Between Cotton Jones, Page France, and his eponymous Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread, Maryland’s Michael Nau‘s built up one hell of an indie rock reputation over his career. Energetic magnetism, a 1909 prairie house, and train showers. Cornelia Murr “Cornelia Murr was born in London and resides in California as a dual citizen, but spent much of her childhood moving through the United States, from Colorado to Massachusetts, California to New York City and upstate New York. Working with producer Jim James of My Morning Jacket on her 2018 debut album Lake Tear of the Clouds, Murr conjured a hazy blend of folk and cosmic soul music, bringing to mind the fantasias of Broadcast, Stereolab's most pastoral moments, and the spooky romance of Beach House. She released the single “Hang Yr Hat” in 2021, inspired in part by the art of mime and the legendary Marcel Marceau, followed by the EP Corridor in November 2022, which No Depression describes “is as much an exploration of sparkling pop as it is a deeply felt mediation on the ache of being alive.” She has toured with such contemporaries as Rodrigo Amarante, Lucius, Michael Nau, and Dana Gavanski."

As twin brothers, Randy and Jason Sklar share identical genetic codes. Beyond that, they also share a keen understanding of the nature of songwriting, joke structure, and what it means to be an artist. Utilizing an almost telepathic connection to play their timing and delivery off of one another, the dynamic duo of post-modern humorists have had twice the impact on the world of comedy than any individual performer could hope for, having released four critically acclaimed comedy albums, two Comedy Central Half Hour Presents specials, and made appearances in countless shows on FX, HBO, and ESPN. They bring the bulk of their lifelong Wilco fandom and knowledge to bear in this episode, as is needed given the amount of backstory there is to cover behind the band's 2002 release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, broadly considered one of the best albums of this first part of the 21st century. Like a warm cup of coffee, Maryland folk musician Michael Nau’s music will simultaneously relax you with cozy folk vibes and invigorate you with vibrant, expressive lyrics. Formerly the frontman of Page France and Cotton Jones, Nau sounds like your really talented friend playing for you in the living room. In fact, Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread was recorded with friends in a one-bedroom apartment. That LP won’t be released until August 3rd of this year, but the first single, “Less Than Positive” is available now on iTunes. It’s a blissfully sweet love song that will have you toe-tapping along, even on a first listen. Much like other Nau songs, cheerful keys carry the tune and complement Nau’s soulful, uncomplicated vocals for a fully approachable, feel-good sound. Transcript [♪ ethereal music playing ♪] [CRIS CHEEK] This… is… Phantom Power. [MACK HAGOOD] Episode One. [CRIS] Dead Air. [RODRIGO TOSCANO] You know, silence… [JOHN BIGUENET] It’s like, uh, it’s like a vacuum… like a walkie-talkie, where you’ve gotta press the button to speak and let it go to hear. [CRIS] The signal drops out. [MACK] Hello, and thanks for joining us on Phantom Power, podcast about sound in the arts and humanities. Over the next six or seven episodes this season, we’ll be investigating how artists and scholars are thinking about sound, writing about sound, and using sound to make things. My name’s Mack Hagood, I’m a media scholar, a writer, and a musician. [CRIS] I’m cris cheek, I’m a poet. Sometimes a sound poet, sometimes an unsound poet. I’ve also done a lot of work with music over the years. And I’m gonna be learning a lot as we make this series in terms of thinking about listening and talking together. Sounds about sound. [MACK] And I don’t, I don’t know if this is ironic or fitting, but we’re starting off this first episode talking about silence. So today we sort of have a three parter. We’re thinking about the roles of silence, uh, in reading and writing, and we’re going to think about the dead air in the eye of a hurricane, this kind of silence that prestiges something terrible. And, um, then we’re going to think about silence as a disruption. You know, an interruption of your regularly scheduled broadcast, or what they call [CRIS] Dead air. [MACK] [laughing] So, cris, a long, long time ago, I was a 19 year old college student in New Orleans, Louisiana, at Loyola University. And I just took this, you know, intro English class with this professor named John Biguenet and he just made a huge impression on me, really started making me think in different ways. And then I went on with my life, and it turned out that this gentleman John Biguenet turned into a well known fiction writer, poet, playwright, um, he has written a collection of short stories called The Torturer’s Apprentice, which is just this sort of spellbinding collection that is a little bit Chekov, a little bit Kafka, a little bit Borges. Um, he’s won the O’Henry Award for Short Fiction, uh, he’s won a Harper’s Magazine Writing Award. He wrote this trilogy of plays about Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans. And now he’s written a book on silence, uh, for this series of short books that have titles like Bread, or, uh, Golf Ball. [laughing] So, just kind of thinking deeply about these quotidian objects in our everyday lives and John chose silence. I read it, it’s a terrific short book, I highly recommend it. And so the last time I was down in New Orleans, I went to his office and we had a terrific conversation. [♪ record crackles, loud bells chiming ♪] [JOHN] We may conjecture that somewhere in the cosmos, beyond the border of all human trace, a zone of silence awaits. [♪ bells chime again ♪] Always receding, of course, before the advance of future explorers. A great sea of stillness unperturbed by the animate. An utterly quiet virgin territory. As Republicans move forward with their tax overhaul, this week’s episode revisits Vanessa Williamson’s interview on the misconception that Americans hate taxes. She outlines how anti-tax policies became popular despite the fact that most Americans support increasing taxes for services they care about.
