Archived at the Wade Center are a set of letters between Warren Lewis and a missionary named Blanche Biggs. After the death of his brother, C.S. Lewis, Warren received a letter out of the blue from Blanche, who was serving as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. In this week's episode, Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing sit down with Diana Glyer to discuss her new book The Major and the Missionary, which collects and examines this set of letters that reveal not only a new side of Warren but the deep and intimate friendship he fostered with Blanche. C.S. Lewis's brother, Warren Lewis is much less known of the two, but his life is still very interesting. Diana Glyer came across letters by him and ones written to him that provide an interesting story on its own. The Major and the Missionary gives the reader greater insight into Warrren's life, while also adding to understanding his more famous brother. J.R.R. Tolkien is commonly perceived as a reactionary who totally rejected the modern world, and whose literary influences began and ended with the Middle Ages. Holly Ordway's new book, Tolkien's Modern Reading: Middle-earth Beyond the Middle Ages, debunks that view of Tolkien's life and work. Ordway begins with an invaluable critique of the sources of this misconception, especially the official biography written by Humphrey Carpenter, who admitted his own bias and desire to portray Tolkien as an uptight fuddy-duddy. She then proceeds to examine the works of modern literature we know Tolkien read, gleaning insights about how he may have been influenced either by acceptance or rejection of what he found in those works. When Matt and I were at the C.S. Lewis Symposium in North Carolina, we heard Dr. Diana Glyer give a talk on the Inklings which rightly received a standing ovation. In this episode, Matt and Dr. Glyer discuss the material covered in that talk and its associated book, Bandersnatch.

Did the Inklings influence each other? According to C.S. Lewis, "No one ever influenced Tolkien—you might as well try to influence a bandersnatch." With her two books The Company They Keep (2008) and Bandersnatch (2015), Dr. Diana Pavlac Glyer has turned Lewis's denial on its head. In this week's episode, Drs. Crystal and David C. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were members of a group called the Inklings--writers who met to challenge and inspire each other in their work. Yet despite widespread appreciation for their writing, and even though many work tirelessly for the Kingdom, few Christians today choose to make their most precious thoughts, work, and identities vulnerable to the criticism of others. This talk exploded myths about the Inklings, showed where you can see Lewis in Middle Earth and Tolkien in Narnia, and most importantly, revealed how Christians today can learn to cut through shallow praise and truly sharpen each other as iron on iron. For the last ten years the C.S. Lewis Foundation has hosted a retreat at Camp Allen in Texas. This year's event is November 9th - 11th. William O'Flaherty spoke with Andrew Lazo about it.
