The $127 million federal investment signifies a targeted effort by the Government of Canada to strengthen the Canadian biomanufacturing and life sciences ecosystem. Specifically, the funding is allocated to two entities for distinct but related purposes:Aspect Biosystems The investment will support the development and commercialization of Aspect's bioprinting technology, which is used to create therapeutic tissues. This initiative aims to advance Canadian-made biomanufacturing platforms, moving the research from the lab to commercial production.Providence Health Care (PHC) The funding will support PHC in establishing a new Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) facility. This facility will be used to manufacture clinical-grade cell and gene therapies, supporting clinical trials, research, and future patient treatments.Overall, this investment is intended to secure domestic capacity in the life sciences sector, create high-quality jobs, and improve Canada's preparedness for future health challenges. Mark Carney on Infrastructure The Alto High-Speed Rail (HSR) project is the most ambitious transportation initiative in modern Canadian history. Formerly referred to as "High Frequency Rail" (HFR), the project evolved in 2025 into a full high-speed rail plan under Alto, a dedicated Crown corporation. For Canada, this represents a shift from outdated, shared-track travel to a modern, electrified "backbone" connecting the country's most populous region. 1. What is Alto? Alto is a wholly owned subsidiary of VIA Rail, created to act as the project authority. It operates at arm's length from the government to manage the design, construction, and eventual operation of the rail network. The Partnership: Alto is working with Cadence, a private consortium that includes major players like CDPQ Infra, AtkinsRéalis, and Air Canada, to co-design the system.The Goal: A dedicated 1,000 km track where passenger trains no longer have to pull over for freight trains.2. Technical Scope & Route The project targets speeds of up to 300 km/h, effectively "shrinking" the distance between major hubs. Primary Corridor: Toronto – Peterborough – Ottawa – Montréal – Trois-Rivières – Québec City.Phase 1: In late 2025, the government announced that the Ottawa–Montréal segment would be the first to start construction (expected in 2029) to prove the technology and generate immediate regional benefits.Southwestern Ontario: Studies are currently underway (due late 2026) to determine how to extend this service or enhance rail connections toward London and Windsor.3. What It Means for Canada The project is being framed as a "nation-building" endeavor with three primary impacts: Economic Integration By turning the Toronto-Quebec City corridor into a single, fluid economic zone, Alto aims to boost Canada's GDP by an estimated $35 billion. It allows people to live in more affordable cities (like Peterborough or Trois-Rivières) while working in major financial hubs. Environmental Goals The network will be fully electrified, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of travel in the corridor. It is designed to lure travelers away from short-haul flights and car trips on the congested Highway 401. Operational Reliability Currently, VIA Rail shares tracks with CN and CP freight trains, leading to frequent delays. Alto's dedicated tracks mean: Frequency: Trains departing every few minutes during peak hours.On-time performance: Targeted at 95% or higher.Travel Times: Dramatic reductions, such as Toronto to Ottawa in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours (down from 4.5+).4. I'm joined by Bria, who is just three months postpartum after having her HBAC — that's a homebirth after cesarean — where she birthed an almost 11-pound baby.  But her story didn't start there. With her first baby, she experienced PROM, which ultimately led to an emergency C-section. Can a carbon-negative, bio-based molecule replace legacy phosphonates and help you use less azole—without sacrificing corrosion performance? In this episode, host Trace Blackmore, CWT, welcomes Matheus Paschoalino, PhD Senior Business Development Manager and Microbial Control SME of Solugen, to unpack polyhydroxycarboxylic acids (PHCs) and how they're changing cooling-water programs from the field up. We cover HEDP replacement in light-duty systems, azole enhancement in copper-challenged waters, a second-generation cut for heavy-duty heat flux, and PHC behavior with oxidizers and non-oxidizer biocides.  From Bioforge to Basin: How PHCs Are Made and Why It Matters  Paschoalino explains Solugen's chemo-enzymatic “Bioforge” approach that oxidizes sugars (corn-syrup feedstock) into PHCs with very high yield and no practical byproducts—a pathway validated as carbon-negative. He outlines how different “cuts” (monoacid-rich vs. diacid-rich) map to different use cases, and notes current manufacturing capacity and adoption across hundreds of towers.  Replacing HEDP in Light-Duty Programs  For hospitals, HVAC, and other light-duty systems, PHCs have fully replaced HEDP as the anodic corrosion inhibitor while keeping PBTC for scale, enabling lower total phosphorus formulations with equal or better performance compared to status-quo organics.  Azole Enhancement, Free Copper, and Real-World Cost  Field work showed PHCs chelate metals quickly, protecting azole demand when free copper is present (e.g., after oxidizer flushing) and reducing expensive azole overdosing. One university case dropped an adjunct 8-ppm azole feed by pairing the base 3–4 ppm azole with PHC, yielding both corrosion control and lower discharge costs.  Second-Generation PHCs for Heavy-Duty Heat Flux (Toward “Neutral Phosphorus”)  At higher heat flux and stabilized-phosphate conditions, a diacid-rich second-generation PHC proved more stable, enabling orthophosphate reduction and opening a path toward “neutral phosphorus” programs that leverage background phosphate in municipal make-up. Bench data also show synergy with trace metals (e.g., zinc).  Biocide Potentiation and Where It Works Best PHCs remain stable with oxidizers like chlorine dioxide and bleach. Their most compelling synergy shows up with non-oxidizers and peracetic acid (PAA): as a biocide potentiator, PHCs can reduce the need to overdose actives such as THPS, glutaraldehyde, quats, and DBNPA by first complexing interfering metals (e.g., Fe/FeS), letting the biocide perform as intended.  Not “Bug Food”: Pilot Cooling Towers and Oxidizer Demand  To address the industry's biggest concern with bio-based chemistries, Solugen ran side-by-side outdoor pilot cooling towers under identical bleach control. Result: comparable oxidizer usage and consistently low counts versus HEDP—evidence that PHCs don't fuel biofilm.  Chelation Mechanics, Polymer Savings, and White Rust  PHCs chelate beyond acid-group stoichiometry thanks to multiple hydroxyls and conformational effects—critical for controlling dissolved metals and protecting films. In stressed heat-flux/chlorine conditions, PHCs reduced calcium-phosphate fouling versus HEDP, often allowing polymer dosage cuts. Early data also show promise for white-rust mitigation on galvanized systems, with the diacid-rich cut delivering the strongest reductions.  For practitioners, the message is pragmatic: PHCs aren't “lab curiosities.” They're fielded at scale, enabling lower-phosphorus programs, protecting costly azole inventories, widening the operational window under oxidizer stress, and potentiating select biocides—while staying compatible with common metals. Judy began her journey in pelvic health after spending most of her career as an orthopedic physical therapist, most recently as co-owner of a large outpatient orthopedic practice in Cherokee County, Georgia before selling it in 2019. It was her own physical challenges that were solved through pelvic health physical therapy that motivated her to specialize in pelvic health herself.
