I'm chatting with Erin Levine, the founder and CEO of Hello Divorce, about why the push to get rid of no-fault divorce is seriously bad news—especially for women. No-fault divorce has enabled people to leave marriages without having to prove things like abuse or cheating and it makes women safer. The GOP wants to repeal or restrict no-fault divorce. We're here to break down why that's a huge problem. Erin, a lawyer-turned-CEO, has been shaking up the divorce world with Hello Divorce, a platform that makes the whole process smoother, easier, and less stressful. In this episode, we discuss what no-fault divorce is, why it matters, and what could happen if it's taken away. Spoiler alert: it's not good. Featured topics: No-fault divorce: What it is, and how it differs from fault-based divorce (4:55) How no-fault laws help victims leave unsafe marriages (6:55) Why the rollback of no-fault divorce would be disastrous (32:17) What you can do to ensure no-fault divorce protections remain in place (34:16) Learn more about Erin Levine: Erin Levine is not your typical attorney. With over a decade of experience in litigating complex family matters, she saw the need for a kinder, easier and more affordable pathway out of marriage and into the next chapter of life. To achieve this, Erin set out to revolutionize the broken divorce system and founded Hello Divorce, a venture capital backed, tech-enabled platform, that combines self-service online tools with integrated expert advice, making it easier for everyone to navigate their lives and finances with less stress and mess. Erin's innovative approach to the divorce process has earned her media mentions from the legal industry and beyond, with recent features in Vice, Forbes, American Bar Association Journal, Business Insider and TechCrunch. Ultimately, Erin is on a mission to help separating couples empower a better life ahead and has helped thousands of Americans reorganize their lives and families through a framework that levels the playing field between spouses so they can sort things out fairly, avoid missteps and reimagine their next (best) chapter. Beverly Price reveals the invisible scars that complicate healing during and after divorce for abuse victims in this powerful Domestic Violence Awareness Month episode of Divorce & Beyond. Susan Guthrie sits down with Beverly Price, a divorce coach and advocate for domestic violence survivors, to uncover the harsh realities of how divorce can re-traumatize victims. Together, they explore how untrained divorce professionals and legal abuse can exacerbate the trauma of domestic violence. Plus, Beverly shares critical advice on creating a safety exit plan, building support systems, and why trauma-informed care is essential. Featured topics: The various ways divorce can re-introduce trauma for those already traumatized in their relationship Unintentional re-traumatization by professionals not versed in domestic violence and how to encourage victims to seek trauma-informed experts Understanding legal abuse and how abusers can continue to manipulate and control throughout the legal process The importance of trauma counseling to help victims process and heal from their experiences How to find a trauma-informed divorce coach and the impact of having the right support Navigating personal turmoil, regret, and shame while going through divorce after being victimized The necessity of creating a safe exit plan—especially because 70% of women are murdered when leaving an abusive relationship Golden nuggets: “There's a process that can happen that takes a person from being traumatized to then going through divorce and being re-traumatized. It's the action of, in some cases, facing the abuser, whether it's in mediation or whether it's in litigation. That in itself can be terrible.” “You didn't cause it. I've been working with a woman for almost a year to watch her get stronger and not blame herself. But it takes work because if you think about it, all the years that you were subject to it [the abuse], you're not going to flip a switch and all of a sudden feel confident and feel like it's not your fault. But it is the abuser's fault. He's not doing it to you. He's doing it for himself.” **************************************** About this week's special guest: Beverly Price Beverly Price, of Her Empowered Divorce, has helped thousands of women with her 30+ years' divorce coaching experience by providing knowledge, support, and insight to empower those going through the divorce process before, during and after. Amy Polacko, Divorce and Empowerment Coach and Investigative Journalist returns to The Divorce & Beyond podcast with Susan Guthrie. Amy is here to help bust the top five myths of domestic abuse. The myths being busted are prominent and often repeated time and again. We must raise awareness so we don't perpetuate these myths and continue to cause incredible harm. Amy Polacko is committed to helping women live on their terms during/after a toxic relationship or divorce. As a divorced single mom, she is passionate about coaching