Then there were the Saturday morning cartoon spinoffs: Fonz and the Happy Days Gang (in which our heroes travel through time in a flying saucer), Laverne and Shirley in the Army (with their sergeant, an actual pig voiced by Horshack), and Mork and Mindy (but they're in high school and drive an egg car). We even touch on a few proposed spinoffs that never happened, starring Ralph and Potsie, those pesky Tuscadero girls... and the mysterious Kat Mandu. PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI on JUMPING THE SHARK.First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on June 21st 2026.This week, if it hasn't done so already, VISION ON SOUND finally gets to jump the shark, that strange phenomenon where a TV show does something so outrageous, so ridiculous, or something simply so awful that its viewers can never really look at it in quite the same way again. The phrase itself refers back to 1977, and an episode in the fifth season of the popular American wholesome family sitcom HAPPY DAYS in which the much loved Arthur Fonzarelli (“THE FONZ”) straps on his water-skis and, well, jumps over a shark, although the phrase itself, referring to television absurdities generally, wasn't coined until 1985, nearly a decade later, by JOHN HEIN and SEAN CONNOLLY.Whilst the phrase is often used to point out the particular moment that a television series knows that it is doomed, that particular episode of HAPPY DAYS was actually very successful, and the series itself continued for another six seasons across the next seven years, and prompted seven different spin-off series during its run, including LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, and MORK & MINDY.PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, suggested that we might want to talk about this whole notion of Jumping The Shark, and, at the risk of strapping on our own water-skis, over the next hour we chat about several of our favourite TV series and whether or not they ever jumped the shark, and I hope you'll enjoy at least some of that we come up with.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. En outre, pour fêter ce jalon qui coïncide avec le quinzième anniversaire d'Amplitudes, on a décidé de sortir des murs de Radio Campus Paris pour s'installer pendant non pas deux, mais bel et bien trois heures à l'Extra Life Café, entre le Jardin des Plantes et le Val de Grâce, en compagnie du maître des lieux Ghislain lorsqu'il ne sera pas trop occupé à prendre soin de nous dans son temple. Parmi les bornes d'arcade, les consoles intergénérationnelles et les manga divers et variés, le tout dans une ambiance qui magnifie l'Amour du dixième art que l'on essaye de partager avec vous durant ces émissions, on persiste à déblatérer avec passion de ce média multidisciplinaire qui n'a jamais autant été mis en avant qu'aujourd'hui. Today we salute Foster Brooks whose signature character -- "The Lovable Lush" -- was a mainstay on 1970s television shows and Las Vegas showrooms. Foster started out as a traditional standup and worked his way up in LA (along with a number of day jobs). When game show host Dennis James introduced Foster to Perry Como, the crooner tapped him to be his regular opener. Dean Martin became a fan and Foster's frequent appearances on Dino's 1970s variety show usually ended up a marinated master of malaprops and misunderstandings. Foster also was a regular at the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. Public opinion regarding alcohol shifted dramatically in the early 1980s and Foster largely shelved his drunken character. He took on a number of television guest roles including Mr. Sternhagen, Mindy's boss on Mork and Mindy as well as bits in a number of direct to video movies.
