Successfully sharing & acting on research findings depends on active partnerships with the implementers – patients, caregivers, & their clinician partners. Summary Claude AI consulted to create this summary The 2024 Academy Health Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) Science Conference revealed a significant gap between researchers and implementers (patients, caregivers, and their clinician partners). While D&I science studies how to share and apply research findings effectively, the conference highlighted that implementers—the very people meant to use these findings—were largely absent. Through interviews with attendees, key barriers emerged: high conference costs, lack of deliberate outreach, and content primarily designed for researchers. A compelling example from Ghana demonstrated successful implementation through radio drama and community health workers, suggesting that effective D&I requires meeting people where they are, both literally and figuratively. In this episode, we sit down with Lisa Stewart, a nurse practitioner with more than 25 years of transplant nursing experience, currently working at the post-transplant BMT clinic at the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center in Boston. Lisa provides invaluable insights into managing chronic and acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and shares her expertise, stories, and advice for patients and caregivers navigating post-transplant life.Lisa describes her role in outpatient care, where the majority of her work focuses on managing chronic GVHD, a condition that is both a sign of a functioning immune system and a complex challenge. While mild GVHD can indicate that the transplant is effectively fighting diseases like leukemia or lymphoma, severe cases can lead to complications involving multiple organs. Lisa outlines the two major categories of GVHD: steroid-reactive and steroid-refractory, with the latter being particularly difficult to treat. Acute GVHD typically occurs within the first 100 days post-transplant and often impacts the skin, liver, or gut, whereas chronic GVHD can develop months or years later and affect a broader range of organs, including the eyes, mouth, lungs, and reproductive systems.Clinical trials have led to significant advancements in treatment, including drugs like Ruxolitinib and Rezurock, offering hope to patients who fail first-line steroid therapy. Lisa also highlights Axatilimab, a newer medication discussed at the 2023 ASH meeting, although its availability remains limited due to manufacturing challenges. Despite these breakthroughs, steroids remain the frontline treatment, though they often cause challenging side effects like hyperglycemia, insomnia, and weight gain.Lisa also emphasizes the critical role caregivers play in a patient's recovery, managing complex medication regimens and providing vital emotional and physical support. She notes that without strong support at home, a transplant may not be feasible, particularly in the crucial first six months post-transplant.The episode also touches on common post-transplant issues like oral GVHD, fatigue, and the importance of staying active. Lisa shares practical tips, such as using Dexamethasone rinses for oral GVHD and encouraging light activity to combat fatigue. She underscores the importance of early symptom reporting, especially for chronic GVHD, as prompt intervention can significantly improve outcomes.Lisa concludes with a heartfelt story of a young patient who faced severe complications, including acute respiratory failure and paralysis, but ultimately made a remarkable recovery, even regaining mobility and starting a family. Stories like his, Lisa says, are what keep healthcare providers inspired despite the challenges. We wrap up with a reminder about the resources available to patients and caregivers, encouraging early reporting of symptoms and proactive management. Lisa's wisdom and dedication shine through, offering hope and practical guidance for those navigating the complex world of post-transplant care.More:GVHD Alliance: https://www.gvhdalliance.orgLink to LLS free Nutrition Consultations: https://www.lls.org/managing-your-cancer/food-and-nutritionThank you to our sponsors. In this episode, Robert and Lisa share fond memories and hilarious stories of the annual making of the Boiled Christmas Pudding hosted by Robert's mother and his Aunt Carol. If the holidays are a time for catching up with old friends, laughter, and taking a respite from the drudgery of every day life, this is the ultimate holiday episode. Between high school and college, I spent a gap year in Japan. There I met Robert, truly one of the funniest and fun-loving people I know. After that year, we stayed in touch as he met and married Lisa. They raise their family in Japan. Our families only see each other every 4 or 5 years. However, as you will hear, those times are as joyful and familiar as if we saw one another every day. Highlights A lot of laughter What is a Christmas Pudding anyway?? Memories of stirring the pudding for good luck Interpreting multiple versions of the same recipe More laughter 4 generations born in 4 different nations A non-food Christmas tradition from Robert's family that deeply affected me Listen Now to Robert & Lisa Related Episodes Related Recipes

