That opportunity led him to work with one of the most beloved children's entertainment groups of all time—The Wiggles, from 2001 to 2007, where he performed on-screen and on-stage as a Wiggly Dancer, provided backing vocals for several albums and portrayed the role of Gallant George in The Wiggles' fifth television series! He was also an occasional understudy for several members of the group. After his time with The Wiggles, Ryan continued collaborating with John Field on various musical projects, started the rock band The Vinyl Edge, and remains active in the entertainment industry today. Now back in Canada, he's still pursuing his passion for performance.

Practicing Harp Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2024 31:51

There are three ways we learn how to play the harp. The first and most obvious one is by doing.  Playing and practicing is our “go to” method for learning. You can't actually learn to play the harp without playing it.  When my son was about 12 or 13, he fell madly in love with football. There weren't any teams he could play on at his school or in our community, so he had to be content with playing football video games. Not the same thing, of course. Even so, when he got to high school and finally had the opportunity to play on a real team, he was actually surprised to find out how different the game was when he was on a real field instead of a virtual one. The second way we learn is by instruction, by having someone show us how to advance our skills or teach us new ones. In today's world there are countless ways to get instruction: lessons, coachings, videos, online courses. But instruction can teach us more than how to get our fingers to obey our commands. For example, a music theory class can help us learn the elements of music like keys, harmony, melody, structure and form. That's an important part of our harp playing too. Today, though, we're going to talk about the third way to learn to play the harp, and that's through music itself. This is the part of learning that goes beyond the doing, beyond the fingers, notes and rhythm, to discovering how music communicates and learning how we can communicate it through our harp playing. This may be an advanced concept, but the methods we are learning today (going back to learning method two, instruction) are ones every harpist at every skill level can and should use. We are going to talk about how music can show you how to be more musical. If that sounds a little circular, don't worry. I'll sort it all out for you.  Our particular focus areas today will be two techniques that are extra challenging for harpists, more so than for other instrumentalists. We're talking about legato and rubato, and we are going to be looking at them through the music of two pianist/composers, John Field and Frederic Chopin. Whether you've played their music or not, there is a lot for us all to learn from them, so get ready for some beautiful music and some ideas you can use to make your own playing more expressive and beautiful. This Day in Legal History: Pennsylvania First Movie Censorship LawsOn July 19, 1911, Pennsylvania enacted the first movie censorship laws in the United States, marking a significant moment in legal and cultural history. These laws empowered a state board to review and censor films, aiming to protect the public from what were considered immoral or indecent content. This move sparked a wave of similar legislation across the country, as other states quickly followed Pennsylvania's lead. The push for film censorship reflected broader societal concerns about the influence of motion pictures on public morals, especially on the youth. The legal landscape for film censorship was further solidified in 1915 when the US Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of these laws in the case of Mutual Film Corporation v. Industrial Commission of Ohio. The Court ruled that movies were a form of business, not art, and therefore not entitled to First Amendment protections. This decision effectively endorsed the states' rights to regulate the burgeoning film industry, leading to widespread and varied censorship practices. It wasn't until 1952, with the case of Joseph Burstyn, Inc. v. Wilson, that the Supreme Court reversed this stance, recognizing films as a form of expression protected under the First Amendment. This pivotal shift underscored the evolving understanding of free speech and the role of movies in American culture. Pennsylvania's early censorship laws thus set the stage for a decades-long debate over the balance between regulation and freedom of expression in the arts.Over the past two terms, the U.S. Supreme Court has dismissed five significant cases from the conservative-leaning 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on the grounds of lacking legal standing. These cases involved controversial issues like abortion rights, online free speech, federal student loans, immigration, and Native American child welfare. By overturning these rulings, the Supreme Court emphasized the necessity for plaintiffs to demonstrate concrete and non-speculative injury to sustain their cases. This approach aims to reduce the number of politically charged lawsuits, often filed in states within the 5th Circuit due to its conservative reputation.Legal experts note that this trend marks a push for stricter judicial gatekeeping. The Supreme Court's 6-3 conservative majority has reinforced limits on standing, even affecting conservative plaintiffs and Republican-led states. This shift has been evident in cases such as Texas and Louisiana's challenges to Biden's immigration policies, and anti-abortion groups' attempts to restrict access to mifepristone. Notably, some decisions were unanimous, while others saw sharp divisions among the justices. The doctrine of legal standing prevents courts from resolving policy disputes better suited for legislative arenas. Historically, liberals tested the boundaries on standing, but recent rulings show a change in this dynamic. The Supreme Court's actions could limit state attorneys general from frequently suing over opposing presidential policies, altering the landscape of American judicial proceedings. US Supreme Court is making it harder to sue - even for conservatives | ReutersOn July 19, 2024, a Russian court sentenced U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in