It seems like definitions of child abuse are really just in the eye of the beholder, or, in the eye of government-funded NGOs. In today's episode, we look at the abomination that is the illegal practice of breast ironing and ask how it is any different from the government-funded, trans-promoted practice of breast binding that is being pushed in our schools. Then, we discuss how the New York Times decided to yet again, terrify the public with a totally non-sensical story involving fracking. This article is everything that's wrong with the New York Times and the research world as well. We also take a look into the complex life and legacy of deceased California Senator, Diane Feinstein, who is otherwise known as the “last moderate Democrat.” The shocking story of her upbringing proves, you never truly know what's going on in someone's life. Lastly, are joined by children's rights activist and author, Katy Faust, to discuss her new book: “Raising Conservative Kids in a Woke City.” She gives us her insight on tackling this real conundrum of the violation of children's rights and how to teach historical, economic, and biological truth in a world full of lies. Laphonza Butler is well known in Democratic circles. Her resume includes roles as a regent on the board of the University of California, president of the California SEIU, and most recently the third president of EMILY's List. But with her appointment to the late Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat this afternoon, her profile is about to get far more public. It also means she has mere weeks to decide if she will run to be elected to the seat she is assuming. California Bureau Chief Christopher Cadelago tells Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels that it's a decision that could throw an already complicated race into a tailspin. Sen. Diane Feinstein (CA) has died at 90. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, she became the longest-serving female Senator, even amid health issues in later years. President Biden lauded his Democrat colleague's legacy after hearing the news. The Sekulow team discusses the California Senator's public service and the process of replacing Sen. Feinstein's seat in the Senate. Other topics on today's show include the pending government shutdown and how it could impact the country, Elon Musk's visit yesterday to the southern border, and how voters view the Left's attempt to disqualify Trump via the 14th Amendment.
Senator Dianne Feinstein died Thursday night. Her death was confirmed by family members Friday morning. The Senate's oldest serving member, and California's first female senator, Feinstein had announced that she would retire at the end of her term. Her long and storied political career began in San Francisco. She came to national prominence in the midst of tragedy: as the president of the Board of Supervisors, it was Feinstein who announced to the world that Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk had been assassinated. Feinstein served as mayor of San Francisco for 9 years. Feinstein was elected to the Senate in 1992. During her tenure she championed the 1994 assault weapons ban and in 2014, as chairperson of the Senate Intelligence Committee, issued a damning report on the use of torture by the CIA post 9/11. We'll talk about Feinstein and her legacy. Guests: Jim Lazarus, longtime aide to Senator Feinstein Jackie Speier, former Democratic Congresswoman who represented California's 14th Congressional District (parts of San Francisco and most of San Mateo County) and served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Armed Services Committee, and the House Oversight committee Jerry Roberts, author of "Dianne Feinstein: Never Let Them See You Cry" and former managing editor of the San Francisco Chronicle Barbara Boxer, former Democratic Congresswoman who represented California's 6th Congressional District and also served as California Senator Willie Brown, former San Francisco Mayor Scott Shafer, senior editor, KQED's California Politics and Government desk and co-host of Political Breakdown Marisa Lagos, politics correspondent, KQED and co-host of KQED's Political Breakdown show

We have lots of San Diego topics on the table including a federal fraud case in Poway, winners and losers in CA budget, the future of Coronado mayor Richard Bailey, Jim Desmond and Congestion Pricing on Freeways, and much more. It's Wednesday June 28, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway Social Security Fraud A Poway man defrauded the Social Security system and the VA system of over $830,000 over 3 decades as he schemed to collect using his dead mother's name. WTF? Crazy story. Social Security will not be solvent starting in 2034. Poway seems to be in the news for all of the wrong reasons. Gavin Newsom's CA Budget – Winners & Losers (housing, climate, auto dealers, education) California had to spend less than they wanted due to the pending deficit. The CA budget is loaded with examples of winners and losers. Isn't that what government policies always do? Some win at the expense of others. Some lose, so others can win. What ever happened to free trade and win-win outcomes? Tragic Teen e-Bike Death in Encinitas Collision While we mourn the loss of a young man in an e-bike accident, we look more broadly at the innovation in the e-bike market. Could this be a solution to help cities transition from suburban to urban? Do we have enough bike lanes? Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey is Running for County Board of Supervisors Maybe you have seen Richard Bailey's social media and direct mail messages. He has a lot to say about “The San Diego Comeback”. Why is a mayor of little ol' Coronado commenting about issues beyond his city? Because he is running for office! Plus we discuss some proposed tax increases under consideration. Jim Desmond and SANDAG Congestion Freeway Tax They are already planning to charge a per-mile tax for road usage. It's not a bad idea, but it will be difficult to implement fairly. Now San Diego is considering a Congestion Tax for freeway usage to subsidize mass transit. What's going on here? This is a tax on the many to benefit the few. Mass transit ridership is in decline, so why are we subsidizing it? Paloma Aguirre, Imperial Beach, and the Problem of Tijuana Sewage Seems this sewage problem in the South Bay has going on for decades, yet they still can't fix it. Now the County Board of Supervisors has declared a state of emergency. San Diego congressional delegates are pushing President Biden to solve the problem. Meanwhile some beaches in Imperial Beach have been closed for a year and a half. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria: Corporate Welfare vs Road Repair Todd Gloria flip flopped. City officials and business leaders lobbied for San Diego to host a design event. Todd Gloria vowed to ensure it was privately funded. Now he is singing a different tune. He wants to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize corporations in town in order to generate more tax revenue. Should the city be run as a business? Should those resources instead be used to repair roads? In this episode, I chat with my dear friend Zohra Fahim on her efforts to change policy, making our world safer for animals! In her work as a tireless advocate for animals, Zohra Fahim persuaded Palomar Medical Center to participate in Meatless Mondays. This effort added more vegan options to patient menus which later inspired the food servicing teams to transition their menus towards 60 percent plant-based. She also passed a Statewide Meatless Monday Resolution garnering the support of several Assemblymembers, and a California Senator, and passed several Meatless Monday Proclamations in her local community.Since 2014, she has lobbied for animal laws at the state, local, and federal levels. She is now the President and Founder of the Los Angeles Alliance for Animals where she leads a campaign to eliminate pony rides and petting zoos in Los Angeles. She has gained attention from multiple large media outlets in Los Angeles (and internationally) on the plight of the animals at Griffith Park and Pony Rides and Petting Zoo. During our conversation, she will share her best practices on how you can push for meaningful change at any level within an organization. To find more about Zohra's work, send her a connection request on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/zohra-fahim-69bb439b/Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com

Hometown Radio 03/17/21 6p: Jeff Bliss looks at California senator Dianne Feinstein. Should she resign?
Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Joe Biden speaks directly to the press on one of the first occasions of his presidency, and drops a couple big lines, including support for quote “reforming” the filibuster and an admission that Andrew Cuomo could be on the way out. Meanwhile, other Democrats continue to embarrass themselves, as new reports allege that Dianne Feinstein’s husband is trying to nepotism his way into an ambassadorship under Biden, though the 87-year-old California Senator insists she’ll keep her seat either way. And lastly, the GOP continues its assault on voting rights around the country, leaning heavily on bogus allegations of voter fraud, despite widespread evidence that it just doesn’t happen. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Joe Biden sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopolous on Tuesday night for one of the first major interviews of his presidency, and delivered a couple key quotes that could have big ramifications for his party’s future. First, Biden indicated that he supports changing the Senate filibuster rule, a big hangup that has plagued the Democratic party’s ability to enact his agenda. Still, Biden, a long time Senator, did not say he wants to completely abolish the filibuster, instead saying that the Senate should go back to the talking filibuster, where a Senator who wanted to delay a vote had to stand and speak for as long as possible. Even this change has Mitch McConnell scared, as he vowed to take a quote “scorched earth” endquote strategy if Democrats touch the filibuster. That wasn’t all from Biden on Tuesday night though. He also weighed in on the allegations against New York