I started training in martial arts in 2017, training in Aikido with Airenjuku at SOAS University. I trained there for 2.5 years (achieving 3rd Kyu) before I caught the Karate bug when I began training with the renowned Prof Stephen Chan at SOAS Jindokai club. Although the training in both clubs was of a high, traditional standard, I made the decision to develop my skills in practical self-defence. Having trained for a while with Urban Krav Maga Instructor Stewart McGill (of Martial Arts Illustrated Hall of Fame), I had a vague idea of practical self-defence, but also missed the discipline of traditional martial arts. https://www.totalshotokankarate.uk/ Don't forget to grab your Karate Journal to document your journey: Amazon Karate Journal Link: https://amzn.to/3l9spmt If you found value in this episode or enjoyed it, please consider sharing it with your friends on social media. Sensuous Knowledge - A Conversation with Minna Salami

This strange thing called ‘knowledge' has always been a battleground in educational conversations - for example, in lots of loud calls for “knowledge-rich” curricula! Personally I'm very much in favour of knowledge and knowing, part of the buzz of following curiosity and inquiries! It's just the KIND of knowledge and knowing that we have been conditioned to value over others that I have an issue with! Minna Salami has been deeply challenging this hierarchy of knowing through her extensive work and amazing concept and book of the same title, Sensuous Knowledge. Her work coming from the tradition of African Feminism is to trouble the hierarchies, not simply invert them. Minna Salami is a Nigerian-Finnish and Swedish feminist author, social critic and currently Program Chair at THE NEW INSTITUTE. She is the author of Can Feminism Be African? (forthcoming Harper Collins) and Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone (Bloomsbury 2020) which has been translated into multiple languages.  Minna has also co-authored children's books and written content on feminism for numerous anthologies as well as educational textbooks. A leading voice of contemporary feminism, she has drawn over a million readers to her multiple award-winning blog MsAfropolitan.com. Her writing can be found in the Guardian, Project Syndicate, Al Jazeera, and The Philosopher, and many others. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer including at some of the world's most prominent institutions such as the UN, EU, Oxford Union, Cambridge Union, Yale University, and the Singularity University at NASA. She has worked as a Research Associate and Editor at Perspectiva, consulted governments on gender equality, written school curricula, and curated cultural events at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Minna is a Full Member of the Club of Rome, a BMW Foundation Responsible Leader and sits on the council of The Royal Institute of Philosophy and the boards of The African Feminist Initiative at Pennsylvania State University, The Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Sahel, and is an associate with Perspectiva. She has served as chair for the House of Beautiful Business, a judge for the One World Media Awards, a nominator for the Prince Claus Foundation and the Princess of Asturias Foundation. An alumni of Lund University and SOAS University, Minna has lived in Nigeria, Sweden, Spain, and New York and now lives between London and Hamburg. Andrew Wong is the chef of the two Michelin star restaurant A.Wong in London, England. Andrew grew up working in his parents' restaurant, a straightforward Cantonese restaurant called Kym's, and had no desire to go into the restaurant business. He went to Oxford to study chemistry, then switched to social anthropology, and then his father passed, so he jumped back into to the restaurant business to help his mother. He started to think about the relationship between food and culture and started visiting China and exploring its regional cuisines. Eventually, he re-imagined the restaurant around these cuisines. In our conversation, we discuss how this all came to be, and what his mindset was going into it. He continues researching regional Chinese recipes, texts and artwork through SOAS University, much of which he talks about alongside food anthropologist Dr Mukta Das on his podcastXO Soused. How should the world engage with the Taliban?