a maximum security penal colony on charges of espionage, a verdict his employer, the Wall Street Journal, condemned as a "disgraceful sham conviction." Gershkovich, 32, was accused of attempting to gather sensitive information about a tank factory in Yekaterinburg and became the first U.S. journalist charged with spying in Russia since the Cold War. His arrest in March 2023 prompted many Western journalists to leave Moscow. The court, citing state secrecy, held the trial behind closed doors, fueling speculation about a potential U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange.During the hearing, Gershkovich, who maintained his innocence, stood in a glass cage and listened to the judge's rapid verdict. The judge ruled that the 16 months Gershkovich had already spent in detention would count towards his sentence. The Wall Street Journal and Gershkovich's colleagues expressed outrage and pledged to continue efforts for his release, emphasizing that journalism is not a crime.Russian prosecutors alleged that Gershkovich was gathering secret information for the CIA about a company manufacturing tanks for Russia's war in Ukraine. The factory in question, Uralvagonzavod, has been sanctioned by the West. The rapid conclusion of the trial suggests a potential prisoner exchange could be on the horizon, though the Kremlin has not commented on this possibility.Gershkovich's case has drawn attention to the risks faced by journalists in Russia, with his sentencing seen as a warning to Western reporters. Despite his imprisonment, Gershkovich has remained resilient, engaging with friends through letters and reading Russian literature. This conviction highlights the ongoing tension between Russia and the West, and the precarious position of foreign journalists in Russia.Russian court jails US reporter Gershkovich for 16 years in spying case his employer calls a sham | ReutersOn July 18, 2024, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked President Joe Biden's new student debt relief plan, halting its implementation. This decision came after seven Republican-led states requested a hold on the U.S. Department of Education's Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, which aimed to reduce monthly payments for millions of borrowers. The ruling followed a previous decision by U.S. District Judge John Ross that partially blocked the plan by preventing further loan forgiveness.Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who led the effort against the SAVE Plan, praised the ruling as a victory for Americans who believe in self-reliance. He criticized the plan, arguing it would burden taxpayers with significant debt. An Education Department spokesperson indicated they were assessing the ruling and would communicate with affected borrowers while defending the plan. The SAVE Plan, announced by Biden in 2022, was part of a broader $430 billion initiative to cancel up to $20,000 in debt for eligible Americans, but this broader program was blocked by the Supreme Court in June 2023. The SAVE Plan, which partially took effect on July 1, promised more favorable repayment terms and aimed to benefit over 20 million borrowers, with 8 million already enrolled.Despite already granting $5.5 billion in relief to 414,000 borrowers, the plan's estimated cost of $156 billion over ten years is disputed by Republican state attorneys general, who argue the actual cost is closer to $475 billion. The legal battle over the SAVE Plan continues, with parts of it also being contested in other courts.US appeals court blocks all of Biden student debt relief plan | ReutersTwo former Tesla Inc. lawyers have recently secured prominent legal roles at new companies. David Misler, previously an associate general counsel at Tesla, has been appointed general counsel and corporate secretary for BusPatrol America LLC. Born in 1810 in Poland, Chopin is celebrated for his profound contributions to piano music, blending lyrical beauty with technical brilliance. His nocturnes, a series of short piano pieces, are among his most admired works, characterized by their expressive melodies and delicate phrasing."Nocturne No. 2" stands out for its serene and lyrical qualities, encapsulating the essence of Chopin's style. Written in 1830-1832, this piece demonstrates his ability to evoke deep emotion through subtle harmonic shifts and intricate ornamentation. The piece begins with a gentle, flowing melody that is gracefully embellished, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The central section introduces a more dramatic contrast, yet it returns to the initial theme, now even more richly adorned, before concluding with a tranquil coda.Chopin's nocturnes were heavily influenced by the works of Irish composer John Field, who pioneered the form. Synopsis On today's date in 1837, the Dublin-born pianist and composer John Field breathed his last in Moscow at the age of 54. Born in 1782 into musical family, Field soon moved to London to study with the Italian composer Muzio Clementi and became a sought-after concert artist at a very tender age. Haydn heard the 13-year perform in London and was impressed. At age 16, Field premiered his own first Piano Concerto. Over the course of his life, John Field would meet, play for, and perform with many other famous composers of his day, including Beethoven, Czerny, Hummel, Moscheles, and Mendelsohn. Field ended up in Saint Petersburg, where he published his own compositions and apparently lived rather extravagantly. It's said he was so well-off that he could afford to turn down a lucrative appointment to the Russian court. In Tolstoy's famous novel WAR AND PEACE, the Countess Rostova even asks a pianist to play her favorite Field nocturne. And it's quite likely that while in Russia, like most of the Russian nobility of the day, Field got by speaking French, not Russian. It's said that on his deathbed when asked what his religion was, Field replied with a French pun: "I am not a Calvinist, but a Claveciniste (French for a harpsichord player). Hij wordt ook wel de uitvinder van de nocturne genoemd. Field had een grote fascinatie voor de mysteries van de nacht. Franz Liszt, één van de bekendste romantische componisten uit Hongarije, zei ooit over Fields' nocturnes dat het 'halfwakende dromen' zijn en dat ze je laten meevoeren naar een sterverlichte hemel.

