Documate, the company Dorna Moini started as a unique SaaS business for the legal profession, has transformed into Gavel. The new branding of this platform is designed to help streamline legal processes and services by creating customizable legal solutions going beyond just documents, to bring significant value to clients on a larger scale. They strongly believe that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that can empower the legal field. This innovation holds the potential to generate two important outcomes: (1) it will lead to the creation of more jobs for lawyers, albeit with some changes in their roles, and (2) it will increase access to legal services for a broader audience that would normally not be able to afford legal help. Their recent beta launch using AI introduces a feature that takes the high-quality work produced by their customers and transforms it into attorney-controlled workflows for the delivery of legal services. What sets them apart is their commitment to ensuring that AI and its outcomes are under the full control of the attorney, prioritizing data privacy as a top concern. This ensures that the results are completely transparent and visible to the legal experts who use their platform. Dorna and her husband balance raising two young children as well as their professional lives. Her team that was 4-5 members a couple years ago has grown to over twenty, including a CTO. Dorna quotes, “ Just like parenting teaches you the importance of prioritization, we believe that managing employees and running a company share many transferable skills with managing a family and fostering the growth of your children.” See the full updated article here: https://goalsforyourlife.com/saas-business/

Dorna Moini is the CEO and founder of Gavel (formerly Documate), an easy-to-use platform for building client-facing legal apps. Prior to starting the company, Dorna was a litigator at Sidley Austin. There, in her pro bono practice, she worked with legal aid organizations to build a web application for domestic violence survivors to complete and file their paperwork, which led to the idea for Documate - to enable other attorneys to do the same in any area of law. Dorna is on the Legal Services Corporation Emerging Leaders Council and a member of LAFLA's Advisory Board. She was named an ABA Legal Rebel and is on the Fastcase 50 list.  In this conversation, we discussed: Dorna's initial interest in the law was human rights issues She ended up in BigLaw and actually enjoyed it! Dorna did a lot of pro bono work with domestic violence victims, which prompted her to develop a platform to make legal services more accessible to them; and that evolved to Documate Getting to the point where she couldn't run the business and work at the law full-time Her firm offered for her to go part-time, but she decided she wanted to focus completely on her business Dorna felt comfortable taking a leap knowing she could always go back to practice She experienced a huge learning curve, but found it easy to self-educate with all the resources available  Getting comfortable with what other people think of you making the jump from law to entrepreneurship  The fear of regret was larger than the fear of failure The importance of building a team that deeply believes in the core mission You don't need to go to business school to start a successful business Working hard feels different when your heart is fully in it Connect with Megan! Building Turbo Tax for Law – Leveraging Legal Document Automation (Dorna Moini CEO Gavel)

Since she was a kid, Dorna Moini, the CEO of legal document automation company Gavel, knew she wanted to be a lawyer–specifically a human rights lawyer. So, right after she received an accounting degree from NYU she headed to law school and even took an internship with the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. After talking to a trusted professor, she decided that before pursuing human rights law, it might be best to get other types of legal experience and she ended up working in big law for several years. Even though corporate clients and large employers were her clients, Dorna never lost her desire to use her law degree for the greater good and took on a bunch of pro bono work–especially in the area of domestic relations. While doing that work she figured out pretty quickly that a lot of it was repetitive, form based tasks that took time away from other work that actually required her legal skills. She asked a friend to build her an app that would automate the form creation process. Basically she wanted TurboTax for domestic law. They called the app Self Help Law and it was a success. So much so that people within and without her firm started using it. In fact, it was so successful that people from other countries started asking her to design apps to fill out forms for the legal work they were doing. It was at that point that she figured maybe she should start a company and take her app to the masses. In 2018 she quit her law firm job and became a full fledged legal tech entrepreneur. She changed the name of her company to Documate and the company began building a platform that would enable the automation of all kinds of forms. Ultimately, the company turned into what is now known as Gavel and it helps its users automate the creation of all kinds of legal forms. It also automates documents related to running a law firm or legal department like intake forms and billing documents.

Last week, Documate, the no-code document automation platform, rebranded as Gavel, a move designed to better reflect the company's mission to become the platform of choice for legal professionals and legal organizations wanting to “productize” the delivery of legal services by packaging services as online legal products. Gavel founder and CEO Dorna Moini joins LawNext this week to discuss how her company has evolved from document automation to come to support law firms, courts, legal aid organizations, and even legal tech companies such as Hello Divorce, as they build tools to automate legal services. She also discusses how a law firm can get started on productizing its own services, why a firm would want to to this, and whether some practices are better suited for productization than others. Moini was an associate at the law firm Sidley Austin in San Francisco when she left in 2017 to found what was originally called HelpSelf Legal and focused on automating legal help to domestic violence victims. Interest from others within the legal industry in her automation platform led her to pivot the next year as Documate and focus on building automation. Over the years, as more and more of her customers built out full legal products using Documate, she decided to rebrand again as Gavel, a name that Moini believes invokes a trusted process.   Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. When Ropes & Gray launched their R&G Insights Lab consulting arm, one of their goals was to create a dynamic legal team with specialized expertise in analytics, behavioral science, and strategic consulting. Dr. Caitlin Handron completes the behavior science part of that mission, and she talks with us about how that expertise helps guide clients on issues of risk and compliance, DEI goals, and cultural assessments. Dr. Handron's experience at Stanford University's SPARQ "Do Tank" prepared her for applying behavioral science to the real world of the corporate environment and put those scientific techniques into practice. While it may seem strange for a law firm to apply these types of scientific principles to the advising of clients, Dr. Handron mentions that the legal environment is really not much different from the rest of the world... as much as we lawyers would like to think we are. Information Inspirations In a recent Bloomberg Law article, former TGIR guest, Olga Mack discusses no-code and low-code processes will be the key to automating tasks, and that a recent Gartner report pointed out that these processes will help reduce legal tasks in in-house legal departments by 50% in just a few years. A SaaS Business is subscription as a service. SaaS is how many online companies are now formatting their business products. The principle is not new. Even while growing up, I signed up to receive a special monthly surprise box with makeup samples. This was an excellent example of a subscription. I paid a monthly fee and received a product. I could cancel at any time, but it created a recurring revenue model. Now we see subscription offers for most everything we see online, from Microsoft, to licensing videos to membership sites. Dorna Moini started a unique SaaS business that is used for the legal profession. Her company at Documate.org began as she discovered a problem that needed a solution. As an attorney, she did some pro-bono work representing many domestic violence victims in trial and appellate proceedings. So she cofounded a platform that bridged the gap for the legal and tech industries to streamline the paperwork. The principles Dorna used in her business apply to most every business, especially for startups. We will cover four steps here: Solve a unique problem, expand your network, start small and think big and finally, use technology to grow. Full article: SaaS Business
