As the Supreme Court returns to the bench, we're raising a glass to a favorite from our archives. In this episode, Nancy Maveety shares stories from Glass and Gavel, where cocktails meet constitutional law. ----- From the earliest days of the U.S. Supreme Court, alcohol has been part of the work lives and social lives of the justices. In the book “Glass and Gavel: The U.S. Supreme Court and Alcohol,” Nancy Maveety takes readers on a tour through the ways that SCOTUS and spirits have overlapped. In this episode of the Modern Law Library, she speaks with the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles about how she came to write this in-depth history. While the Prohibition Era would immediately spring to mind, the court faced a number of cases involving alcohol that impacted commerce, advertising, criminal justice and even gender discrimination laws. Maveety, who in addition to being a scholar of constitutional law also studies mixology, shares how she selected a signature cocktail for each chief justice's tenure. She also has a drink suggestion for readers which incorporates an ingredient that's known to be one of Justice Ginsburg's favorites–and a cautionary tale about a normally teetotaling chief justice who dropped dead after sipping a sherry.

Stick with us as we bunk off to record anecdotes, interview others in the industry and basically gabble on. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave us a rating. On April 4, 2025, I presented live on the topic of the shifting paradigm of billable hour and serving new legal market opportunities. I presented alongside Clio's Lawyer in Resident, Joshua Lenon. Here are the top 5 takeaways:* AI Will Automate a Large Portion of Legal WorkUp to 75% of all hourly billable work in law firms is projected to be automatable by AI in the coming years. This shift is already underway, with rapid adoption of AI tools across firms of all sizes, especially in mid-sized and larger firms.* The Billable Hour Model Is Becoming ObsoleteAs AI drastically reduces the time required for many legal tasks, the traditional billable hour model is increasingly unsustainable. Flat fees, subscriptions, and value-based billing are emerging as more client-friendly and profitable alternatives, especially as clients become more aware of AI's capabilities.* The Latent Legal Market Is a Massive OpportunityThere is a huge unmet demand for legal services—estimated at over $1.3 trillion in the US alone. By leveraging AI and moving away from billable hours, lawyers can serve more clients, offer greater pricing certainty, and tap into this latent market.* Industry-Specific AI Tools and Data Security Are EssentialGeneric AI tools are not reliable sources of truth for legal work. Lawyers should prioritize industry-specific AI solutions that use retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and ensure privacy, security, and compliance (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA). Using the right tools helps avoid ethical pitfalls and increases accuracy.* Client Expectations and Legal Practice Are EvolvingMost clients either prefer or are indifferent to their lawyers using AI, and younger generations are especially open to it. Lawyers must focus on delivering value, efficiency, and transparency. Adopting AI and new billing models not only meets client expectations but also positions firms for future success.__________________________Here's a link to the slide deck that goes with the presentation.Want to maximize your law firm? Here are the top 5 takeaways from this episode with Ray Allen of ContractsCounsel:* ContractsCounsel is Transforming Legal Services with a Marketplace Model:ContractsCounsel connects consumers, small businesses, and startups with lawyers through a competitive, flat-fee proposal system. The platform emphasizes transparency, defined scope of work, and easy communication, making legal services more accessible and predictable for clients.* Flat Fees and Productized Legal Services Reduce Disputes and Increase Satisfaction:The platform encourages lawyers to offer fixed-fee services, which helps clients understand costs upfront and reduces billing disputes. Data from ContractsCounsel shows that disputes are rare, especially with flat-fee arrangements, and user satisfaction is high (average rating 4.9/5).* Subscription and Instant Bid Features Enable Lawyers to Modernize Their Practice:ContractsCounsel offers tools like instant bids (pre-set proposals for common services) and subscription-based offerings (e.g., monthly legal chat access). These features help lawyers productize their services, save time, and create recurring revenue streams, while also providing clients with affordable, ongoing legal support.