In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. EA - Life in a Day: The film that opened my heart to effective altruism by Aaron Gertler

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Life in a Day: The film that opened my heart to effective altruism, published by Aaron Gertler on April 27, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. There are at least two kinds of "EA origin story": Some people discover it for themselves. They have EA-flavored goals, they Google something like "do the most good", and they find EA. Other people are introduced by others. They have EA-flavored goals, but they don't find EA until someone tells them about it. My story is the second kind. I saw Peter Singer give a talk, which I attended because I'd read GiveWell's website, which I'd seen on LessWrong, which I heard about from Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. So I owe part of my ethical system to the guy who heard me discussing Harry Potter in a college dining hall, interrupted my conversation, gave me a five-minute pitch for HPMOR, and left. (I never saw him again.) But what about the rest of the story? Peter Singer convinced me to join Giving What We Can and earn to give after college. Hundreds of other people watched the same talk, in the same auditorium, and didn't do those things. There must be some other factor that made me especially receptive to EA (that is, gave me "EA-flavored goals"). Of course, there are actually dozens of factors, because life is complicated. For example: I speak English, and live in a country that had EA presence early on. My parents are empathetic people who shaped me into an empathetic person. My parents are financially secure people who didn't need my support, so I could easily afford to give 10% of my income. I went to the kind of college where Peter Singer gives talks and students advertise HPMOR to total strangers. I saw a movie called Life in a Day. These are hard to replicate, except the last one, which anyone can do right now: The English (foreign language) subtitles seem broken, but English (full text) works. How the film works YouTube decided to make a documentary. They asked people to film themselves on July 24th, 2010, and share the footage. They received 80,000 submissions and 4500 hours of film from 192 countries. They used it to make a 90-minute film about life on Earth. We start and end at midnight. For each part of the day, we jump around the world to see what people are doing. Because people are similar, we see similar actions, in parallel. For example, the sun comes up eight minutes into the movie. For the next 90 seconds, we watch people wake up. Some have alarms; some have roosters; some rise with the sun. Some are woken up by parents or lovers. Others wake up alone. One person sleeps on the street and wakes to the passing of cars. Everyone is different. But we all wake up. Submitters also had the option to answer questions: "What do you love? What do you fear? What do you have in your pockets or handbag?" We get three minutes of fear (ten for love). People are afraid of ghosts, spiders, lions, and small noises in the middle of the night. They are afraid of God, Hell, and people different from themselves. They are afraid of losing childhood, losing their hair, and losing the people they love. We are all afraid of something. This is what Life in a Day shows, over and over: In so many ways, we are the same. What the film did to me This isn't a new idea. You can hear echoes of it in the Golden Rule, "all men are created equal", and "workers of the world, unite!". But I didn't really feel the idea until I saw Life in a Day, which conveys it more powerfully than anything else I've ever seen. I felt strange on the drive home; I could no longer look at the world in the same way. When I later heard about a philosophy that was dedicated to helping people as much as possible, no matter where they lived, it struck a chord. Without Life in a Day, I'm not sure I'd have felt the same deep sense of "yes, this is obviously righ...

Then, a few months later, crossed the pond to the US where she joined expedition partner Michelle Dvorak to become the first female pair this year to climb the Cassin Ridge on Denali, America's highest peak at almost 6200 meters.  Fay's love of the mountains brought her to Chamonix 7 years ago – and like many others before her, she only came for a season. So, what next for the young adventurer? This episode image of Stefanie Flippin effortlessly flying through the air truly epitomizes Hoka's slogan, 'Time To Fly'! Stefanie Flippin is a dynamo with a huge heart, and channels it to power through long days as a foot and ankle surgeon, pro-athlete for Hoka, running coach with Lift Run Perform, and someone deeply invested in her community. She developed her love for trails and the mountains running with her dad at 7-years-old, watching him float over the hills, then come back down to get her and finish together. It wasn't until medical school that Stefanie started taking her running seriously and it really helped relieve stress and gave her mind a break from studying. Running 20-milers late at night, after crazy long shifts at Cook County Hospital during residency with her now-husband Mitchell forged their partnership. Running in an exhausted, sleep-deprived state with brain fog, unknowingly building all of the tools she would need to become a rock star at the 100-mile distance. Stefanie is the 2021 USATF 100 Mile National Champion and 2-time Tunnel Hill winner (2020 & 2021), with a 14:04 100-mile PR—which breaks down to 8:26 per mile pace!!! Stefanie enjoys pushing herself to the absolute limit to learn what she's truly capable of—which she had the chance to see at the 2022 USATF 100 Mile race, where she hit some dark patches early on at mile 40, but powered through and rallied to make the podium with help from her amazing pit crew. Topics discussed include: Transformation over 100 miles, the individual journey, best practices, lessons learned, fueling—gear—mindset, med school/surgical residency, her husband Mitchell—partnership—PIT CREW MAGIC, coming back from the dead, giving your best not being tied to race result, overcoming imposter syndrome, self-belief, growth, journaling, coaching, helping her athletes with mindset & self-belief, community, giving back to patients, athletes, and the running community. Stefanie is a force of nature who cares deeply for her patients, athletes, and the running community. I enjoyed this convo immensely and learned so much from it! I hope you all enjoy this convo as much as we did! Happy birthday to us! It's a landmark episode for the Empire Podcast, folks, as we go 450 up. Due to the pandemic, this episode isn't a live show, as had been originally intended, but that will happen, we promise you. But it's a cracking episode, as Chris Hewitt, James Dyer, and Helen O'Hara take a little trip down memory lane to recall the early days of the pod. Then they also discuss the best stock market movies, indulge in a lightning round of the Three Fact Structure, discuss the week's movie news, including the Golden Globes nominations, and review Greenland, Malcolm And Marie, and Bliss. Our guests this week are two fantastic British directors. First, Kevin Macdonald, director of Life In A Day 2020, tells Chris all about how he made the ultimate crowd-sourced movie, and then old pod friend Paul Greengrass has a natter with Chris about his new movie, News Of The World. And if you've ever wanted to hear Paul Greengrass quote Step Brothers, this is the pod for you! Enjoy.

The Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald discusses his follow-up to his YouTube film Life In A Day from 2010, where he invited the public to upload their own footage of their lives taken on one specific day. He then edited those contributions to create a finished film to tell the story of a single day on Earth. For Life In A Day 2020 he received over 320,000 submissions from nearly 200 countries. Jakuta Alikavazovic is a Prix Goncourt winning French writer of Bosnian and Montenegrin origins. She talks to John Wilson about her new novel Night As It Falls which explores themes of identity, first love, class and contemporary anxiety against the backdrop of the war in the former Yugoslavia and is out in English this week. As part of our ongoing mission to bring a bit of artistic light to the darkness, we’ve been hearing about some Moments of Joy – those sudden, intense moments watching a play or a film, reading, listening to music or looking at a work of art, when your heart soars. Critic Hanna Flint's choice is a scene from the film Blinded by the Light – with a soundtrack by the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. Continuing the theme, February 2nd is Candlemas, the celebration of the infant Christ's presentation in the Temple, and the coming of light, when all the candles needed for the year were brought into the church, and blessed. Poets have been drawn to the subject - Robert Herrick, T. S. Eliot and Amy Clampitt - all writing Candlemas poems. There are a number of Candlemas customs and sayings - about how the weather at Candlemas predicts the coming season, for instance. The Cornish poet Charles Causley incorporates one of these into his poem, At Candlemas, with which we end Front Row, in a setting by the Dartmoor singer, and relative of the poet, Jim Causley. *“The film was made in this amazing period in YouTube’s history where we were focused on how we could demonstrate the ways in which technology can be both innovative and net positive—how it was driving new ways of storytelling and building community.” - Sara Pollack * This episode we talk to YouTube's first film community manager, Sara Pollack, to learn more about a film YouTube made called "Life in a Day." On July 24, 2010, thousands of people around the world uploaded videos of their lives to YouTube to create Life in a Day, a cinematic experiment to document a single day on earth. All in all, 80,000 submissions containing over 4,500 hours of footage from 192 nations were edited into one 90-minute film of raw, first-person scenes from real people around the globe, echoing the experience of YouTube itself. To bring cohesion to the submissions, users were given a range of prompts from “What do you love?” and “What do you fear?” to “What’s in your pocket?” to respond to with their footage. Since the "Life in a Day"'s debut on the site in 2011, more than 15 million people have watched the film. (You can still watch it there today.) How did YouTube come up with the idea for the film? How did they get the word out to YouTubers and to the world? Why did they create a film in the first place? We called Sara to find out.

But what about the car journey to the holiday where everything started to go wrong? Or your first proper fight? Or that time you lied about where you'd been? It's a once in a lifetime chance to learn the truth. But if you had to be completely honest with the one you love, would you still play? For Esme and Tom, the game is about to begin. Devon and I on the Women Run Strong Panel before the 2017 London Marathon.  As if running 30-100 miles (often up mountains) isn't super human enough, imagine being one of the greatest ultra runners in the world. Well, Devon Yanko doesn't have to imagine it, she is one of the strongest ultra runners around.  I could sit here and list her many accolades (OK, I'll list a few--from placing third in the 2016 Western States 100 to qualifying for and competing in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials (CLICK HERE to see Devon's race highlights), Devon is known for kicking ass and taking names both on the roads and on the trails. But what I love about Devon isn't just that she knows how to run her heart out, it's that she runs with her heart. I know that sounds cheesy but I could sit and talk to Devon about life, running, set backs, break throughs, feeling defeated, inspired, or what it means to be a strong woman all day long. It's so rare to find professional athletes open up about what it's like to be a leader in the field and still have everything they say be so incredibly relatable. But with Devon, it doesn't matter if you're an ultra marathoner or if you just got bit by the running bug, she'll remind you that we all struggle. But if you take it one step at a time and invest in believing in yourself, you can't lose. CLICK HERE to watch Life In A Day, the incredible documentary shot during Western States. (It's incredible.)
