Extrait : « … Justis Brokenrope has collected vinyl by Native musicians for the past decade. Now he shares that music with the digital world. “You can listen to music nowadays without ever touching a CD, a record, or a tape,” said Brokenrope, who is Sicangu Lakota. “It's just so digital and ubiquitous all the time. But to hold the physical thing and then to see yourself represented in that, and to see your community, your people, your family represented in that, I think that's just so important for us.” A self-described shaggy-haired kid, Justis Brokenrope started collecting vinyl records near his hometown in rural Nebraska. As a young musician, he played in punk and metal bands touring the U.S. and Europe. He was in a record store in Providence, R.I., about ten years ago where he found a compilation record consisting of Indigenous North American music, and inspiration struck. “I've heard a lot of powwow music and ceremonial music. But then to know that there were these artists back then, pre-social media, internet, everything, obviously, just in their really, sometimes small and very isolated communities,” explained Brokenrope.“They got a guitar somewhere or traded something for a guitar, and then their music was documented by something like the [Canadian Broadcast Corporation]. And so those records exist. And then that was just like, mind blowing to me,” said Brokenrope. Now, an entire wall of Brokenrope's Minneapolis apartment is dedicated to his record collection. Some of that music is being heard again for the first time. And he says he's collecting for more than the sake of collecting. He wants to re-introduce the music he's found back to Indigenous communities. “A lot of people obviously don't have the time to go dig through a bunch of thrift stores in the Southwest,” said Brokenrope. When he finds those rare records, he posts them to social media. Curated music sets go to YouTube, and photos of album covers are posted to his Instagram page, Wathéča Records. For him, accessibility is a way to build community around music. He estimates he has a collection of about 300 records by Indigenous artists from various genres— mostly country, folk, rock from the 1960s through the late 80s. “These records can have life again and reach the people that maybe forgot about them or lost their copy. Or those folks who made them have journeyed on, but their kids are still around and remember their dad or mom playing guitar and singing.” Brokenrope says for him artists like Buddy Red Bow, a Lakota country singer who was recording in the 1970s, is one example of the kind connection a person can make through listening. “As someone who works a lot with language to hear him speak or sing a song in Lakota and English and then to hear his dad on the recording as well singing in Lakota or speaking ... it's just so moving and just a beautiful thing to experience.” Translating Analog to Digital Collecting vinyl brings Brokenrope into conversation with a lot of fellow record collectors. It's an opportunity to build a network of people who share his passion. On a January evening, Brokenrope met with a fellow Indigenous collector, David McCloud, who is Anishinaabe from Minegoziibe First Nation in northern Manitoba. “When somebody asks me, ‘How do you collect Indigenous records?'” said McCloud to Brokenrope. “That's years and years of building relationships.” The two compared notes during their virtual meeting about their shared passion. The conversation included their mutual appreciation for music and much more. Both described years spent digging for vinyl and multiple acts of converting analog music to digital as a method of translation between generations. They also talk about the ways Indigenous musicians have busted through the myths of Indigenous people as the vanishing American and the ways artists have subverted stereotypes and found self-expression. “Our people were supposed to disappear,” said McCloud. “If you look at the history of it, since the possibility of recording began, Indigenous people were there, right up until now.” McCloud motioned to his own collection of recordings and shared a piece of wisdom. “You never finish. You never know it all. You're never gonna have it all,” McCloud said. Click here.https://youtube.com/shorts/pzhye1ZzsnM?si=Qx9suBpTUfoKRCfZDJing in the Dakota language On a Friday evening in early March, Brokenrope plays a set of deep cuts inside a St. Paul record store. DJing has become another way Brokenrope shares his love for vinyl. Music lovers will recognize Link Wray and His Ray Men covering Dylan's “Girl from The North Country.” Fellow collectors may know Karen Dalton's bluesy “Something On Your Mind.” Lots of people will hum along to popular Redbone refrains. The powwow crowd will sing every single word of Keith Secola's “NDN Kars.” And it's the dollar bin gems — the stuff lots of people may have heard years ago or may have never heard before — where his collection shines. Brokenrope's collection reflects years of digging for rare vinyl recordings. In his set, A. Paul Ortega's powerful singing on “Chicago,” Arliene Nofchissey Williams & Carnes Burson performing the bridge on “Go My Son,” and Morris Belknap's “On That Dusty Road To San Carlos,” give listeners a sense of the themes important to Native musicians over decades. While connecting the tunes during his DJ sets, Brokenrope adds another act of translation. As an educator, Brokenrope has been a part of a growing language movement to revitalize the Dakota language. He often DJs his sets in the Dakota language. Sharing music of from his collection in Dakota is an invitation to Indigenous people to be in conversation with one another in a digital world. “To be able to use my tribe's language and be able to create more content in it,” he said. “And have that represented more, just felt really in line with the kind of music we're playing.”