* The Legal Market Opportunity is Vast and Largely Untapped:A significant portion of legal needs in the U.S. go unmet due to traditional billing models and lack of transparency. By shifting to fixed fees and subscription models, lawyers can tap into a much larger market—potentially worth over a trillion dollars—by serving clients who previously avoided legal help due to cost uncertainty.* Legal Tech, AI, and Passive Income are Shaping the Future of Law:The role of AI tools, legal chatbots, and digital product marketplaces (like selling legal templates) in the legal industry is growing. Lawyers who embrace technology, automation, and new business models (such as selling templates or offering AI-powered information bots) will be better positioned to serve clients and generate passive income.__________________________Learn more about ContractsCounsel.Want to maximize your law firm? Raymond E. Foster is a retired law enforcement executive, university professor, and U.S. Coast Guard veteran whose distinguished career is matched only by his profound commitment to Masonic principles. As a past Master of a Lodge, an Officer's Coach, and a recipient of prestigious honors—including the Grand Master's Mason of the Year Award (2020), the Hiram Award (2023), and the DeMolay Legion of Honor (2024)—Raymond brings a wealth of insight into how ancient Masonic tools and timeless stories foster personal growth, leadership, and transformation. In his book, The Temple Within, Raymond explores practical frameworks for navigating modern life through enduring Masonic symbols and narratives. He reveals how tools like the Square, Compass, and Gavel serve as guides for fairness, discipline, and self-improvement, offering listeners actionable wisdom for daily challenges. He delves into the significance of the 24-inch ruler, a simple yet profound symbol of balance, teaching us how to harmonize work, rest, and service in a fast-paced world. Drawing from stories as diverse as the trials of Job and the wit of Mark Twain, Raymond illustrates how these narratives inspire resilience and foster unity. Above all, he emphasizes that the greatest construction project is not one of stone, but of character building an “inner temple” that stands firm against life's trials.Raymond's unique perspective, shaped by decades of leadership and service, makes him an engaging and authoritative voice for audiences seeking deeper meaning and practical tools for personal development. Top 5 Takeaways from my interview with Mike Payne of Boss Advisors:1. Embracing Alternative Business Structures (ABS):Mike Payne was an early adopter of Arizona's Alternative Business Structure for law firms, allowing him to merge his law and accounting practices. This move reduced administrative burdens, enabled non-lawyer ownership, and positioned his firm as a pioneer, paving the way for larger firms to follow.2. Subscription and Flat Fee Model Over Hourly Billing:Mike's firm operates almost entirely on flat fees or subscriptions, avoiding hourly billing. He started by spreading tax prep fees over 12 months and added value through consulting, eventually formalizing subscription offerings across five practice areas, including legal services.3. Client-Centric, Tiered Service Packages:Instead of letting clients choose from generic service tiers, Mike's firm categorizes clients based on their business profile (e.g., investor, startup, owner-operator, enterprise) and recommends the appropriate package. This approach streamlines pricing, reduces custom quotes, and ensures clients get what they need.4. Data-Driven, Transparent Pricing:Mike uses a detailed, analytical process to set fixed fees—calculating internal costs, adding a target profit margin, and comparing to market rates. If a service isn't profitable or competitive, he won't offer it. This transparency extends to publishing pricing and typical client profiles on his website.5. Leveraging Technology and Remote Work:Mike prioritizes cloud-based, integrated tech tools for both legal and accounting work, enabling a hybrid and remote team. He's open to AI and automation for efficiency but is cautious about client data security. Tools like WealthCounsel, Clio Grow, Carbon, and Ignition are central to his operations.