Governor and Democratic rising star Andrew Cuomo, saying that the governor should resign if the investigation into his conduct finds that the multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him are true. Biden added quote “I think he'll probably end up being prosecuted, too." endquote. Doesn’t look good for old Andy’s long-term prospects as a Democratic leader there! Biden plans to follow this one-on-one with a full news conference on Thursday. Dems Hope Nepotism Can Solve Feinstein Problem Meanwhile, 87-year-old senator Dianne Feinstein still has no plans to retire, even as her husband tries to glad-hand his way into an overseas posting as one of Joe Biden’s ambassadors. Pressure has mounted for Feinstein to retire for years in the hope that a younger and ideally more progressive Senator could take one of California’s two safely-blue seats. The reason is pretty simple: Feinstein is clearly not as sharp as she once was, which the party has pretty openly hinted at. She was asked to step down from her ranking position on the Judiciary committee after putting on an insipid, pandering performance during the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation hearings. The party is also eager to replace Feinstein with a black woman, as the Senate has precisely zero members who fit that demographic now that Kamala Harris is sitting in the VP’s office. The New York Times reports that the Democrats are hoping Biden will solve that problem for them by handing Feinstein’s husband Richard Blum, a wealthy investor and long time friend of the president. The hope is that if Blum takes an overseas vanity post, he’ll take Feinstein with him and away from the Senate. But in comments to reporters this week, Feinstein insisted she would serve out the rest of her term, which lasts until 2025. But hey, maybe in this case a little nepotism will go a long way. GOP Leans Into Voter Fraud The GOP is once again putting out an absolute onslaught of bills aimed at stripping the right to vote from millions of Americans. Their reasoning is very simple: when more people vote, the Republicans lose. To stop that happening, they’re trying to weaponize any skewed advantage they can get in the courts and legislatures to make sure that fewer people exercise their right. In Texas alone, NBC News reports that there are more than two dozen restrictive voting bills currently going through the GOP-controlled legislature. Many of them take aim at the spooky specter of so-called voter fraud, which is a scare tactic designed to make people think the Democrats steal elections. In reality, the Houston Chronical reports that Texas’s Attorney General’s office spent a combined 22,000 hours looking for voter fraud in the 2020 election and found just 16 cases of a false address being registered. There are 17 million voters in Texas. Some of the more insidious bills specifically target voters Republicans know they can’t win over. One strategy they’re using is to try to limit the hours polling places can be open for early voting or standardize the hours across the state, which data shows would help turnout in smaller, rural communities and hurt it in the busy urban areas. That’s a pretty obvious one right there. It’s worth noting that this is going on all over the country. Republicans have tried ploys like this in Georgia, Florida, and all over the South -- wherever they’ve got control of a state, voting rights are going to suffer. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: A new U.S. intelligence report finds that, surprise! Both Russia and Iran tried to influence the 2020 election, but China, remarkably, did not. We’ll see how various interests in D.C.’s foreign policy blob try to weaponize this information. Moderna announced that it will begin testing its vaccine on children under the age of 12, enlisting over 6,000 volunteers in the U.S. and Canada, which could give crucially missing data on how effective and safe the vaccine is in young children. In Texas, Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation made a crucial judgement to pause one of the state’s most notoriously racist highway expansion projects, which would have displaced over 1,000 predominantly minority households and subjected thousands of others to increased pollution and potential flooding. The Washington Post reports that House Democrats are expected to re-introduce a Medicare For All bill into the House today, renewing their push despite the ambivalence of the Biden administration. More than 100 representatives are expected to put their names on the Bill. Davis, also a leader in the SDS, and considered by many to be the greatest organizer of his generation, was a prominent figure in the antiwar movement. Sadly, Davis passed away earlier this year. Weiner, a community activist who served as a marshal with the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (Hayden and Davis were also co-directors of MOBE alongside David Dellinger), published his political memoir “Conspiracy to Riot” last year. Each of these individuals shared their feelings about the film, their reflections on the time, and what life looked like following the trial.
