“Humans play with social rules - that way we can test the boundaries without actually violating the rules”Robin Hanson is a pioneer in rigorous futurism, an Economics professor at George Mason University, a Future of Humanity Institute Research Associate, and the founder of OvercomingBias. In this podcast episode, Hanson discusses his book “The Elephant In The Brain”. Hanson argues that our brains are designed to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus we don't like to talk about how selfish we might really be. This is "the elephant in the brain." This week, we recount the tales of Pygmalion, and then, of Phaeton. These stories were initially told and propagated orally, with evidence of Minoan and Mycenean bards singing songs of Gods and heroes way back in the 18th century BC. Pictorial depictions of these tales were popular too, featuring prominently in vase paintings and decorations. The first story we recount today is that of Pygmalion, which is a tale of a prominent King and sculptor of Cyprus. It is recorded in book 10 of Ovid's Metamorphoses – and the story you're about to hear now has been taken from the book titled “A Book of Myths”, authored by Jean Lang. Welcome to a brand new episode of Stories That Made Us! This week we conclude the wonderful tale of the great Algonquian hero – Nanabozho, which we began in the previous episode. Keen listeners and old followers of the podcast would remember Nanabozho – for he played a grand role in the creation of the Anishinaabe world – helping the great spirit – the Kitchi Manitou to build our world and populate it with all beings – making everything the way we see it today. Check out episode 6 of the first series for that awesome tale. This story is one of his many tales and has been taken from the book titled, “The Indian Fairy Book – From the Original Legends” by Henry Schoolcraft.Reference:Title: The Indian Fairy Book From the Original LegendsAuthor: Henry R. On May 16th, 1937, at around 6pm, a woman in her late 20s left a dance hall in Paris and walked quickly toward a bus stop. About 25 minutes later, she entered the metro station and took a seat in an empty first class car while the other passengers crammed into the second-class cars. When the car arrived at the next station forty-five seconds later, the doors opened on a crime scene: the woman, Laetitia Toureaux, sat slouched in her seat, bleeding heavily with a nine-inch dagger buried to its hilt in her neck. The woman died before reaching the hospital and wasn’t able to name her attacker, leaving the Parisian police with a perplexing locked room mystery on their hands. Why was Laetitia killed? Was her murder an assassination? Was she a spy for the Italian government? Listen to join the discussion! This, of course, is a continuation of our tales from Africa. Other tribes are represented in episodes 16, 11, 7, and 3. There's also the ancient Egyptian creation myth that we covered in the 17th episode. Hi there and welcome to Stories That Made Us. This week, we tell tales of the Ekoi, Fan, Fon, Fulani, Bakuba, and Basonge. The stories have been inspired by David A Leeming's amazing book, "Creation Myths of the World: An Encyclopedia." We begin with the origin story of the Ekoi. The Ekoi is a common name that is given to a combination of southeastern Nigerian tribes. They live near the Efik people, whose tale of origin we covered in the 16th episode! Under the religious leadership of high priests called Ntoons, the Ekoi are best known for their ritualistic many-faced skin-covered masks. The Ekoi story contains a two creator motif that is perhaps expressed in the multi-faced masks for which the tribe is famous. Keen listeners may also find the closeness in names between the Ekoi and Efik creators. The next story is of the Fan. The Bantu-speaking Fan inhabit parts of what are now Gabon, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea. Their creation myth is a story of human origin. There's a sense of an element of evil inherent in the world. The Fang creation myth emphasizes the fall of Fam, a creature that represents original mankind. The evil was so incorrigible in him that the deities had to create a new Fam who became the ancestor of the present humans. Their story possesses an element of the flood myths where the god destroys the old creation with thunder and lightning. Interestingly, the myth purports the idea that the world has inherent evil that is in the buried old and original Fam. It also speaks about the potential spiritual power in the existence of the Soul. We now move on to the Fon. The Fon is a large West African group of peoples living in Benin, southwest Nigeria, and Togo. Their short creation myth, which exists in various forms, features a moon goddess. The Fon