women one-on-one and founded the empowerment group Strong Savvy Women to support, inspire, and guide single women. She is also an award-winning journalist highlighting women's issues, including divorce, domestic abuse, coercive control, and singlehood. Myth Busting and Golden Nuggets includ Myth #1: “The Hysterical Woman.” Labeling women as "hysterical" diminishes their experiences and allows the cycle of abuse to continue. Myth #2: “Why didn't she just leave?” One reason: You need to have a safe exit plan, which takes time and planning. Myth #3: If there isn't physical violence, it's not really abuse. The more we tell stories of domestic abuse, the more aware we can become. Myth #4: “It only happens in poor families.” Domestic abuse doesn't discriminate and affects people across all socioeconomic backgrounds. Myth #5: “What happens in someone's home is a private matter.” Domestic abuse isn't a private issue; it has societal repercussions. What you can do to help break the cycle of abuse and raise awareness. **************************************** About this week's special guest: Amy Polacko Amy Polacko is a Freedom Warrior - and is committed to helping women live life on their own terms during/after a toxic relationship or divorce. In the show, Angus MacGyver, portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson, was a resourceful and clever secret agent known for his ability to solve complex problems and escape dangerous situations using unconventional and makeshift solutions. He would often utilize everyday objects and his scientific knowledge to create devices or tools on the spot, allowing him to overcome obstacles in creative ways. It's a term that highlights ingenuity and resourcefulness in finding practical solutions to challenges.

Last week, Documate, the no-code document automation platform, rebranded as Gavel, a move designed to better reflect the company's mission to become the platform of choice for legal professionals and legal organizations wanting to “productize” the delivery of legal services by packaging services as online legal products. Gavel founder and CEO Dorna Moini joins LawNext this week to discuss how her company has evolved from document automation to come to support law firms, courts, legal aid organizations, and even legal tech companies such as Hello Divorce, as they build tools to automate legal services. She also discusses how a law firm can get started on productizing its own services, why a firm would want to to this, and whether some practices are better suited for productization than others. Moini was an associate at the law firm Sidley Austin in San Francisco when she left in 2017 to found what was originally called HelpSelf Legal and focused on automating legal help to domestic violence victims. Interest from others within the legal industry in her automation platform led her to pivot the next year as Documate and focus on building automation. Over the years, as more and more of her customers built out full legal products using Documate, she decided to rebrand again as Gavel, a name that Moini believes invokes a trusted process. Moms Moving On: Navigating Divorce, Single Motherhood & Co-Parenting.
"How will I survive co-parenting? "One of the most common questions when transitioning into your life post-divorce. This week Elisha Alcantara from Hello Divorce joins Michelle Dempsey-Multack to discuss managing your expectations as you navigate divorce and co-parenting. Michelle and Elisha will educate listeners on: Talking about divorce in a destigmatized light Making decisions based upon the needs of your children vs your ex-partner Understanding that your co-parent will rise higher than before to take care of your children Managing your emotions and working through triggers as they arise AND MUCH MORE Elisha is an entrepreneur who has started real estate companies, a construction firm, a non-profit focused on housing homeless families, and most recently has been writing about life during and after divorce with Hello Divorce. After 15 years with her spouse, she went through a divorce that she thought would gut her and ruin life as she knew it. But that wasn't at all what happened. While she did lose everything that was in her former life...it turned out it was for the betterment of her future life. Through her failures in business and life, she has learned how to live from the inside out instead of from the outside in. She understands the life-altering difference this makes and is passionate to share this with others in the hopes they will live a calmer, more fulfilled life. She lives in Portland, OR with her two bright and beautiful kiddos Grace and Bradley, and she's the kind of mom who'll hold a tarantula just to make her kids happy. Whatever you're secretly feeling or going through, you can live a happier, more connected, more confident life by looking inside and living from there. She's a "come as you are" kind of gal and believes anyone can start living the life they imagine once they take responsibility for their choices, actions, and responses.
