Today's guest knows endurance—on the trail, in public service, and in life.Congressman Mark DeSaulnier of California has run 23 marathons, including Boston, New York, Napa, and even Paris.A former lacrosse player turned lifelong runner, Mark once pursued a sub-3-hour marathon while simultaneously trying to bench press twice his bodyweight. He came heartbreakingly close—twice clocking a 3:04—and carried that same grit with him into politics, business, and recovery from a life-threatening illness. In March 2020, Mark fell during a run in D.C. and sustained broken ribs. What followed was a terrifying cascade: a damaged spleen, undiagnosed pneumonia, organ failure, and five weeks in the ICU—four of them on a ventilator. His odds of survival? Just 10 percent; one doctor told his sons he wouldn't make it. But he beat them. Now serving in his 11th year in Congress, Rep. DeSaulnier brings that same sense of perseverance to his work on transportation, education, and mental health. He currently serves as Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committeeand is a senior member of the Education & the Workforce Committee. But this episode isn't about politics. It's about what happens when we lace up and head out the door—what running teaches us, what it heals, and how it transforms who we are.In today's conversation, Mark takes me through his running journey and pursuits, insights from his 23 marathons, running a 3:04 marathon back in the day, becoming known as the “running politician,” how he used to train back in the day, and how running saved his life - literally. Welcome to Jake's Happy Nostalgia Show, the podcast where nostalgia comes alive! On today's episode, we're joined by the incredibly talented dancer, singer, and musician Ryan Desaulnier! Originally from Canada, Ryan began his career performing in a variety of productions for the Stratford Festival before making the move to Australia, where he starred in the musical Evie & the Birdman, written by composer and songwriter John Field. That opportunity led him to work with one of the most beloved children's entertainment groups of all time—The Wiggles, from 2001 to 2007, where he performed on-screen and on-stage as a Wiggly Dancer, provided backing vocals for several albums and portrayed the role of Gallant George in The Wiggles' fifth television series! He was also an occasional understudy for several members of the group. After his time with The Wiggles, Ryan continued collaborating with John Field on various musical projects, started the rock band The Vinyl Edge, and remains active in the entertainment industry today. Now back in Canada, he's still pursuing his passion for performance.

Summer travel season is approaching, but after months of headlines about safety issues on airplanes, some travelers may be questioning whether air travel is the best bet. Marisa and Scott are joined by East Bay Congressman Mark DeSaulnier who has some thoughts on the matter after years of digging into aviation safety.
The United States faces a looming debt crisis, and one Bay Area member of Congress may hold the key to averting it. The country could run out of money to pay its bills by the start of June, unless Congress agrees to raise the debt ceiling. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and his Republican caucus are insisting on steep cuts in spending in exchange for raising the debt limit, and they're at an impasse with the Democrats and President Biden, who will meet next week with the Big Four Congressional leaders, including Speaker McCarthy, to try to hammer out a deal. But meanwhile, Democrats have quietly been pursuing an alternative solution, and it hinges on a bill that is their secret weapon, known as a “discharge petition”, written by none other than East Bay Democrat Mark DeSaulnier, the Congressman from Concord. Congressman DeSaulnier joined KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart, Patti Reising, and KCBS Radio's Political Reporter Doug Sovern.

US Rep Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA) presents his bill to reduce the interest rates on student loans by allowing borrowers to refinance at the lower rates offered to banks by the Federal Reserve. He says that the costs will be offset by increasing corporate tax rates on companies that pay their CEO more than 100 times the median compensation of all its employees. How will this work? DeSaulnier explains the details of his plan to a group gathered at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. When California's redevelopment agencies were eliminated, affordable housing took a crushing blow. Advocates throughout the State are mobilizing to create a new dedicated funding source for affordable housing through the California Homes and Jobs Act. On this episode of the Affordable Housing podcast, brought to you by Eden Housing, host Joanne Greene speaks to our guest California Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Chairman of the Housing and Transportation Subcommittee and sponsor of SB 391, the California Homes and Jobs Act. SB 391 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on April 9, 2013. As chair of Transportation and Housing, Senator DeSaulnier has fought for greater accountability on the state's transportation infrastructure projects. Through other committee assignments Senator DeSaulnier has been a strong advocate for California's more vulnerable populations, introducing legislation to support underserved, homeless and foster youth. In late 2011 - early 2012, the California Supreme Court rendered a set of decisions that resulted in the elimination of redevelopment agencies. That effectively eliminated a billion dollars a year that local governments were using to help create and preserve affordable housing. Senator DeSaulnier was a leader in efforts to save housing funding.
