Who are you outside of what you do? If things went out of your plan, how would you face life and remain on the winning path?   We may make our plans, but God has the final say, and He directs our paths. The human mind has a finite ability to determine the future. However, we can never envisage certain circumstances that the future might give us, such as accidents and mistakes. When bumping into the misfortunes of life, most of us often get discouraged and drown ourselves in all of the negative thoughts, thinking we're a failure. But let us realize that we are more than what we do.    Since we don't have a hold of the future, we must consider preparing ourselves for what lies ahead. For instance, on the athletic field, athletes may encounter an injury that could alter their career or maybe lead to early retirement. Therefore, we must figure out who we are and who we can be outside our expertise. Moreover, we must treasure every opportunity we have and never use our platforms for selfish ambitions. Despite our troubles, we must not focus on gaining but on adding value to people around us because, as we do, we make ourselves more valuable in their lives. As our guest speaker said, "whatever you're going through in life, in the middle of your mess, don't miss your message."   Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr. is an athlete, author, inspirational speaker, entrepreneur, and certified Athlete Mental Health advocate. He is the founder and creator of Sports Life Business. Derrick saw himself as another kid who wanted a better life and knew sports, particularly football, would serve as a vehicle to a better life. After growing up with much adversity, he began working towards shifting his perspective from a temporary experience of playing on the field to a permanent purpose of serving those who currently and formerly played sports. Today, Derrick travels across the United States, sharing his story with the hope of empowering others never to yield when facing adversity. He is a proud graduate of the University of Tennessee, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies and his Master of Science degree in Sports Psychology.   In this special episode with Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr., we'll learn about a man who grew up in a challenging environment. It gave him a winning edge in work, mindset, and preparation far from the norm. He will be sharing with us his inspiring journey of how he overcome the unpleasant habit of focusing on selfish ambitions, purpose, and goals.    "Whatever you're growing through, it's preparing you for where you're going. So, you have to realize that where you're at, you have not always been there and where you are, you don't have to necessarily always stay there." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:00:16) Introducing our special guest, Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr. (00:00:30) Advertisement: Obtain financial freedom with passive income! Now it's back at ground zero with no offers, no opportunities, and nothing at the table with me. That was the wakeup call that shook me because that wasn't in my plans." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "And I remember the Lord saying, I gave you that stage for glorifying my kingdom, and you used it for your selfish ambition, purpose, and goals. So, I had to take that away to get your attention." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "I remember our first coach said, "look to your right, look to your left, half of you all won't be here when it's time to graduate." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "Not focusing on my purposes and goals and just working on adding value to those I was associated with and with whom I was associated. And that was the biggest blessing in disguise when I stopped focusing on myself." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "If all left fails and this next level doesn't work out, the game has given me some tangible transferable skills that I can apply in my life after sports." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "A lot of athletes could have success in their life after sports if they are to figure out what those intangible transfer of skills is." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "A lot of times, it's figuring out who you are outside of what you do. Because as an athlete, at first you never have to think about who you are outside of what you do." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "There's no way any athlete should transition into life after sport without having a transition formula. And it was pretty simple figuring out all those things that you were good at, good, bad, ugly, indifferent. What can you take away from all those lessons the game gave you?" -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "The moment you start adding value and giving people what they want, you start getting the things you want." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   "Whatever you're going through in life, in the middle of your mess, don't miss your message." -Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.   Connect with Mr. Derrick Furlow Jr.: Website: https://derrickfurlow.com/; https://www.sportslifebusiness.com/order-form27970028 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sportslifebusiness Twitter: https://twitter.com/DerrickFurlowJr Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/derrickfurlowjr/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrickfurlowjr/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClB_lOzchtq5AflRwOG0p4Q/featured    Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. The “Get Out of Arkansas” Plan! Nothing against Arkansas, but my guest today on the #MakeYourMark podcast, Derrick Furlow Jr., made a commitment to overcome a severe injury in football, attend a top college program, and be able to provide for himself and his family for years to come. Hear about the obstacles he has overcome to become a leader in helping athletes transition out of their sport.   “Getting out of the operating room, I had this brace on my left leg, and when I touched it I asked, ‘Hey doc what’s this brace on my leg?’. His reply changed my life forever, ‘the brace is for your ACL’. It wasn’t even torn! In that moment I became obsolete on the football landscape; my dreams, my goals, everything I’ve been working on had been taken away. I remember one day crying, sitting on my bed, using this machine to rehab, and I heard this voice saying ‘I gave you this football stage for the glorification of my kingdom and you are using that stage for your own purposes, so I had to take it away to get your attention’, and that moment my life changed forever, because it gave me a different perspective.”   If you join Derrick and I in a room full of current and former athletes, we’ll show you how to leverage your athletic skill set into business success. Derrick can show you the mindset needed using his college football background experiences, and I’ll follow it up with the how to’s on getting in front of the right people in business and entrepreneurship to get you to that higher level. Make sure you give this one a listen, it’s non-stop energy and advice!   “The crazy thing is that I was with the number one recruiting class in the country. I had to prove why I was there.  This was not the road I thought I was going to take, there were a lot of undefined things I had to redefine. I hadn’t played a game in a year, the stadium seats 107,000 people, and I have to prove this to myself and to the coaches. I didn’t have the easy route. I knew what I had to do to get to that point, I had to do what I expected to do, and I exceeded it.”   Derrick is such an engaging, funny, caring and knowledgeable guy, and has lots of great advice for you, happy listening!   “I sat down and asked myself, ‘What made me a leader in sports? What did I do to make me one of the best of the best?’ And I thought, we learned our playbook and we studied our opponents. So we’re going to see different scenarios and we’re going to practice it, and it is going to be recorded. While we watch it we’ll make adjustments and corrections, and then we’re going to go back and practice again. So the next day we know what to say, or not to say. I started doing this on a regular basis, I became really good at selling, and I could duplicate it. Sure enough my sales started to go up, my sales team started to go up, and it became really easy.”   “Sports gives you the opportunity of controlling the environment. You watch it and you can take things from it. Athletes who people look up to and admire, you can take things from them and apply them directly to your life and achieve the same level of success in your life and your business.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction - 01:24 Growing up in Georgia - 03:23 Rapper or Sports? - 06:35 Rush for 2200 Yards, and Live Happily Ever After - 09:40 To control Freedom and Control my Happiness - 12:50 Junior to Senior year - 14:35 Obsolete on the Football Landscape - 16:38 A Different Perspective in Life - 17:50 Deciding My Future after the Injury - 20:45 Taking the Difficult Route - 21:54 Focusing on Something Bigger than Me - 26:26 Start Preparing Before the Moment Hits - 32:55 Torn ACL Leads to Uncertain Future - 36:19 Relevant tools, from Sales to Real Life - 38:00 What the Game Taught Me vs What I Gave the Game - 40:35 Decode Your Own Message - 44:45 Struggling After Sports - 47:48 What Athletes Bring to the Table - 49:13 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 52:24 How to get involved Be sure to connect with me on Social Media @MarkMoyerCoach and go to my website, www.markmoyer.com to get access to the tips and strategies that my coaching clients get directly. Heads 'N Tales Podcast - Talking Sports Injury Rehab, Prevention, Perseverance, Concussions & Athlete Transition

I hung onto my athlete identity for far longer than I should have after suffering a career-ending injury in a high school football game.  For years I attempted to hold onto something that I knew was over when my surgeon told me I would never set foot on a football field again.  When he told me that, my platform for proving my worth to the world was gone.  This is a very scary and lonely place for athletes to be.  I wish I could have talked to episode 109 guest and former Tennessee Volunteer, Derrick Furlow Jr. back in 2007 to learn how to translate the same qualities that made me a successful athlete into a success in other areas of my life.  At one point during our interview, Derrick said that sports are "a temporary platform for a permanent purpose."  Sports end for everyone, but success and happiness don't need to after your athletic career does.  Derrick provides us with a roadmap on how to transition like a champion in his new book Whats Next?  Topics of conversation from episode 109 are listed below: Where the inspiration for writing Whats Next? How to Transition Like a Champion came from. Why non-athletes can also benefit from this book. The struggles Derrick has seen a lot of his teammates and friends go through in their transitions. How Derrick helps athletes apply lessons they learned in sports to the next phase of their life and applying skillsets. What happened when Derrick sent text messages to 100 guys and 100 females asking what they learned from sports.  "If you cant manage small paper, you can't manage tall paper" Why it is important to learn how to manage money even when you don’t have a lot of money. The story of Derrick’s ACL injury which forced him to miss his senior season of high school football and the translatable skills learned from that experience. The role that faith played in Derrick's life and athletic career and why adversity forces you to listen to God's plan. Derrick’s strategy for earning a scholarship at the University of Tennessee and the power of adding value in every facet of your life. Inky Johnson’s Injury (below) and the impact it had on Derrick and his teammates.  Inky is definitely someone we need to have on the show in 2018!