LADIES OF THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME LACY J DALTON Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem; October 13, 1946)[1] is an American country music singer and songwriter. She is known for her gritty, powerful vocals, which People Magazine likened to a country equivalent of Bonnie Raitt.[2] Dalton had a number of hits in the 1980s, including "Takin' It Easy", "Crazy Blue Eyes", and "16th Avenue". Though absent from the U.S. country charts since 1990, she still continues to record and perform, having most recently released three independently recorded albums: Wild Horse Crossing on Shop Records in 1999; The Last Wild Place on Song Dog Records in 2004; and her 2010 self-released Here's To Hank.[3] When asked about her musical influences, she replied: "Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Janis Joplin, Robert Johnson, Karen Dalton, Fred Koller, Big Mama Thornton, Billie Holiday, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette and J. J. Cale."[4] SYLVIA Sylvia Jane Hutton (née Kirby, born December 9, 1956[1]), also known mononymously as Sylvia, is an American country music and country pop singer and songwriter.[2] Her biggest hit (a crossover chart topper), was her single "Nobody" in 1982.[3] It reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 5 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, number 9 on the Cashbox Top 100, and number 1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart. The song earned her a gold record certification and a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Her other country chart hits include "Drifter" (number one in 1981), "Fallin' in Love", "Tumbleweed" and "Snapshot". She was named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music for 1982. She is also credited with making the first "concept" music video clip to air on Country Music Television (CMT), with "The Matador".
"Entelechy" The work of the Ohio-born Sandy Bell is pure magic. I guess by now, you're getting the feeling I'm a big admirer of what she does. But the work that we're talking about which is so effortless and beautiful, was hard-fought and the journey to get where we are today with Sandy's songs, was fraught with some pretty heavy stuff. We'll let her tell you all about that, but along the way, she went West as many do, and along the way found herself writing songs with Jeff Buckley, which many....don't. She also fronted a band that was on the cusp of some potential '90s glory before she ghosted them, and as she dug her heels into L.A. life, she was also battling deeply serious addiction issues and for a while slipped way off the grid and was living off Hollywood Blvd and grappling with demons that were in a full-time flex of trying to destroy her. But they didn't. Moving to New York with her partner and producer Jeff Lipstein, Bell was revived, rejuvenated and ready to be the artist she was meant to. Her first album When I Leave Ohio is a stone cold stunner--it has the stillness of a Hopper painting and all the raw loneliness of Nick Drake. The follow up, Entelechy, which is a phrase borrowed from Aristotle, which refers to ‘'That which realizes or makes actual what is otherwise merely potential," is, quite simply, one of the best records you'll ever hear. Atmospheric, mesmeric and emotive, Entelechy is a textured song cycle that explores devastation and darkness with the probing eye of a philosopher and the atmospheric lens of a filmmaker. In other words, think David Lynch collaborating with Plato on music that sounds like Karen Dalton fronting the Bad Seeds. It's regenerative, restorative, terrifying, comforting and powered by an enormous heart that beats with hope. Sandy has collaborated with everyone from Rachel Yamagata to Bat For Lashes and now, she's collaborating with us. www.sandybell.com (http://www.sandybell.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.embersarts.com (http://www.embersarts.com) Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Howard Fishman's To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse (Dutton, 2023) is a fascinating hybrid biography that weaves together Fishman's own odyssey of research with the surprising life story he uncovers. Connie Converse was a gifted songwriter whose music came to public notice more than fifty years after it was recorded. Her album How Sad, How Lovely has taken its place alongside albums by rediscovered artists like Karen Dalton, Kath Bloom, and Sibylle Baier. In Converse's case, though, it was not only her music that disappeared. Following a series of personal and professional crises, Converse drove away from her home in Ann Arbor, never to be heard from again. When Fishman visited Ann Arbor to meet Converse's brother, he was shown an archive of several filing cabinets that revealed Converse as much more than a singer and guitarist. She composed art songs, song cycles, and operas. She was also managing editor at the Journal for Conflict Studies and authored a pioneering analysis of structural racism. To Anyone Who Ever Asks gives us a fuller portrait of Converse than has ever before been available, even as it reveals the many gaps that remain in her story. Andy Boyd is a playwright based in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of the playwriting MFA at Columbia University, Harvard University, and the Arizona School for the Arts. 1. When Kara Dohrenwend moved to Moab in the early 1990s, she remembers the creek system in town was basically invisible, covered in invasive plant species like tamarisk and Russian olive. With a background in community-driven design and restoration work, Dohrenwend