OPEN: Kind of a hodgepodge for you today, including the etymology of the word hodgepodge which is "a kind of stew, especially "one made with goose, herbs, spices, wine, and other ingredients." Earlier it was an Anglo-French legal term meaning "collection of property in a common 'pot' before dividing it equally" (late 13c.). Immediately that doesn’t make sense to me. So… first it was a legal term meaning a collection of property and then it became goose stew? See how I can take a throw-away thing like a definition and turn it into a rabbit hole? Among other nonsense the Senator and I discuss briefly are: White Privilege should not include males under 5’8” who are bald The Kansas City Chiefs name is racist and needs to be changed A Buccaneer is a racist term Rape is okay if it’s in the name of freedom Paul Revere was gay Superbowl Advertising Costs this year SKD Knickerbocker is not a brand of pants at the GAP, it’s a political consulting firm We start of with the Senator playing “Alone Again, Naturally” by Gilbert O’sullivan as if this is a great idea…. After that we mainly try to stay away from politics and talk about the Superbowl, which is obviously over now, but we keep going back to politics like a couple of moronic moths drawn to a flame. No offense to any moths who may be listening. About thirty minutes in the Senator goes off on a jag about Alex Padilla. Alex Padilla is California’s former Secretary of State- now Senator in Washington DC taking Kamala Harris’ place. Here is our Senator’s beef with the newly appointed Senator Alex Padilla: During Padilla’s time in office as S.O.S. he awarded a contract for $35 million dollars to an organization called SKD Knickerbocker which is a public affairs and political consulting firm that specializes in working for Democratic Party politicians. SKD Knickerbocker created a voter outreach campaign called Vote Safe California. At least some of the funds to pay them came from the CARES Act which is the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Did the campaign cost $35M? I don’t know. But guess who is VERY closely tied to President-slash-Grandpa Joe? SKD Knickerbocker. In fact, Anita Dunn, who is one of the firm’s partners and founding members was part of the Biden campaign and per the New York Times, was "elevated" during 2020 to essentially having "effective control of the campaign." So, the Senator is going to tell you later that California Secretary of State Alex Padilla paid SKD Knickerbocker $35M from their invoices by using local funds, which included federal money allocated through the Coronavirus CARES Act. So one might make the claim that Coronavirus relief funds went indirectly to the Biden campaign. I wouldn’t make that claim, but there are a number of republicans in Washington (surprise!) who are asking about it and are not getting answers. So that is what you will hear our senator get tee’d off about. Here’s what tee’s me off about this story: when I went to research this… and we’re talking moron research not journalism, I searched and searched and the only recognizable news source I could find was Fox News. Of course Fox News is going to run a slanderous story on a democrat, and I’m not interested in that. So I kept searching Alex Padilla plus… 35 MILLION DOLLARS, the Help America Vote Act, and finally… when I combined Alex with the CARES Act, I found a news story from Newsweek Magazine. Hell, I even wrote to the journalist who wrote the goddamn article because, not surprisingly, both the offices of Mr. Padilla and Mr. Newsome did not have a response at the time of publication. Will I hear back from the journalist? I don’t know… have you left this stupid podcast a good rating or made a comment? There’s your answer. What pisses me off about this story is that the always accused liberal media… and most news sources are left leaning… it’ a goddamn fact… they don’t choose to cover a story when it’s about a democrat. And if you tack on that the democrat is a Latino who is the first Latino to represent California in the Senate. Mmmm… might not be worth the blowback. So here for you is The Modern Moron’s clunky episode with lots of Valentine’s Love sent straight to you with a kiss… thank you for listening. CLOSE: Politics… is obviously about money and power. And I do believe there are people who get into politics with the absolute best of intentions. But it becomes obvious very quickly that you can do more good with more money. And if you just cut a corner here or look the other way there, you can get some more money to do more good. But things get cloudy and murky and the corner you cut to help your good cause might be damaging someone else’s cause. Gross… I don’t see how they keep the energy to exist in that toxic environment. I wonder what the egos are like in the Senate? We know the Lindsay Grams and the Nancy Pelosi’s and the Ted Cruz’s have an elevated sense of themselves, they couch it in their religion or some other pretentious bullshit but the ego is there puffing up every day… how their message is more righteous and the other party’s message is so damaging to the country. What a happy note to end on… How about congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and let’s not pay attention to the impeachment trial going on in DC with one side trying to keep a sociopath from holding public office ever again and the other side upholding the freedom of speech for a violence inciting sociopath who says in his speech to walk to the capital peacefully, that he’s responsible for the violence. Don't’ get me wrong, I can’t stand Trump as a president but how do you convict a guy for inciting violence when he literally says go peacefully. He is so toxic to this country, but don’t hate HIM because, once again, he covered his bases enough to elude conviction. They don’t call him The Teflon Don for nothing. And with a rimshot… and a silly sound effect… we can all end with a chuckle… Thank you for listening to the Modern Moron and have a great week America. A number of local members of Congress celebrated the historic swearing in of Vice President Kamala Harris Wednesday on Twitter. Harris, a former California Senator, is the first woman and the first person of both South Asian and Jamaican decent to hold this national office. Senator Alex Padilla, who was appointed to take over Vice President Harris’ vacated Senate seat, declared in a tweet that Harris, a daughter of Oakland, has inspired women and girls around the world. Riverside’s Mark Takano tweeted his congratulations and called it a new day in America while Pomona Representative Norma Torres shared that we can all take pride in Harris shattering one of the highest glass ceilings. Big Bear’s Jay Obernolte posted that he was honored to witness the inauguration, and he is confident he can find common ground with the Biden-Harris administration. Obernolte was one of the 121 House Republicans who objected to accepting the 2020 election results two weeks ago.