__________________________Learn more about BOSS Advisors.Want to maximize your law firm? Slam the Gavel welcomes Roy from Chicago to the podcast. He has been trapped in a Cook County Chicago Divorce riddled with corruption. Prior to this happening he and his ex mutually signed a legal Separation Agreement in November of 2019. At that time, March 6, 2020, their NET WORTH was $7.5 million dollars. However his ex's law firm of Hoffenberg and Block has already obtained over $2 million in legal fees and Roy has not even seen or spoken to his once inseparable children who live across the street in FIVE YEARS. This law firm judge shopped and found Judge Renee Goldfarb and she froze ALL of Roy's assets. He has received less than 3% of his life's work, $179,800.00 in 5.5 years, $2,700.00/month. He was also forced to move eight times and arrested twice for reporting the judge. Roy was ALSO attacked leaving a restaurant and barely survived with NO THEFT at all, just a SINISTER MESSAGE FROM OUTSIDE INFLUENCES. Slam the Gavel welcomes Darla Hall to the podcast. Darla Hall came onto the podcast to share the story of her son, Nicholas Hall who was recently sentenced to 21 years in prison in Connecticut. Their nightmare began in 2020 when ALLEGATIONS surfaced just weeks after a custody dispute with his then-wife. One alleged victim later confirmed nothing ever happened, yet Nicholas Hall was still prosecuted AND from the very beginning, his case has been marked by conflicts of interest, COLLUSION, improper rulings, suppression of evidence and POWERFUL political CONNECTIONS that cast doubt on the FAIRNESS of his trial. In February 2025, Nicholas Hall was convicted on four of six counts, though not on the most serious of charges. On August 14th, he was sentenced and taken into custody despite FIVE YEARS ON BOND WITHOUT INCIDENT, no prior record, and voluntarily passing both psychosexual evaluation and a polygraph. EVIDENCE was mishandled, jury instructions FLAWED, WITNESSES COACHED and DNA methodology IMPROPERLY ADMITTED. Yet his motions for a new trial and bond pending appeal were DENIED. Darla Hall is seeking help, anyone who can offer EXPERT ASSISTANCE, legal representation for his APPEAL, or support with bond pending appeal to the Appellate Court. This message was given by Pastor DJ Ritchey on Sunday, August 3, 2025 at Memorial Heights Baptist Church.
Passage(s): Matthew 7:1-6 In your life, don't be a critic, be a servant!
From the outside, my decision at work didn't make much sense — it cost more time, more money, and even confused a few people. But it was the right call for the people involved. That's justice in the Stoic sense — not just what's legal, not just what looks efficient on paper, but what's fair. In this episode, we explore justice as one of the four Stoic cardinal virtues, why it's inseparable from wisdom, courage, and temperance, and why it often costs you something to live it. From workplace promotions to gym etiquette to keeping promises with friends, we'll uncover why real justice isn't flashy — and why it matters most when no one's watching.

Eyes, eyes— who's got eyes?! Here, I have eyes. I don't want yours. What? Why not?! Eyes, eyes, buys and trades—! The day I met Atticus catticus, I by some strange coincidence also discovered “Toonces” …and however startling it was that they looked just alike, the cat himself had other strangenesses about him that I couldn't seem to shake. The other adjustments were yet to have taken place, but the cat did seem to be armed with a certain spirit, that did indeed show me immidiately things I might have otherwise missed. Still, it was true that this weirdness might have been misinterpreted, but however shallow my aspirations remained to the theatre world, or the world at large, it seems as though there was just stil some kind of strange connection with Saturday Night Live I couldn't shake. Almost like it followed me everywhere. BIG JIMMY runs SIN CENTRE at SIN CITY, an exclusive bar and restaurant in Las Vegas. You don't know about Sin Centre at Sin City?' Slam the Gavel welcomes David Thurston to the podcast. David is a determined father and whistleblower from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and a SURVIVOR of the KIDS FOR CASH SCANDAL. Now David has fought alone in Family Court since 2015 to protect his nonverbal, autistic daughter from abuze and systemic neglect, even after reporting SA by her mother's adult aunt in 2020. Shockingly, the agency in charge, CYS refused to interview his daughter then closed the case as "unfounded." Soon after, the CYS director was arrested for endangering hundreds of children. The family returned to court only because the mother wasn't following prior custody orders David wanted stronger protections; instead, when Judge Terra Toohill took over the case in 2023, she - despite long judicial and political ties to adoption interests and agencies involved IGNORED clear perjury against David, fabricated custody factors, accused him of SA without evidence and ordered his daughter to undergo unnecessary exams. Today, David pays between $50-80.00 per hour for supervised visits but has not had custody in over 500 days and this all the result of judicial decisions steeped in conflict and what appears to be calculated retaliation. In June of 2025, the federal government validated David's claims. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that Luzerne County, PA VIOLATED DISABILITY LAWS by failing to properly interview his daughter, forcing Pennsylvania to REFORM how the system handles vulnerable children. David Thurston's story demonstrates just how serious and systematically dangerous unchecked judicial power and institutional neglect can be and this writer is very honored to share his voice and his truth today. To Reach David Thurston: Facebook David Thurston, justice will be served USA on Facebook, TikTok and InstagramSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Slam the Gavel welcomes Marineka Bowman to the podcast. Marineka was last on Season 3, Episodes 104, 131, 159, 160, 174 and 184, Season 4, Episodes 22, 48 and 61, Season 5, Episodes 149, 210, 238, 248, 256, 258, 263, 271 and 275. HELLO DOGE and Pam Bondi. Today, Marineka Bowman updated us on her case where the counselor, Swiyah Whittinington, with 3 years of experience is handling her daughter's counseling. The therapist has said that child cannot bond with mother, is afraid of her, though the counselor has never reached out to Marineka (mother). Also this counselor has cancelled many appointments in April and also picked up and went to work for another agency. Bear in mind, that the therapist has ties to Attorney Laura Brooks. The first counselor at Turning Corners who handled her daughter's counseling, had experience in Drug and Alcohol counseling, however no background in handling children with PTSD or Child Psychological Abuse. The third party parasite, Guardian Ad Litem, Patricia Weir communicates with the father. Apparently the father has many connections in this case. Collusion abound, Judge Natalie Haskins should have recused herself long ago...... This is a silent pain that people take for granted when there are no contact orders and personality disorders are running the courtroom, until it happens to you. Parents and their children are suffering and the judge doesn't care and leaves up decisions to inept therapists/counselors.To Reach Marineka Bowman; dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Slam the Gavel welcomes back Amy Palacios to the podcast. Amy was last on Season 3, Episodes 146, 165 and 179; Season 4, Episodes 134, 145 and 150; Season 5, Episodes 22, 70, 73, 83, 186 and 191. Amy came back onto update her case as Attorney H. Jay White's sadistic, repetitive behavior CONTINUES as he schedules two hearings at the same time on July 22, 2025. Apparently this has gone on six times in the last five years. Also Attorney White consistently lies, stating that he has not been served paperwork, despite several witnesses looking on in the courthouse. Actively filing a Federal Lawsuit based on the dual hearings that Amy can't be in two places at the same time, her case has merit and she will continue to defend herself. Two of her children "aged out," and she does have custody of the younger two children. After suffering 12 years of legal and Narcissist abuse in the family courts, he decided to take his analysis of what he calls the most blatant Government Sponsored Racketeering system to the Court of Public Opinion. For the last 2 years, he's been highlighting to an ever-growing audience the play by play of what he calls this Business Model of Financial Fraud. With a slew of other victims found from around the country, his newest initiative is to unite all victims nationwide into a single voice demanding change by calculating the industry data collected directly from the victims themselves, over this blockchain type Public Ledger on Facebook. This is what he calls the method of Intelligent Transparency. Hoping his Wall Street experience in data mining and financial analysis can finally bring the needed transparency of this system to affect real change, Dave is welcoming all victims. Dave Weigel wants victims to register at Family Court Fraud Warrior Project on Facebook. This is a group committed to revealing the, "worst of the