Two years ago the Taliban swept into Kabul and took control of Afghanistan, almost exactly twenty years after they were ousted by the US-led invasion after 9/11. The West has since deployed sanctions to put pressure on the regime - but to no visible effect, beyond worsening the number of people struggling to afford to eat. As the Taliban have consolidated their control of the country, they have dramatically reversed many of the rights and opportunities Afghan women have enjoyed. Can the world engage with the Taliban while also keeping up the pressure on it to reverse what the UN calls its “gender apartheid”? Is isolation the way to convince a group which craves global recognition that its attitude to women is costing Afghanistan dearly? Shaun Ley is joined by: Michael Keating, Executive Director at the European Institute of Peace, a conflict resolution organisation based in Brussels that works with the European Union and civil society. He is the former UN deputy envoy and humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan. Orzala Nemat, Afghan scholar and Research Associate at SOAS University, and the former director of the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU), a think tank in Afghanistan Sahar Fetrat, researcher in the Women's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch. Also featuring: BBC Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid Produced by Alba Morgade and Neggeen Sadid. What happens when a dictator uses drug trafficking as a tool of diplomacy? The psychoactive drug known as Captagon has exploded across the Middle East and Europe, leading many countries to clasify it as an ‘epidemic'. The highly-addictive pill used to be made in Turkey and Latin America, but that slowly changed after the Syrian Civil War. Today, 80% of the global supplies come from Syria, and many have accused Bashar al-Assad of using the drug to generate billions in revenue for the government, bypassing sanctions, and to put pressure on his neighbours to resume diplomatic ties. That gambit seems to have paid off in May when, after more than 10 years, Syria was welcomed back into the Arab League. In this week's episode of The Big Picture, we sit down with Dr Lina Khatib, head of the Middle East Institute at SOAS University. Ann has been practising yoga and meditation for nearly 20 years and has since completed her Masters in the Traditions of Yoga and Meditation from SOAS University with ongoing Sanskrit training. Her own experiences have pointed her toward a phenomenological investigation of the parallels between spontaneous Kuṇḍalinī awakenings and Buddhist and Yogic paths to enlightenment as well as cutting-edge consciousness theory. To draw sense from the varieties of extraordinary human experiences that can occur spontaneously, Ann studies metaphysical frameworks within the traditions of Yoga, Tantra and Buddhism in a scholarly context. Her previous research focuses on the phenomenology of Buddhist and Yogic experiences through meditative practice. Her mission is to gain a deeper understanding of the psychological processes that can arise from spontaneous transpersonal experiences or deep meditation practice and how we can draw on thousands of years of collective experiences to safely support others walking this path towards greater wholeness. Hate something? Change something!Born at the beginning of the 60s, Stewart experienced the hippy revolution, punk rock, new wave, two tone, reggae and much more in the diverse politicised atmosphere of Thatcherist Britain. Leading a wild, nihilistic, and hedonostic lifestyle led him to a multitude of years and experiences with hallucinogenics, shamanism and ethnobotany both recreationally and spiritually. The new age travellers and the second summer of love in the UK, where Rave and Ecstacy redefined alternative culture and reinvigorated the esoteric arts, which kindled an interest in buddhism and yoga in Stewart. Following a severe back injury Stewart experienced an amazing recovery through intensive Astanga Vinyasa Mysore yoga practice.Stewart's sadhana led him toward an extensive yoga education with teachers from around the world who have had a profound effect on his style of teaching.A devoted activist in a wide range of issues: the Arms trade and nuclear disarmament, human and animal rights, environmental and ecological issues, anti-racist/fascist, pro LGBTQ, anti capitalist and anti poverty. He spent 10 years as a youth worker and teacher within the voluntary sector before training as a Lawyer in inner city London. Stewart relates his radical traditionalist approach to Yoga to include these important modern issues and his experiences therein. With great respect to the founders for their activism in animal rights he qualified as a Jivamukti teacher in 2003 and since has taught extensively in London and worldwide with annual retreats workshops in India and Sri Lanka. [TW: discussion around suicide] This week's guest, Ramla Ali, is the first Somali boxer ever to compete at the Olympic Games. Ramla was born in Mogadishu, shortly before the outbreak of a brutal civil war. After her eldest brother was killed by a grenade while playing in the garden, the family embarked on a perilous journey to leave - first to Kenya, where they survived on Unicef food rations, and later to the UK where they claimed asylum.  In London, Ramla first took up boxing to lose weight while a teenager, and tried to keep it a secret from her Muslim relatives. But her love of boxing was stronger than any family disapproval, and she kept at it, winning her first fight in 2011.  Since then she's graduated with a First in Law from SOAS University in London, become an Elle covergirl (she models part-time to make enough money to support her boxing career) and written her first book: Not Without A Fight, which is out tomorrow. Ramla joins me to talk about her failures as a bullied teenager at school, her failure to win an Olympic medal and her failure to be there for her best friend Danika when she was going through severe mental health issues. It's a brave and honest discussion that reflects Ramla's courage in the ring as well as out of it. -- Not Without A Fight: Ten Steps to Becoming Your Own Champion by Ramla Ali is out tomorrow and available to preorder here. -- My new novel, Magpie, is out now. Sara talks about what we understand essential work to be, and how the pandemic has highlighted that some workers have been absolutely necessary for the continuation of some aspects of life. Yet she unpacks how the term essential workers is loaded, considering the discourses involved deciding who is essential and who is not, stressing that this raises fundamental questions as to how governments have used the term for political motivations and ends.   PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO THE CHANNEL to get the latest and most fascinating research!!! https://www.patreon.com/user?u=31723331   Welcome to The Know Show.  The Know Show is a podcast that aims to make sense of the world, one guest at a time. Hosted by former private tutor Hussain, we break down mind-boggling academic research and challenge authors on their work.  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today's subject is one that's special to me personally. That's because we're talking about ancient Mesopotamia, which is located in my native Iraq. My guest is the erudite Prof. Andrew George of SOAS University. Andrew most notably worked on developing and authoring the translation of The Epic of Gilgamesh - which is the oldest poem known to man. His translation to date has sold a remarkable 250,000 copies. But what is more fascinating about Andrew's work is how much in depth research he has done on the original tablets that date back several thousand years. This episode is one full of amazing stories of the past. Andrew gives us his insights on the Epic of Gilgamesh and what it means to us as humans when faced with the reality that we are mortal beings!