May the 2024 New Year infuse wonder, community, and rejuvenation. I reunited with my friend, Lisa Stewart, at the PCORI Annual Meeting a few months ago. Lisa suggested that she interview me for the new year. When I met Lisa, she was Senior Engagement Officer and Health Equity Advisor at PCORI (the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute). Currently, Lisa is the Principal at Torchlight Engagement Advisors & Leadership Coaching. Her joy lives in connecting ideas, people, and groups for organizations serious about improving the health outcomes of over-burdened communities through health equity strategy implementation and integration, cross-sector partnerships, impact investing, and capacity-building. We ponder privilege, listening, bitching, travel, family, and music. Hang on. Podcast intro Welcome to Health Hats, the Podcast. I'm Danny van Leeuwen, a two-legged cisgender old white man of privilege who knows a little bit about a lot of healthcare and a lot about very little. We will listen and learn about what it takes to adjust to life's realities in the awesome circus of healthcare. Let's make some sense of all of this. Why reflect? Accept and look forward. Health Hats: Hi, Lisa Stewart. Lovely to see you, Lisa Stewart: Wow. It's lovely to be seen and be here with you. We had this wild and crazy idea that it was time for Danny to be interviewed, right? We're going to turn the tables on Danny. DALL·E 2023-12-16 - a color photo of a person looking in a mirror and seeing a black and white younger version of herself What better time of year as we march into 2024 and start thinking about the life we want to lead and what we want to do differently? I'm thrilled to be in conversation with you anytime, Danny. Anything you want to say? Health Hats: I have mixed feelings about reflection. On my podcast, I start with a proem, a preface. Why do I have the conversation? Why this guest, why this topic, whatever. A reflection at the end, done after production - the interview, the producing, the editing - were there pearls here? Is there one more story to tell? But the reflection is essential even though I'm not really a backward-looking guy. Lisa Stewart: Tell me more. Bitch in bursts, not dribbles Health Hats: Life has ups and downs. It is just the way it is. You can't have an up without a down where everything is flat - no ups and downs. Sounds boring to me. I have a chronic illness, and I'm pathologically optimistic, right? That's my style. Other pathologically optimistic people have taught me that you need to take two minutes periodically and just vent. And do the life sucks. Woe is me stuff. But mostly, I don't want to look back and think woe is me. So that's what I mean by not looking back. Accept what is and what are we going to do now. Lisa Stewart: Very practical. Do you have a ritual around your two-minute releases? DALL·E 2023-12-16 - biracial couple laughing, one in a wheelchair looking at their watch Health Hats: It's a good question.

It is also our first roundtable discussion format for the show. We sat down with 5 Italian wine producers that were visiting Atlanta as part of a tour with The Sorting Table, an importer who distributes their producers' wines to wholesalers throughout the United States. The following participants will briefly introduce themselves at the beginning of the episode: Collazzi - Arianna Folli - Sales Export Manager Tiberio - Cristiana Tiberio – Winemaker/Proprietor Sassetti Pertimali - Christina Rossi - Sales Manager Le Monde – Massimo Furlan – Export Director Agricola Gian Piero Marrone – Marco Bertone – Sales Manager We popped a bottle of Champagne and talked about their work in their respective regions but also discussed what they enjoy about visiting the United States, what common goals they share right now, and how they are each navigating the balance of honoring tradition while also keeping a watchful eye on the future with a modern perspective. Can you hear "The Call" to a Great Adventure in your life? Something you know you were meant to do? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a setting where it was just you and Nature for an extended period of time? Imagine yourself as a woman, alone on a horse, 500 miles from home… At age 54, Lisa Stewart did just that. She set out to regain the fearless girl she once had been, riding her horse, Chief, 500 miles home. Hot, homeless, and horseback, she snapped back into every original cell. On an extraordinary homegoing from Kansas City to Bates and Vernon Counties in Missouri, Lisa exhausted herself, faced her past, trusted strangers, and stayed in the middle of her frightened horse to document modern rural America, the people, animals, and land. The result was a compelling and uplifting memoir, The Big Quiet—One Woman's Horseback Ride Home. Today we visit with Lisa Stewart, author, adventurer, horsewoman, as she shares some of the details of her journey, and experiences of connecting with the Creator through Nature. You are in for a special adventure today! Come on in…
Lisa Stewart is a successful Hollywood animation producer who grew up loving everything about the movies. She couldn't get enough of them, and watched every old and new movie she could. This passion ultimately led her to Hollywood shortly after graduating from Stanford University, without any real plan, except her determination to work in the entertainment business. In fact, her only real contact there tried to discourage her from even coming to Hollywood at all. Fortunately, she didn't listen to him, and with her unwavering perseverance and smarts, mixed with some serendipitous moments, she found herself working on the first season of The Simpsons. That led to other gigs on iconic movies like Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. Then the animation execs came calling. She hesitated, but decided to take on the animation project with a little extra encouragement from Chris Rock who told her, “Lisa,do the cartoon!” Well, one project led to another, and she's been producing big animation movies ever since. Most notably, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Vivo. Join us as we listen to Lisa take us on her creative journey as Hollywood producer. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When we say health literacy what do we really mean? Our choice of language and the titles we attribute to people is multilayered. Lisa Stewart dissects ways we can approach communication with a spirit of respect and compassion which allows us to understand each other better and mitigate bias. This helps us realize that literacy is a responsibility of all parties involved. We can discover more specific terms that adequately explain what we mean such as structural or social determinants of health literacy. Listen as Lisa illustrates the type of health care environment that she envisions that would encourage patients to feel supported when asking questions, provide hands on opportunities to learn about how the body works and allows providers the resources and time to connect with patients.