This week, we revisit one of Kevin's pet peeves: the fact that sitting Senators don't have term limits. We discuss this in the wake of a "New Yorker" report that brings into doubt the mental fortitude of California Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein. Also this week: former Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes joins us to discuss his latest collaboration with Eaze, which aims to improve equity in the legal cannabis industry. Finally, we thank the health care workers of the world — who have a long four or more months ahead of them until a COVID-19 vaccine can be widely distributed. Join us!
Our guest today is California Senator, Maria Elena Durazo. Maria Elena was born the 7th of 11 children to migrant workers. It was at a young age that Maria Elena first experienced the exploitative conditions and challenges migrant laborers face. In spite of the obstacles of being born into a migrant working family, Maria Elena went on to earn her college degree from St. Mary’s College, which is where she became involved with the Chicano movement. Following her studies, she entered the labor movement as an organizer with what would later become UNITE-HERE. While working she also received her degree from the People College of Law. In 2004 Maria Elena became the Executive Vice-President of UNITE-HERE International and In 2008 she served as the vice-chair to the DNC and National Co-Chair of the Obama Presidential Campaign. What I know her best for is between 2006-2014 she was the first woman to lead the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor as Secretary-Treasurer. In 2018 Maria Elena was elected to serve public office as Senator of the 24th district of California.

The pandemic has seen health officers being attacked online, threatened at their private homes, fired or forced into resigning. But although the hyper-polarization of COVID-19 has further contributed to an erosion of trust in institutions, these tactics aren’t new. California Senator Dr. Richard Pan talks with Dr. Josh Sharfstein about a small but vocal group that opposes public health measures like vaccines and the bullying and intimidation tactics they’ve used against health officials in recent years. Pan also talks about how social media has given them a platform for bad behavior and the real life consequences of online harassment.

At approximately 4:15 pm ET on Tuesday, Biden named Harris as his running mate. Once she formally accepts the nomination, Harris will become the first Black and South Asian-American woman to run on a major US political party's presidential ticket. What does this selection tell us about the direction of the Biden 2020 campaign? "The Supreme Court on Tuesday once again put on hold a judge's order that relaxed election procedures because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the result will keep a referendum on partisan gerrymandering off the November ballot in Oregon," the Washington Post reported Tuesday. Here we are in August, and the court says it's too close to the election to make a change that will allow people to vote with a greater sense of security for their health during a pandemic? "Parties across Bolivia's political spectrum are racing to defuse massive street blockades that have paralyzed the nation, as some protesters threaten to march on La Paz and demand the resignation of interim President Jeanine Áñez," the Washington Post reported Wednesday. What's going on in Bolivia? "The Trump Administration has offered a substantially revised draft on a call for the UN to extend the Iran arms embargo," Antiwar.com reported Tuesday. "The new draft is substantially different from the June version, which was 35 paragraphs, and is now down to four. The goal seems to be to limit debate and avoid vetoes from Russia and China by removing as much as possible. A veto is still a foregone conclusion." These actions, along with US State Department Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams being injected into the issue, now raise the question: could the US covert war with Iran be out in the open by Election Day on November 3?"Fueled by small donations, grassroots progressive enthusiasm, and an expanding base of support, Rep. Ilhan Omar on Tuesday handily defeated a dark money-backed challenger Anton Melton-Meaux in the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 5th congressional district — a win the progressive incumbent characterized as further evidence that 'organized people will always beat organized money,'" Common Dreams reported Wednesday. Is she correct? Is a US “black hand” behind the protests in Hong Kong, as Chinese media outlets recently alleged? How do you get protesters in Hong Kong waving American flags during a recent demonstration?A great article ran in CounterPunch on Wednesday entitled "The Likud Conspiracy: Israel in the Throes of a Major Political Crisis," by Ramzy Baroud, wherein he writes, "Protests against Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, have raged on for weeks, turning violent sometimes. Israelis are furious at their government's mediocre response to the coronavirus pandemic, especially as COVID-19 disease is experiencing a massive surge throughout the country.""After years of challenging the actions and authority of the US Department of Homeland Security, the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union] Monday called for Congress to dismantle the agency and break it into smaller parts," Common Dreams reported Monday. “'Its dysfunction is one of the Beltway's worst kept secrets,' Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, wrote in an op-ed. 