Synopsis An old music dictionary's definition of “nocturne” reads as follows: “A night piece, a musical composition that suggests a nocturnal atmosphere, for example Haydn's ‘Notturno' or Mozart's ‘Serenata Notturna,' but more specifically a short piece of romantic character. First to use this title for this genre was John Field, followed by Chopin.” Hundreds of composers since Field and Chopin have tried their hand at writing nocturnes. This particular one was written for flute and guitar by the Boston-based composer Daniel Pinkham, as part of a five-movement suite of Nocturnes, all premiered on today's date in 1993, at the First and Second Church in Boston. Now, as any insomniac will tell you, there are all sorts of night moods, and the descriptive titles of Pinkham's set of five “Nocturnes” ranges from the sprightly to the serene, with others entitled “brooding,” “sultry,” and “restless” tossed in for good measure. Daniel Pinkham was particularly fortunate in his teachers. Imagine studying composition with Aaron Copland, Walter Piston, and Samuel Barber, or harpsichord with Wanda Landowska and organ with E. Power Biggs. Pinkham did – and in turn became a successful teacher himself, with a long tenure at the New England Conservatory of Music. He served as music director of Boston's historic King's Chapel, and as a composer was particularly honored by his church musician colleagues for his many works for chorus and organ. Fresh off their successful appearance at Pensacon, the guys are back at it.  This week they return to the exciting world of Superman!  ALL the way back to the first commercial incarnation other than the comic pages.  Along the way we also feature the return of Mr. John Field.  John last joined us on our episode featuring George Reeves (TV's first Superman).  John also possesses extensive knowledge of "Bud" Collyer, and the early radio days of Superman! The Adventures of Superman is a long-running radio serial that originally aired from 1940 to 1951 featuring the DC Comics character Superman. The serial came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From February 7 to June 24, 1949, it ran as a thrice-weekly half-hour show. The series shifted to ABC Saturday evenings on October 29, 1949, and then returned to afternoons twice a week on June 5, 1950, continuing on ABC until March 1, 1951.  In all, 2,088 original episodes of The Adventures of Superman aired on American radio.  In the first few episodes, Superman's home planet of Krypton is located on the far side of the sun, as opposed to a distant star system as it is in most stories. During the journey to Earth, baby Kal-el grows into an adult and emerges fully grown from his ship after it lands on Earth. He is never adopted by the Kents but immediately begins his superhero career.  This was eventually retconned in later episodes to match the narrative of the comic books. This serial introduced the fictional mineral kryptonite, the radiation from which can weaken and even (in some continuities) kill Superman. Aside from giving Superman's foes a plausible way to fight him, it also allowed Superman's voice actor to take the occasional break: Superman would spend the next episode incapacitated, his groans voiced by a substitute actor, Just as Superman's true identity remained a secret, the identity of radio actor Clayton 'Bud' Collyer also remained a secret from 1940 until 1946, when the character of Superman was used in a promotional campaign for racial and religious tolerance and Collyer did a Time magazine interview about that campaign. Since there were no reruns at that time, the series often used plot devices and plot twists to allow Collyer to have vacation time. Kryptonite allowed Superman to be incapacitated and incoherent with pain while the secondary characters took the focus instead. At other times, Batman (Stacy Harris) and Robin (Ronald Liss) appeared on the program in Superman's absence. The scripts by B. P. Freeman and Jack Johnstone were directed by Robert and Jessica Maxwell, George Lowther, Allen Ducovny and Mitchell Grayson. Sound effects were created by Jack Keane, Al Binnie, Keene Crockett and John Glennon. Many aspects associated with Superman, such as kryptonite, originated on radio, as did certain characters, including Daily Planet editor Perry White, copy boy Jimmy Olsen and police inspector Bill Henderson.   On March 2, 1945, Superman met Batman and Robin for the first time. Paramount's animated Superman short films used voices by the radio actors, and Columbia's Superman movie serials (1948, 1950) were "adapted from the Superman radio program broadcast on the Mutual Network". --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-adventures-of/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-adventures-of/support

As part of the BBC Music Get Playing, supporting amateur music making around the UK, 5 leading writers and artists contribute an Essay in this series, in which they talk about their little-known passions for playing an instrument. In the first programme, the impressionist, actor and writer Alistair McGowan describes his attempts to relearn the piano. He started learning as a child but gave it up to play football instead. He tried it again in his 30s but stopped when his TV series "The Big Impression" took over. Then, later on, after a midnight piano lesson on a cruise ship, he began in earnest again and discovered a new world of music-making. Alistair is fascinated by short pieces in particular. His special favourites are the pieces he heard his mother play and also ones he has discovered on piano courses and through hearing them on the radio. A tiny nugget of Satie, Mompou or John Field carries for him all the weight of human experience and channels a musical history into one small but perfect form. more info visit bbc.co.uk/getplaying Producer: Emma Kingsley.