quickly got involved. She's now worked for over two decades restoring the creek ecosystem. All these years later, it remains fascinating to her. Even after Mill Creek plotted its course through her own home one day this summer. “I have actually joked that Mill Creek really did go out of its way to flood my house. It really did. It went uphill.” Plus, the Great Salt Lake reached record lows this year and Utah lawmakers are scrambling for solutions. // Show Notes: // Photo: Kara Dohrenwend, executive director of Rim to Rim Restoration, in Mill Creek. Dohrenwend personally mapped how the creek's water moved through downtown during the big flood this August. // If you think there's someone or somewhere we should profile with an audio portrait, please reach out to news@kzmu.org // Rim to Rim Restoration https://revegetation.org.customers.tigertech.net // Music in Today's Audio Portrait: // ‘Tune on Karen Dalton's Guitar' by Peter Walker live at WFMU on Irene Trudel's Show, ‘It Is What It Is' by Peter Biedermann live at WFMU on Irene Trudel's Show // Sounds In Today's Audio Portrait: ‘THUNDER/Rain low frequencies 4-CHANNEL-48kHz' by BlueDelta, ‘Elbow River 220530_01' by Robert.Crosley, ‘Field-recording – Nature – Creek' by quetzalcontla // Mountain West News Bureau: To save the drying Great Salt Lake, officials must preserve the largest river that feeds it https://www.boisestatepublicradio.org/environment/2022-11-21/to-save-the-drying-great-salt-lake-officials-must-preserve-the-largest-river-that-feeds-it
Kim Althea Gordon (born April 28, 1953) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the bassist, guitarist, and vocalist of alternative rock band Sonic Youth. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Woodstock, New York via North Carolina singer-songwriter Kenny Roby. Roby is the former lead singer of 6 String Drag, which he formed with bassist Rob Keller in the early 1990s, a band which quickly became one of the more notable bands of the Americana movement. The band's style ranged from old style country with a hint of soul and gospel to rock. While 6 String Drag broke up in the late 1990s, Roby continues to make records and play live shows with the Mercy Filter, which includes Scott McCall of $2 Pistols. Roby has released seven solo albums, his latest album — the focus of the episode — is self-titled and written and recorded in Woodstock, NY. Throughout Kenny Roby, the gifted storyteller embraces the spirits of songwriters who once inhabited the very same hills like Fred Neil, Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton, Bobby Charles, Levon Helm and, of course, Bob Dylan. Over the album's dozen tracks, Roby — supported by a cast including Daniel Littleton (guitars), Jeff Hill (bass), Tony Leone (drums) and superb guest vocals from Amy Helm and the legendary John Sebastian on harmonica — takes us on a sprawling walk through the neighborhood of his mind. In this episode host Michael Shields and Kenny Roby discuss Kenny Roby's genesis and the themes present in the album. They talk about the outstanding players on the album such as Amy Helm and John Sebastian while exploring how living in Woodstock, New York led to who contributed to the album's enthralling sound. They discuss Roby's friendship and working relationship with Neal Casal and the gifts that deep acquaintanceship still award Roby, and so much more. Today on the show: It was like the wild west... That was just one description given to a video that is circulating via WhatsApp, depicting a violent brawl that broke out on the streets of Galway city over the weekend. Galway Talks has received the video which shows two groups of men in Eyre Square take part in a fight which sees a number of them assaulted while lying on the ground. Councillor Niall McNeilis spoke to Keith about this issue. Today sees the beginning of the Westside Arts Festival in Galway city. To give us some of the details of the events that will be taking place during the next four days, Keith was joined by James Coyne, Chief Executive Officer of Westside Resource Centre. Niamh Regan is a critically–acclaimed songwriter from Co. Galway. Her songs seamlessly weave the intimacy of the Irish lyrical tradition with the expansive breadth of American songwriters such as Karen Dalton, Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell. The resulting sound is entirely her own. Her debut album Hemet announced her arrival as one of the most distinctive songwriters in Ireland today. Earning nominations for both the RTÉ Folk Awards and the Choice Awards ‘Album of the Year', the LP received soaring praise which led to performances on The Late Late Show, Other Voices and La Blogothèque. Keith interviewed Niamh on the show and we had a piece of music called Late Nights from her.
Herbie adams is a brilliant entertainer. We met back in the 1990's in Devon, I was 22 and just turned pro 25 years ago so we have known each other on and off over a quarter of a century. We may see each other once every 5 years but when we do we have a nice catch up, its natural and todays is only different in the fact that I recorded it.Herbie is unique, he's fresh and funny and has that powerful persona on stage, the likable factor, that audiences warm too. So getting to know him that bit more today surprised me with his past. I had no idea of his history of being in bands and supporting groups like Supergrass. He literally has grafted and deserves success. From working with his band to going solo around the world in the cruise industry to pantomime he found the funny and he's keeping it that way, welcome to Eyes & Teeth The Voice of God Herbie Adams