is a patrilineal people whose creation myth is dominated by apparently female forces. In all likelihood, this arises from the obvious creative power of women as birth-givers. Of interest, too, is the presence of a positive force in the body of a serpent. The final story is of the Basonge. A Bantu tribe of the southeast Congo region, the Basonge, tell creation myths that feature, like so many other myths of Africa, the theme of enmity between two creators. I hope you enjoy the story. Hello, my friends! Happy Holidays! I hope you got what you wanted for Christmas and Hanukkah! And...here's one last present that I was hiding behind the sofa! Last year I did a traditional Christmas ghost story reading. This is a tradition that harkens back to Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and has been kept alive by the BBC throughout the decades. I’ve decided I want to make this an annual event. So, what I want to do this Christmas season is to tell a few short tales to chill you while you sit with just one flickering candle and a hot toddy or hot chocolate or a sugar-free energy drink. Whatever your poison, I hope these stories please you enough that maybe you can keep the tradition of the Christmas ghost story going with your own family. This year I'll be telling THREE GHOST STORIES! William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe (1839) The Outsider by H.P. Lovecraft (1926) The Pale Man by Julius Long (1934) I hope you enjoy the show, and I look forward to having more conversations in 2020! In the summer of 1974, in the dunes of Provincetown, a coastal resort community on Cape Cod, a teenage girl walking her dog discovered the badly decomposed corpse of a young woman. The woman, eventually named the "Lady of the Dunes," was found lying face down on a beach towel, nude, with a bandanna and a pair of jeans folded beneath her head. Several theories have been made over the years in an attempt to identify the Lady of the Dunes. In 2015, writer Joe Hill, son of horror novelist Stephen King, proposed one of the most popular after watching Steven Spielberg's classic film Jaws. Who was the Lady of the Dunes? What happened to her, and why? Was she really an extra in the movie Jaws, and, could the connection lead officials to her murderer? Listen to find out! The horror genre of fiction is extremely popular in today's world. Some of the horror stories that are being pushed in library reading programs today are many times gory or outright satanic. Question: is there a place for scary works of literature in a Catholic's library? Well many ghost stories are probably already there, like a Christmas Carol. In Charles Dickens' time, every big fictional author had to write at least one ghost story in order to be popular. Grimms Fairy tales are full of terrifying stories. Every time people get around a campfire, they talk about creepy things that may or may not have happened to them. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with a grizzly story, so long as the moral of it is clear, it uplifts you and doesn't bring to mind devilish things or despair. Again the story has to be uplifting and ideally adventurous. This is how you can captivate a young reader's imagination, especially young boy readers, who are totally misunderstood by modern people. Particularly liberal modern people. I'm going to read a story for you today that I think is a fantastic addition to any young Gentleman's library, written by the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: the perfect author replacement for Stephen King. This tale is more grounded in reality and when you finish it, you'll feel like it was time well spent. “Charity is no substitute for justice withheld.” - Quote from Saint Augustine I would categorize today's tale as “stories that every young man should know about history. To skip to the first battle, just go to minute 20:35, it's all action from there. I found a version of the story of Beowulf by Stafford Riggs that is super easy to understand as opposed to other tongue twister translations. This story shows many aspects of bravery and chivalry which would've been lost had they not been preserved through the ages by the medieval monks. By the time you finish hearing this dragon slaying story, you'll be inclined to agree that it was well worth saving. We visit Toronto, the largest city in Canada. We crash a butter tart bakeoff at a fancy hotel, watch senior citizens play lawn bowling, and listen to blues on the sidewalk. We also hear from an immigrant, a city councilor, and pastry chefs. This is a special episode in an occasional series about towns and cities. Different people answer the same two questions: what is the best thing about this place? And what is the worst thing about this place?