'DHS' overbroad mandate and unchecked powers have turned it into a tinderbox, now ignited by a president willing to trample on the constitutional limits of presidential powers.” Is it time for this failed entity to go? So much of what goes on in our culture is influenced by ideas, by the ideas that you have about those things, about the words that are used to express the idea and sometimes those words are intentionally misleading. They're meant to mislead you and to mislead your loved ones. In this episode of Life Matters we're going to talk about the legislature and the fact that laws are made by people that you elect every two years. That's when you get a chance to hire someone to make laws for you. If you don't pay attention to the work they're doing for you, to the laws that they're proposing, well, that's your responsibility to get rid of someone when they consistently make bad laws. It's a great gift that we live in one of the greatest nations on earth because you have the ability to influence your own laws and you'll be held responsible for that. You can't point your fingers at others. You're going to have to take up that burden and pay attention to the ideas and the battle of ideas in which were in. We're going to join Senator Mike Morrell an old friend of the pro-life movement and we'll talk about some of the things that you can do. One of the things that Senator Morrell brings up is the issue of government finance of the abortion industry. There are many pro-lifers that don't understand that the abortion movement is actually government-financed. While pro-abortion and pro-choice advocates will use language like “hands off my body,” or “Get the government out of abortion.” In reality, it is the government that's promoting abortion, promoting the idea that abortion is a good thing. Planned Parenthood gets millions of dollars to promote these ideas but also to perform the abortion and to advertise to young, pregnant women. That's government money, that's your money being used. If the government were to pull out of the abortion industry in many ways it would wither on the vine. It would dry up. That's your tax money. You’ve got to know about that and you’ve got to demand from your legislators that your money not go into this industry. Go to CaliforniaProLife.org and find out more about getting the government out of the abortion industry. We also want to give you a heads up: this being an election year, this is a year you can do something about this but you need to plan now to make sure that you find out the resources you can use in your community to get involved. School board races are very important. It's the school boards that can release kids secretly for abortions. You need to elect school board members who are going to say, “No. We're not going to release these children without parental consent to Planned Parenthood.” The only way to do that is to elect good pro-life school board members. Do that this year. Get involved. We’ll give you the tools. Go to CaliforniaProLife.org and find out how you can change your community.

When California's redevelopment agencies were eliminated, affordable housing took a crushing blow. Advocates throughout the State are mobilizing to create a new dedicated funding source for affordable housing through the California Homes and Jobs Act. On this episode of the Affordable Housing podcast, brought to you by Eden Housing, host Joanne Greene speaks to our guest California Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Chairman of the Housing and Transportation Subcommittee and sponsor of SB 391, the California Homes and Jobs Act. SB 391 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on April 9, 2013. As chair of Transportation and Housing, Senator DeSaulnier has fought for greater accountability on the state's transportation infrastructure projects. Through other committee assignments Senator DeSaulnier has been a strong advocate for California's more vulnerable populations, introducing legislation to support underserved, homeless and foster youth. In late 2011 - early 2012, the California Supreme Court rendered a set of decisions that resulted in the elimination of redevelopment agencies. That effectively eliminated a billion dollars a year that local governments were using to help create and preserve affordable housing. Senator DeSaulnier was a leader in efforts to save housing funding.