Welcome, listeners, to a very special episode that is coming from a vulnerable and treasured place in my heart! There's nothing typical about this episode - First, I'm releasing this episode as both audio and video. Second, this is a solo episode, and while I have a couple more solo episodes planned for 2022, there won't be too many. The heart of this podcast is - and will remain - my guests and *their* stories. Third, this episode is not about food! In fact, there's one little mention of food in here - see if you can find it. However, I do believe this episode is in keeping with the idea of the podcast because it is *all* about story - my favorite story in the world. I've read and recited this story dozens and dozens of times, and each time, I am surprised by it. Each time, I'm filled with wonder, joy, and awe. And today I wanted to share my favorite story with you. Have you listened to the Annual Christmas Pudding episode? If you haven't, I hope you will - it's actually the perfect episode, in my opinion - funny, nostalgic, just a tiny bit poignant, and a celebration of both family and friends. The guests are my old & dear friends Robert & Lisa Stewart. Well, right at the end of the episode, I mention to Robert that he actually gave me my most treasured Christmas tradition, when he mentioned something his mother did during his childhood. The funny thing is, when Robert and I talked, he didn't remember sharing this tradition with me - or even that his mom had done that. But for me, that little conversation 25 years ago gave me a tradition that is deeply, deeply meaningful and personal. I'll let you tune into the episode to hear the rest - it's a short one. Xoxo. As a matter of fact, right on the home page of our website is this quote from Dagobert Runes: People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home. My guest today, Lisa Stewart is going to tell us about her experience meeting people and exploring Kansas at 4 mph on horseback. It is a good reminder that we all have one fundamental thing in common - we are all Kansans. Whether by birth, by choice, or by circumstance, we are all neighbors.

The Show Proem In 1960 I discovered that I didn't belong. I was eight. My parents supported Kennedy for President. Everyone else's parents supported Nixon. My eyes opened. My family was different. My parents were active in the Fair Housing Movement. They hosted businesspeople of color from Africa. No one else knew anyone of color who wasn't a maid or landscaper. Boys carried sweaty, folded-up pictures of scantily dressed girls they got from their older brothers and giggled about them in the restroom.

Lee Roy Parnell grew up in Texas, surrounded by Country Music royalty. His father was great friends with the legendary Texas Swing fiddle player and bandleader, Bob Wills. Parnell is also cousins with Americana singer/songwriter, Robert Earl Keen. As a teenager, Parnell began his music career as a drummer before picking up the guitar. The young musician spent a decade playing in the bars, dance halls, and honkytonks of Texas before making the move to Music City in 1987 as a songwriter. He quickly parlayed his singing ability with his tremendous slide guitar skills, which created his own identifiable sound and stretched the boundaries of Country Music. Parnell continues to tour and tear the roof off of theatres and electrify festivals. He is passionate about his songwriting and most recently his Blackberry Smoke cut, "Good One Comin' On," which as featured on the hit TV series, "Yellowstone." Mississippi native Lisa Stewart sings with Parnell, yet her incredible talent stretches into recording voiceovers and acting. Like Parnell, Stewart began performing at an early age by singing in church, eventually moving to Nashville in 1987 to attend Belmont University on the Roy Acuff scholarship. Stewart earned her stripes in the music industry by playing clubs in Nashville while a full-time student. After a demo session with Byron Gallimore, she landed a contract with BNA Records. Besides promoting her singing career, Stewart hosted several nationally syndicated and cable entertainment news shows while balancing her touring career. She has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Lenny Kravitz to Kenny Rogers. And she has shared the silver screen with Oscar winners Gwynneth Paltrow and Melissa Leo. The young singer put her career on hold for several years when she married former Little Texas band member, Brady Seals, in 2002. After divorcing in 2018, Stewart has been touring with Parnell. I interviewed Parnell and Stewart via phone in May of this year after they were forced to cancel performances due to the coronavirus pandemic. I first saw this duo in April of 2019 when they performed at City Winery in Nashville at a benefit concert for fellow singer/songwriter, John Berry. Parnell and Stewart, who are raising young children from previous marriages, discuss their individual musical backgrounds and how their combined love of singing and performing has brought their careers together.
