoned operator or dreaming of launching in a new market, this conversation is a masterclass in adapting, listening to your audience, and building community on your own terms. On July 1, 2022, we aired an episode of the Paragould Podcast with Jerry Bellew: an MMA fighter and owner of Bellew Barber Shop. Sadly, he was taken from us far too early, on May 14, 2025 at the age of 46. Our original episode description: Jerry Ballew joins us to talk about his fascinating journey that ultimately landed him in Paragould. After hanging out in the barber shops of Brooklyn, NY, moving to Houston, TX, spending time on an oil rig in the Gulf, and working as a private security contractor in Afghanistan, it was MMA that eventually brought him to our city. Jerry's incredible journey is guaranteed to inspire you to make the most of the life you've been given.

This week, Ryan and Patrick interview Scott Ballew, the director of the new documentary, All This Is Sacred - check it out now on Yeti Films.
Scott Ballew is a filmmaker, singer, and songwriter who has taken a remarkable journey from directing adventure films for Yeti to releasing music as a solo artist starting in his late 30s. Carl explores Scott's upbringing in a modest household in Austin, Texas, where his family faced financial struggles but maintained a stable environment. Scott describes himself as a recovering Texas football star and drug addict, and now that he's found sobriety, he reflects on the internal struggle of wanting a stable, conventional life while feeling compelled to pursue life as an artist. Scott's story highlights the importance of finding personal fulfillment beyond material achievements, even when it doesn't lead to immediate financial gain. He discusses potential solutions like downsizing, reverse mortgages, and turning a home into an investment property, providing insights into the advantages and drawbacks of each approach. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://eggstack.com/blog/2021-06-27-House-Rich-and-Cash-Poor/ Quotes to ponder: "Owning a home is an important part of wealth-building and a cornerstone of The American Dream, but as we age, it can feel like an albatross." "Downsizing to a smaller home has many advantages, including reduced utility bills and property taxes, making it an appealing option for retirees needing less space." In this episode Abena Appah-Sampong (@abenasamp) and Leana Dogbe (@leanadogbe) partner with Vaiva Dabravolskaite (vaivadabravolskaite@gmail.com) from ESVS to host an episode discussing social deprivation in vascular surgery. Dr. Tara Mastracci and Dr. Olamide Alabi join us to offer insights into how social deprivation drives disparities in outcomes and steps to how we can shift practice paradigms to better address our patient needs. Dr. Tara Mastracci (@aorticsurgeon) is a vascular surgeon with over 15 years of experience treating and managing complex aortic pathologies. She is currently working at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, UK, on the Cardiothoracic Team doing complex aortic surgery. On top of her clinical duties, Dr. Mastracci is dedicated to studying the social and non-clinical factors influencing vascular outcomes. Dr. Olamide Alabi (@OAlabiMD) is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. Her clinical effort focuses on the full scope of vascular disease for patients at Emory University Hospital and the Atlanta VA HealthCare System, however, her academic portfolio and funded research is focused primarily on the intersection of peripheral artery disease, quality, and health equity. Today we take a look at how the state of Kansas qualifies athletes to their outdoor state track and field meet. *Fun Fact: Kansas is one of the nearly 25 states that throws the javelin as part of their state series.
Scott Ballew is an Austin, Texas-based filmmaker and musician. For years, he's directed unforgettable videos and documentaries for Yeti and others. In 2020, he decided to take up songwriting and recorded his first album just a year later. This week, Ballew releases his third album, Rio Bravo. It's an exceptional work that somehow combines Ballew's affinity for Townes Van Zandt and other Austin legends with his love for reverb-drenched Ennio Morricone soundtracks. We love it. During our chat, Scott tells us about his unlikely journey from football star to director to songwriter and about how filmmaking has shaped his music output. We also talk about the making of Rio Bravo, Scott's growing guitar collection, the time he spent with Townes Van Zandt's Gibson, and how – thanks to Pearl Jam – he ended up playing football for the University of Washington.