worst," culprits in this system, while at the same time holding up the heroes out there speaking truth to power. To Reach Dave Weigel: Family Court Fraud Warrior Project on FacebookSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. In this episode of The Broadband Bunch, recorded live at Fiber Connect 2025 in Nashville, host Brad Hine welcomes Charlene Gavel, President and CEO of SaskTel, to the show. Fresh from her "Operator Lightning Talk" presentation titled Lighting Up Saskatchewan, Charlene shares the remarkable journey of SaskTel—from its origins as a provincial telephone department in 1908 to its current role as a cutting-edge technology leader in Canada. Charlene reflects on her personal career path, including her early days as a CFO and her connection to SaskTel through her father, a 30-year employee. She offers insight into the unique challenges of delivering high-speed fiber to a population of just over 1 million people spread across a landmass the size of Texas. Despite the lack of scale, Charlene highlights how SaskTel's mission-driven approach as a Crown Corporation fuels innovation and prioritizes community outcomes. The conversation explores SaskTel's transition from a traditional telco to a forward-thinking “techco,” emphasizing infrastructure automation, OSS/BSS innovation through SaskTel International, and the need to monetize fiber investments through value-added services. Charlene also offers advice to aspiring leaders—especially women in tech—about using their voice, following their passion, and building strong, collaborative teams.

Slam the Gavel welcomes back Kai Tristan Rivera to the podcast. Kai was last on the show Season 5, Episode 131, where he talked about his two brothers being withheld from his family. Kai is a very determined young man and devoted big brother, who first spoke out last year to shine a light on the hidden abuse and the fight to keep families together. He's returned now to give an important update on his journey, using his voice and platforms to expose Family Court corruption and defend the bonds that should never be broken. Kai‘s mission is simple but powerful: to protect his little brother's, stand for the truth and inspire others around him to stand up for what is right. Kai discussed what walking into the family court had felt like and sitting next to his abuser. He had also discussed what happened in court recently and how there was a one-sided interview with CPS. He did say that the Hearing Moderator was listening to him, however not changing anything while his little brothers are being turned against Kai and his whole family. In the past going before Judge Sibum, he questions if she ever listened to his brothers at all and didn't interview him either. Encouraging others to speak out as Kai wants others to speak out. Kai states, "This is happening to kids everywhere. The court should be protecting kids, and it's not. Share your stories, sign petitions, follow me and demand accountability. Talk about family court corruption and its players. We can't let abuse be hidden anymore."To Reach Kai Tristan Rivera: TikTok: @ezk.monkey.brothers, Instagram: @monkeybrothersezk, Facebook: Monkeys BrothersSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Slam the Gavel welcomes Marineka Bowman to the podcast. Marineka was last on Season 3, Episodes 104, 131, 159, 160, 174 and 184, Season 4, Episodes 22, 48 and 61, Season 5, Episodes 149, 210, 238, 248, 256, 258, 263 and 271. HELLO DOGE and Pam Bondi. Today we covered Marineka's updates to her case where Judge Natalie Haskins of DE is continuing to disrespect and disregard the imputed income that never existed involving the ex-husband who refuses to show his financials. Now, they have Marineka in the arrears of $23,000.00 and father NOW demands that she go to jail in order to break the parental bond Marineka has with her daughter. Bear in mind the father was not involved in their lives since birth and never contributed to help raising their child. SUDDENLY, he comes back into their lives only to turn it upside down. He asked for one day a week only for one hour to visit his daughter. Judge Natalie Haskins replied, "this is going to be an issue when you come back for custody." Essentially, father came back to court so Haskins could reverse custody and she asked him who would be helping him raise his child. He told her his father, who is in his 80's would be helping. So Judge Haskins gave him custody. Poor decision making on the part of the judge when their daughter was doing well in reading, and now cannot even spell simple words.
